We didn’t know it then - sailing into the sunset across the Gulf of Mexico - but this would be our last journey aboard our beloved Tartan 37.
For a long time we’ve known there’d be a “next” boat. But what exactly would it be? When would the time be right? We wanted to try sailing for a season with Renata on Soulianis I, and we’re glad we did, because it confirmed our feelings: the time has come for a new boat, a new style of sailing, and new destinations!
Hope you enjoy!
Much love,
Lauren, Kirk & Renata

I got rid of my last boat about 2 years ago, and in my mind I can still feel how that boat feels, reacts, and sounds. Whether at anchor or underway, you focus so many of your senses on the feedback that the boat gives you, that it becomes ingrained in your memory forever. So in a way, that boat will always be with you. Trust me.
Oh darn, we were hoping you weren’t going the multi-hull route, like every other channel. You two, now three, are so accomplished, intelligent, soulful, and really have done a wonderful job sharing the joys and pitfalls of sailing. While I know people love their multi-hulls, I never really equate them with sailing. But I’m sure you can live more comfortably, luxuriously. I guess it’s rebranding your channel. Thank you for the wonderful videos of the past several years. Congratulations on your many successes.
Sailingboats over sailing catamarans and sailing trimarans for sure. I never liked the look of the other two sailing vessels, let alone the way they move in the water. Though I suppose a sailing trimaran is more like a sailingboat but with training "wheels".
"You can be happy and want things, at the same time" ☺ I like that.
“You can want things and still be happy…”. I absolutely loved this. Best to you three. 🍻
A dear friend and shipmate got sick several years ago. I had just started following Soulianis and suggested it to him. We had spent time at the Zukey Lake Tavern in Michigan and he was delighted to see that mentioned in the videos. He watched and enjoyed every episode until his death in December 2020.
Sorry to hear of your loss Carl. But thank you for sharing ❤️
Beautiful, all the best for what's to come x
You poured your heart & soul into Soulianis, turning a good sailboat into a fantastic sailboat! Rest assured that a piece of "her" will always belong to you guys! I look forward to seeing your new sailboat and can't wait to follow you on your new adventures! Take care, would love to meet up with you guys someday.
What a great video. Thank you for taking us all along for the close of one chapter … and the foreshadowing of the next! Can’t wait to see what the future holds. Best of luck. ❤️⛵️
thanks for the wonderful journey ! all the best in what ever path you three decide to take!
Great video, best wishes and excited to see your future sailing adventures
Please keep making videos. Please.
Loyal follower since the beginning.
We plan to! Thanks for coming along on the journey with us 💚
I love sailing with you guys! Looking forward to what's next! BAMMMM!
An amazing sail, Soulianis has served you well. Changes coming, looking forward to what is ahead, but take time to look back on all you have done. Happy for you guys!
Adorable you’all are. Good luck kids!
Love this channel. Look forward to your next adventure as Im sure many of us are. Best of luck
Looking forward to the new boat! And how you guys handle it! Be safe!
Wonderful couple, beautiful child and loving family. All anyone can ask for! Thoroughly enjoyed your journeys.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for all and good luck from Germany
I hope that you will find the perfect boat for all three of you. It is a wonderful life, and I wish at my age I could still enjoy the ocean.
I've truly enjoyed your adventures on this boat from beginning to end............however new adventures ahead....."Hey
stay Safe Out There"
I always enjoy your adventures. You must take care of your family first. Where ever you go and however you get there, we will be here and enjoy what ever you share. Good luck in the future and look forward to seeing your family adventures.
Wow, so beautiful, that sound of the water would send me right off to sleep lol. Oh, poor Renata and poor Lauren. Some fantastic views. Ooh that clearance was close, heart in mouth time. Whatever you guys decide to do, I'll watch. Love your vlogs. :)
May your adventures be as bright as the love you give Renata and going forward your time spent doing what you love, and wherever you go and whatever type of yacht you get, take auto with you as he clearly knows this was his last trip with you. 😁🙃🤣
Like most of the other commentaries I too have been watching from very early on. Great channel. I always enjoy watching. Good luck on the next adventure.
