  • This is our perfectly imperfect tiny house tour. We bought a retired school bus and converted it into a rustic cabin on wheels ourselves.
5 years ago we saw a couple on RUclips traveling full time while making money on the road. We were taken by that lifestyle and wanted it for ourselves, so we started making decisions that would hopefully help to one day make that dream a reality.
That's when the skoolie came in. We found videos of people converting school buses into tiny houses. School buses were solid vehicles that were fantastic platforms to build on and were also CHEAP, relatively speaking. For just a couple thousand dollars you could have the foundation for a custom build that your dreams were made of, so that's what we did.
After two years of converting, we ended up with our custom built tiny house on wheels. It's rough around the edges, in some cases literally, but it's ours. It works, and it allows us to travel full time.
All together, we estimate our final costs were ~$23k. We could have done it MUCH cheaper, but we didn't know what we were doing so we made some costly mistakes. Still, our 23k custom built tiny house is MUCH less expensive than new and many used RVs or campers out there, and it has everything we want and nothing we don't.
We drive our Subaru Outback behind the bus. This travel setup helps us go where we want, when we want, and to stay for essentially as long as we want.

This is a blast from the past! My Russian grandparents, fleeing war torn Europe, took the first ticket out and it was to Venezuela. They disembarked, given an allotment of $10.00 per person. My family decided that instead of trying to go small, bought a bus and the property it was "stranded" on, as it had no wheels. That bus became a home for a family of 5 with one on the way. My grandma told stories of using the engine area as her kitchen! Omg! They lived there for over 10 years building up money to emigrate to the USA. I am the first born in the USA. So proud of my family's origin story! 🤗😘🌈

It really doesn't get any better than this. While watching this, I pictured myself eating a bowl of chili with cornbread, while watching nature's animals outside the bus, then later on taking a nap INSIDE the bus, and having so much peace and quiet surrounding me.

That's the hardest part, if you keep your 9-5 and stay in your bus/van it'll be a lot cheaper with no house/rent payments, but there are a lot of stay at home jobs, but if you're not skilled in some aspects it'll be harder, for instance, if you're a graphic designer and you're comfortable with taking in jobs it shouldn't be too hard, or if you're a videographer and you drive around the country to make videos

Thanks, you guys are an inspiration. I'm presently working on doing the same thing. RV's are insanely expensive, even the used ones, and besides that, they are flimsy and can't carry all that much weight. But my (school) bus is hardcore steel, designed to haul 8000 lbs of human being and their stuff.
At the moment I'm gathering all the components of the PV system I designed because I'm installing that first. The idea is it is going to actually help with the rest of the build, powering tools and stuff.
Thanks again! Now, if we happen to bump into you guys at one of those events, we don't have to be among of the numerous hordes of people gawking at your bus and tracking in all kinds of crap on my feet. I can just sit back and watch this really cool tour video ;-)

Wonderful. I plan to do something like this when I retire in three years. I watch this and wonder why I waited so long. We are all taught that the way to do this is the either be wealthy, or to wait, after getting the house, finding a mate, raising the kids, pursuing the career, and then living your dream after you are old enough to have "earned" the life you want. That view is wrong, but it took me sixty years to figure it out. Congratulations on thinking outside the envelope, and making your life your own. Also congratulations to you both for finding a partner crazy enough to do this with you.

I have loved your bus from day one. Your style is my style, love everything about it!! You have done an amazing job. Boy she's heavy, but all that lovely yumminess inside I can see why. All that lovely wood. The miles per gallon could use some help, but again, all that weight. You have really done an amazing job and the stove is a great touch. I do think it's a bummer that you are traveling separately tho', that sucks. I can't remember your reason of not towing. Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it and the lovely radio voice makes it very easy to listen to. :) Safe travels.

Tiff gets car sick and the dogs are too anxious in the bus, if I recall. Makes it easier for everyone. Plus it's loud while the bus is running... Don't necessarily spend much quality time together if you can't talk and everyone's uncomfortable.

    Great job! Great Schoolie!
I've been remodeling my 1988 Gulf Stream Sun Stream 36ft motorhome. I just put on a fresh coat of maroon paint to the exterior today! I really like your woodwork and have been watching Schoolie videos for ideas for my ceiling. Also saw a really cool wood dashboard I'd like to try for my coach. I've torn out all of the carpet and in the living area, kitchen and hallway installed hardwood floors in the bedroom and bathroom I installed ceramic tile floors. I've also upgrade both A/C units, added a endless tankless water heater. Xantrex innverter power system. Plan on adding solar later. Painted the entire exterior for a full painted body, painted the interior walls but keept the oak cabinets original. I've built a new dinette table top from a repurposed bed headboard I found in a neighbor's truck. Next I'm having the sofa and dinette cushions reupholstered. I've been living in the coach for about 25 years now. So some things have begun to show their age. I've also replaced all of the drapes and valence's. I love my 1988 coach as much now as the day I brought it home. Cheers to you guys! Hope to see you on the road!
