I always thought a boxer engine was called that because of the opposing cylinders. That’s why watching Jay is so great. He is the top expert about vehicle history. I never finished one of his videos without learning something. Thanks Mr. Leno!
I had heard the same, but I think Jay has it wrong. I am just conjecturing here, but Porches early engines and Volkswagen's of course were 4 cylinder. If you would look at the top of the pistons in the horizontal plane, you would see two pistons coming out and back in to the cylinder bores, like two gloves. I think thats how the flat engine design got called the boxer. Jay's explanation doesn't make sense because all cranks, as they turn will have the rod journals coming over the top. Anywho, i love the video and Jay anyway.
From Subaru website: "The 'Boxer' engine is so called because the movement of the engine's pistons resemble the movement of a boxer's fists in the horizontal plane." The boxer analogy is most closely resembled by a flat 4, as daimler's, porsche's and volkswagen's early engines. Once you go to a configuration of more pistons, 6, 8, etc. Well, the analogy is not as close, as no boxer that I know of has more than two arms, but I guess the name stuck.

A 911 review by Jay? Yes please! I have to say, his review has been the most casual and relatable out of all of them. No unnecessary stuff. Just the important points. An American POV for sure. Then again, he is Jay Leno.
Jay is gushing about this car with all he has in his garage just imagine what a old regular Joe Schmoe like me from Kalamazoo would say and feel if he could have one ...Dream car
Hey fellow Michigander! I've always gushed over and dreamed about driving a Porsche. I can't use my legs so I have to use hand controls and drive automatics. But if I had that car setup for me I'd probably never get out.
I have to agree on the Targa top, cool styling but a lot of added weight and the simplicity of a slick top roof is more pleasing to the eye. I would run from an automatic too, I love to shift, it is a simple pleasure that is hard to describe.
Agreed all around. But if a Porsche exec knocks on the door and I’m forced to decide between a Targa or a Cabriolet, it’s Targa all day. I do really dig the old SWB air-cooled Targas, but must admit the Coupe is perfect in lines and proper rigidity while the Cab ruins the look of that wünderbar teardrop. And don’t get me started on slant-noses. Blecchh.
Love my 991.2 Targa - trying to teach my kids about the importance of incremental improvement and precision. They will get it some day and I hope they are able to have something similar for themselves.
That is a beautiful piece of German engineering, I’ve always said driving a 911 is like driving a bullet, just point and steer. My ultimate dream car bar none.
He has wife. Lots wives are not into cars. When people pass with his bucks. Lots of hands are out. Especially the attorneys. I wrote same thing recently on motorcycle tour on another RUclips channel. Just be crying shame all his colllection gets broken up. I certainly wish nothing but good health and long life for Jay. Far as new Porsche I am not big fan of looks. Very bloated looking to me. I have not driven one so I do not know how wonderful it is or not. My Porsche I want is 991.2 Turbo or 997.2 S or Turbo.
I'm glad you talked about how the car makes you feel. That's the most important thing! Jay really shows what he was born to do, delivering a great review with no ego. :) Thank you Jay!
Coupé, Rwd, manual, carbon Fibre roof and aero package. Sport suspension w/o rear wheel steering and without active stabilizer. Sport Plus seats with leather/cloth upholstery. Everything to touch in Alcantara (called race tex now). Done. The perfect daily driver. Great video format, rare to find something improved by the pandemic ;).
I had to rematch it, as I missed the 11 th and 12 th time he mentioned it. He is still legues ahead of another you tube revewier, except maybe Harry metcalf IMHO.
I bought a 4S targa back in 2017. I never thought I would buy a 911, however I loved the targa to and the lines on the car. I think it is the best looking 911. The car as Jay said makes you feel very confident as it does everything so well and so easy. Everything is effortless. Not being able to see the engine bothered me at first, however I love hearing the engine wind up right behind me. It is so smooth and wonderful to listen to. I think it is a car I am going to keep for life.
Jay's the best....in so many ways!! Incidentally, Jay, I love the Targa as it offers the best of both worlds and I think the styling is beyond over-the-top! Best regards...
Jay’s the coolest guy ever. I like the look of the targa, but I’d probably go for a RWD manual coupe, if I had 911 $. I love that yellow. It looks gorgeous in the dark blue.
Love Jay Leno’s garage…as innovative and informative as it is. He’s a true car, guy and I matter which car he is evaluating. There’s always something to learn from it!
4 years since this video first appeared and I am just now seeing it. Jay is a unique talent who can really channel the spirit of every car he reviews. Not being able to access the engine is a bummer to me. But I might get it anyway.
