Well done, Sergey. One of the better tutorials I've found on RUclips. Sometimes it seems artists do these just to say, "This is what I can do and you can't." But in his narrative, Sergey gives enough info to make it useful - a light pencil sketch to start, and of course be able to draw all proportions perfectly because otherwise your portrait will never look right. Then he describes the paints he uses for the eyes, cool & warm shadows, highlights, etc. All in all, well worth watching.
This is not a tutorial, but just a skill. You will not be able to repeat it, because the person does not show you the stages of work (which he was taught), but only the end result.
Painting with oil is a completely different compared to pencilsketches. To get used to the new medium you can start with painting a tomato. Less difficult to sketch, less shadows, but you'll lose the fear of painting with oil.
correct. if you cannot make a face with a pencil, pen or any other medium, you can't with paint either. Same rules, same hand and arm techniques, understanding of anatomy, light and shadow, drapery, color theory and general experience.
I am a very good sketcher but now learning how to paint. I love your tutorial on portraits which is my specialty in sketching. I will apply your technique. Thanks for revealing how to mix the different oil paints and expressing the importance of shadows understanding light (warm) and dark (cold). It makes all the difference. I have subscribed.
Great video Sergey, and beautiful portrait. I've painted with acrylics for years and never had the confidence to try oils, but you make the techniques really accessible, will give it a go this weekend!
i love your simple way of explanation especially on the part of color mixing, very informative and easy to follow...you are doing a great work and just want to say thank you ...
I wanted to learn to paint in oils because I find acrylic doesn't give me that soft realistic look in portraits. Great video with so much valuable information. Also Sergey's voice is so calming, I could listen to him for hours. 🙂
I have just started with sketching my late wife, just looking at my sketch is very emotional. Vaseline on the lens was a Movie cameraman trick - want a soft flattering look. Impressionist if you like. Wish me luck with my first portrait. My 'copies' if Van Gogh and Picasso are worthy.
Very fine tutorial. Very easy to follow because it was so well photographed that it was possible to follow every little step in the process and you also talked and explained what and how you did every little step. Thank you very much for sharing this approach to painting a portrait.
it was my first time painting with oils today but i was surprised when it didn't look like a beginner piece at all. it was probably about the fact that i haad experience from painting with acrylics and already learning the basics about light and dark already but never the less it made me really happy. so dont look at it and give up because it looks too hard cause besides the extra stuff to use, its pretty simple.
Way to go. I really 👍 like the simple process. Especially the advice about going lighter and darker.. And what happens when you mix them up.. Looking flat and boring. Well done
A lot of this I already knew, but a little something extra for me just clicked while I was watching you paint! Not all the light parts of the face (or the dark parts) get the same amount of light (or shadow). It seems like a pretty simple observation, true, but there was a bit of dissonance with the thought while painting previous paintings. I feel like I can apply the concept more effectively, now. :) Sometimes it's impossible to put what's missing into words, but I feel like I got it now
Brooklyn “....not all the light parts of the face get the same amount of light.” Correct. The face is composed of curved forms...nose, cheeks, eye lids etc. You might review videos that show how light shining on a sphere creates a sense of volume . The gradation of light to dark shows how light behaves as it shines on a rounded surface.
Amazing job! I really like this process, I've been meaning to paint with oils for a while but have been discouraged alot. But this motivates me! thank you!
it's a wonderful painting, very good explication, thank you you helped me to understand the proportion of shadows and lights everywhere in the portrait
Same here. but then again he's using oils. I've been used to acrylics lately and their short dry time and having to use extenders and medium. It's about time I get back into oils! Great vid
Paperbackwriter Stop being a sissy and go spend $50 on some basic oils. You'll never know if you never try, right? Start with a basic colors set and some medium and solvent. You won't regret it. It has a reasonably steep learning curve if you're just starting, but if you can already paint with WC/Acrylic, you're 90% there already. Good luck and happy painting! 👍
Very helpful, thank you. In my perception the shadows above the upper eyelids are a little bit too dark and hard so they stick out from the rest of the face. But that is only my opinion and does not interfere with the masterskills you have.
Yes I agree - it is the best tutorial I have seen. So amazingly well shown that it is possible to follow every step, but of course you have to do many portraits before you get as fast and secure in actually mixing, painting and drawing so that you are able to make portraits that resemle the model
Thank u sooo much... Plzzzzz... make video on how to use mediums and minirals and there proportions while painting oils on different stages of painting... would be greatful to you...

You should never start working from the eye bro. The ideea is to separate light from shadow in the beginning
Hi!I appreciate the effort put in this video. But I have a question: How much did it take to finish the painting?
Hi, where can I buy the oil paint used in this video?
Do you know roughly how long this took you without the time lapse?

I love how ur showing us the sketching process before painting, not alot of artists do that!
yeah I think we have a different defination for beginners....I can't even do the starting sketch
Maybe try pencil sketch book? I started the way.
I also began with the color pencils...
Yea, I was going to say, if you can’t draw, you can forget about it. Should be called beginning oil portraiture for skilled draftsman.

joesr31 work from charcoal transfers they help too
I think before learning portrait painting...I need to learn portrait sketching.

Great tutorial, I would have loved to see slowly what happened after 14:00, that's where the face gets all those details!

@@renzo6490 Then, there is also drapery, which not only teaches you how cloth behaves, it also applies to muscle and fat deposits.
Always under a great painting is a great drawing 🖼️👍✨😎🎨
Thank you very much. You are an excellent painter and teacher.

Excellent artwork.
From what I understand your basically painting shadows first when blending lights on to it

Thank you for this demostration! Very informative
