Many children were actually traumatized by Optimus Prime's death. Hasbro received a tremendous amount of complaints from parents. The whole thing was urgent enough to call an emergency meeting and work towards Prime's revival in the following season of the cartoon.

Not only that but the ending of GI Joe was changed at the last minute. Duke was supposed to die as his toy line was discontinued. There’s a brief scene of Scarlett popping her head in to say something like, “Duke’s gonna make it”.
As the purpose of the shows was simply to sell the figures, after a line ended they just killed the character off. Hasbro certainly traumatized a lot of kids in 86, and angered their parents as well.

The invasion of the Autobot shuttle hits so differently if you watched it as a kid vs if you never grew up with it and are watching it for the first time now.
For us it was about the brutally violent deaths of four major characters from the first two seasons. (I personally found Prowl’s death rather creepy, with the glowing eyes and smoke from the mouth)
In fact the body count was really rather shocking given that no one ever died in the original series.
For reactors today, it’s “what? Megatron turned into a gun?”

from what I heard, Hasbro wanted to kill off characters in order to sell toys of new characters that they wanted to push on us kids at the time... "no one's going to miss Optimus, surely Rodimus will work as a substitute, right?" - they didn't know the trauma they would cause by doing that and the backlash that followed. - It was a marketing ploy... no such thing as reissues and homages and masterpieces at the time. No live-action Michael Bay version, no Cyberverse version, etc. all they had was Gen1 cartoon, and they wanted to sell more toys - and even to this day, if there's nothing selling, then we don't continue to get awesome collectibles... it's a cycle and the reality of business, so I personally can't blame Hasbro too much for wanting to stay in business. Just hate that it took traumatizing us as kids to do it.

  • @falcon048
    @falcon048 9 месяцев назад +49

I saw this in the theaters when it came out. It was fairly shocking. It was the first time a kids cartoon movie had a hard-rock soundtrack. It also had the main beloved characters die. Yes, this movie's SOLE premise was to kill off the old characters to make way for new characters. However, they hadn't considered the attachment that kids had to those old characters. So much hate mail filled the offices that they were forced to alter the production of G.I.Joe the Animated Movie, because they were going to kill off Duke and others for the same reason. That's why, in that movie, Duke miraculously comes out of his coma at the end, despite never showing him alive.
Transformers the movie is also the very LAST movie that Orson Wells did. He died shortly there after and Leonard Nimoy was brought in to loop a few of his lines post production.

I don't think it's ever been stated that Nimoy recorded any of the Unicron lines. Most official sources say Wells did them all, and that rumors spread that Nimoy did the last few lines of Unicron.

Yes. The purpose of the movie was to kill off the characters who’s toys were being discontinued and introduce the new toys.
However the producers didn’t realize how beloved Optimus Prime was (this film began production around the 1st season of the show in 1984 before the could know) they quickly realized and brought Optimus back in the series a year later with a new toy replacing Rodimus Prime.

The insane five faced Quintesson judges were the creators of the Transformers, millions of years before the movie. They've mostly gone insane over the millennium and their empire collapsed.
The Quintessons made robots for the neighboring organic species to use as slaves- military models for fighting wars and domestic models for construction, transportation, etc.
The robots eventually overthrew their creators and eventually their distinct nature's brought them into conflict- the former military models became Decepticons and the domestic units were the ancestors of the Autobots.
And they've been fighting mostly non-stop ever since.
The Autobot Matrix Of Leadership is a repository of the knowledge of all their past leaders- and a means to upgrade whatever leader it seems worthy.
It imparts wisdom but can also be used to commune with the "souls" of past leaders.
(Like the Black Panther herb does in Marvel, kinda).

This was traumatic as a kid in the 80s watching this at 5am in the morning back in 1987 seeing the autobots getting wiped out, ironhide killed with megatrons cannon to the face and then the hardest death scene too watch, the death of optimus prime. im not ashamed to say that i cried hard as a little kid. you have to understand back then optimus prime was a role model an icon to us kids and when his death hit it was like losing a member of your family. some kids even locked themselves in their room it was that powerful. Hasbro had no idea what they were doing. they thought they were just getting rid of the old toyline and bringing in the new one. they had no idea they were about to piss off and make so many boys cry back then. Which is why they bring him back in later seasons and they changed the script in GI JOE THE MOVIE (which came out at the same time as TF:TM) with the killing off of another main character DUKE. but regardless of mine and countless others childhood trauma, this continues to be my favourite movie to this day. awesome animation, excellent story, filled with 80s rock and nostalgia. Even the live action transformers movies dont come close to this. TILL ALL ARE ONE!!

