HELLO FROM COUNTRY #172 - ERITREA!
I'm thrilled to be back in Africa where I will spend the remaining 3 months of the year! Many of you probably haven’t heard of Eritrea before and that’s because it’s a relatively new country and it’s notoriously difficult to enter (top 5 in the world). After 48 hours of roaming around the capital of Asmara and the ancient port city of Massawa, I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
I’m getting flashbacks to when I was in Ethiopia, yet also touches of Yemen Somaliland and Italy. Yes - ITALY! Eritrea is a former Italian colony and their influence is remarkably well-preserved in the form of giant cathedrals, pizza parlors, gelato shops, old Italian cars, appertivos and many people can still speak fluent Italiano.
The capital of Asmara is VERY safe, with kind-hearted people and surprisingly the weather is cold here (2,400 meters high). Unfortunately due to WiFi issues, I haven't been able to upload anything until now, but there’s no hurry because life is wonderful here! More to come soon 🇪🇷

Although Eritrea has a decent amount of Italian influence I think that it is important to note that they did not settle in Eritrea but colonized it. The Italians came over and used the native people to build the very places that you showed and were discriminatory towards them. The culture is one of the oldest in the world and is known for its powerful kingdoms such as the Axumite and D'mt. It goes way further and deeper than being reduced to the "Italy of Africa".

Italy undertook various construction projects in Eritrea during its benevolent rule, which lasted from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. Some of the significant infrastructure and buildings include:
Port Facilities: The Italians developed the port of Massawa into a major commercial hub. They constructed docks, warehouses, and other port facilities to support trade and military activities.
Railroads: One of the most notable projects was the construction of the Eritrean Railway, which connected the port city of Massawa to the highland town of Asmara. This railway was essential for the transportation of goods and people.
Administrative Buildings: In Asmara, the Italians built various administrative and government buildings. The city became a focal point of colonial administration and development.
Architecture: Italian architectural styles were evident in Asmara, where they constructed several buildings in the Art Deco and modernist styles. Some of these structures remain iconic examples of colonial-era architecture.
Agricultural Projects: The Italians initiated agricultural development projects, including irrigation systems and plantations, to improve local agriculture and support the colonial economy.
In Somalia, Libia, Eritrea, Albania, Romania and Croatia people understand or speak Italian.

Its interesting, the people in the comments who dislike Italians are clearly not Eritreans. They are either Ethiopians who claim that Italy separated Eritrea and Ethiopia (WRONG), or hoteps from America bitching about two countries that they dont come from.
1. Eritrea took up arms for independence as a response to Etiopian subjegation, they shut down our parliment and banned our languages. It was Ethiopias fault not Italy.
2. Eritrea has a close relationship to Italy, they did colonize Eritrea, but they actually behaved better then the Ethiopians. Italy built the longest Cableway in the world in Eritrea. They built more traffic lights in Asmara then in Rome. They made sure all Eritreans had access to modern sanitation and hospital services.
There were racial laws, dont get me wrong, but nothing like what happened in the rest of Africa, nothing like what the Ottomans did, nothing like Ethiopians or the British did.
Read about the Eritrean Ascari, a fighting force respect as highly as the Ghurka. The british actually wanted to split Eritrea up between Sudan and Ethiopia. An Eritrean-Italian togther with help from the pope lobbied in the UN against this and won with one vote thanks to Haiti.
Not everything is black and white. If Italians behaved like the french in Congo, then I would have been the first to say off with their heads, but the italians I have met in Eritrea and abroad who knows about Eritrea are very humble and curious about our shared history. How can I dislike that?
I and the rest of Eritrea welcome every humble Italian who is curious and want to know more about a period in time were our two nations shared the same pages of history.
Also thank god it was not french people, Yuck..
@Lily Lily I understand were you come from, but I want it to be clear that im not saying that colonization was good or that I defend it. Im trying to make people understand that this was way back then, the world was different but still Eritreans have always been proud and just like they first welcomed the Ethiopians and later fought them towards victory, freedom and independence (when they tried to take away our rights and subjugate us), exactly the same thing would have happened if the Italians would have treated Eritrea and Eritreans bad, we would have fought to kick them out too. The only reason why Eritreans were ok with Italian rule was because back then it was better then what we had, they built and modernized the country. Racial laws existed, but those laws existed before too, they were just class laws, very few people had acces to the wealth of Eritrea.
I dont doubt in my mind that if the Italians would not have been kicked out after WW2, they would either have had to live with Eritreans without racial laws or they would have been kicked out. Just like you say, they brought alot of good to the country in a period where we unfortunatly were not strong financially.
I want you to know my beautifuö Eritrean sister that im not trying to offend you, I just want people to know how proud and beautiful my people are. We think before we acted, just because we let the Italians stay and build does not mean we had too, we just realized it was to our benefit at the time.
you talk too much lol
@@painkillerO8 I dont know who you are talking too, but why dont you keep your thoughts to yourself. I am clearly talking to someone who wants to talk to me, who the F are you to care? I love my country, I am proud over my country, and I bet you dont have the same pride for your country if you have one, because if you did you would never have a problem with someone else showing his/her love and pride for their country. Punk ass bitch
@Lily Lily And when we where strong we also colonized, I think the last country we colonized was Yemen. Massawa was the biggest hub/port for slavery on the entire east coast of Africa, and no it was not Eritrean slaves it was slaves that where taken from West and Central Africa. The Italians came with something better at the time, had they instead tried to subjugate us by banning our language and culture, I no it would have been a war and that the people of Eritrea would not have stopped fighting until we had independence.
Even after the british kicked out the Italians, the majority of Eritreans supported Italian rule, they would never had done that if they did not benefit from it, meaning that they would never had done it if it was more bad then good, see Belgians in Congo, British in kenya or French in west Africa for comparison.

