Dylan Watson It really is so amazing that I also can not think of another comparison, than with films from Studio Ghibli, even if it is different. Animation, the story and the incredible music ... :)
I'd say the writing kinda sucked. The story didn't really make much sense and kept introducing random concepts and characters. But that really is beside the point, cause the directing is so fantastic you don't even notice. I don't just mean the fight scene(s) but also just how atmospheric it was. It really felt like an authentic historical Japan (not that I'd know what that feels like). Add to that the OST, and you've got a really good movie despite the lousy script.
JTBPlays DE "I'd say the writing kinda sucked. The story didn't really make much sense and kept introducing random concepts and characters." Any examples please?
Just finally watched this movie, and I can't get over it. I'll have to say it's my favourite anime movie by far. The music really got me too. It's all incredible.
+alundra3434 I know this comment is 9 months old but I feel I have to say this. People like you are a plague. It doesn't matter what show or what movie it is, the second someone says they really like whatever anime, immediately it's "sounds like you haven't watched that many". If I took the collective stupidity between you and everyone else who has said this, effectively liking any anime is a sign of "not watching many", because this comment exists for every single anime that has ever been made. In short, cut the trolling and let people like whatever they want. Liking something is not a sign of not seeing many. And in summary: Fuck you.
Sword of the Stranger takes a generic story, and inserts the best music and animation you could hope for in an anime. Great stuff. I'm not sure why, but I love the characters aswell.
This just shows how much promotion means. This anime is one of my faves but no one I talk to knows about it. It is like the Ghibli Movies. Studio had created movies for 2 decades but no one knew about them untill Chihiro and now everyone knows about Ghibli. If something is quality then it should be appreciated, but in the end money talks and it is easier to sell movies when you have a giant hollywood budget. At least this studio put all their money on creating a masterpiece while studios like Disney just create shit. It is up to fans to spread the word so everyone can learn about the hidden gems
Elle Chim Ah yea, i remember my 1st Ghibli movie: Princess Mononoke. I think i was like 8 or 10 and i watched that movie repeated; and when i say repeated i meant when it's over and i would restart the movie right after lmao. My 2nd and last Ghibli movie was Spirited Away. I knew the movies were good but they were too good where i yearned for more, like a series, thus i stopped watching anymore.
Some years ago i gave the movie as as a christmas present to my daughter, after she telling me about for years. After watching i played the ending song for about an hour.Tonight i do it again.Im always sad on the christmas days, but 2024 was the worst year in my life ever.My daughter this year bought me a series that from 1994,when i was much younger. As she showed me Anime' s,i showed her the last nights one of my favourites. But she will move soon, she told us" out of the blue Sky some weeks ago.So as Yoda once said,i think bout old friends long dissapeared and our past days together.Perfect Soundtrack, bringing back the magic of the first time we saw the movie. Thanks for reading and good night.
I love to listen, every now and again, to remind me that life is a journey, it can be shit, but push through and it is a glorious adventure, the world holds you close no matter how isolated you feel

It's clear the people that made this film, gave a fuck, and it shows. #NuffSaid
Thanks for the advice I will travel the vast world of Netflix and movie stores to retrieve this masterpiece for my personal viewing experience :). I shall return and tell of my tale in due course :D
Animtion in my opinion always was better in story telling. Animators dont need to worry about actors, scenes and other, beacause everything what they will dream, they can draw. And Sword of the Stranger is the best exemple, that even with pencil, some cgi and voice acting you can tell story that will remain in your mind for very long time.
This movie is my all time favourite out of everything, which I've seen this more than a dozen times over. But the feelings I get when the high pitched flute soars over the rest of the composition I have this overwhelming feeling like my spirit is soaring through the clouds, like how Nanashi feels when he rides a good horse 🙂❤️ Nanashi also reminds me that even through the worst pain I'll never feel more alive and to keep on fighting until I draw my last breath. "I'd rather fight with the pain, it makes me feel more alive" - Nanashi
Tis a story of redemption and it still gives me hope till this day. I remember watching it for the 1st time 8 years ago each time after that is so captivating. That 1st time though......*chef's kiss*
sometimes a story is told that rocks the foundation of what person should do when faced with a choice and this story binds together 2 people forced into redemption. I love this film and will watch it time and time again especially for the sound track (Goosebumps indeed)
I have mad love for the English Dub. I do love the japanese spoken versions but there are rare occasions a dub can also nail it. This film nailed both.
damn!!...that music hits me sooo deep......i could feel that cool breeze and pain that goes through nanashi......cannot get over this movie and soundtrack
I feel that, to be honest that horse riding scene is the 1st in a long time nanashi got to feel human and bonded him and Kotaru before it all went south.
