    I've found over years that just jamming with a great general soundset is the thing to do. When I can set the levels of the kit pieces, and I like the kit, it's jam on. The TD-17 kicks it. I'm an owner of lots of top stuff, and I've sold my eighty guitars, my huge drumsets, my twenty basses and my three motorcycles for a moment of simplicity with all things of joy. I know this is personal, but it is something to consider. If I jam my ass off on a tune with the very first preset on the TD-17, I yell with joy.

    Cheers from Texas. Great video. Thank you for the post. I chose to buy this module to get more trigger inputs. I was told (and hopefully this is correct) that I can connect my TD-25 via the "Mix In" port on TD-17 to expand the trigger inputs. We'll see. If not I guess I'll have to buy a mixer I guess.

    Good review, it's always nice to have an updated review vs rushed reviews released by bigger outlets.
    Have you had much experience using VST's on Windows vs macOS? I see macOS is used quite often for stuff like SD3 and people claim they have better latency vs Windows. Just wondering if this is true and if it's a software/hardware thing, or is this based on something that happened in the past but may not even be an issue today?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with MacOS at all so couldn't say. I use Windows myself and don't run VSTs that often for playing, I mostly use them for playing back captured MIDI for recording. Justin over at 65 Drums did a video recently about Mac vs PC for VSTs which could probably shed more light on the matter. It does appear from other people's reports that Macs just seem to be better with audio latency in general, but I'm only going off what I've read/watched so can only really direct to that.

  • @turke765

    This video got me wondering, not sure if you would see this, but are you worried about the newer digital roland cymbals for the mid-lower end users? I just feel these USB inputs are going to become more and more common (albeit slowly) and roland will use it to vendor-lock you into their products. Also, a lot of older modules won't have it, so budget users will eventually be constrained and pushed into buying newer products that support them, even if it wasn't their intention. And one last point is the repairability, using the USB input suddenly makes it a lot more proprietary, you can't just buy a cheapo stereo cable when those USB inputs hardwired into the cymbal go bad.

  • @pelletmobile2

    Hi, you can split the midi in a DAW like Reaper. In the DAW split to each individual note out and every midi not on a seperate channel. There are youtube videos that show you how. I think td17 is a great module and i even use it Live..ive seen artist use it to, like micheal schack and i know uses it, though he does sound design for these module.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 года назад

      Yes, I'm aware of splitting MIDI in a DAW (I do it myself regularly on other modules) but I was more focusing on what's available inside the module. Definitely handy for recording individual tracks through the TD-17 though if you want to use the onboard sounds on a record.
      I also think it's a great module, it's just a shame there's a couple of things that stop it being a perfect module at this price point. You absolutely can use it live if you're happy to work around the limitations (or if they happen not to be a problem in your situation). Thanks for watching and weighing in :)

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop keep up the good work, i like your channel.. Pretty sure Roland will have the next step up in kits soon. Wouldnt be supprised all digital kits, usb hihat and cymbals. I think they need to get a better out of the box sound though, realistic sounds like The Strike pro.. i think have have been taking notes after that Alesis strike pro module came out and took some of the market from them. But Roland make great rock solid stuff, but you pay for it.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 года назад

      Thanks! Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if they eventually move to all digital, or at least more so for things like cymbals and (hopefully) the hi-hat, as you say. There's just more possibilities there, though the downside is being locked in.
      I agree on the quality/price and also on the sounds too, hopefully we'll see something more impressive on the next gen!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 года назад

      Ah, I think you've misunderstood the context of this (understandable, there's a bit of presumed knowledge of what's being referred to).
      I said in the review that it's only possible to record a stereo output through a computer with the TD-17 and the MIDI information, no multi-tracks. This reply is letting me know that it's possible to split the MIDI information in a DAW in order to allow you to feed the individual MIDI notes back into the module to record separate instruments (you would have to send the individual pads back one by one and record them in real time to do this). My reply was saying yes, I know that is possible but I just wanted to focus on what the module lets you do "in the box," as it were - but also acknowledging that it's a useful thing if you need to do it (though time-consuming).
      Hope that helps!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 года назад

      Hey! Yeah, effectively. You will basically need to record the MIDI, then split the MIDI into separate MIDI tracks containing the individual drums (or groups of drums if you prefer). Some DAWs have an option to do this automatically (it might be named something along the line of "split MIDI into tracks" or "explode MIDI"), on others you might need to do it manually by duplicating the track a number of times and deleting what you do not need from each one.
      Then you can send that MIDI back out into the TD-17 track by track, it will only play the sounds you're sending and you can capture each sound/group on their own track. It can be a bit time consuming as you will need to record every instrument in real time but it will give you more control over the final mix if recording the module sounds is what you want to do but you need more flexibility.

