Nat: Wonka's coin falling down the drain is an easter egg to the original Willy Wonka movie. It's the coin that Charlie finds in the sewer drain that allows him to buy the chocolate in which he finds the golden ticket.
And even though it’s not likely and not confirmed, I’ve head-canon that the lady that Willy gives some money to for her and her newborn baby to help find a place to sleep is Mrs. Bucket, Charlie’s mom.
This movie was easily one of the biggest surprise i've ever had in the theater. I couldnt believe how warm and happy this made me feel and even emotional at the end of it. Paul King should always be trusted I guess.
Surprised me as well. Captured some of the magic that film has lost for me. I found myself grinning like an idiot through most of the screening. A very pleasant surprise and was really happy I saw it in theaters.
I was SO pleased to be wrong about this movie. This being a musical prequel to that is unapologetically a love letter to the original just hits so right.
My dad’s favorite movie is the original Willy Wonka. He saw it in theaters when he 9, and he loved this movie as well. He a notoriously hard person to please, and it was nice to see him have such a nice time with this
There's a mix of both the Wilder and Depp version within Chalamet's performance for Wonka and he balances it really well. I was surprised by how much I liked it, and even more pleasantly surprised that it was a musical! I think characters like Mrs. Scrubbit and Bleacher, and Prodnose from the Chocolate Cartel felt like they could've existed in Roald Dahl's writings. Very great reaction as always!
One of my biggest fears going into it was that they were just going to focus on the movie and veer away from the weird, campy, Roald Dahlness. I feel like they balanced it well
Yes, Timothée Chalamet was the perfect choice for this role since he does have a expressive face that demonstrates his optimism and wonder that he adds to the world. Plus, his whole attire as Willy Wonka captures that perfectly since he looks great while doing it.
Mrs. Scrubbit is actually based on a short story of Roald Dahl’s; “The Landlady”, and I personally head canon her and Mr. bleacher’s designs are based off The Twits The Chocolate Cartel is not just inspired by the names of the characters, Slugworth, Fickleguber and Prodnose, from the books and the movies, but their inspiration and personalities also were taken from Farmers Boggus, Bunce and Bean from Fantastic Mr. Fox. Abigail the Giraffe may be an inspiration to the Giraffe from the Dahl book; The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me.
As soon as I saw the makers of this, also made Paddington, another really kind hearted film, I knew the movie was in good hands. Lots of small but popular Brit actors that were great
Timothée has a TON of amazing film work, you should watch Beautiful Boy, The King, Bones and All, Little Women, The French Dispatch, Don’t Look Up, he also is in Lady Bird and Interstellar. Obviously, Call Me by Your Name is an amazing film and shot him into the limelight, a suggestion when watching that TISSUES. Anyways, hope you are well :)
My main positive with this movie is that it brought back that child-like feeling that Hollywood is heavily lacking today. It's also pretty dark for a kids movie as the story of Wonka usually is. The implied murders and money laundering, the cartel having actually killed prior competition, and then the end of the cartel more than likely dying at the end. I also get the sense that while Wonka is very naive and joyful in this movie, the world he lives in will slowly turn him into the man Gene and Johnny's Wonka showed until Charlie comes. Great movie, absolutely loved it.
I didn't expect Nat to not immediately know about the brilliance of Matt Lucas, Rowan Atkinson & especially Olivia Coleman. They played their roles to perfection.
Little Women is another movie where Timothee does a truly phenomenal job acting. If it's not in the running for you to react to, it definitely should be! :)
Nat saying "it's like he's dealing drugs" and then "I hope they're paying for that" when the new ship opened and people were eating the flowers and such, just makes sense. Everyone knows the first taste is free.
As a 50 something who was a blond haired boy who shared a name with a certain character and felt a bit of an outcast growing up, the original Gene Wilder movie was something I conected with. I went into this skeptical but hopeful. Came out with such a smile. It captured a lot of the magic the Johnny Depp version lost sight of. Even being a new fan fiction type story, it had the feel of a Roald Dahl inspired adaption. It did it's job as feel good movie.