The music from this movie is so amazing and not only this theme but the whole OST in gen some of the best I've ever heard. The movie was epic IMO but the OST is what stuck with me amazing amazing amazing !!!
I bought the movie but i still come here to listen to this. Every now and them I want the musical experience without the talking and fighting so I come here. Not all youtubers are pirates.
Naoki Satou, you done good my friend, listening to this after watching the movie gives me a nostalgic feeling from when i was younger and loved Disney movies like treasure planet, anastasia, mulan etc. A feeling of adventure and excitement and suspense on behalf of the characters. the flute/wind sections also make me think of Braveheart and Rob Roy for some reason.....
I loved that this was a realistic(well, more realistic than most) anime movie. One of my favorites no doubt due to the emotion it carried, yes it had a generic storyline but it was high quality throughout for sure. Samurai champloo is my fav samurai series, and this is my favorite samurai movie :D P.S the flute is perfectly tranquil in this ost
I have watched samurai X and other anime with sword figting, but this anime movie really making me goosebump... best fighting for me... and the music score....so sweeeet.....T_T
Such a beautiful movie with an equally beautiful soundtrack not to mention animation; they all work together to tell an inspiring story of redemption....one of my favorite movies! What do other people love about this movie? It is such a simple story yet leaves such an impact...why is that do you think...I'm curious to hear why others love this movie as much as I do
I would say what makes the movie so good is the very well balanced combination of precision, unobtrusiveness and grandiosity. Just like in the japan tradition, if i may say so. The story and animation may looks simple, but they are really detailed. If you look closely, you see how fluid is the animation and how many personal stories of (side?) characters are involved within the main plot. The story and animation, they walks around quietly and they let you find your way to them. Music on the other hand is epic and daring. It kicks open the door and rides straight to the midle of the room. The music speaks for the characters, it has a lot to say and it is not affraid to say it loud. It speaks about their dreams, it speaks about their fears, it speaks about their principles and their will to go and to fight for them. What makes this movie so good is the chemistry betveen the humble story, precise animation and grandeur music.
I bought this anime movie a few years ago in San Francisco Japan Town, and have watched it time and again many times since! It was during the Muromachi era, the age of contant war in Japan and the Ming dynasty of China, sometime between 1300-1600 roughly. It has brought many a tear into this old seadogs eyes, and wonderfully thought out plot of different emotions! Worth every watching with more to come! I do pity anyone relying on subtitles, but that is especially true with Japanese and Chinese words which is not easily translated, except into what would fit the Western thought pattern which is so different than Asian. I feel I miss much of many Eastern European and Scandanavian movies true essence because of my ignorance of the language. I know French and Spanish, but otherwise, I feel I lose much...
This song touches my heart and my soul . My heart flys away with this song and my soul stand still . In my opinion one of the best soundtracks i ever heard . Just amazing , i can not find the right words or enough words for this , you must feel it ! Thank you , Thank you colt . peace from austria
I have had this stuck in my head for days and days and could not remember the name of the piece. I’ve been listening to every film score with a flute or whistle in it to try to find it and I am finally free.
Been searching RUclips for some epic music, but after searching far and wide, there's no beating this amazing soundtrack to this amazing film T-T it's so beautiful.
I love the final battle in this movie but a part of me is always sad because Rarou was such a great character and I really liked him. I didn't really think of him as a villain because he honestly did not give a damn about the Ming emperor and the first time I saw the movie I was hoping that at the most Rarou would be defeated by Nanashi but not killed. Gawd I overthink these things so much!
I actually suspected that Nanashi and Rarou are going to kill each other - so I were not suprised to see how their struggle ended. But then Nanashi gets saved nicely with the jewel, so - apart from almost all characters getting killed - we get a happy ending. The final scene seems to be suggesting that he bled to death, but if so, then the entire story with the jewel makes no sense. Another thing: the amount of scars he had on his body gives a clue about what kind of wounds he already survived. At the end of the movie he has a wounded arm, leg and side (but the last wound is 99% not fatal because of the jewel) - compared to what other characters survived through the movie and the web of scars on his own back, this is not something a healthy young guy can't survive [in anime]. Correct me if I forgot about any additional injuries he received :) In short, I think he did survive and the final scene was just supposed to arise a bit of doubt so the ending wouldn't be so obviously easy and happy.
Man this song is so beautiful...yea im a dude lol and this movie is amazing. The last fight scene is so epic and I love when the flute comes in on this track !!! One of my fav movies.