I agree, that "bow wave" sound is music to one's ears! I will never tire from that sound!
Great to see you🙂
Let’s see what happens next 🤔
Best wishes always🙂
Great episode, sad about Ole boat, but exciting about future one, thanks for the wonderful adventures and hopefully more to come...
While on land, read Transitions by William Bridges. We continually make transitions til our demise. I am semi-retired and enjoy your transitions. Great to see the grandparents enjoying their time with you guys. Always continue to cherish these experiences.
It’s really tough when your love ones cannot enjoy beautiful sailing days I can only hope that you guys find a way to overcome the seasickness.
If another vessel can help with this you really need to go all out and find a way to get it. I know it’s easy to say but with determination you will get it done all the best
Beautiful baby, beautiful boat, beautiful life. Your'e headed in the right direction. Enjoy your videos.
As the episodes started to get less frequent I was thinking this could happen, my best wishes, hope to see you pop up again in the not to distant future. You have don many things that I, and probably many others have only dreamed of achieving.
Thanks for sharing the last sail for the season I guess...and I like when you said sailing won't be out of your lives for ever.. We'll miss you all and you glorious winged vessel.... If you hear of any 150 to 200 ish classic rigged schooner or what boat(?) sailing or repositioning from the east Atlantic to the Caribbean .. NYC..Boston or Penobscot Bay up in Maine where I live I'd love to hear any ideas too.. Moms side related to Miles Standish 2nd aunt twice removed or something Grandpa told us and my dad's dad come over from England on !Cunard liner to Ellis Island to start the Child Dynasty (so.far maybe 10 blood line with my first grandson on the way greeting the New Year in 2023...can't wait!! 😊 Your little girl 👧 used to be as small and lovely as yours with eyes so curious and a smile to turn the worse day I'm having into one of the best.. I don't get seasick though I haven't been on may days long cruises and your "watch" intrigues me. I might want to bring one along in my seasick possible aid bag.
Sailing shenanigans is my favorite show!!
As always, great video. Sounds like some exciting times ahead. looking forward to following your little family's adventure.
Cheers, thanks for following along!
Praying for the perfect boat for you guys to continue your amazing sailing journey! 💕
They already have one, but you have to pay to see.
BTW I still go back and watch all your journeys from the beginnings, can't wait to start my own next spring, hopefully following your same paths starting from Huntington, WV on the Ohio river....
Sniff sniff 😪😪 I am rally sad 😢it was always very nice to see you two and now with the little girl even better. 😪👍🌺🌺🌺💞💞💞
Been following you guys since Racine....when we realized we were there at the same time on our PB. Life is an adventure and the only constant in the Universe...is change!!!
Very impressed with Renate, a quick BARF and everything is good again. No complaints let them Truckers Roll
I've followed your travels since the beginning, and I love your episodes.
Next season, pease try to put out more than just 1 per month.
Oh, and never change the goodbye music. For some reason, it really makes me look forward to the next episode.
Have a nice summer. D⚓️K
Ditto. More videos.
My wife and I will miss you guys until you are back. We have been watching you both ever since you began your boat shopping videos. Somehow we don't think you will be gone long. We remember you initially started out looking for a catamaran. Hope to see you back soon.
Just thanks!
Change is difficult. Linda and I sold our blue 41' Colvin Ketch 'Tranquilo" last year and bought a 2010 Gemini 105MC. We are at Safe Cove and will be back there this October for our second winter on her. Love her but Tranquilo was ours for over 20 years. Letting go is difficult but life always moves forward, never backwards. Good luck and sail-on.
Rob and Linda
If I remember right you're coming back to MI for the season, Welcome Back! Sad to hear your selling your boat but I look forward to the next one.
What an *adorable baby* 😍
You guys do a fantastic job, love your episodes, you guys will look good on the new cat!!!!
Bitter sweet but your on your way, the two of you and the wee-one . Catch you next time and so looking forward to it .
Angus
Such a tease. Can’t wait to see your cat in the future.
