  • Let me show you how to sync your iPhone photos to iCloud storage in this beginners Apple tutorial.
If your phone is running out of space, an option is to sync your photos and videos to your iCloud account. When you do this, it saves the full-resolution versions to iCloud and keeps a smaller proxy version on your device. If you need the full version for any reason, it will automatically pull that from iCloud in the background.
A couple of quick things: first, you’ll need enough space on your iCloud storage account, and we'll look at where to find that. Also, this is an all-or-nothing feature. Some people were asking how to sync certain images and videos, but when you use sync to iCloud, it’s going to sync everything. So with that out of the way, let’s look at how to turn this on.
To get started, find and open the Settings app. Inside, tap on your name at the very top to get to your Apple ID settings. Once here, scroll down a little and choose iCloud.
Here at the top, you’ll see how much iCloud storage you have. Make sure you have enough space. If you don’t, you’ll need to upgrade your cloud storage by choosing "Manage Account Storage" and then selecting "Change Storage Plan." Here you can upgrade to a higher level to get more space.
Once you’re good, head back to the main iCloud settings page, and then inside the "Apps Using iCloud" section, choose Photos. Here’s where you’ll be able to turn on the iCloud Photos feature. First, at the top, make sure "Sync this iPhone" is turned on.
Next, under that, you’ll see how much storage you’ve used and how many photos and videos you have synced. Under this, you have your storage options. You probably want to have this set to "Optimize iPhone Storage." When this is enabled, full-resolution versions are saved to iCloud, and low-resolution proxies are saved to your device, kind of like a thumbnail. If you ever need to share an image, it will automatically pull the full-resolution version in the background for you. If you’d rather always have the highest quality version on your device, you could change this to "Download and Keep Originals," but it will use up your device storage quickly.
At the bottom, you also have the option to sync shared libraries if you use those. Make your choices inside here, and you’re all set.
And that’s how you sync your iPhone photos and videos to your iCloud account.