  • @mygr4ins417

    Let me start by saying your video tutorial on how to mount anything to a Gibraltar cymbal rack was so helpful to me, it's the entire foundation my setup stands on "literally"... OK, so here is my situation. I have loaded up some user samples, and they are 808 style kick drums, they sustain for a bit, and remain in key. On my mid tom I have a loaded a user sample that is a kick in the key of B, and on the low tom a sample that is in the key of E. Is there a way to set it up where the mid tom pad mutes the low tom pad or vice versa? It's so the notes do not conflict. Also your video about hooking the TD-17 to a USB middi host was very helpful. Thanks for your time

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 года назад +1

      Hey! I'm really glad it helped! If I remember rightly, there is no "mute group" feature on the TD-17. That is what you would need to make that work. On the 27 and 50X, there is a section for it under the kit menu where you can add different pads to different groups that will mute each other, but I'm pretty sure it's not in the 17. I'm not with my module to check but I don't remember seeing it, unfortunately.

      The TD-17 mount can be flipped to either point downwards or sideways, so it's a little more flexible than you'd expect. If you point it down, you can mount it into a cymbal stand that has a 7/8" (I think) hole. You could also have it sideways and use an adjustable multiclamp. Here's a video I did about replacing racks with stands that should contain the info you need -

This is my first ekit, and the limitations you spoke of, especially the heaphone/master out... yeah, SUCKS!! The midi in hasn't been an issue yet, but will be in the not too distant future. My big problem so far is, and I'm not sure if this is typically the case, but is it normal to not have the ability to separate my input tracks into my daw, and actually use the sounds I've spent countless hours tweaking? It isn't readily apparent how or even if I can do this. I'm not incredibly experienced at much of anythng in this new venture, except just playing. I've got that down, but am learning edrums, and recording. If you or anyone reading this could tell me if it's possible to input my individual drums into StudioOne 4 without using sonething like SSD or Superior Drummer. Yeah, it is a bit of a shame. It won't be a deal breaker for everyone - you can always use a separate headphone amp if needed which wouldn't be as expensive as the upgrade to a 27. The digital snare and ride play amazingly well, yeah. The best pads I've used. However, I am using a very good internal side trigger for the snare on my Mimic along with a BT-1 for cross-stick and, besides the lack of positional sensing, it's really close. The Mimic doesn't do positional sensing and centre cone triggers can be pretty bad for hotspots (I've not used one that doesn't do that). So a good analogue trigger can get close, but the lack of hot spot on the digital snare, accurate positional sensing on the snare and ride and the feel of the ride cymbal still beat anything else at the moment.

      For the 17, you don't really need to bother with a centre cone trigger as there's no PS. Means you can avoid the hot spot that way. If you're thinking budget, the PDX-12 is a pretty good shout. It can be mounted to a snare stand and it's pretty low cost, but still a reasonable size. It was brought out for the 17 so works well with it. If you want something a bit bigger or more solid, doing an A2E snare is always an option. Depends what's most important to you, really.

      I understand, it's pretty awkward. But no, there's no kit between them. They've tried to align this generation now to all be "7" (apart from the TD-50). So in order of "lowest tech" to "highest" it currently goes - TD-07, TD-17, TD-27 then TD-50 is the current flagship. They all came out in a different order so there's some slight discrepancies between their capabilities, but that's the order of their intended market from beginner to pro. There are a few kits in some of the ranges and they're usually labelled K for the "lower" one, then KV, then KVX - though sometimes they don't follow that exactly either so it's worth looking at the pad setups if unsure.
      There's also the VAD line which they're treating as separate, but they run with the current gen "7" modules. The VAD306 uses the TD-17, the VAD503 and 506 use the TD-27. Hope that helps clear things up.

      The TD-25 is from the last generation and is basically the last gen version of the 27. I was only really talking about the current gen. It's not a terrible module and some people still love it, but it's very limited for a mid-tier (can't assign different sounds to the rim zones of toms) and doesn't have many of the features that even the 07 and 17 currently have.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Great video! I have the TD-25 now, and just got a TD-4 for expanding additional pads. Thinking about the 17 to replace the TD-4, but after your last comment, would you suggest making the 17 my primary and my old 25 as the slave module?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 года назад

      @@briangannon71 Thank you! In regards to which to use as your "main" module, that really depends on which you like the sound of the most. If I was combining 2 modules in that way and I, for example, liked the snares and kicks in the 25 but the toms and cymbals of the 17, I'd plug those pads into those modules and mix the audio.
      Also, by "slave", are you referring to MIDI or just the prominence in your setup?

