Using the Roland TD 17 Drum Module SUB Function

  • In this video, I explain how to use the 'SUB' function on the Roland TD17 Drum Module.
    The SUB function enables you to 'layer' sounds on your drum pads or zones of your pads - an example I use in this video is combining a tambourine sound with a Hi-Hat sound.
    You'll also discover how to switch from one sound to another depending on how hard you hit the respective pad.
    You can use the SUB function with user samples you've imported - if you haven't yet imported user samples into your Roland TD17, you might find my 'How to import user samples' video helpful and can be found here: • Roland TD 17 - How to ...
    If you have any questions, please let me know in a comment and I'll do my best to help you.
    If you find this video useful, please give it a thumbs up (and if you could Subscribe, that would be great!)
    Thanks for being here and thanks for watching :)

    Fade in - very useful. One application - select a fat sounding snare as your main sound. Then load in a bright rimshot snare in the sub layer. Have the sub layer fade in based on velocity. So the harder you play the pad, the more you hear the brighter, rimshot sample, while still hearing the original fat snare. This mimics real drums, where the harder you hit, the harder and brighter the drum sounds.

    Off topic question: I bought the drum-tec downloadable kits (2 of them) and managed to get them imported into my TD17. Wow. This is what I thought I was getting when I purchased the TD17. SOunds are exactly what I heard in my head. Problem was, when I listened in my headphones, sounds great, when I came out the back to the module out of the L/R into my recorder, all the sounds sounded just lke the kits in the TD17. Digital, synthesized, like paper tearing. an underlying "shhttt" sound on every kit. I have tried to go in and turn off all reverbs, effects, diffusions, anything I can think of. But it's like a global effect has been placed in front of the L/R outputs. Does anyone know how to turn off this distracting effect? I had to record out of the headphone jack. I don't think the outputs are defective, it is a very subtle annoyance.

    Great job!
    Question. Say you have the tambourine set for header hits.
    Now you are playing live, and RECORDING with your band.
    How concerned would you be that you would accidentally hit too hard once or twice and get the wrong sound‽
    Thanks!

    • @davidmearsuk
      @davidmearsuk  5 лет назад

      Thanks Jim. For live performance or recording, personally, I'd assign a tambourine to the hi-hat head rather than use the sub function, but leave the hi-hat sample on the hi-hat rim. For my hi-hat technique, that would guarantee the respective sounds are triggered when I want them to be. Hope this helps.

    Ok, I have a question, I’m setting up a “user kit” I’m putting an 18” China and a brass snare layered on the rim of one of the triggers. I successfully did that, now for one of the songs my band plays, I need the reverb knob on full blast, is there a way to program this to just that particular trigger layering without me having to 1) manually turn up the ambience knob each verse in the song, and 2)not having the ambience affect the entire hit? Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Good morning David , could you explain to me how to correctly configure a CY13R cymbal on my td17, I can't get the 3 zones to work and I think that with the Sub function I could do it., I connect the RD and RDB cable but the cymbal is muted with a metallic sound , but if I change the the cable the zones work but the bell sound is in the edge and the head in the the bell.

    Hello!! I write to see if you can help me. A few days ago I bought a Roland Td 17 v-drum and I can not load different samples on the hi hat for when I close it and open it, could you explain how to do it? I'm not finding information about it to load samples with regards to open and closed hihat. I hope you can help me, thank you very much, I hope you are well.

    • @davidmearsuk
      @davidmearsuk  5 лет назад

      Hi Groovers Estudio. Thank you for watching and for your question.
      As far as I am aware, the TD17 Drum Module doesn't provide the option to assign a unique sample to the open hi-hat. On closing the hi-hat it seems to trigger the sample assigned to the head.
      I can only see options to assign samples the head and/or rim of the hi-hat pad, but not specifically to the open hi-hat.
      I can only assume at this stage that the TD17 'magically' uses the standard hi-hat samples to emulate the sound of an open hi-hat. As an example of this, I've found that it is possible to assign a hi-hat sample to the rim of tom 2, which automatically reacts to the opening and closing of the hi-hat without needing to make any changes to the settings.
      Please, if you find a method of assigning a unique sample to the open hi-hat, post it here for others to learn from. Also, if you find that more advanced Roland drum modules offer the feature you'd like, it would be great to know that too.
      Thanks again. All the best :)

      David Mears this is the answer that Michael Schack has given me about loading samples of hh open and closed in V Drums Roland Td17:
      Hi, the Roland HH open/close technology works only with internal sounds, as it uses multi layer cross velocity switches and MIDI cc control protocol. But you can layer any sound, also imported on top of both the bow and edge of the HH sounds. Grtz

      Hi Zac. Thanks for watching and for your question. Apologies, I don't own a CY-8 however, I believe you can assign two samples to the pad? Not sure if velocity triggering can be used as well? If so, you could assign a bell sample in addition to the standard ride cymbal sound. Hope this helps.
