- I traveled to the Tigray region in Northern Ethiopia to make the dangerous climb to a monastery in the Gheralta mountains, called Abune Yemata Guh. It is one of the most inaccessible and hardest churches to get to. We traveled with @worldsunethiopiatours7029 to Abuna Yemata Guh, a church in the sandstone cliffs, over 8000 feet in the air. There is a priest who makes the climb every single day and he was there to show us the inside of the church.
You first have to hike for 40 minutes up the the natural rocks steps, until you reach a point where you have to take off your shoes and climb the rest straight up and barefoot. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done, but I am so happy I did it. This place is magical and very spiritual.
Along the journey, we visited the oldest mosque in Africa, ate traditional Tigrayan food, and met great Tigrayan people. This area was the center point of the Tigrayan war that lasted 2 years and started in 2020. There was so much destruction done to the area during that time, and luckily some of the heritage sites withstood the war.

You are so brave to climb the holly mountains. For several centuries, priests and locals have worshipped God from such heights every single day. There aren’t a whole lot of places that have stood the test of time and history to remain uncompromisingly faithful to God. The significance of the climb symbolizes putting the body at risk without fear or reservation, a testament to their faith, seeking his love from plains above. The ancestors in their infinite wisdom ensured future generations had a place of worship even if invaded by outsiders, they made certain the enemy cannot reach their place of worship as it was and still remains their most sacred possession.
