It’s SPLASH Day, Baby! | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 103

- This is our third time launching the boat after spending time on the hard. We’ve figured out the routine, for the most part, and each time has been easier than the last. But with so many moving parts, literally and figuratively, it seems like there’s always a new surprise or challenge.
During our first haul out, we rebuilt our feathering prop and put it back together with the wrong pitch, leaving us without any propulsion, in forward or reverse. The second year we scrambled to reinstall our 300 lb. centerboard at 6AM, and this year it was managing to do everything while caring for our baby during covid.
It all went fairly smoothly, and we even decided to throw in a few last-minute projects! We got a crispy new mainsail from Precision Sails which required a bit more rigging work to install than we anticipated. Kirk also tackled a plumbing project - one of his least favorite duties - to fix a leak in our freshwater system that had been causing us grief for years.
As with most things sailing related, even ordinary tasks can quickly require extra-ordinary effort, but as long as you’ve got the right attitude, it’s this extra bit of excitement in the daily routine that makes sailing such an enjoyable lifestyle.
Much love,
Lauren, Kirk & Renata

You two have one beautiful baby, looks like you both but has mommas eyes, God's blessed you both.
1:30 What an insanely brilliant idea to use popcorn as a packaging material!!!!
this is by no means a new idea companies have been using it for many years
We've been using Fuel Right exclusively for a year now, after having a dirty fuel tank disaster. It is fantastic, and has served us beautifully. An amazing product!
Great episode guys. We've got two kids and have a pretty active life.
When kids, particularly babies, are involved every task is huge thing to fit in.
Great channel. Pretty much the only one I watch now.
Thanks Chris! Sounds like you know the feeling. :)
Ohh, wow. hadn't watched for over a year. SOOOO many changes, baby, property and new oil pump, woo hoo and congratulations.
Welcome back!
That was such a wonderful and fun episode, I completely smiled through it the entire time. Thanks! "You three are the greatest...."
Who needs to sail when you can have so much fun, staying berthed....I was just saying, stay safe..
Must say: Few there are who can so colorfully & entertainingly give post plumbing project commentary. Great stuff.
Keep on "Wham Bamming Kirk" You'll surely need a bigger boat very soon!
Glad to see you guys back at it again and a future deck hand in tow.
You guys always put a smile on my face
Great to see the boat in the water again.
Love the popcorn idea! Brilliant.
The baby is such a dear. My gosh though Lauren, she looks like you. Wow!!
You kids such fun to watch! That precious little Reatta keeps you both So happy too.
Awww she is adorable! ♥️ I had tears watching her laugh. Thanks for sharing;
Wham bam thank you mama...lol 😆. Experience!!!
Awww! You guys are just so laid back and cool...great to see you!
oh wow! What a video. Thanks for sharing, fair winds!
Renata was looking at the camera just like she automatically knew how she suppose to look in the camera. Beautiful baby❤️❤️
Haha, we think she saw her reflection in the lens early on. We also often have the viewfinder flipped around so she can see herself there too. She probably doesn't recognize herself, but sees a baby, it's been fascinating to see her reaction to a mirror too!
@@SailingSoulianis well she is absolutely beautiful and so glad to see you back. Have a wonderful time with your new crew mate.
It's called WISDOM.
You guys are so laid back, on camera any way! That makes for a chilled baby. Happy sailing
Love you guys! You are certainly on the right path! ♥️✌🏼⛵️