Dated a girl in high school whose dad had a red 80s 911. He took me out one day and showed me what an "Italian Tune up" was. I was laughing and frightened at the same time.
Flogging your engine was a regular maintenance tip back in the age of carburetors. With 3-speed transmissions you hold it in 2nd or don't shift into 3rd if it's manual and drive down the highway at 55.
Reminds me of a joke Johnny Carson told years ago on The Tonight Show, and I still remember it. He said McDonald's had started a hamburger delivery service and if you're not home they just slide them under your door. Would have been before the Big Mac and other burgers had came out and all they sold were those small single burgers.
I have to admit that once you get "Porsche" in your blood that's it for life. I bought a 1971 911 T coupe in '72 from a guy for $6,000. Loved the car. But life changes and I had to sell it a few years later. Then I got a '91 Carrera 2 coupe. Both those cars had manual transmissions and I loved the '91 as well. Porsche 911's don't do any one thing the best. But they do everything really well. Finally about 18 months ago I bought a 2015 Carrera Coupe 911S and this will probably be my last car. Finally got a dual clutch automatic (age and Los Angeles traffic made it the smart move). Very quick and fun car to drive. I've always lusted after a Turbo S coupe, but the price is just too daunting (not to mention how much trouble I would probably get in driving it!). Anyway, great video Jay. Thanks for taking one for the team! Ha!
I've owner four 911s during my 70 years of life, each its' own beautiful, time-capsule creation. Granted, they've become an amalgamation of hot-rod and refinement, but always there's the German precision craftsmanship in every detail! Having driven (and owned) everything from VWs to Ferraris (many wonderful machines) there's truly only one "people's race-car" manufacturer - Porsche!
Every time I use the turn indicator in my '68 Camaro I chuckle at that comment of Jay's about breaking chicken bones. I've heard him use that line a few times and it's always funny. Jay, these videos deserve a community service award in these challenging times.
I've come to appreciate AWD in a 911 on dry pavement. Jay mentions in passing that it's really stable, and that's exactly what I like about it. The car really wants to over-rotate due to the weight in the rear, and the AWD makes that a non-issue for a guy who isn't an expert race car driver. The car feels ridiculously planted and safe in a way that no that no previous sports car I've owned has felt.
I factory ordered a 2019 Carrera 2 with only ONE option- the multifunction steering wheel. It came with a 7 speed manual standard. This is the purest version I could get and is like a fine watch. Very light and agile.
I picked up a 2020 Carrera S today under the Porsche Drive program. It’s an awesome car. I have a 996 and this car is another level all together. As Jay says “makes all the right noises.” Tight and poised.
I do put snow tires for winter and summer tires on my Ferrari GTC4LUSSO. I am second owner since 5k miles and presently have 31k miles on it. Its my daily driver. I do enjoy your channel.
Excellent, thanks for posting Jay! It's extremely impressive, love it, love the targa top - however - if it were me, I think I'd prefer a less "fussy" top if that makes sense? I get the whole theater of it but I think I'd be happier with just a standard, one piece, removable top like a standard Corvette. I know that's heresy to say that but there you go.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH I currently own a targa and I've owned it for over 10 years now and it's actually pretty awesome. It weighs about as much as two gallons of milk, it's held in place with three simple and secure latches and it takes (literally) 2 minutes to pop out and stow in the trunk where it snaps easily into place. It doesn't have to be this complicated, uber expensive thing which Porsche has turned it into was my whole point.
He's giving Porsche a lot of love and I get it. As the owner of a 2018 911 Carrera 4 GTS, it puts a big smile on my face everyday. So solid, precise, quick, turns like it's on rails and a ton of fun at the track. Add to that, pretty much bullet proof reliable. It's my daily from March - November living in Wisconsin. I'll drive the wheels off mine..then get another. Cheers Jay!

@@saeedalhefaity Haha! But seriously, there's no denying it. People can prefer other cars or have certain things about Porsches that they don't like, but they're obviously fabulous cars.
A 911 review by Jay? Yes please! I have to say, his review has been the most casual and relatable out of all of them. No unnecessary stuff. Just the important points. An American POV for sure. Then again, he is Jay Leno.
one of my favorite lineages of cars EVER. I love all the Targas.
same
I love the classic hard top 911, but the targa is the look I fell in love with when I was a kid in the 80’s.
Honestly one of my favorite Porsche cars ever made I absolutely love this car along with the speedster
These videos with just Jay are SO much better than the high production one's before the pandemic. A car guy talking about cars. Pure.
