  • Huge life changes are on the horizon! We’ve known for a while that our Tartan 37 won’t be our “forever” boat. With a baby on the way, she’s getting a little small; but we’re also ready to start approaching sailing in a whole new way. Knowing this however, doesn’t make the mind shift any easier. We know that right now we want to continue sailing, but contemplating our future selves as parents, we wonder: Will we want to continue to sail once we have a baby? What if, as parents, we think the prospect is absolutely crazy?
    Top this uncertainty with the emotion and stress of hauling out to prepare for another hurricane season - with no specific plan to return to the boat - and it all becomes overwhelming.
    Join us as we tackle our last few last boat projects and contemplate our future plans as sailors and as parents.
    Much love,
    Lauren & Kirk

    Gah! You guys! I love yas (and don't even know yas)!!! Yet another great episode! You just have a knack (either in the edit or in the shooting or in the pre-production, OR BOTH or ALL!) for building such heart warming and REAL stories. It is so nice to watch and KNOW that this MUST be the real Lauren & Kirk.
    You are great people.
    You both are absolutely wonderful to watch/listen to for such a plethora of knowledge and entertainment...
    You are doing REALLY great things and inspiring us all;
    Soooooo many hugs and best wishes to you both in this next..... BABY PHASE! Wheeeeeeee!

    I remember when my wife gave birth to our fist child Noelle. We spent the following months contemplating the impact it would have on our plans to sail to Bimini. In the end we decided to do what was best for our daughter. 10 years later our boat is decorated with letters Noelle has written us from her orphanage in Xinjiang Province. She looks happy & even has a job assembling "hand-held computers."

    19:55 20 years ago I used to meet with older people as a financial advisor. I remember meeting a guy and his wife at their house. They lived in a subdivision. He was a builder and had built the houses in that subdivision. He was in his early 60s and I remember him saying "young people live their life trying to make things more exciting until you just want to live your life making things more simple"

    I just completed watching ALL of your videos and I really enjoyed the journey you both took me on. So far what did i like the most, well I liked how well you both are together. Its important to me that you both seemed very well ballanced and seemingly never tried to "One Up" or Poke at one another when things got tough. I also liked the realization that we all make mistakes and its ok. I think more people need to understand this. I was also glad to see you two finally on your last Sail in your videos realize that (At least I think) Sailing and pushing yourself to destinations, we got to do it all see it all is not fun. Sit back and relax. I also see no real issue raizing children at sea or traveling, I just think "What that Quote from Jaws". Also "BRING IN DE EGGS!"

All the best. PS:myself a GL sailor having lived on the shores of Gitchee and now Erie there’s lots of great sailing ahead for you.

    You guys are great! Congratulations! I just found your channel a few days ago. Our first baby got to spend several nights on the boat. When we found out we were having our second we decided not to launch the following season. My wife was not ok with having a toddler and a baby on the boat to tend to while one of us had to single hand on the unforgiving Lake Erie. I remember motoring to the yard thinking that it might be the last time I am on this boat. That was three years ago. We finally got the boat back in the water this season and my daughter's love it! We are out every weekend and they want to start going farther. Too bad the season is coming to a close. I'm on the hunt now for a larger boat as the kids have taken over the v-berth, and we end up sleeping at the dinette. We have a Bristol 24 right now. You will figure it out, and whatever you decide you will be happy. I couldn't imagine my life without my kids. Seeing things through their eyes is precious. Fair winds to you on your new adventure.

    And now, more seriously: As to "older" and "melancholy." I'm old but not melancholy. And for kicks I sit around in my sun room office chair rocker and watch amazing Sailing Soulianis episodes. Such fine productions knock the melancholy out of being old. You two put little kicks back in my life. Thank you!

    Having a family, and children, is heaven. You still get to love all the things... There is just a priority shift. Making the boat and sailing a central part of your family recreation and togetherness might be just the thing. Cooperation, delayed gratification, calmness of spirit, and learning that life isn't just about me... these lessons come naturally on a boat, as does the opportunity to discuss the important things in life. You two are a blessing. Love.