I love your boat. Dream boat for me!
Gosh, we love your channel. Nothing feels quite like a soulianis episode. We really hope you three continue to upload content. It makes no difference to us if it’s on a boat, in a rocking chair, in a van, or a house in the woods. As long as it works for you guys, we will watch.
My wife and I agree with this wholeheartedly! ❤️
Ditto!!💗⛵️
As a subsriber from the very beginning
Watching you grow as a show
And as people has been very satisfying
You put a smile on me
And for that thank you
Denny from Minnesota
So glad to have you along on the journey, Denny!
cool videos guy's...luv u guy's..stay blessed 🌞.
I have been watching boat videos by David Walters Yachts and thought about you three. Best wishes on the search for your new sailing home.
Oh hope things will work out for you!
Good luck new sailboat hunting.
You are beautiful and good people and you have a nice and good time. Keep going!
Cool. Nice video. Brought back memories of the one longer sail trip I took with some new friends up in the PNW, Puget Sound and San Juan Islands. 7 days on a 50 foot ketch. Wooden double-ender. Beautiful boat. Orcas island. Lopez Island. San Juan island with Friday Harbor. The bow-wave shots got me thinking about those days heeling over in a 50-foot boat full of 10 novices and a captain. Just moving moving moving at the behest of the wind.
My darlin' and I would love to live there... for the maritime culture, and the North Cascades. Climbing and boating. What could be better? But alas... the home prices....
Interested to see what kind of catamaran you bought, and what Renatta is like at 5 years old! lol.
Sad for us. It was a very special journey from the beginning.
Best of luck on your next boat kids......OnWard.......
Good perspective at 14:20, Kirk. The little things help you appreciate the big things. (edit to add: thanks for the LOL at 26:35!)
I really enjoy your editing, thanks. Sounds like a cat's in the future, looking forward to the process. Take care
Thank you!
Standing on a rock pile at 7400ft deep in National Forest with 1 bar of reception. What a great surprise!!
Do not worry about attaching the strop from kite tack around headsail, whoever invented those things must think that chafe and the potential of wrecking then furler was a good idea! It’s been great watching you guys evolve your skills.
Thank you
You guys are great. Also I think I know what your next boat type will be and thats sounds great, I hope it is sooner than later. Please take us on your journey, Film baby Film.
Sea Sickness: Well what i can say is I served 20 years in the US Navy mostly Aircraft Carriers, but a Friggate and some Guided missile Crusers as well. I was never sea sick, but after my first long term at sea I got Land Sick for about a day i think it had to do with being dehydrated. So what do i suggest;
You have to prepare at a minimum of 12 hours before going out on the water. Hydrate and Food meaning multiple small meals and get rest. When you start on the water stay moving if possible. I remember snacking on Cheese and Crackers on the day of departure. Visually try not to focus on one moving point for too long, scan the horrizon from the centerline of the boat to either the Port or Stbd of the vessel. For some people they use pressure points to distract the brain from incountering equalibrium sickness and the one pressure point I heard works for this is the webbing between your thumb and index finger. Press on one hand and with the other "Pinch" by pressing your first thumb knuckle (The line right below your thumb finger print) and press hard enough using yhe same hand index finger 2nd knuckle (Thumb line and the side of your index finger should line up) and press and hold for a min or two. For me this works for headachs as well. When i press this location as i described it tells the brain to focus on your thumb webbing and not pressure that is building up. It is a distraction to put it simply. I think this may as well help with feeling sea sick. I think the problem with the wrist bands is that it is not constant pressure to trick the brain.
Well i cant wait to see your next boat. Take us with you as you figure it out.
The sheets of a spinnaker are called the guy and the sheet. The guy is to windward and the sheet to the lee as for a jib. The spinnaker pole is traditionally set on the guy, ie opposite side of the bat to what you are doing. Try it, when set well is is generally in line with the boom but on the opposite side.
Love your RUclips and missing sailing massively.
But they rig the tack as an asymmetrical, i.e. no pole.
