  • Today we continue my series on what to shoot in the night sky when there isn't any milky way core. The subject of todays video is Magellanic Clouds Nightscape Photography.
    I went looking for a foreground that I felt could give some impact to these magnificent celestial subjects. Eventually I made my way to the quaint little Central Victorian town of Maldon. The old Beehive Gold Mine is a favourite spot of mine and I decided upon featuring the chimney which dominates the landscape there.
    The Magellanic Clouds are galaxies found in the Southern Hemisphere and they are certainly a favourite for me to shoot. Where I live they never set below the horizon so are wonderful all year round subjects in the night sky.

    Being in the northern hemisphere I am certainly envious of the views you get in the southern part of the planet, especially the Magellanic Clouds. I visited Australia in 2016 for a couple of weeks, but never noticed them, mainly because I was staying in Melbourne I suppose. Plus I didn't know to look for them as I had never heard of them. I did stay one night in Wilson's Promontory, which would have likely been ideal, but it it was a bit cloudy as I recall. Thanks for sharing, Richard!

    Takes me back to 1998 when, after crossing the Nullarbor on a train, I saw the Magellanic clouds through my 7x50 binoculars; over my relo's place in Dublin (60km north of Adelaide).
    While noticing that the Sun arched right to left across the Northern side of the sky; and Orion was 'upside-down'; I also saw what they call 'the jewel box' - a multi-coloured open star cluster that was just lovely (nothing like it in my Scottish skies) - maybe you will treat us to that shot sometime Richard.

    You are blessed with some dark skies for sure! I'd love to see something about how you deal with areas where there might be some great subject matter, but bad short-range light pollution like from lamp posts. Also, how do deal with brighter foregrounds and not-so-dark skies (Bortle 3-4 etc). I'm sure you have a brilliant solution!

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  3 года назад

      Thanks so much for watching. To be honest because I have access to really dark skies I rarely go anywhere near severe light pollution. If a foreground is a little bright then I'll stop down the aperture and lower the iso so it doesn't blow out. Then all I do is vary the intensity of light painting to suit.

    • @nightscapeimages.richard

      Thanks so much Suzanne. For tracking it all depends on accurate polar alignment. If it's aligned well then maybe a 2 minute exposure is possible. It is always harder to do tracked panoramas as it's more difficult to keep the camera level and ensure the overlap between images is even.
