I am all for the bike pcking trend. But unless I am riding a narrow single track, I still prefer the traditional 4 or 2 pannier setup. When not going on long tours I just remove my panniers and use my ortlieb handlebar bag, a triangle frame bag i bought off amazon for $16 and a topeak bag that slides into my back rack. In the end, i think most people mix and match and the line btwn “bike packing” and “regular” touring. Whatever works for you. It’s all good.

I love this simplicity. Makes me think of new ways to carry things

Attaching an item like this with a single bolt will tend to work loose in a high shock and vibration environment like gravel riding. These would be far superior if the were a single piece joined with a spine so that rotational forces cannot be applied to the individual pieces. Alternatively, if there was a padded vee shaped back that pressed against the fork, it might stay secure. But that would not be a universal solution.
If I were to use these, I would be sure to use threadlocker on the threads to help keep the bolts tight.
Another consideration is that these are rather expensive. Two of these brackets are $20 and two Voile straps are close to $20. For $37, you can get the Salsa Anything cage with straps. For $27 you can get the Topeak VersaCage with straps.

These would be perfect for attaching tent poles to the down tube so you wouldn't have to have them in your bag.

The design is so simple I can actually have a DIY version.

Did you test Nalgene bottles with these cages?

it would be so simple for this company to make one of these mounts with a bottom "shelf" or plate, like the bottom of the Everything Cage. That would make this system amazing and maybe a bit more trustworthy

Go to Lowes & get a 4" wide piece of steel flat, a hacksaw/grinder with cutting blade, pair of pliers, and a vice. Once to shape, drill 3 holes(1 for mounting to the bike & the other 2 for mounting bungees), and then paint to desired color. Cost? ...if you consider buying a 3 ft. piece of steel flat, how many you can build, and perhaps sell? And as far as the weight? ...It's not that dramatic of a difference ;)

Yeah but,,,, rattle can paint doesn't hold up as well as powdercoating. And underneath the rattle can paint would be a lower grade steel that's looking for the first opportunity to become a rusty eye sore.
I don't intend to be discouraging about DIY. I'm simply advising that base materials and manufacturing processes are often very superior from reputable brands. Just be mindful of how long the DIY version will last when you embark upon however many hours of effort it requires.

I like the idea, but seems a smidge pricey, especially when you include good straps like those.

imagine it will wear through your dry bag pretty quick compared to the salsa, wish there was an inbetween version

Wow, thanks for this! I can use these on the forks of my Diverge and LHT too. Plus, I can see them being used on the down tube as well.

Use a aluminum bottle cage and bend it to fit your desired size

I’ve got something for Problem Solvers (or you), I have a 27.5 fully rigid mountain bike and want to put full fenders on it but there are no holes to attach anything to and my fork doesn’t have a hole underneath - it carbon - and the surface under the fork crown is a V, not even a flat surface so maybe you could zip tie a fender on, you could but it wouldn’t stay at the right angle. I need something the attaches to the fork legs only. Same for rear triangle, no bosses but more conventional shape. Everything is carbon so don’t want to clamp anything hard on the fork or the frame. If you ever come across anything, make a video please! Oh 27.5x2.0 tires it has to cover.

These look neat for sure. Would love a long term review. Also, just realized that there's an outdoor store in Missoula called Trailhead. Ottawa, Canada has one of the same name and the lettering in the logo used to be quite similar.

Love the video and the minimal design. I'm off on another bikepacking adventure this year (hopefully) and I am looking for a fork rack solution. My only problem is I only have a single mounting boss on the fork arm! Do you know of any solutions to my problem? Thanks

rafting strap (NRS) are better than voile straps. Us whitewater boaters are always amazed at how no one seems to use the amazing rafting straps (cam locks)

The buckled on the NRS straps are big and cumbersome for how I use them.

King Cage, "Manything Cage" titanium comes with two Voile Straps for $66. With an L shape at the bottom attached items can't slip down to fall out of the cage. Plus the cage is designed so the straps go under the cage instead of around the fork. Safe, light, better design.

So do these work with a carbon fork? I have braze-ons, but I'm worried about wrapping the voile strap around the fork.

Not having bosses on my fork would a pair of Topeak Versamounts be robust enough to carry small loads. Id rather not use the larger Gorilla Clips if possible.

Others may have mentioned this, but would a 1L Nalgene work with this? It's under the 3lb weight limit set by the manufactuerer. But I'm curious to know.

Going to take it on single track tmrw. Don’t know why it wouldn’t work if strapped correctly.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  5 лет назад +1

Its definitely not intended for large and heavy loads. But no problem with something like a sleeping pad, tarp or fly rod. Some forks will do better than others. It is not as error proof as a cage for sure, so relies a lot on user judgement.
