Hi Shawn! I have been watching your videos for over. 2 years now and I have been wondering if you could set up ALL of ur mouse traps for one video I imagine this would be difficult because idk if you have that many trail cams or not. But please at the end of 2020 do it if you can’t afford all the baits I would be happy to donate and you could advertise this and leave links to the vids of the mouse traps you already had. Sincerely Kenden

The rat is not smart enough to understand the trap mechanism and all its implications. In context the rat just decided to chew on a stick and it happened to touch the trap. Further, for such new knowledge to become part of species evolution it would have to live long enough to pass this along to future generations.

Suggestion: Use a router or wood chisel to create a groove for the trap door to seat into, or attach a metal-strip barrier on the "barn" floor, against the closed trap door, to make it harder for a trapped rat to pry up the closed trap door. (Of course, if the rats won’t trip it to start with, there’s little point.)

Dad would dig post holes for new fence lines with the tractor and a post hole auger he made. He worked off the farm so him digging post holes would often be all the work that could be done that weekend and planting the posts might not happen for weeks. Our family (8 kids) is full of conservationists so every other day or so, someone would run the line of holes and release anything that got trapped by accident. Once I pulled out a garter snake that was missing a few inches of his tail. It was a fairly fresh wound so he had had a lucky escape from predation. I brought him home ( metal lunch boxes were so useful for this!) He was released in the backyard that evening and once or twice I happened upon him over the next few years around the back yard or the barnyard. About 5 years after I had left the farm, one spring day during a visit, some neighbour kids had come over to see the horse's and I spotted them in an excited circle near the barn. I heard screams of 'snake' and 'kill it' as they formed up in a loose circle. One was brandishing a stick so I yelled at them and ran over to see what they were preparing to kill and darn, if it was not Stubby, grown to an impressive 3 feet or more and a girth of nearly 3 inches. He likely was not long emerged from hibernation and was cold and had a belly full of some rat or other that he'd caught and was looking for a warm sunny spot to digest. He wasn't moving all that fast and was now surrounded by kids that didn't know they were looking at one of the best pest control agents on the farm! I educated them that day and was greatly pleased to see that he was still alive and healthy and doing his best to rid the farmyard of rats. But I digress. That rat that used the stick to set off the trap really impressed me. That is TOOL USE! We had caught a kangaroo rat once the same way and because it was something I had never seen before (nor since), I brought it home and quickly installed it in one of mom's sealer jars with a bunch of holes punched in the lid. One of my older brothers was into rodents at that time and had a cage for it. That rat was so easy to teach that within a day it had solved a number of mazes including one that required it to draw a shoe lace in to get the treat. It provided much entertainment over the weekend ( we lived in Northern Ontario, 20 miles from the nearest city and only had 1 reliable TV channel, so we had to make our own much of the time ). It was hard to part with Roo as he was so smart and quick to learn new tricks and he seemed to have the makings of a great pet, but caught in the wild belongs in the wild so I reluctantly released him near the post hole I rescued him from on my way to school Monday morning. Never caught nor saw another.

I tried to catch mice with strickem pad but no go, put milk jug lid in center of stick pad with treats! I saw one piece of cedar kindling on ground under pad an table. Something carried that stick of kindling to table top an placed it as bridge across to food over sticky pad! I took picture of kindling laying on pad to treats! Cool!

Thank you Shawn. I have benefited from your videos. And today i was face to face with a red squirrel. It got trapped in my garage. I took out my peppermint spray. But i found i was just being unkind, as it had no way out. So i just opened my garage and hope it made a better choice.