Nice reaction, Natalie. What I love about this movie is that throughout the film, even in his darkest hour, Wonka had never given up the dream that he had ever since he tasted his mother’s chocolate. Like her, he wanted to share this gift to the world and he did just that by giving the people a preview of his products and in time, it grew into the factory that we know and love. He made his chocolate special by adding some twists and turns by also using ingredients that he acquired throughout his travels. In the end, he has become a true philanthropist that even Slugworth and his partners in crime couldn’t tolerate the fact the he was selling his product in a very reasonable price since in the real world, items that are made with high-quality materials are sold expensively. For those who have a sweet tooth, I don’t blame them because anything laced with sugar is very hard to overcome, which is why we must watch ourselves, from time to time. 😉
Basically every supporting actor/actress in this film that you didn't already know about has a background in British sitcoms or stage comedy. As a Brit, it was surreal seeing so many of them in such a big film!
Like its predecessor, a movie for children of all ages. Delightful performance by Timothy Chalamat. Didn't expect to see Carson the butler (James Carter) from Downton Abbey.
@@aaronthesaxman660 I'm a fan of Horrible Histories but I spotted Allison so I wrote "Ghosts"...unless the actress that plays Allison was in Horrible Histories too and I never realized it.

Wholeheartedly agree with your take on actors in musicals, and yes Keegan is funny and surprisingly musical in the theater production heavy tv musical series "Schmigadoon" if you haven't already seen it.👍🏾 Great reaction to Wonka!!!👏🏾
When I saw the name Timotheé Chalamet (yes, he's that good, imo), I knew I had to watch it, and was very pleased to watch something that was classical yet newer. I love the magical, dreamy, quirky and somewhat illogical vibe of the film. It's totally a movie for dreamers which the movie makers didn't have to try to forcefully make feel it that way. And the music is as fun and whimsical as any musicals can be. The entire cast did an absolutely excellent job, it's like Timothee was working WITH them and not them working FOR him. The balance was balancing. So glad that you finally watched it (and loved it) too. This is one of the few movies that I truly enjoyed watching from last year.
Chalamet is in The King, and I think you will find some interesting elements in it. And of course in the modern Little Women, and it’s definitely worth a watch, it does a very very clever change that is a meta commentary on the publishing of the original book and author’s experience with the publisher.
Fun fact chocolate doesn't get stale if its kept well, and the reason it was so good was probably because, like most chocolate back then, it was loaded with heroine
For some reason, Hollywood really wants to make musicals without advertising the films as musicals and this is one of those films. I saw it in theaters with my mother, uncle, aunt, and cousin and had a good time. People had concerns about whether Timothee Chalamet would be more like Gene Wilder or more like Johnny Depp, but he really was his own Wonka.
Great reaction, great movie. A box office hit, too, so i think we can expect a sequel, maybe another adaptation of the original book or a jump straight to the glass elevator.
This movie was an unexpected delight. Also if you want to see Timothée Chalamet's acting chops then I highly recommend you watch Call Me by Your Name. It's a lovely summer romance movie and it's shot beautifully.
I saw this in theaters with my niece and was pleasantly surprised, as the trailers had me thinking I would hate it, for reasons I can no longer recall. (I think my initial thought was the movie was WAY more twee than Roald Dahl ever was.) And, to be fair, there were probably moments here and there that Dahl would have perhaps hated, and I was mildly (but only mildly) annoyed that it's implied that all his mannerisms and eccentricities were already fully baked in to him at this young age rather than a cumulative result of being an older cynical Wonka who's looking to retire and pass along his empire after years of being a recluse. Also, he was WAY more magical at this stage than he was in his later years for whatever reason. But eventually I told the analytical side of my brain to shut up and just enjoyed the whimsy and wonder.
I went to see this a little reluctantly, for the same reasons as you stated, but my friend was insistent. I walked out of the cinema utterly enchanted. I love this movie. By the way, the guy playing the Zoo Guard is the same guy who wrote the screenplay.
I had just watched the movie too! Sort of stumbled upon it and pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. A lot of heart from the characters, the songs, and the whole setting of the film.
