Why The Porsche 992 Targa 4 GTS is a 911 Like No Other

  • In today's video I drive the most controversial of 911s - the Targa. A style icon, but also derided by purists for its focus on flamboyance over function, the targa got a makeover for the 991 generation. The 992 carries over the same fundamentals but allied to a 911 which I've struggled to like, can the Targa do any better?

Love your reviews. You remind me of the early days of Top Gear, before they got silly and only drove supercars. You contextualize what it's really like to drive fun cars in a normal situation. Maybe you should get on Top Gear and bring some normalcy back!?

Yup, massively impressed with Jayemm's honesty regarding that shambles of an interior - when do you ever hear journalists having a go at Porsche like that? And fair play for Porsche for still sending him the car (as he'd already shredded the 992 in his original review).

I own a 991.2 Targa 4 GTS and think it's a dream. Your review of the 992 is a bit harsh, but I actually think the 991.2 is a little better. I agree with the criticism of the design of the shifter, and the 991.2 gauges are actually better - more analog in style with better visibility. Another commenter remarked that the exhaust on the 991.2 is better, which i agree with - it seems to crackle a bit more. Furthermore, I think I can appreciate the Targa more since I drive it in Florida weather after moving it from the Northeast where the weather is more like England. But if the weather is a little chilly, I would recommend driving top down with the heated seats on! I wouldn't even consider a Jaguar or Mercedes SL since they are both cabriolets, and not Targas. The Targa is the best of both worlds which is what makes it unique - with the top down, it offers more wind protection than a convertible, and the glass rear window looks nicer with better visibility. They style of the Targa is stunning. The Ferrari you compared it to is a different animal - more expensive, and not exactly a daily driver, which the Targa definitely is (at least in Florida). Keep up the good work with the reviews.

I’m fortunate to have both a 992 Targa GTS and a 992 GT3. My personal take on the Targa is almost the reverse of this review. The power train is not a patch on the GT3, it’s laggy in both engine and gearbox response compared to the GT3. However, the Targa buffeting is no real issue because it only appears at certain speeds, which you aren’t at for very long. I have not found it a problem and much prefer the Targa to the convertible. Pace is good and the 992 interior I prefer to the 991 (I had 3 of those). It’s nicer to look at, feels more modern and although I agree with the old cup holder being great, I don’t have drinks in the car! The 992 cup holder works as a convenient store for coins and nik-naks. The Targa GTS is a great daily but not enough of a sports car compared to say a 997 GTS which I had a few years ago. The Carrera line lost a lot when it went turbo IMO.

    • @Diirk

The cup holder can be replaced with a much better looking key holder. In my 992, this replacement part was in the glove box.

What Review can we expect from someone who never wanted to give a car any chance to prove itself? A man who cares so much about his work that he didn't find the wind deflector himself, gives us false information about the lowering, and whines because of the stiff steering in a sports car. Another example is when you talk about opening the roof. The park distance control is standard on every 992 Targa, it checks the space behind the car before you try to open or close the roof. If there are less than 50 centimeter as space, it will not open. And let me tell you something, you may find it a little bit disturbing, but there is a button with a "P" on it in the center control, and "P" stands for parking, so, if you press it, your will turn on your handbrake. The handbrake button is only there to release the brake, but it releases automatically as soon as you shift into reverse or drive.
I own a 911 Targa 4 GTS and I use it as a daily driver beside my Audi RS Q8 and I really don't understand what you are talking about for 33 minutes. I think you don't understand what the Targa is all about. You can drive it perfectly open on a day with less sun and only 10 degrees plus, just turn the heated seats on. Driving a Targa is like driving an 80's/90's convertible, it is more noisy, it is more windy...it is more pure, so what?

I've had a 991.2 Targa 4S since 2020 which I'm very pleased with. I chose this model rather than the 992 because in my eyes it's a much more cohesive design and has buttons for the important functions rather than a touch screen, also no PPF which wrecks the exhaust sound.
Having watched many videos where the reviewer complains about the wind buffeting it seems they all have one thing in common- driver height! If you are very tall or have a long torso this will put your ears in a position where the deflector won't work properly. You can mitigate this by choosing the 4-way seats which at their lowest setting are a full 5cm lower than the 18-way versions. As for the redundant rear badging, that was the first thing to go.

My God, these modern Porsche cars are Hogs!! With a driver and full tank this thing weighs 4000 pounds !!!??? That's absurd despite whatever tech goodies it has I personally think it's too much electronics..Everything from the pedal to the opening amd closing of the throttle body is controlled via electronic servos and I just can't figure out why they would go away from the simplicity of a steel cable to do such tasks..plus it's not something with potential to short circuit or go bad...too much reliance on electronics..
the massive downside ofodern cars...overengineered, over complicated and overweight like the modern housewives.