One of my favorite car reviews- Jays raw impressions, without all the tech details. Excellent
Yellow definitely works for that car
No car should ever be yellow. Only color worse would be pink.
Said no one.
@@FYMASMD yellow and pink are dope
I wouldn't ever chose that color for myself but I agree, it works.
I agree. I feel like only Porsche and for some reason yellow vipers are perfect yellow cars
Launch control - the smile on Jay's face!!!!
Blecchh.
Agree with you, love the coupe, over the Targa, also would go for a manual
The Targa weighs 242 lbs more. I'd pass on it too. I would take the PDK over the conventional manual however. I'm done with shifting.
@t c - The Targa top is made from 2 magnesium panels with sound deadening materials, all covered in cloth.
I would like the real Targa top.
Love my 991.2 Targa - trying to teach my kids about the importance of incremental improvement and precision. They will get it some day and I hope they are able to have something similar for themselves.
"There is an engine in there! Believe me, I saw the blueprints". You the man Jay!!! I love the Targa top!
There is some limited engine access with the top up. 2 fans, and fluid caps.
I seriously enjoy this format. With Jay,
Tyrrell's Classic Workshop, Harry's Garage/Farm and Itchy Boots the world is a better place. Thanks to all!
I've always LOVED the targa top. My favorite body style of the 911.
That is a beautiful piece of German engineering, I’ve always said driving a 911 is like driving a bullet, just point and steer. My ultimate dream car bar none.
I sure hope that Jay wills his cars to something like a Jay Leno Car Museum, so we all can go see and enjoy them in person.
No time soon one hopes!
@@tomtheeagle1 Agreed!
You can go see them now,I think you have to make a donation
I have the feeling that Jay is setting up that shop to become a museum
He has wife. Lots wives are not into cars. When people pass with his bucks. Lots of hands are out. Especially the attorneys. I wrote same thing recently on motorcycle tour on another RUclips channel. Just be crying shame all his colllection gets broken up. I certainly wish nothing but good health and long life for Jay. Far as new Porsche I am not big fan of looks. Very bloated looking to me. I have not driven one so I do not know how wonderful it is or not. My Porsche I want is 991.2 Turbo or 997.2 S or Turbo.
As a Porsche owner, Jay’s comparison to a high end shotgun is spot on. One word: precision.
I'm glad you talked about how the car makes you feel. That's the most important thing! Jay really shows what he was born to do, delivering a great review with no ego. :) Thank you Jay!
Like when he says all the fun is between 40 and 110 mph. Yep.
"if you have children who can sit in a teacup, they'd be very comfortable back here.." Ha ha!! LOVE these videos, Jay!
I debated solo for a moment on whether he said “teacup” or “D-cup”! Figured Jay would opt for “teacup”.
Porsche only makes back seats so they can laugh at Doug DeMuro trying to fit back there. And insurance purposes of course, but hey, whatever
So, drive Chihuahuas around in a Porsche?
Beautiful car and another outstanding video .
Always enjoy Jay’s take on every car and his presentation is as the norm first class and one of a kind .
hahahah
Love the Targa. Will b ordering as soon as the 2021’s r available. Chalk with slate blue interior and blue top
Can you loan me $4,200?
Jay’s left leg is over there twitching for a clutch pedal.
When he said if you’ve never driven a Porsche, you’re missing out. Truer words have never been spoken. I don’t think I could own anything else!
Did anyone notice that Jay liked the “continuous improvement” that Porsche do with each model?
I had to rematch it, as I missed the 11 th and 12 th time he mentioned it. He is still legues ahead of another you tube revewier, except maybe Harry metcalf IMHO.
Leave him alone ha
lol
I bought a 4S targa back in 2017. I never thought I would buy a 911, however I loved the targa to and the lines on the car. I think it is the best looking 911. The car as Jay said makes you feel very confident as it does everything so well and so easy. Everything is effortless. Not being able to see the engine bothered me at first, however I love hearing the engine wind up right behind me. It is so smooth and wonderful to listen to. I think it is a car I am going to keep for life.
I'm with you, Jay--I don't know anyone who puts snow tires on their Enzo or Lamborghini, either!
Lmao. People do but yeah I don't personally know any of them either. 😂
hahahah
I was fortunate in business when i was in my 30's and bought an 86 Targa. I drove the car all year round while living in Toronto....loved it!
Jay's the best....in so many ways!! Incidentally, Jay, I love the Targa as it offers the best of both worlds and I think the styling is beyond over-the-top! Best regards...