Augh all of these emotional feelings are so annoying but I can't bring myself to stop listening. The movie is amazing, the whole story line is just the best, I would watch the movie any time over and over. But the music, it's like it just retells the whole story. I love it. ;-;
I don't usually care for anime, because it goes over the top on the fantastical qualities of it. But Sword of the Stranger is probably one of my favorite movies cause the maker didn't go too far with the fights and many of them actually looked realistic, while having the classical fantastical anime qualities. That and this soundtrack is one of my favorites!
I have to comment on how sad the ending to this movie actually is... "No Name," sacrifices everything and in the end succeeds, but ultimately ends up dying. The last scene in the movie was really just the kid talking to him so he wouldn't die alone or forgotten.
Well I mean...they left it pretty ambiguous, he didn't necessarily die. Which is the really beautiful part imo, because I know there's a good chance Nanashi died, which makes the end really sad and beautiful...but I want to believe that he lived, and him and Kotaro and Tobimaru lived happily ever after and wandered the land for the rest of their days :'(
Boris Kravchenko It was a cliffhanger ending, where the viewer decides whether or not Nanashi dies. In my Opinion, I do believe Nanashi survived. Reason? He didn't seem to have suffered any major wounds, aside from the final stab. The only other wound I'd be more worried about would be the one in the leg, which could of been an Artery. The ending at the end basically begs out the question, if Nanashi either bled out before the next village, or a Kotaro made it in time. Judging on how the Samurai were able to gather and ride out from Evening to Night it doesn't seem that necessarily of a long ride. Again, this is just my opinion. The creators refuse to give us answer, so us as the audience have to in-visualize it.
I think Nanashi's few tiny drops of blood verses Luo-Lang's massive pool hinted that Nanashi's wound was not fatal and Kotaro's "useless" treasure actually saved his life. Thanks for crushing my feels though! DX
I love this movie and this soundtrack. It's so freakin heartwarming, even the music for its bloody-gorey battle scenes is calming. I'm making a very zenful music video with it for a class.
when i think, that not more can surprise me, and i just quiet. I hear this song, and my soul travelers to the infinite. Epic; Show. No words to comment.
Did anyone else think of Yoko Kanno when they heard the music? It brought back memories (and tears lol) of past epic music. Absolutely wonderful!! And I set my standards to Studio Ghibli lol.

Man this song is so beautiful...yea im a dude lol and this movie is amazing. The last fight scene is so epic and I love when the flute comes in on this track !!! One of my fav movies.
i watched it 3 times for 3 years
Augh all of these emotional feelings are so annoying but I can't bring myself to stop listening. The movie is amazing, the whole story line is just the best, I would watch the movie any time over and over. But the music, it's like it just retells the whole story. I love it. ;-;
one of the best songs I've heard, you have done a super job here, thank you thank you
the music is just so pretty, and the movie was unlike anything i've seen for a long time
Wow, wonderful!
Thank you for sharing.
This is soo EPIC,
THANKS for uploading
切なく、悲しくて、でも惹かれる作品です。
主人公が、生きてて欲しい…。
DX
Well, the ending makes you make that up for yourself, I believe he lived and they are now pirates on a quest for happiness!
Lie yously And the kid became Luffy ;3
Awwww the nostalgia i was watching it when i was a little kid uuhhh i need to watch i again
A very very beautiful Soundtrack. I Love listening to it!!!!
Just i have one Word on this song, awesome !!!!
WONDERFUL MOVIE, WONDERFUL MUSIC, ESPECIALLY THE LAST BATTLE. FULL OF PASSION
man, when I hear the first song, the final battle of this movie replays in my head! =D. I love this.
This really makes me want to return to martial arts. I miss it so much. I need to while I'm young.
Did you do it?
I love this movie and this soundtrack. It's so freakin heartwarming, even the music for its bloody-gorey battle scenes is calming. I'm making a very zenful music video with it for a class.
I absolutely love this music
The Soundtrack is like a mix between „Princess Mononoke“, „Avatar the last Airbender“, „Braveheart“ and „Titanic“.
Love it.
I dont see Mononoke in this, but ok
my very best anime ever!!
i love this music so much. i think i'm crying!
when i think, that not more can surprise me, and i just quiet. I hear this song, and my soul travelers to the infinite. Epic; Show. No words to comment.
wonderful songs!!!!
Einfach nur großartig 👏😇
I always put this music when i watch the end of metal gear solid iv and it makes it the most epic scene than i have seen ever
Did anyone else think of Yoko Kanno when they heard the music? It brought back memories (and tears lol) of past epic music. Absolutely wonderful!! And I set my standards to Studio Ghibli lol.