I was actually born in Eritrea
i wish drew had explored more about the ancient history of Eritrea instead of the Italian influence of the country. watching the video some people might get the wrong idea that some how Eritrean are proud of being colonized by the Italians because they preserved their legacy. yes ,the engineers and the architects of those buildings were Italians, but make no mistake they were built by the sweat and blood of Eritreans. All the material used in those buildings were also Eritrean. Furthermore, Italy didn't build the city for the natives, it was meant for the white Italians, in fact Italy had the first apartheid system in Eritrea way before south Africa. Natives were not allowed in the city center. i guess what i am trying to say is Eritreans should be proud of those beautiful buildings because they were build by their grand parents who paid heavy price.
this is so important, thank you for writing it
Right ❤
what do you mean we should be proud of the Italian colonisation just because of they built few buildings and road. what about our gold that has been taken worth of millions USA dollars. i totally disagree with your statement and I'm not proud of being colonised by any county not only Italia.
@@DanielZeresenay read my comment again and then respond. You completely misunderstood it.
Cpared italian colonialism with other European empire and than try to say that again, even italian don't claim those structures as their, during fascism they were depicted as our brother in army not as an inferiour being (like all the other beautiful and democratic European colonialist empire), Italian put an end to slavery in Eritrea in 1935.
The Italian were so bad that ascari still tried to fight against British occupation after fascist capitulation, but yeah we all saw the bright future UK and US granted to Eritrea after they fight down fascist.
I still believe that Italy should make everything that's possible to regain a direct influence over those countries and help them to restore their greatness instead of saying "we were bad Urr durr" and let them alone in a far worst situation in the current days.

Well, you won't find it here. So the Italiens "rolled up" to Eritrea, then more and more came, they built roads and buildings and then left... mhm.
Sure you could describe the brutal colonialisation of a country that way.
Italian colonialism in xx century is actually known as one of the greatest flop in colonialism history . ''Leaving aside '' the war crimes they did , basically they spent so much money in the colonies that even today when buying fuel in Italy , people are paying an extra tax called accisa that basically is half the price of fuel

Ciao Enrico.

@@alberto.delbono no somalis no longer speak Italian maybe some of the older generation but the civil war has wiped nearly all Italian influence. Was that your question?
@@theflagbearer9196 also. I'd like asking what you inhabitants of the African Corn (Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea) think about Italy and if you consider it more a cruel ruler or a friend
@@alberto.delbono obviously not a good history, but at the same especially for us Somalis the effect didn't last long as the Italians didn't control us for our long, Mogadishu our capital didn't fully fall untill 1935 to the Italians and between 1945 to 1950 the British took over as punishment for the Italians trying to take British Somaliland from Britain. And then the last 10 years was a combination of mostly UN, and some Somali and Italian rule. So in short we don't really think that much about our history with the Italians, a funny thing is the civil war wiped most of their influence.