I literally went to watch this movie with my friends on our last day of classes (before winter holidays) and I went mostly to hang out with them, not expecting a lot since I don't like the other movies but this was a very cute movie I enjoyed a lot
I thought there were some good homages to Denny DeVito and his tribute and interpretation of the Roald Dahl classic Matilda. For example the angle with which they shot/portrayed the antagonist inn keepers is very similar to how the Trunchbull is portrayed. Also the little dungeon is like the chokey. Anyway I wouldn't be surprised if that was intentional and or a tribute to how perfectly DeVito captured the essence of Roald Dahl pitting children against rotten adults.
you really need to watch "call me by your name" There is a reason its what made Timmy huge..Love your reactions btw... don't ever stop..we need our "Natalie-fix" 🥰
This movie feels like a warm hug. The night I saw it in theaters the snowstorm we had was terrible. It's a cute kids film and I love a lot of the songs. Especially the villains song. It was funny
Girl, I’m with you. Having grown up with all the originals of some of these classic movies it’s hard to watch the newer ones. I tend to eventually give in. And with this one specifically, I was worried. But it’s cool how they tied it into the original in a way.
So here goes an awsome detail. When willy is charged for daydreaming he had 6 coins, he doesn't know how to read so he gave 4 to the officer instead of 3 like the sign indicated. You know this because he gave one to the lady with a baby and lost his ramaining one, if he had given 3 to the officer he would have had 1 extra silver coin after he lost one to the drain. And there's a small pay off for this, when his money is confiscated in his first public act he says to the officer if he could have at least one to pay for his room, this officer is the same that charged him for daydreaming, so when he gives this coin to wonka he is not giving him any of the money he earned selling chocolate he is giving him back the one extra silver coin wonka gave him. This show this one cop is not a crook or corrupt, he follows orders to a tea and is honest, he just gave wonka the one coin that was legally his.
The original holds a special place in my heart, so I was a little skeptical about this one but was delighted by it! I think Timothée really brings his own take on Wonka and does it well.
I was also pleasantly surprised at this, I had low expectations going in. Since you mentioned it, I would love to see you react to Call Me By Your Name. I think you would like it a lot. Love your reactions! 😊

@@vankraemer2979 No he didn't. He died before the Tim Burton one. He hated Wilder so much that they couldn't get the rights to EVER adapt that book until a considerable amount of time after his death. However, his widow was still alive and loved it
the second this movie began with him coming home to london on a ship, i decided to headcanon that Sweeny Todd may just be on that very same boat (or at least one similar, later that night.) AND THEN MY THEORY WAS CONFIRMED WHEN THAT POLICE ASKED "what about all the murders & missing persons" or whatever. so yeah. this bought off cop was the reason sweeny got away with it for so long. good going, Keegan.
lol I was thinking the same thing!!! It’s even funnier if you look at other musicals and realize they don’t happen to far away from each other, like Phantom of the opera and Les Miserables
people complain that this Wonka is too happy and niave and it doesnt make sense he would be become the bitter man we saw in Wilder, but to me it makes sense, he spent his time being niave and trusting people over and over only to have all his secrets stolen which makes him become a shut in slowly making him become a bitter loner
I saw it in the theaters on opening weekend. I had no expectations about the film and hadn't seen anything that Chalamet had done prior to this. I grew up with the Wilder film also. This film did not disappoint and I enjoyed watching your review! You got emotional at the same parts I did. I will definitely rewatch this film. Now I need to see more Paul King films. I hope the rumors of a sequel are true if it can be this good.
While I love the movie, and especially love the homages to the original film, they broke away from the original story by bringing in the Oompa Loompa, although that could be explained away, Wonka did not find the Oompa Loompas until his factory was already up and running, then Slugworth sent spies into his factory to "steal his candy-making secrets", threw everyone out, yelled, "I shall be ruined" and shut the doors. Then, one day, the factory started running again, turning out more candy than ever before. That was when he found the Oompa Loompas and they created the "fantasy world" inside the factory.
It’s been stuck in my head since I first heard it! If I were the people who make the special features, I would have made a sing along version of the movie!
Simple, Willy helps the Oompa Loompa payback the tribe the ten thousand fold back and begins a friendship with them for years and years and when Willy no longer can trust people to work in his Factory anymore he asks The Oompa Loompa’s for help.
A few months ago I went to a special screening of the original movie with two of the actors from the movie. There was a costume contest and I won 3rd place for dressing as Slugworth.