You should try out a multi-hull before dumping the mono-hull. For a lot of people, the unpredictable shifting of a multi-hull is worse for motion sickness than the simpler motion of the wave tracking experienced with a mono-hull. One should also not discount the impact that significant physical and hormonal changes from pregnancy can have on susceptibility to motion sickness. If a condo on the water is what you're after and you don't care about added dockage, hauling, and maintenance costs, the multi-hull may be a better choice. But if you're after more "stability" and a more relaxed sailing experience in rapidly changing wind conditions, a multi-hull is probably not the best choice. People talk all the time about multi-hull speed but most of the multi-hull boats I've encountered while sailing in the "real world" are poking along and reefed way down in 20+ knot winds while the larger monohulls I see are ripping along and letting it all hang out with a near full complement of sail. One of the biggest misconceptions about multi-hulls is their apparent "stability" advantage. In reality, they are really stable up to the point when they aren't - and when that threshold is crossed, you typically find yourself in "really, really bad day" territory very quickly.
Monohaul for me. Part of their problem is they filled the quarter berth with storage and don't have an aft place for Lauren and baby to rest. The smallest ~40' with aft cabin might have solved their problem but then sky draft would have hit the bridges.
You need a boat with good sea berths, pilot berths, quarter berths/aft cabins(s). The motion on catamarans is different, and not necessarily better than a well designed longish monohull. Soulianis has been a great boat for you, and you have cared for and greatly improved her. A lucky new owner awaits her.
26:48 not sure if that is a house under construction or something else.
Catamaran best way to go with the baby/child. Bigger more room, plus what i like/loved about you guys you werr in no hurry, just enjoying life and the time together. Cant wait to see what you decide. Best wishes!
New 'style' of sailing means 100% catamaran.
Change is good 👍🏼
Hi you guys , never left a message but great last video for season, my eyes started watering when u said the boat isn't yours anymore, God bless the sea sick girls and brand new 2million dollar cat, kidding but can't wait
Thanks for watching, George!
Sorry to see you get out of it .
The bane of my existence, Seasickness....... WHY!!!!! Sometimes I'm so bad I can't function. Scarry on a boat. Why can't they find a way to stop it.. Anyway you are a wonderful family and I love catching up on your vids. All the best.
I’ve used that relief band as well and it works great in my experience!
What is the name of it?
The product is called “relief band”. And they have a lot of options.
Renata Lynn is the youngest of the wave children on the channels I watch. Please keep sailing; I love to see the kids grow into boat life. OOh, you're going to buy a CAT! Look at DAZCAT in the SW UK. If you think that growing up is easy, look at 24:10 - 24:52! This is a human working! (Hope this doesn't sound weird - young animals are fascinating) Whatever you do next, may you be well, may you be happy, may good fortune follow you!
great ,all theb est~ =)
John D Macdonald and Travis Magee “Flash of Green” This takes me back to Casey Key and a truly great man I was privileged to know, Mead Bachelor.
..... had my hopes peaked when you, Lauren were talking about the successes with the wrist thingy ... so trying when your bundle of joy is having a rough go of it and you can not communicate ... laughing .. soon Renata will be like a babbling brook, that is probably now and you are hearing all sorts of stories ... do we get a reveal next month ... new chapter starting, I always wonder if the family is now 4 .. smilin .. thx for sharing .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Man... Peter my hopes were up too. Fingers crossed a multihull will help! We're still a family of 3, but planning for 4 at some point ;) In the next month / two we'll be jumping waaaay ahead close to real time, and doing a big reveal! All the best to you, -L
@@SailingSoulianis .....Yes Lauren, have heard that the motion on multi hulls is quite different. So you will have a galley with a view now and maybe a bit more work space. Good to hear there will be a fourth at some point in the future. looking forward to the reveal ... thx for your reply Lauren .... make it an exceptional week ... sorry I missed your reply before this ....
OMG, My previous comment was written before this episode ended. I hope you find your way, going to miss you until then.
For a while there, I thought Granpa had fallen overboard until he made a reappearance as the bow running lights!
