Running from a Hurricane, Ending up in a Tornado | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 83

  • It’s tempting to think we’re cursed. After our boat was struck by lighting, we thought Mother Nature might go easy on us for a while. No such luck.
After leaving the boat on the hard in Florida, we drove up to the Midwest to put some miles between us and the hurricane season threatening the Atlantic seaboard. We prepared Soulianis as best we could, but as Hurricane Dorian began obliterating the northern Bahamas and with Florida appearing to be next, we couldn’t help but think we’d be forced to say goodbye to our boat.
A month later, while visiting family in Wisconsin, a tornado drew a path of destruction right through Lauren’s sister’s property, toppling trees and tearing the roof off of her neighbor’s garage and smashing it into her front yard - all while we hid under basement stairs.
What a strange series of events… Are we cursed? Does Mother Nature have it out for us? Come along for the crazy ride.

I think what makes these sailing channels so enjoyable is the sharing of everyday life. No acting, or pretense but just two wonderful people sharing their perspective. I began my sailing with a love for boats and being on the water as a boy. Now retired I just closed on my Perry 41. I figure I have a little over a month of work to bring her up to speed as she needs a new sail drive seal. New standing rigging and bottom paint. Cheers

We know it's been some time ago but glad all were safe and not much damage, well Chip had his glasses broken. Glad you were there to help family. A "safety sally" message for Lauren and anyone ese who does this, KEEP YOUR FEET OFF THE DASH !!! A front end impact that triggers the air bags will "drive" your feet/legs up and where the top of the windshield meets the roof will separate them from the rest of you.

Wow. Very moving. Glad you and your beautiful vessel are well.
I just bought a Tartan 37. After seeing how lovingly you have refitted yours I would like to offer you the opportunity to refit mine. I will provide as much beer and coffee as you need. My boat is on the Great Lakes so you can work on your boat in the winter and mine in the summer. My wife would happily watch the baby while you work. Yes... I’m kidding (except the part about buying a Tartan 37 on the Great Lakes.) Love your videos. So smart to chase your dreams while you are young. Never stop doing so!

I got off the cruise ship in Ft.Lauderdale where i used to work and went home for holiday in Yalova, Turkey and had an major earthquake after a week seeing my family with 7.3 scale lasted 45 seconds and nearly was losing my entire family. it taught me that you can not excape from mother nature. So i can definetly understand the fear even if it was 5-10 second. Hope your sister & her husband doing well. By the way that fan is looking greatly done by master kirk😂😜👍

This one brought back memories for me. Starting about 7:05, when you showed the pieces of leaves/vegetation splattered on the side of the house, our house was covered on all 4 sides like that after the tornado. Similar situation though, as we lost 3 trees, some damage where one hit the house, but basically came out fine. Glad to see it was just the neighbors garage. I got nervous during storms for over a year after that, now I am back to normal, just respect for the power of Nature.

Lightening strike, near hurricane miss, hit by tornado, yet you carried on. I dream of sailing/van adventures but imagine all the things that could go wrong and so I don’t take even the first step out the door. This episode is a lesson for me, that the worst things can happen and yet adventurers carry on. Thanks for displaying such vulnerability and courage.

Wow!! raw and real. Hate that you went through that, but the truth and reality were truly captured. Glad you are all safe, and all are on a path to recovery. I spent a lifetime in OEM/911 response, and lived through MANY major hurricanes. All of those incidence and 911 calls we can see coming, prepare while enroute, arrive with multiple crews, plenty of foresight, etc. VERY different than having it hit with 6 seconds to spare. Glad you are all safe!!!

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  3 года назад

We spent a lot of time afterwards talking about the differences between a tornado and a hurricane. Similar effects but very different experiences. You can’t prepare for a tornado. They are super random but over relatively quickly. It’s pure adrenaline the entire time. Like running for your life, a hurricane is more like a marathon that you can spend some time prepping for but lasts way longer! not sure which is better 🤷‍♂️

When I was a kid a tornado destroyed every house on the street behind us. Standing in our front yard you wouldn't have know anything happened. Tornados are unpredictable and terrifying beasts. A tornado once even carried a young girl from her farm in Kansas to a strange bewildering land with fantastical creatures.

Lost 7 trees, had to have a new roof, all new fence, totaled one car and a bunch of other damage. Wife and pup were home, I was on the way home. Thankfully no one was hurt at our place or anywhere else in the neighbor hood. Took over 6 months for us to repair all the damage and just about a year for the neighborhood to recover. Yeah, if your ears pop, that means a tornado is basically on top of you. Their radius area of low pressure is quite small, so you definitely got hit as opposed to experiencing the high straight line winds that can occur near a tornado. Glad to see the boat dodged Dorian. You had us worried there for a bit in your narration.

That tornado damage looks bad. I hope neighbors and family were all ok. Lightning strikes not-withstanding--the hit y'all took was SCARY and occurs way too often for my comfort zone--St Augustine seems to be better bet than most coastal Florida towns with regards to hurricanes. We haven't had a direct hit on St Augustine in around a century. They seem to sideswipe our town...maybe due to the temperature influences of the Gulf Stream (?). In the 20 years I've been here, the hurricanes have produced lots of unfortunate flooding and winds but no major devastation (as opposed to Miami, or my hometown of Pensacola for example). Knock on wood (knuckle-rapping my head).

The tornado suction on the ground pulls the surface ground apart, allowing debris to fall, get slammed into momentary fissures which then close instantly as the storm screams on... The forces of nature are totally random and can be equated to a madly dealt deck of cards... Here' s to you guys keep up the good and be safe.

I don't know if you guy's should go buy a lotto ticket or hide under a bed, but the odds of being struck by lighting and hit by a tornado in a lifetime, let alone the same year must be astronomical.

Being a boat owner for 12 years I fully understand what you guys have been thru. The saddest day was the day we sold her. College for the Kids were more important. Maybe someday I'll get another boat.

I was woken up by a tornado at dawn on Christmas Eve morning many years ago. It sounded like a train. It was 1/4 mile from my house. There was insulation in the trees in my backyard but it wasn't from my house