I remember this movie from when I was a kid. Back then, there was talk about kids shows/movies getting too violent or being too commercialized for selling toys. Us kids didn't care about any of that, we just wanted to watch and play with the toys, but looking back, I think the shock of Optimus's death was the turning point against the industry at the time. That was when they had finally gone too far given what it did to so many kids. The animated G.I. Joe movie's change was the first notable one. Since then, they've progressively dialed it back bit by bit to get the lame shows we have now.
The 90s animated shows like X-Men, Batman, Gargoyles, etc., were as close to a balance as the industry was ever going to get. Since then, if you want something animated that's not lame but not something like South Park/Family Guy/Sponge Bob/etc., you have to go to anime now...

Transformers was my favorite cartoon growing up, because it was one of the few that I felt wasn't talking down to me (I was five when it started airing). The best part of this movie for me was the depictions of how each faction handled succession, because it underlined the differences in their philosophies better than anything that had happened previously. Optimus knew he was dying and attempted to choose his successor; whereas Megatron, on the verge of death, refused to let go of his status, was discarded as trash by his not-so-trusted second, and succession was decided through trial by combat. Obviously I couldn't articulate it in just that way when I was seven; I just thought it was a really cool scene.

I was 8 when this movie came out. When I saw it, it was the first time that I had dealt with the concept of death. Seeing my favorite Transformer characters dying was definitely a shocker. In retrospect, it was very risky for them at that time to take that kind of approach with a cartoon series as they transitioned between seasons.

    • @Madbandit77
      @Madbandit77 9 месяцев назад +1

Not for me. I was the same age you were, but I already saw the "Sesame Street" episode "Farewell, Mr. Hooper", in 1983, where Big Bird had to accept that his friend had died. The actor who played Mr. Hooper died in 1982, and the show's producers planned to replace the actor, but the staff psychiatrist said no because they wanted to expose children to the concept of death. The episode aired on Thanksgiving Day, 40 years ago. I turned six the previous day, but I grew up a little more when I cried for Big Bird since he lost a friend. I learned about empathy.
Crying over an animated character's death seems silly to me because that's all the character is. Crying over a real human being's passing and the sorrow of his friends isn't silly at all.

Also am very happy to see a large majority of their fans not only enjoyed the film reaction but are also oldschool TF fans like myself. Was so happy to bring back some energetic nostalgia for all of ya with the film, the toys, and that hair rising soundtrack that never gets old.
Though i did want to give some suggestions on episodes for kind of an abridged key episode binge if the Mr/Mrs or anyone else here want to watch the G1 series:
    [Season 1]
-More Than Meets the Eye (pilot episodes 1, 2, and 3)
-Fire in the Sky (great episode with the Robotech toy that became a Transformer, SkyFire (aka Jetfire)
-SOS DinoBots (debut of the DinoBots and yes they were created by Wheeljack/Ratchet with Spikes knowledge of Dinos like everyone’s saying here)
-The Ultimate Doom (parts 1, 2, and 3) (partly what Transformers Dark of the Moon based its story on)
-War of the Dinobots (debut of Swoop & Snarl)
-A Plague of Insecticons (debut of the Insecticons)
-Heavy Metal War (debut of Devastator)
    [Season 2]
-Megatron's Master Plan (parts 1 & 2) (also partly what Transformers Dark of the Moon based its story on)
-The Key to Vector Sigma (parts 1 & 2)
-StarScream's Brigade (great episode for Starscream)
[Season 3 (after the events of the Movie)]
-The Five Faces of Darkness 5 parter story (gives background on the Quintessons from the film)
-Ghost in the Machine (if you want to see what happens to StarScream and Unicron’s Head)
-Call of the Primatives (great episode for Grimlock)
-Dark Awakening (pre-story to the last 2 episodes)
-The Return of Optimus Prime (parts 1 & 2. Redeems the sad part of the movie.)
Don’t bother with the Japanese Headmasters series as it’s its own continuity after season 3 and quite depressing/nonsensical (imo).
All are available to watch for free on RUclips.

It will star Chris Hemsworth as the voice of Optimus Prime, but when he was younger and did not have the matrix of leadership. His name will be "Orion Pax". Lol...I'll never forget how when we came back from summer vacation (it came out August 8th, 1986, and we went back to school like 3 weeks later), it was ALL we could talk about at the lunch table!! Optimus Prime was my immediate favorite, and throughout G1, and the Michael Bay movies, (I never watched the later cartoons) that never changed. From day one, G1 Optimus Prime somehow always reminded me of John Wayne. (A solid, tough character.) As it turned out, they did indeed base some of his character on John Wayne. Makes sense why he would be an instant favorite, for me. Other than Optimus Prime, Ironhide (also voiced by Peter Cullen) was my second favorite. Favorite Decepticons: Megatron, then Shockwave.