I agree that the 992 Targa 4 GTS is on paper one of the nicest and best Porsches to get today. I have always thought the Targa is one of the best looking and most desirable Porsches. However having a 991.1 4S Convertible myself and having just spent a week with a 992 4S Targa, I have changed my mind. The Targa is nice to look at, but the Convertible experience is better, both from a useability and diversity perspective, but most importantly from an open driving experience. I thought the Targa added a lot of wind noise compared to the Convertible. In addition, the 992 4S (and I am sure the GTS) is a very fast car with great acceleration, but I prefer the naturally aspirated sound and driving experience of my 991.1 (4S).

Kids in back seat of Targa suffer vs cab, and gals I know don’t find it open enough. 991 began first time cab up/closed had good attractive lines vs coupe. 997 n 996 cabs are good but top up they are not in same league for beauty as coupe. A slight correction to your video, unlike the Coupe and Cab variants of the 992 GTS, the 992 Targa 4 GTS 'does not' get the reduced ride height i.e. the Sports PASM -10mm, it sits at the regular Targa 4S height, nor does it get the Turbo specification suspension and therefore no helper springs. So essentially, the 992 Targa GTS gets the same suspension setup as the 992 Targa 4S. It's only the Coupe and Cab variants of the 992 GTS that get the -10mm suspension drop, Turbo spec suspension with the helper springs.

@@JayEmmOnCars That's incorrect, on the 992 Carrera model range there's no such thing as -20mm drop, that was only available back in the 991 model range. In the 992 GTS model line up you get the Sports PASM -10mm for Coupe and Cab, 992 Targa 4 GTS doesn't get any drop at all nor helper springs, this is because of the added weight of the Targa body. You can check the Porsche website in the Technical Details section which will clarify. It's a well discussed topic on the Porsche forums too.

@@JayEmmOnCars Unfortunately, it seems they haven’t picked it up. The Autocar article below have got confused as well with the -20mm and -10mm, they mention the Targa 4 GTS doesn’t get Sports PASM though so they are partly right and partly mistaken. As mentioned earlier, go to the official Porsche site and check the Technical Specs where it clarifies under ‘Drive Train and Chassis’ and compare a Targa 4 GTS v Carrera GTS. This should help clarify for you. Anyway, no point going back and forth on this, I pointed out a correction and the reason the Targa 4 GTS doesn’t get the additional suspension system is because of the additional weight it carries because of the Targa chassis. Have a good weekend.

LOL. I have a 992, and those shiny bits of black plastic down the side of the gear lever are greasy fingerprint magnets. Also, I thought it was because I'm a short a**e, that I struggled to see the fuel gauge, I always assume I am at fault, not the car, so that's good to know. The gear ratio seems to be a little more 'motorway boring' friendly than the 991, the 992 does 70Mph at lower revs, so maybe it's an MPG thing? I'm no expert, so just speculating.

Terrific review. Like your points made.
911's. Of the many sporrtscar makers out there Porsche oddly is the only one with a model that has I believe about 23 versions of . All with just minor changes...mostly....just to get more 911's sold. Really only need 2 models of 911. The Carrera S or the Turbo S. THe Carrera S with a convertible model.. I belive there is one. Forget.
The idea of the Targa seems like a good one. Having that "Targa pillar" I think adds to the look. But in use....as you mention ...the roof when closed or open sounds like a pain. Not soemthing you'd want in car you spent so much money on. YOu dont want any rattling noises or wind turbulence inside the car. Which you dont get with the convertible. Not sure if you "hear the roof" on a convertible. But at least there's no turbulence. Plus, with a convertible when the top is down you'd only do so under the right driving conditions e.g. around town...not on the highways. So if you want the open top expereince its still the convertible. Which onestly how often do you really drive top down.? Maybe if you can afford it get a coupe and a covertible?
Turbo S for the GT like drive and the amazing 0-60 in under 3s fun Though I'm guessing that fun will get boring fast. So I guess at the end of the day if you're looking for your first 911....the Carrera S coupe is IT. Gives you engouh of a taste of what a 911 can do and is the more "affordable" of the 23 models. YOu DO want to feel the tail pitching....that's a Porsche 911. :) If you get the Carrera 4s I think you're changing the "Porsche experience".. taking away from... All these options to make a 911 drive less like a "911".
GT3? Cash-grab. Unneeded for street driving. If you're a competitive amateur road racer (on track) you'll buy a used 911 and out fit it for racing. Not a new 911.

