  • Elon Musk has amassed a fortune, but because the majority of his wealth is tied to Tesla shares and stock options, it dips and rises by the day, sometimes by more than 10 billion dollars. For about a year, it has hovered around 200 billion, more than the GDP of over 150 countries. Here’s how he became one of the world’s richest people, and where he spends his money.

This is very misleading and misinformation from this business channel or paper called Business Insider. 90% of his net worth or wealth is tied to his Tesla shares and if Tesla stock goes down his net worth goes down significantly as well and vice versa. But it’s not like the way it’s described here, he is not sitting around with billions in cash nor he can sell his Tesla shares whenever he wants. Do better business Insider.

@@Wsdf-dm2htso what? Why shouldn’t she complain? People like Musk are a large part of why there’s vast poverty in the world. He’s taken advantage of the trickle down economics of the Reagan-era. He just didn’t get the part where Reagan said in order for his economic policy to work, the rich actually had to participate in it. People have every right to complain, just like Musk does about everyone else.

I had initially planned to retire at 62, work part-time, and save money, but the impact of high prices on various goods and services has significantly disrupted my retirement plan. I'm worried about whether those who experienced the 2008 financial crisis had it easier than I currently am. The volatility of the stock market is a concern as my income has decreased, and I fear that I won't be able to contribute as much as before, potentially jeopardizing my retirement savings.

I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

The video fails to distinguish what Shares are and what cash is. Elon Musk does not have 200bn in cash in a bank. He has shares in Tesla, which mean that he gets a check every month from Tesla - a the amount depends on the Share price.
He has also taken many risks which paid off. Electric cars were not a sound venture when he embarked upon mass production of these. But it worked and he is reaping the rewards.
People are buying his products and investing in his companies. There is great confidence in him, hence the investments. It's not just Elon making these companies successful, it is a wide group of individuals and innovators.
The video fails to articulate the good that Elon Musk has achieved. It is no mean feat - the speaker in the video has a disdain and possibly jealousy for Musk. She is quite sarcastic when describing is acquisition of Twitter - for the record, Twitter was losing a lot of money which is why they were ripe for acquisition. I also note the tone - she is a liberal as she describes Musk as a right-wing darling. Note: he isn't right wing.
Not the standard I would have expected from Business Insider.

      @@kaustubh42020
Philanthropy is defined as the act of donating money, resources, or time to improve the lives of others. It's not measured merely by the amount or percentage of wealth given away but by the donations' scale and effect. Philanthropy includes contributions of any size, with the focus on the intention behind and the impact of the giving, rather than the precise amount or wealth percentage. Whether it's significant donations from the wealthy or smaller, regular gifts from those with less, all are valued if they aim to benefit the public good. The emphasis lies on the purpose and outcome of the donations rather than their financial value. However, giving $50 as a person of limited means is still much easier and less impactful than a wealthy individual donating billions.

@kaustubh42020 lol well, only by an arbitrary measure of percentage. That's by no means an accurate statement, nor the only measure of philanthropy. That is a pretty disingenuous measure. By actual measure, thats saying 50% of $100 is more effective than 1.8 billion dollars, which by every measure of reality would just make you sound ridiculously stupid.

You are confusing wealth with money. His wealth can go up and down by the billions with whatever mood the stock exchange is in. He made exactly zero dollars at Tesla for the last 5-6 years because a Delaware judge has a limited understanding of this too.We don't actually make money we invest until we sell off those investments and even then the market has to be cooperating. As for rent.....his 500 sq.ft. casita in Texas probably ranks in the far low end scale of rentals nationwide. A lot of people make assumptions based on previous biases and the FUD that legacy media churns out every day. Any headline with Musk in it gets more clicks than without it. Skew it so it sounds negative and the clicks go up even more. Musk is a true humanitarian just by making space travel and global internet possible, EVs possible and affordable, and a myriad of other good things that the media doesn't like to focus on because "Elon Bad" sells and "Elon Good" doesn't.

The political spectrum is exactly that, a unidimensional graph, I can't quite believe how many people out there believe that establishing oneself with a bias to either end of that would be okay.
This spectrum has the intrinsic property that any bias is a 1:1 relational tradeoff; surely, from the perspective of anyone with a political bias, someone with many unrelated ideas from both sides is more likely to be central than identifiably on the far-side?
This is an understandable mischaracterisation, but it's important to admit to oneself in that situation that the perspective would be inherently limited and, obviously, not broadcast such claims on this basis - especially when that someone exclaims time and time again that they do everything to remain as central/balanced as they can (unlike most).