    You guys will be great parents no matter what you decide. My two cents, if you want to continue sailing, now or later, try to be unplugged from everything when your child is around 10-12. That’s when things start getting tough and peer pressure enters the game. Good luck whatever you decide. It’s been fun. Thanks 🙏 🙏 🙏

    OK, this isn’t going to be a popular comment. I LOVE watching you two. Charming, bright, you work well together and make it interesting to watch how you figure things out and have fun. BUT, I don’t think you’re cut out to be blue water sailors. When you add the little one into the mix, it will make it worse yet. BUT, let me suggest this. Find a kind of “adventure” that really suits your gifts. And pursue that with the same gusto and transparency as you have sailing. You’ll be truly GREAT and probably have an even better time doing it! The very best part of your journey so far, to my mind, was the cruise down the Mississippi! For some odd reason I can see you in a suitable trawler-speed boat exploring the boundary waters. Stay safe, enjoy the little one.

    • @artsmith103
      @artsmith103 2 года назад

      They talk about a Cat often, personally I think they should stay with slightly bigger mono. Maybe 42'. Aft suite will change everything plus a little more room for upgraded mechanicals and energy equipment plus dinghy davits and bigger arch.
      Then I think they could enjoy years of costal cruising the entire east coast.
      Get the deepest keel that won't be a problem in the ICW and Chesapeake. Maybe 40' is a better solution.

    • @artsmith103
      @artsmith103 2 года назад

      2nd comment. Their Tartan 37 is in the quarter berth class which is ~34-37'. I think among the best in that style. Next class is 39-42' aft suite. After that comes multiple head + dual suite in say 42-46'.
      If the expanding family isn't blue water, I think a bigger mono ~40-42' would be a great coastal cruiser.

    My wife and I literally raised our kids on board the boat. We only cruised to our local islands and not around the world, but regardless it was totally worth the added work of having little kids on the boat. By the time they reached high school they were island kids. They knew how to fish, operate the dinghy, sail the boat, free-dive, swim like champions and cook meals on board. It was added work, but it was TOTALLY worth it. It made them the great young adults they are now.

We're in our 70's and you guys are an inspiration and give us hope for the future. We'll be traveling in our motorhome as soon as I can figure out how to mount the rocking chairs.

    Such a wonderful episode, as always so happy for you three!
    My two daughters, I bought them up from toddlers til present living and traveling the warm seasons on our motor yacht, it's the most memorable experience of our lives, simply a second home for us, we wouldn't know how to live without water beneath us, I'm sure you three will enjoy the same wonderful experiences.
    Thanks and keep the episodes coming....

    A minute 19.56 you described our life. I'm a great bird watcher and love that little nap in the afternoon. But at 71 years old in the last few years my wife and I have traveled the country and watched birds and wildlife in Africa as well. We can feel the aches of our age but have loved our 49 years together and love our four children and one granddaughter. Life continually changes. Also we live in West Michigan and you know that's a great place to be! Good luck on your next phase!

    Every day is a new beginning with the opportunity for new adventures. I’m 76 and have spent over a year on a sailboat, leaving Michigan to the Keys and Bahamas and returning to Michigan. Every year since 1997, when we returned has been an adventure, living in Texas and becoming part of the Western culture, and now living in Mississippi where we originally began. Even now as we have grown slower and more appreciative of life, I spite of Covid, every day is still an adventure not knowing what comes next. Just look in the rear view mirror and be thankful for that ability to reminisce and for the blessings of life. Good luck for your new, unknown adventures because you only go through life once.

    You guys do really excellent canvas work! I used to use sunbrella but years ago I found a product called top gun. It wears out your equipment, and your hands, but it lasts 10X longer than sunbrella. Just a suggestion:)

    I’ve been following you guys from the beginning and I hope you continue sailing and not going back to the same ole same ole. Your kid will be a happier human for it. Oh well I just saw that this video is over a year old and you are probably doing what you’re going to be doing.

    Talk about your attention to detail, covering your bright work, I commend you both. It is the same attention you paid to a proper hull painting 2 yrs ago. All the best to the three of you. I can’t Waite till you return with your second mate. God Bless!

    Hello from Ontario Canada, don’t call it the end, it’s simply a wind shift in the journey of life. While I hope you come back and sail, whatever you decide is right for you three is what is important. Please take us along on your future journey :-)
    And if you decide that the end has come for the channel…. Thanks for allowing us to enjoy the ride!
    Best of luck to you

    Love that sailrite double sided tape as well as the machine. I love mine and just entered their photo contest. I had sewn a full winter cover down to the waterline on our C&C 37 which is almost the same boat as the Tartan. Love watchcing your video's. The C&C had an aluminum toe rail... so no need for a cover. :-)

      It was quite the wake up call for us! We left our “home” dock for good and realized for the first time we were on our own and had to figure out everything on our own too!
