- Eritrea is located in East Africa, in the "Horn of Africa". It is a very hard country to not only get a visa, but also to travel within the country. Eritrea is one of the youngest countries in the world, after gaining its independence in 1993.
It has a lot of beauty and wonders to discover, and some of the friendliest people you will meet.
This countries is full of restrictions which makes it very challenging as a tourist. It has also been colonized many times, with Italy having the most profound and lasting influence on it.
Asmara is the beautiful capital of Eritrea, and in the video I will show you around the city, and taking you through all of the restrictions so that you will know what to expect.
This is part one of three videos in my Eritrea series.

Spent 2 years in Eritrea in Peace Corps from 1996-98 near the Ethiopian border, about 13K south of Senafe. No electricity or running water. Fell in love with the country, then . . .. was evacuated at the start of the war, returned 3 times: Once during the war, twice after. Appreciate your openness to travel to this unique place! Beautiful video! As you may understand, Eritrea is very closed off due to geopolitics, we do not bend over backwards to western interest and are ostracized because of this. We're still recovering from a brutal war of independence that killed half of our people. Not everything is perfect, but people are safe, happy, educated and healthy.

Years of economic sanctions imposed by the United States with the support of the UN have meant that the Eritrean economy has suffered. The inability of foreign companies to invest or trade with Eritrea. Ethiopia repeatedly attempted to invade Eritrea. The electricity that comes and goes, the internet only in internet cafés and the water that comes intermittently are details if we compare them to the fact that the existence of Eritrea itself had been called into question by the strong international powers. If you could imagine these people have been through in the past 80 years, you would cry but then ask yourself how did they do it? and thanks to the sanctions and isolations did on the people, which literally did nothing to the Government but all of it went on the back of the people. Their problem is different from the problem of the world and yet harder. But they never gave up. A little opportunity and they are will be far better than Singapore. And I’m so sad to read all the comments of all the Eritreans living in a free country, with internet, unlimited water and Electricity, sticking up for the government who is making their beautiful people suffer. I am blown away that the “western Eritreans” are not fighting for their people… instead many western Eritreans are putting full blame on the sanctions. There is poor infrastructure in the water supply- the government is responsible for that. Eritrea is directly on the Red Sea which is one of the most valuable resources. The government is not helping the people, instead they are restricting them and not allowing them to prosper. It’s not right.

South Sudan is the youngest, got independence in 2011, but Eritrea is the Oldest got in independence in 1992
Correction:May 24 1991 is when Eritrea🇪🇷became an independent sovereignty & fully recognized by the International community or United Nations 🇺🇳in 1993.

Love this video! As an Eritrean that was born in America, I find it best to visit Eritrea during the months of june-august. Normally Europeans show up around august and Americans are often there late may- june-july. There are often people (other foreigners) there that speak english and Tigrinya during june-july that can help very much to find things.

As someone of Ethiopian descent with an Eritrean uncle I can’t see why anyone would want to go through the hassle just for a quick visit to what seems to be a boring place-I can find much more excitement in Sacramento, CA than I ever can here!

I'm one of the victims of the Ethio-Eri war (1998-2000), who escaped from the brutal regime. Now, I live in Norway, a beautiful and peaceful country. I can see with my eys how the governments of the scandinavian countries treat not only their citizens but also illegal immigrants. So why not our governors kept us in such enslavement, although the are whom we respected them more than our parents?

This was indeed a controversial one. I got worried when you couldn’t find a decent hotel for a while and there’s no internet. I’ve read some of the comments and people seem protective of the country which is understandable, but I think they’re focusing on the wrong situation. Africa is full of wonderful, talented people and has lot of natural resources, but lack of good leaders. It is unconceivable to me that an entire country has no internet and very few hours of power during the day.
I hope the rest of your journey goes well. I know you are experienced and know how to take care of yourself.

Glad you enjoyed! Yea, it will be impossible to work remotely here. There are a few internet cafes but the connection in super slow- you can’t even access Facebook - not that you would need to for work - but I don’t know what else is limited.

Dear sister - I am an Ethiopian by heritage so you might not assume I am being biased when I state the following (although there are many things Ethiopia shares with Eritrea in terms of culture, religion, language [both Amharic and Tigrigna originating from Ge'ez], history, features, food, etc). Eritrea had been under enormous and paralyzing sanctions imposed by the US administration because the country refused to be a US puppet. Thus, the sanctions led to the country's slow economic and social development. Eritreans, much like Ethiopians and other Africans, are hard-working, hospitable, innovative (as you witnessed!) and proud, not one to be looked down on as inferior and uncivilized people (many countries in the area were in existence while Western civilization was not). The unavailability of electricity or the Internet should not be taken as signs of under-development, etc but as clear evidence of the effects of the sanctions. Eritreans are admirable people: despite all the challenges imposed by the West, they refused to give in to US's unreasonable and immoral demands, favouring their sovereignty and independence over everything else! This portrayal of the country as 'the North Korea of Africa' is nothing but a smear campaign against it and its leader who is highly admired for his decisiveness and integrity. The American way of life is not universal (although that is what it is intended to be) - Eritreans have the right to follow any model of governance they like, even a dictatorship if they so wish. They have shown nobody is going to impose their views and beliefs upon them in the most vivid way possible for the last three decades. It is unlikely this is going to change any sooner, especially at a time when Western democracy has been tested and found to be missing, as glaringly witnessed in the Palestinian-Israeli war where the US administration broke every rule of international human rights and humanitarian laws. Eritreans (as many other African countries) no longer need to get their democracy lessons from corrupt and regressing Western governments but from their own, home made and inherited legacies of their ancestors. So, try not to visit countries with a mindset of them fitting your expectations but with an open-mindedness required to learn and appreciate a different way of life, as yours, contrary to your beliefs, is only one such way.