Based on Mr J’s dress sense, I take little heed of his views on design or aesthetics (interior and exterior). I absolutely love the interior design of the 992 - it is truly something special. The rwd cars are so much more lively than the 4wds and having tested both, decided to buy a C4S cab. Mr J, has gone full Doug Demouro on this review and that’s one thing no one should ever do. He has it totally wrong on just about everything here.

I totally agree about your comments on the 992. The interior is a mess and totally form over function. I had a 992 cabrio when they first came out - kept it for just under 12 months and traded it in for a 991.2 Targa GTS. It’s the Goldilocks 911 !

I don't understand how car interior designers keep forgetting that a lot of controls need to be intuitive and easy to distinguish without looking at them. I mean, I know they're trying to make it all look as sleek and modern as possible and knobs and buttons don't really fit that design brief but knobs and buttons are the best peripherals for a lot of jobs.

The air cooled Targas had lightweight removable roof panels of fabric over a folding metal frame. The panels were easy to remove or reinstall, and could be folded neatly into a bundle which easily fit behind the front seats. A simple, great design although not suitable for automatic car washes!

Porsches have always been expensive and hyped despite being good or cool .
Porsche was and I think still is the mass produced brand with the most profit margin built In meaning the most overpriced. It's a good buisness plan . Make way less cars for the same amount of profit of other MFGs means the molds and castings don't wear out as fast ( saves $ ) , less cars to warranty ( saves $ ) .
Because porsche creates less 911S then it could sell and charging double makes them special to rich people who don't mind over paying for exclusivity .
Porsches as good as they are are snob mobiles which for people that worship money and fine things that's fine but to me it makes them lame . They came about I conjunction with VW or the peoples car .
Whenever I see a porsche I go and check the tires and I never find wear on the tires that suggest the driver is a driver. They REALLY are dentist and other often nerdy professionals cars who want to be a little sexy without Too GAUDY .
The 911T from 996 on has been a pretty radical CA in regards to straightline acceleration that Americans love while also being a great GT / Sports car as long as it doesn't need repairs .
I drove a 996 Carrera with Tip Tronic . THAT CAR and for the price LITTERALLY SUCKED . Somebody flipped me the keys to it and I KNEW IT WAS THE BASE OF THE 911 but was still excited being my first chance to pilot any 911 . It was just SUPER LAME and should never have had a 911 badge on it or that price tag .
Today they perform excellent in lower trim but even lower trim ends up very expensive . You pay for ALL the performance PLUS MORE .
911S are special because they are expensive and overpriced as a strategy to make them less common so its easier to over charge . You can't refute the buisness strategy but it also means you need to be willing and rich enough to be taken advantage of . Some would say that is all premium products and perhaps , but porsche was / is supposed to be a more sensible near exotic that you are supposed to put miles on unlike a Ferrari ( I am one of the few people who doesn't like Ferrari as a company , the ETHOS set up by Enzo where he saw rich customers as rubes makes me never want to own one no matter how beautiful ) .
It's a shame used porsches are either WAY OVERPRICED or priced OK for older boxters and cayman and some 911s but real car people can't own them because they are one failure away from loosing all their equity of the used price paid for them .
Imagine if boxters could be kept going like a GM car I regards to maintenance and repairs . Shit , everybody would have used and hot rodded boxters and or driven by young people who want in on fun cars. Shame , there's so many for sale but everybody is afraid of them .
I don't believe that it had to be that way and that Germans need to build stuff that is so expensive to fix that it either becomes a classic for very rich people like air cooled 911s or cars with 60-100k for 10-15-20k that no younger or older person who wants a sports car but doesn't want new stays away from like so many euro cars .
Just a shame that they aren't built at like a 50 % of owner friendly like a Toyota so all these older 70K boxters would be sought by people as used cars as a bargain and a way in where you can have fun for 30-40k until your finances might allow you to move up .
The Germans definitely build in planned obsolescence by cost with their products to where they just aren't worth saving unless a special model that appreciates to the prices for Tech Execs , trust funders , and people who have gotten rich by hardwork and skill or selling drugs or being a religous leader or politician or some other less noble profession . Just a shame that there is a fair amount of them that sit around with relatively low miles when people would enjoy driving them experience wise if they weren't a terrible idea even if rich because you just buy a newer one as the price difference isn't that much different then buying a used one that has failures that leaves the car being worth 0$ .
The C8 and Z06 was released in the worst time ever which is also a shame . Maybe not perfect . The Z06 being more perfect and a much more fairly priced car but still gonna end up lower production then one would expect meaning used ones not everywhere at a decent price . C6 Z06s fetch decent money but at least you can service and rebuild them and have a fun car that will work if you don't go too nuts modifying it of which as a street car it doesn't really need it .