Thumbs up to Fuelright for using environmentally friendly packing. Some great ideas are so simple.
Hey you do it right because you do it twice!! Me and plumbing usually more than twice!! so good on you.
You two are hilarious, thank you for continuing to share your story!
Agree 100%... punch lines like "Zip Bam thank you mam" are what keeps me smiling
So proud y’all. Living the dream.
Thanks Adam!
Renata is looking more and more like her mother. Safe sailing for all three of you.
Glad to see you guys back on the water.
Thanks Brian! It was a special day.
I've been following you for quite time now, and after seeing all the work you've done and keep doing my dream of sailing around the world just came to an abrupt stop. No way I'm bying a boat, too much work. I'm definitly going to rent or go as crew. I'ts very interesting to see all that you've done and are still doing...amazing.
It's called learning! Yeah!!
Steve Orr and Priscilla Payne SV Dazy
Thank you for sharing your story. We
love it. Hope catch up in Cvx. next summer.
Warmest regards
G’day guys, lovely to catch up with you again, splash day is always exciting. Those few last jobs went well,Renata has a new environment to adapt to,and your sailing experience is being changed up a notch.Best wishes always 🙂
Thanks Wayne!
Welcome back, it’s been awhile. I’m the very best at doing the same job multiple times but hey no one is perfect!! Renata must be close to 1 by now!
This was an amazing video!!! Keep up the amazing work you two, and I can’t wait for the next video to be uploaded!!! You two are killing it and by the way damn good choice on the cereal lmao!!! Timestamp 9:45, good ole Cinnamon Toast Crunch is my favorite of all time!!!
You guys really pounded out that video. LOL. I was crying with laughter over my coffee. We raised four girls and feel your pain. Getting anything done is a challenge.
🤣
As Doug from SV Seeker says “ we do it right cause we do it twice” 😂
Good video guys. I think I was smiling all the way through. Y'all have me thinking of getting a longboard, because of your video a while back. Only problem is that I just turned 64 and could never ride my younger brother's regular skateboard. I never put an effort into it either back then, many moons ago. I've had visions of my lab pulling me around and I think that would be pretty cool. She's going to have to heal from her surgery next week, torn acl. Love your videos and you're right about the electrical/plumbing jobs. ❤⛵👶
Needed the laugh. U guys are great.
And it is a good think to have Every one with fuel tank need this VERY GOOD
Beautiful little girl
awesome!
I noticed you was having some issues with the black slime that grows in diesel fuel. At a business I formally worked at before retiring I purchased a fuel polisher system that ran off 12vdc and it worked very well. It was small but could handle a lot of fuel very quickly. The unit was made by Algae-x and I would highly recommend their products. The replacement filters are a little expensive compared to an automotive oil filter but if something works well a few extra pennies is well worth it. The Algae-x unit can be mounted permanently connected to the fuel tank so you can turn it on from time to time and polish your fuel any time you feel the need to keep your fuel in tip top condition.
I wanted to add that I've been a diesel mechanic most of my life and can pass along a few helpful tips. Clean fuel is very important to a diesel engine, or any engine as far as that goes, but dirty fuel or fuel with moisture can really damage a diesel engine. I would highly recommend purchasing a tube of water detection paste to test your fuel tank with especially after refueling and having a fuel polishing system on board.
Dad bods are the bomb
experience ! so true . After 3 boats I'm getting there hahahaha
Happy to have sub'd to your channel like a year ago. Awesome to see you splash back on the waters. Missed your cool conversations
Thank you Thorsten, glad to hear you're enjoying our work!
Hey you guys . Fellow J&R resident. I’m heading down now. Where is that path? Should I ask Randy ? Oh, yes, love the tool roll. You know the play that goes on between you is what makes your relationship and why we love your channel.
Do you really need a reason…good to see y’all 😁
With the baby and her sea sickness to be honest I thought you guys would go aground. I am glad your still at it. God speed
It's about time! :D
Cinnamon toast crunch... yum
1st..your new mate will challenge you for captain position.
2nd..you 3 are adorable and I love your adventures.
Lastly..much love & respect to you all. May your journey have fair winds and seas in your favor.
Awesome! That's all I can say!
Doing it twice teaches the full process, the right and wrong way to do things! The popcorn shipping is becoming quite popular here in Canada, but I’m still Leary about eating it! Safe travels!
HELLO!!! The manufacturer tells you NOT to eat the popcorn. Obviously you can't read.
@@jamesford8315 obviously
Renata looks sooo like her mom!
Yes! lets go!!
Every time I see people carrying their baby in that front strap I think of the movie Total Recall when Arnold meets the mutant. As far as your fuel tank, try pulling off the very bottom a quart or two. Also there is gunk stuck to the sides of the tank so polishing will be in your future for a time. I ended up removing our tank and pressure washing it clean.
Love your little girl!I hope you aren’t eating that processed trash. Ie, CaptAin Crunch.
Another vlog! Popcorn at the ready!
Hope you enjoy!
@@SailingSoulianis how much does your marina charge on the dry while you get the boat ready during storage? And costs of putting it in the water and costs there on the water?
I always herd it was bad luck to have bananas on a boat. Maybe that’s why you don’t ever catch any fish😁
Your darling daughter looks like her Mom. Lucky her
Quite the “experienced” pipe layer ✌️
Haha the innuendo in these comments is hilarious.
I started following you when Kirk was long boarding back in San Diego....what a long strange trip its been
Indeed!
Yay
I hope you find the boat like Project Atticus did….The boat manufacturer is in North Carolina where they are now….installing a new bow railing that holds two large solar panels and their communication gear. I forgot the name of it….like New England but not that…..has a birth by the stairs and shower…40’ which is 12 meter….if you go big….I hope you can find a 48’. They paid $205,000 and had some strange fixes to do which did not cost much…almost like somebody played pranks on the previous owner.
just watched Ep 88 again. Love your videos. Unfortunately, tightening the backstay does not lean the mast aft without lengthening the forestay. it compresses the mast and causes mast bend forward. Remember mainsail flatening
. Mast rake has to be set up when stepping the mast. The center of the mast may also be pulled forward using a baby stay.
Racers have high ratio adjustable backstays. More bend is put in the top of the mast. The top of the mast bends aft and down following the arc of the forestay. It does depower the main. Like a mini reaf.
In big wind racing, tighten backstay upwind, release down wind.
@@artsmith103 On a masthead rig the masthead can not move fore and aft without lengthening the forestay, which is not done. With more backstay pressure, the rig tries to compress, bending the mast forward in middle sections, flattening the main. Therefore, the mast does not "rake" foreward and aft.
@@michaelmerrithew4042 That's what I said. If the mid section bends forward, the top bends aft and down. Main is flattened, depowering like a mini reaf.
@@michaelmerrithew4042 And our comments haven't even addressed that there can be some sag in the forestay before tightening the backstay allowing even more aft movement of the mast head.
we miss you
Kirk, use ptfe thread sealer then wrap the high quality thread tape around the threaded fitting three times. You will never have a leak this way. Cheers big daddy!
Wrap the tape clockwise
@@samcarrs Looking at the open end.
As Doug of SV Seeker is fond of saying, "We do it right because we do it twice!".
I like that saying. May have to adopt it!
Experience is what we call our mistakes, so we can recognize them in the future...
That's an awesome way to phrase it!
👍👍👍
Kirk looks like Sam from Sam Holmes Sailing
I missed something, last episode I saw you were buying land and now you are floating.. sorry if im not keeping up..either way, kiddo is cute as heck...
🤙
It's a crazy life we live! Though you might have missed a few episodes in between (check out our YT page 😉)
Yet another Sailing channel featuring a sail boat flying a Baby on Board flag. Congratulations!
I never thought about it before....but putting cooper coat on a center board must be a really difficult thing to do. I guess this is why you just used normal bottom paint.
@Least the path is the straight & narrow