Underwhelming specs, overwhelming performance. Porsches are amazing. Thanks for the video Jay.
Mark my words jay... I will own a Porsche
Best of luck to you in getting one, ace. I have the same dream/goal. Cheers.
Jay’s the coolest guy ever. I like the look of the targa, but I’d probably go for a RWD manual coupe, if I had 911 $. I love that yellow. It looks gorgeous in the dark blue.
Coupe, rwd, manual - perfect.
Yep, my car
Indeed
Convertible, rwd, manual - my choice
RWD, manual transmission, heavy steering, super stiff suspension, no traction control, that's a sports car.
RWD, manual transmission, heavy steering, super stiff suspension, no traction control, that's a sports car.
Love Jay Leno’s garage…as innovative and informative as it is. He’s a true car, guy and I matter which car he is evaluating. There’s always something to learn from it!
“You could be going three times the speed; which of course would be wrong...”
Joel Henderson like when all car people say they were going 55
welcome to Mexico
hahahahahah!
Why were you laughing if you were scared? Pick one and go with it...
Nice!
@@mikeb3172 ever heard of a nervous laugh?
@@mikeb3172 ,yes Mike, whatever you say.
Great review. I prefer just having Leno solo doing the show, very authentic and really captured the essense of what makes the Porsche so special.
"Couldn't get a McDonalds single patty hamburger through there." lol!
fast food is Americans' frame of reference, unit for anything.
@@zartosht06 It certainly is for the knucklehead infesting the White House.
This could either be taken as compliment to Porsche and a dig at McDonald’s or conversely a compliment to McDonald’s and a dig at Porsche.
@@Flies2FLL Biden sucks, but both of them are dumb
Ha!
I've only driven a 911 once years ago, and I too got the feeling that the care was all made out of one solid block of metal. Amazing.
Had the pleasure of driving my ex's brother in laws 911. Turbo...what an experience
Thanks Dr. Carreras
Perfect description of ANY 911!
Doug and Jay with car videos at just about the same time. Cool.
They both car nutts.
@@johnbrown2163 I just noticed something else: They're both about brand new cars, 2021 MY.
@@countenanceblog I wish they review my Jeep and fix it.. HAHA
Every time I use the turn indicator in my '68 Camaro I chuckle at that comment of Jay's about breaking chicken bones. I've heard him use that line a few times and it's always funny. Jay, these videos deserve a community service award in these challenging times.
Well done Jay!!! You didn't mention the F1!!! 😄😄😄
This has been my all-time favorite Porsche model. I’ve wanted a Targa since I was about 14. At 62, if Covid doesn’t get me, I’ll have one.
4:41...hope Jay makes a video on the Citroen 2CV convertible on the back close to the FIAT.
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions made a song about that car.
Have you been living under a rock? he already has.
Jay being a successful comedian pays for his passion. I love it.
Wow, that's a very complex top, for something that you could just remove and put in the trunk by hand.
Where's the dramatic theater in that??
remember that when it rains and you have to pull over off the freeway to go collect your trunk top
Like Jay said it's a very German top lol
Well, get a Speedster for that, they have a roof that you need to take by hand, they make a Porsche for every need :D
Yep
I picked up a 2020 Carrera S today under the Porsche Drive program. It’s an awesome car. I have a 996 and this car is another level all together. As Jay says “makes all the right noises.” Tight and poised.
I'm not a fan of the cabriolets. The Targa, on the other hand, what a beauty 😍
it's a Targa
@@outsidethepyramid You stopped reading at the first sentence...
Targa, without doubt one of the best looking Porsche's and cars ever made. Absolute art. Love it.
Jeremy Clarkson said it best when it comes to fitting children in the backseat of a Porsche.
"It can fit two kids, without legs." lol
Thanks so much Jay for continuing your stuff during these times. Means a lot to us.
Congrats on 3 miliion Jay!!!
If you want open air motoring, buy a convertible or a motorbike. I've had a couple targa top cars and they're a PITA to deal with.
Cheers Jay!
"There is no substitute."
The new Targa is the most beautiful 911 ever made. Great video Mr. Leno
This was a german Porsche, not an american. The green "Umwelt" decal on windshield is mandatory in Germany...
Simply said, Leno and a Targa; Two classics.
Just look at all the panel gaps! Crazy precision! Tesla, look and learn 🙊
Go look at the panel gaps on a 356 Porsche and get back to me. Porsche has been building their cars since 1948, they've had 72 years to perfect the process. The Model S from Tesla has been out for 8 years.
