I've bumped into your channel totally by chance... And I'm very happy it happened! I love to walk around in the night with cameras and a tripods to shoot streets and neon signs. U know I live in Rome, Italy, and here we've a littlle bit too much of orange glow to really shoot stars (sometimes even to SEE them). But the arguments u talk about are so close to my work that i think i can transplant some of them very effectively into my night works... And who knows, maybe also pack my car ad drive 50-70 km outside the city limit to try some starry sky experiments. Anyway, thanks for your work and explanations, and... G'day!

I did enjoy the stuff on the use of flash and look forward to a further video on this. I would also be interested in a more detailed video on panos, in particular how you do your overlaps, especially in the vertical move.

One question I would like to ask is what a decent milkway image looks like straight out of camera if you could possibly show us in an upcoming video. On the odd occasion I find myself on holiday somewhere with dark sky's I struggle to obtain any decent Astro images and it is driving me crazy!
@@martynrichards9034 Yes it's an interesting question Martyn. The milky way straight out of camera never looks as impressive and I think RAW files in general are pretty flat. There is certainly a lot of colour information in those raw files but there is also no doubt that many people go beyond the natural colours in nightscapes.
I really like the old hut, a rare find indeed. Using principles of portrait and flash photography is great though personally l don't know how l would lug around so much gear. That being said with the right location and if time wasn't pressed l'm sure it certainly could add to a variety of shots and angles. Well done on the F10 light painting and zipping around to light paint the single hut shot, they were both great.
Absolutely stunning as usual Richard , the first time I noticed Orion downunder I noticed something was wrong ? It was upside down compared to how I see it normally 😊 I have an Orion Star tracker which I will use when I do some time lapse sequences .

Great production and informative video. Awesome shots!!! Question, when you do your rows for panos, do you use a special tool or just the tripod and I assume you keep the same infinity focus point when you start or refocus when you start each row. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for watching David. I just use a tripod fitted with a ball head. My method is to keep the camera level using the inbuilt spirit level. I overlap a lot, sometimes 50% and I do keep the focus on infinity for each shot. I'll generally not have a lot of emphasis on really close foreground objects for panos cause it's a lot harder to focus stack.

Iam really new to nightscape photography and have been watching lots of your videos to try and make sense of the blending images from lightroom / photoshop, Would it be possible to maybe do a step by step guide for dummys on every single aspect? ie layer masks ..which i find really hard to understand. i have just bought my first lens for astro and cant wait to get some better weather here in the highlands of scotland. nikon d810 / 14mm samyang your work is amazing richard and really inspiring , thanks so much Ian Oban Scotland

Thanks heaps for watching Brendon. I've never once seen a snake either in the daytime or at night. I do keep an eye out for them and make a lot of noise when I'm in these spots. Usually when I'm shooting it's in the cooler months and that helps.
Thanks for watching. I always manually set my white balance usually between 3800k and 4200k. If there is any moonlight I'll generally set it higher maybe 5000k. It's more a creative choice than anything else.

Thanks again Gonzalo, I do have the 24mm f1.4 and I've heard the 20mm f1.8 is very good. Personally I prefer the 20mm focal length for general nightscapes. Just make sure you get a good copy of the lens as that brand is renowned for quality control issues.
With rear sync does your flash fire before the first shutter opens and again just before it closes? My canon seems to do this. I am very new using flashes.
No it shouldn't do that Spence. There are 2 possibilities. 1. You may be shooting in TTL .. if you do that the camera requires a pre-flash to get a meter reading for the main flash to follow. 2. What brand of flash are you using and is it off camera ..??
You got a New Car?? How are you finding the Genie Mini with syrp constantly doing firmware updates ? I updated mine two weeks ago and Saturday morning I had to do yet another update before I could get going again ... otherwise they are a great bit of kit small and portable and a don't take up much room

Yes I've had it a few months now John. To be honest I don't use the Genie very much.

What flash light and panel do you use
I use a number of lights. But the most common is a LED Lenser P7 flashlight. I also use a Ulanzi VL49 light panel as well as F&V Z96 video light.

I'd say 2-3 in most locations . .some closer to 4.
Hi Richard, just looking back at this video of yours. I didn't know you were a Timelapse + View user. Do you still use it?
I bought one about 9 months ago and even though it has its quirks it's a handy unit for ramping timelapse.

Thanks for watching Trevor. I haven't used the View for a while but I will when the time is right. In June I can get the milky way core rising in the east just on sunset so it makes a good transition from day to night. I agree . .it has it's quirks but is a great piece of gear. PS: I love your attached clip .. well done.