Lol
I've found the best way to keep from being sick is to do the driving. At least for me, it applies to both boats and aircraft. As soon as some leave the controls they get sick, but werent at all sick when busy doing the driving. Try it!!
I've tried everything -- steering, eyes on horizon, ear plug in one ear, avoiding looking at screens, avoiding looking down, dramamine, bonine, seabands, relief band, even yelling into the abyss (seriously!), etc. -- and they all work to varying degrees, some of the time. But sometimes, conditions are so bad, even practicing all the tricks doesn't keep it at bay. Then it's rough.
Well hopefully you’ll be back sooner than later.
So sad to hear Soulianis is no more. Taking her name off the transom had to be hard for you. You guys put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears getting her ship-shape but if she is not the right boat for the family then it is time to move on. I look forward to being along with you on your journey to find a catamaran to help in the sea sickness department.
Boats are usually sold with name left on.
like it!
please don't leave!!!
@2:06 😉
Thanks for the honest straightforward titles to your posts. So much BS as click bate titles proliferate. May this transition serve you well! Your daughter is adorable.
Lauren, Kirk and Renata, Can I buy Soulianis?
I have been looking to buy a Tarten 37 in good shape for awhile now.
I have loved your channel since the beginning...you guys are the best!
I live near DC and have been sailing for over 50 years and I can buy your boat immediately.
It must be so hard giving up your great boat and home.
Thanks!
Their boat is already sold and prolly was sold a very long time ago. They are way behind on their videos.
Have you tried candied ginger chunks for seasickness? They're ok for the little one too.
I've enjoyed this channel from the 1st installment to this most recent one. I know time will tell, but I hope your decision to sell Soulianis will allow other maritime doors to open for you in the very near future. I'm guessing the next sailing related video you put up will have you introducing us to your new catamaran?
In the interim, keep the videos coming, even if they don't involve water or boats.
Thank you! Happy to hear you appreciate the vids with or without sailing ;)
I am looking for a live aboard sailboat in South Florida. I doubt I can afford a boat as well equipped as yours, but it is worth putting a toe in the water! Purchasing a boat that is relatively up to date might be more cost effective than trying to DIY to (blue water) seaworthy.
Keep me in the loop?
I do not think I have ever (in my youth) gone beneath a bridge when tensions were not high - except the time I went under the Bear Cut bridge sideways, boinging the mast off each underside strut. That time I guess I just gave up and endured it.
Oh, it was asll a tease, then! I take back my offer ;-)
Seems like the cool couple always has a Tartan. You may want to consider that..
😆
... are you going to "the Dark Side" ??? Boat Speed ... Boat Speed ... Boat Speed !!! Multi-Huller here !!!
Yessireee
I’ve followed your Chanel for years and truly love your productions.
Question: I noticed your boat has a state registration. Is it also documented? I’m wondering because we’re planning a trip to the Bahamas and our boat has only a state registration (not documented). Have you had any issues entering the Bahamas with only a state registration? Do you know of disadvantages wit only a state registration?
We look forward to your future advent… sail on
SV Fascination
Lyme, CT
When we went over in 2019, only state registration was required. We had no issues, and aren't aware of any disadvantages. We checked in at West End, and the process was very smooth and easy.
Hi, I get seasick in the bath so I fully sympathise.
Hahaha!
Right after talking about seasickness you say now were going to throw up the spinnaker.
Wishing you all the Best for the future in which ever boat you get next. Great Video 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Don’t say “throwing up” when talking about the spinnaker or anything else. 😂😂😂😂
You sounded disappointed about the sailing aspect when you sailed the catamaran in the last? video. Most catamarans whisper to you when they are unhappy with what you are doing. You will learn when the boat is sailing well and how it tells you when it is happy. It doesn't hit you over the head like a monohull with the heeling. But it can still be challenging and fun.
As Spock once said, "You may find that having is not as pleasing as wanting. It isn't logical but it is often true."
Quick question, does your spinnaker not project to windward using the pole? That would stop it collapsing behind the main and give you more speed.