I'm like you. I came into this with low expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. One thing I wonder is what happened to Noodle? Why would Wonka look for someone else to pass on his factory to when Noodle would be the obvious choice?
It was so hard to see one of my favorite actresses (icon) Olivia Coleman as the villain of the story. I love Timothee in this role but the story was fairly dark, that is, until Hugh Grant as the Umpa Loompa showed up…made it for me! He was hilarious!
Thank you watching this version of Willy Wonka. I liked it and I loved the songs in the musical. The casting was fantastic. I loved at scenes that you laughed at. The Easter eggs were great to see. I can’t wait to see what you’ll watch next. I think you did an incredible job.

Glad to see more people loving this movie!!! Next to Godzilla Minus One, this was my favorite film of 2023
the second this movie began with him coming home to london on a ship, i decided to headcanon that Sweeny Todd may just be on that very same boat (or at least one similar, later that night.)
AND THEN MY THEORY WAS CONFIRMED WHEN THAT POLICE ASKED "what about all the murders & missing persons" or whatever. so yeah. this bought off cop was the reason sweeny got away with it for so long. good going, Keegan.
lol I was thinking the same thing!!! It’s even funnier if you look at other musicals and realize they don’t happen to far away from each other, like Phantom of the opera and Les Miserables
@@questworldiangreenknight7455 I prefer to keep the LCU (London Cinematic Universe) & the French CU separate in my mind 🙏🏼 lmao /j
@@ccorvid lol fair enough
people complain that this Wonka is too happy and niave and it doesnt make sense he would be become the bitter man we saw in Wilder, but to me it makes sense, he spent his time being niave and trusting people over and over only to have all his secrets stolen which makes him become a shut in slowly making him become a bitter loner
This movie made me so happy and feel warm inside, i really love this movie, it's Definitely my favorite Wonka movie
"So basically, Wonka's making drugs." Breaking...Cad...bury? (sorry, it was the best I could do)
You should really watch SOCIETY OF THE SNOW!! Is an amazing movie ❤️
I noticed whenever people compare this Wonka its always to Gene Wilder, not Johnny Depp. Hmmm 🤔
I was very skeptical about this one, but once I agreed to see it, it quickly won me over. It was the best kind of pleasant surprise.
Loved this movie! It was very magical!
I was honestly shocked at how well it did in theaters but then I watched it on streaming and I’m happy they proved my assumptions wrong.
21:32 WITH DYNAMITE!! 😂😂😂
Tim is really good in "The King"
Just received my copy in the mail the other day.
Hatful of Dreams is a banger
It’s been stuck in my head since I first heard it!
If I were the people who make the special features, I would have made a sing along version of the movie!
Simple, Willy helps the Oompa Loompa payback the tribe the ten thousand fold back and begins a friendship with them for years and years and when Willy no longer can trust people to work in his Factory anymore he asks The Oompa Loompa’s for help.
I was really worried about this film but like the way it turned out.
She was grown up by the
It was so hard to see one of my favorite actresses (icon) Olivia Coleman as the villain of the story. I love Timothee in this role but the story was fairly dark, that is, until Hugh Grant as the Umpa Loompa showed up…made it for me! He was hilarious!
Long live the fighters!
Went into this skeptical, came out loving it. The fact that they didn't promote this as a musical is a crime. As soon as the music hit i smiled.
Thank you watching this version of Willy Wonka. I liked it and I loved the songs in the musical. The casting was fantastic. I loved at scenes that you laughed at. The Easter eggs were great to see. I can’t wait to see what you’ll watch next. I think you did an incredible job.
This was made by the same guy who made Paddington 1 & 2, if you're looking for more high quality goofy movies in this style check them out!
Journey to Bethlehem is a very nice musical as well, I recommend watching it
You'd remember the guard from PADDINGTON IF YOU WATCHED PADDINGTON AND PADDINGTON 2 YOUR LIFE IS INCOMPLETE IF YOU DON'T WATCH THEM AGDJJGIFKSBSVGSYCIKSJSS
The "Tunnel scene" in the original is a Shel Silverstein poem.
4:19 "Ooh, read the contract, son, read . . . so- son?" Hahaha.
