    Why was the exchange a "bad" exchange. Alistair challenged the two women to ask probing questions of their guests. The reason so much of Britain was duped into Brexit was because the media did NOT ask guests the probing questions.

    The female guest was allowed to talk for a long time without interuption, but as soon as Alastair spoke she interupted aggressively. He was right to reprimand Victoria as she never told the woman to shut up and let him speak.

      I agree that Phillips is certainly not a reasonable person. It's just a pity that Alastair didn't know who she was in advance. I believe he could have easily tied her in knots with a more controlled response...and reckon that this would have allowed Victoria D to drill down deeper in her dialogue with Phillips.

    I think you should have quoted Emily Maitlis from her News Agents podcast. She admitted that on Newsnight, presenters and producers showed contrasting Brexit views rather than one side vs. correct analysis. I.e. Pro and Anti Brexit generalists, rather than Brexiteers debating experts on customs documentation, trade agreements etc.

    Its big of Alastair to apologise to Derbyshire for his tone, though he wasn't wrong. The Brexit clown had a real hint of Nadine Dories about her and nobody can ever have any
    sort of reasonable argument with that type. They are far too used to people nodding along to them in the media, while a river of diarrhoea spews forth from their
    mouths. Good for you Alastair.

As for Victoria Derbyshire, she was the face of the BBC in front of you, and like I used to say to reps who were getting a b.ll.king, "it's not you, it's the company, but you're the one standing in front of me".

      I can fully appreciate why people don't agree with it and fully endorse their democratic right to do so, but no I don't see it as the UK's biggest act of self harm since Suez.
      Lots of other, far greater contenders for that dubious accolade including the Iraq War (in which that tosser Campbell was a key figure), our bonkers Covid response (which that other tosser Stewart was a key figure in) and the more recent completely unnecessary, avoidable war in Ukraine.
      None of which, I strongly suspect, you would agree with.

    The podcast with pictures. Nice. I, like Alistair, feel so fed up with the BS and occasionally find myself disagreeing disagreeably from my armchair. Mostly, I feel the pushing back on Newsnight was justified....and perhaps has been needed for a while.

      @@mogznwaz I think its OK for anyone to push back on anyone who is pretending that their drivel and lies is an accurate representation of anyone eleses point of view. In some cases it is actually impossible to debate anybody because of the stream of disinformation and straightforward BS. The reason is they believe what they are saying to the point of irrationality. Sometimes its better just let them dig their own hole and say nothing. But I'm not Alistair. And as for the bbc, I thought you were also right to call the bbc out ,iit just so happened to be VD, but she will get over herself.     The newsnight bit was no where near as bad as people made out. The lady in question was terribly ignorant and arrogant. Playing the "He's a woman hater" card the next day, shows she knew she had overreacted and needed something to justify her own behaviour. It's about time the Brexiters were told to stop lying.

    Unfortunately Campbell's record on the truth is at best patchy and I've got to an age now where I can easily spot a person who bends reality to suit them. Campbell is such a man and the way to deal with these people is not to engage, as all you will do is be lost in the mess of his delusions.

    I would have loved AC to have asked her what she actually did as an MEP - why was she there? She could do nothing as a "lawmaker" to aid the UK to leave the EU and she could not morally or practically participate in representing her constituents or her country in the making of EU laws (which was the role of the job!) that she did not intend to support or implement - but she took taxpayers money whatever. Antagonistic to bona fide MEPs from 27 other countries and shameful behaviour on the last day, I doubt she learnt much at all. A pretender at politics.

    I disagreed profoundly with Blair's (and therefore Campbell's stance on Iraq) but let's remember that the majority of the H of C and particularly the Conservatives supported him. However, I am getting fed up with commenters, especially on this channel, either disparaging anything that Alistair says, or even worse, ignoring it completely just to bring his association with that issue up again. For Christ's sake change the record. Either that or don't bother listening to him, presupposing you are listening in the first place.

      I too think Alistair should have walked out, and kept on walking - and walking, not stopping, just walking and doing us all a favor. He is so desperate to be right having been one of the main protagonists trying to subvert a democratically made decision. For the simple minded, most Brexiteers knew that in the short term our financial status would be adversely impacted, however our sovereignty and the freedoms of not being encumbered by the stifling bureaucracy of the EU will be worth it. Of course the lefty loonies will do everything in their pathetic power to impede any progress - and prove to us all that in fact they were right. Guess what - you weren't!

    Its so quintessentially English to focus on “how” Mr Campbell called out a lying Brexiteer and a complacent television host instead of focusing on the heart of the message: Brexit was a big fat con operation and the media failed to do their duty, which is calling out lies. By the way, what is considered “rude” on the BBC would’ve been a perfectly standard debating style on Dutch TV. The Dutch don’t sugarcoat it: if you’re a lying conman they’ll call you a lying conman on live TV. Because that’s what you are, and that’s all there is to it. 😊

Poor old Victoria's face was priceless, but I did notice she was much less amenable to Nigel Farage a couple of days later.     I love how Rory says "chucking the Iraq war at you", in such a nonchalant, everyday way .... Farage may have been the architect of Brexit ... and disastrous as it may or may not be ... it's not as disastrous as the Iraq war was ... of which Campbell was one of the architects ....
