As much as I dislike Hitchens I do get the argument. As an addict I think the worst thing you can do is act as if it’s something you can’t control and that you are powerless to change your life choices.
I’ve not overcome my own Alcohol addiction. I do what I can to keep it in check however I accept my actions are my own and I know the harm I’m causing myself.

Matthew Perry (RIP) held the same opinion as several people I know, some family, some friends, who have suffered from various forms of addiction regarding Peter Hitchens' question.
"How do people stop being addicts?"
The answer I was given was that they don't stop being addicts.
That's why they can't have the thing they are addicted to or they will do it until it harms them (Drinking = Passing out, Drugs = OD, gambling = losing the house etc...) or they get (and accept) the help they desperately need.
Even if it is just enough help to get through today...
Sadly, Peter has no class, charm, or charisma that his brother was famous for.

Peter Hitchens was correct. You are standing on the edge of a cliff. You have a choice; step back or jump.
You decide to jump, then say it was not your fault that you were injured.
People have to grow up and face reality. Maintaining an infantile attitude is a guarantee of failure.

@@ClarkyGuitar Classic non-sequitur. Choosing to take drugs before you become addicted is the choice you make. Everything that happens from that point on is predicated on that choice. If you are stupid then you take the drugs. If you are able to predict the likely results you do not take the drugs. The choice is yours; you are responsible.

    • @ClarkyGuitar
      @ClarkyGuitar 23 дня назад +1

@@spikefunakoshi5667 That's a blinkered view. You don't understand the many, many reasons why people take drugs in the first place. You can't know all of the reasons every person who took drugs took them, and it certainly isn't stupidity that starts them all on the path of drugs.

    • @spikefunakoshi5667

@@ClarkyGuitar Another non-sequitur. I have zero interest in why someone decides to take drugs. That is their problem not mine. I am not a social worker or a professional bleeding heart. The simple fact is that they do decide to take drugs, and whatever happens from that point is their responsibility. They have been warned and informed numerous times about the predictable effects of drugs, and still they go ahead.
Hence my analogy about standing at the edge of a cliff. You decide to jump; when common sense tells you that being injured is guaranteed; that is a stupid act. An intelligent person would not jump. QED.

Here’s an idea that I’m just gonna throw out there: maybe show a clip of the people doing what you’re saying they did rather than just saying what they did extensively and not actually showing what they did. Watchmojo does this with everything. I’m guessing you either don’t have copyright rights or are self important or both. If you’re going to make commentary videos you really need to show what it is you’re commentating on otherwise it’s just you commentating on something with a limited context. Nothing you’ve shown in this video suggests any of the people involved are controversial because you’ve shown nothing to suggest they are

Having seen the interview in full sometime ago, I can see both sides Where Perry (RIP) clearly felt hurt and Hitchens, whose opinions on geo politics and the state of the UK I seem to be agreeing with more(unlike his late brother who a became a supporter of America's Iraq war and foreign policy) on in the last decade or so, was unempthetic and unfair here. Cold and don't blame Matthew for getting annoyed.
At the same time, as someone who never watched Friends and from the clips I saw it didn't appeal to me and thought the humour was lame, It was refrehsing to see someone not recgonise or overly indulge an American celebrity. Perry was upset at Peter's remarks and lack of empathy (understandable) but I also think he's so used to being supported and overly indulged because of his fame from Friends that when one person didn't do this and didn't know who he was, Perry seemed a bit miffed and offended. Something of a self absorbed American celebrity, which does tire me and they automatically expect the whole world to agree with them(who says McCarthyism doesn't exist among liberals too). He also got annoyed when his provocative criticism and name calling towards Peter had no effect on him and he didn't even react. Perry isn't used to someone not kissing his arse.
At the same time I know of people with addiction issues and have an addictive personality myself. Was sad to hear of his passing.
I've downloaded Perry's movie on Ted Kennedy and hoping to watch it soon.

@@avadayofffoyster where does it it say you have to do anything with an opinion, to be taken seriously. Theories are created all the time but aren't always acted on. Also, if you think about it, they are doing something. They're choosing not to vote to make a point.