      Hey! The strainer function works, as far as I remember. Though the effect is pretty subtle - you can't turn it off entirely, and the differences between loose and tight are just a little bit of wire buzz sustain.

      Yeah, it's unfortunate. The only decent way to do it is to use a sample and then layer it on top of a tom, using some modelling/tuning to get it to sit well. That's how I did it for my kits.

    Its weird when I got the EDW heavy packs the tom1 tom2 tom3 has some king of ring like reverb while my newly added pdx8 as floor tom4 tru aux doesnt have this and sounds flat.. is there a way to copy EDW tom3 settings?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 года назад

      Hi! Thanks for your purchase and for getting in touch! Yes, the Huge 'N' Heavy kits were designed for 3 toms which means that the settings for the AUX pad's Ambience and EQ are optimised for the cymbals that I put on that input . If you change the instrument to a tom, you will need to adjust some of the other settings to bring it in line with the others.
      There is no copy option for these settings so you will need to do them manually. If you go into the respective menus and adjust them to the same values as Tom 3, they should come out sounding much closer. These include -
      OTHER > AMBIENCE (you'll need to open the Send tab, note the value from tom 3 then change the Aux value to the same)
      OTHER > MULTI FX (same process as the Ambience)
      OTHER > PAD EQ - again, swap the values to the same as Tom 3. You can swap between them by hitting the pads and adjust each Freq and Gain value to match
      I might have also used extra instruments on the SUB layer of some toms - I can't quite remember which. The best thing to do would be to check if the SUB layer is enabled on Tom 3 and if it is, try using a similar SUB instrument in the Aux pad and match the difference in tuning between the two layers, if that makes sense.
      I hope that helps. If you have any trouble with it, feel free to email me through the store with more details and I'll do what I can to help.

    Hi! Great review! I would like to ask you something that happens to me and I do not see anybody speaking about it. I have the TD17 module on a VAD 306. When I import my own sounds, for example a ride cymbal, if I hit it twice then the second hit mutes the first, creating a really weird and unnatural sensation. Typical situation when hitting the ride alternating one hard and one soft hit in a groove. The soft hit does not overlap and mix with the first, but it kind of replaces it creating a drastic decay between the hard it and the soft one.
    I hope my explanation was clear enough so that you could give me an opinion of how to solve this. I was able to improve the performance by crating another sublayer but it’s not ideal.
    Obviously, this behavior does not occur with the preset the TD17 comes with.
    Thank you!

      Hello i saw you have a VAD 306 - I have a TD17 KV and i love it., question how does your snare sound, do you get any hotspotting with that pad or your floor tom pad. im pretty sure those are 12 in pads and they look awesome and must feel great. im thinking about upgrading my PDX100 snare to the PDA120LS like yours. My snare has side a mount trigger so it has pretty good response, what trigger does your snare have? Side trigger or center cone or 3 cone triggers. Im pretty sure your toms PDA100L have the side trigger. just wondering what you think about your snare because im really thinking about getting one. Thanks

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Hi Hernan. Really sorry I didn't reply to this so long ago, must have missed it. I don't know if you ended up resolving this, but the reason for that is that the default setting when importing samples is the "One Shot Mono" play type. This means that if the sample is played multiple times, the second version will cut off the first. If the second hit is a similar velocity it might not be noticeable but if it's really soft, this makes it sound really unnatural. The play type of the sample needs to be set to "One Shot Poly" to fix this. This allows multiple versions of the sample to overlap each other.

    you need to EQ or compress your dialogue a tad..maybe 150 to 500....The continuous clip edit and cuts become wearing after a short time... So then you turn down and acoustically somethings missing. I cut around 350hz allot and it was better and perhaps dynamically compress 100hz a little. Wont sound as good but will solve the problem area....
    Or take longer rests from talking every 30 seconds or so....

      Thanks for the feedback. This video is quite old and I had a pretty problematic mic, this was after I'd tried to salvage the audio that recorded terribly. Newer videos shouldn't have that issue. I personally think I've managed to do a better job of the edits in newer videos too, so you might find those an easier watch. It can be a bit of a struggle to try and balance the need to keep people's attention on RUclips and to fit in a lot of information and I definitely struggled with that in the past, so any feedback like this has helped shape my newer content. I hope it doesn't put you off entirely, cheers.