I wish they'd make a lightweight version of this car and let the driver have the dignity of removing his/her own Targa-roof. Keep the 20 motors and switches for moving a piece of cloth the size of a welcome mat. Producing a 911 convertible with a small, robotic-armed solarium mounted where the convertible roof would normally have been and raising the center of gravity just isn't cool. It's new-rich garbage. This is the Ferrari California of 911s. The entire purpose of the Targe was to be an open car that would pass safety standards. They do without it. It's become a chav version of the convertible for people who want their 911 sports car to be as heavy as an M3. While I'd gladly admit that the non-GTS version that doesn't have blacked-out everything is very pretty... I despise how lazy this car wants the driver to become. Hiding all this bloat with turbos just makes the entire concept of a 911 seem irrelevant to me.

Not a great review review especially getting so many facts wrong.
No reduced rise height as you indicated, you failed to mention/learn roof won’t open if there’s an obstacle instead you said the car would be damaged if you did open it near another car, and you failed to spot wind deflector which you called the key deal breaker for buffeting - when it wasn’t…
So Porsche gave you more time and you still didn’t establish these facts, and are giving bad advice to folks?
I’m not going to dispute your personal preferences and personal opinions but it’d help if you learnt more before your reviews.

I should be an expert on this car the number - every - review I’ve watched on the mainly Targa 4S top model above the lower powered Targa 4.
Watch Jay Leno’s Garage lockdown, October 2020, review of the 4S in Porsche racing yellow.
You missed out the rear wheel steering and the fact the Targa bar is a roll-over safety feature and makes the car stiffer.
I watched Tiff Needell’s Targa 991 review when this new motorised Targa roof version was released in 2015.
From memory the Targa motor and mechanism adds 150kg over the Carerra 4 and reduces the 100kmph/ 62.4mph by half a second.
I’ve also been looking at Iain Tyrell’s channel today, about the 2.7L Porsche RS from 1973 and the explanation why Porsches until recently, had a reputation for dangerous oversteer, because of the heavy rear mounted boxer engine and the inadequate suspension at the time.
AWD sorted this out and also has to be the greatest safety aid for most average drivers.
The PDK 8 speed double clutch system in this is unbeatable and easy to use.
    It preselects the next gear.
As Jay Leno said: Porsche owners, unlike Ferrari owners:
Put tens of thousands of miles on them and put snow tyres for all year winter use.
The climate in the UK is reasonably mild as we are warmed by the North Atlantic Drift of Carribean water.
I find it hard to believe the heating system can’t keep you warm with the top down.
Apparently, like the other GTS models released with this Targa on the Porsche lineup from this Autumn, around 2 years after the new 992 generation was introduced in Autumn 2019:
GTS variants are very good value for money models, with options for the list price of the GTS, that you couldn’t specify as cheaply by turning a Targa 4 or 4S into a GTS:
A more powerful engine and the brakes and centre licking racing wheels from the 992 Turbo S.
You could specify Porsche Carbon Ceramic brakes, but as these are standard in the Turbo S, and the GTS gets the same brakes, this car should have had them.
The Steve Sutcliffe Targa 4S review is good too: he’s basically a racing driver as well as an experienced motoring journalist from ‘What Car.’
He commented on the wind noise and buffeting, but knew about the pop-up diffuser.
The Steve Sutcliffe review of the GT3 vs Turbo S is good as well from Landau, that Welsh racing track.
The Jay Leno April 2021, 992 911 GT3 review with a Porsche test racing driver called Patrick Long who’s a Porsche Factory racing driver,
    is good too:
Explaining about its naturally aspirated 9000+ RPM engine: the GT2 is the track focused 911 with a Turbo charged engine, but I don’t know what the GR2 RS is.
Both have the extra racing downforces aerodynamics, but with a low drag coefficient for straight line speed, like in Le Mans.
I’d have a Targa 4 GTS; or the Turbo S, which out drags all the much more expensive supercar machinery, over on Car Wow with Matt Watson.

You turn on the heated seats, turn on the heated steering wheel, and also set the heater to both top and bottom vents. And you are as cosy and warm. The top vents heat my hands and the down vents heat my feet - and my back is heated also. And my palms. Also the car rear window won’t open if there is a car or wall behind you.
