Actually, Happy Birthday was pulled into the Public Domain in 2016 in a court case.
Wow
Cool
I was checking the comments to see if anyone else mentioned this.
Technically not quite. The court essentially ruled that the person who claimed to own the copyright didn't in fact own it. That makes Happy Birthday an orphaned work, someone else could hypothetically come along and prove they hold the rights to it. That said, there's some other very questionable shenanigans that were pulled previously to extend the copyright on Happy Birthday, it arguably should have entered the public domain a while ago, but the courts didn't rule on that.
@@shadowninja6689 Right they only own the rights to their arrangement of the song, not the song itself.
Lets take in the fact that this channel just rickrolled us so smoothly
So far you're the only one in the comment section talking about it I was highly expecting a lot of people talking about it

10+ years ago I once had a neighbor who left their wifi unprotected...at the time all I used the internet for was my xbox. I used their wifi for like 4 years or so until one day it vanished all together. Finally I had to cave in and pay for it. The best part was that I never lagged on their wifi.
Aye I definitely had a neighbor like that. Would steal there wifi and play Xbox as a kid when we didn’t have any at the time
Lol

Y'all need to do your research better. This is an excerpt right off the Happy birthday song Wikipedia page, "The song is in the public domain in the United States and the European Union. Warner Chappell Music had previously claimed copyright on the song in the US and collected licensing fees for its use; in 2015 the copyright claim was declared invalid and Warner Chappell agreed to pay back $14 million in licensing fees."

The American flag law was actually ruled unconstitutional because it violated the first amendment.
Also you can argue if you're on a freeway where everyone is going 70 mpg and the speed limit is 55 mpg, if you get pulled over in the state of California you can argue that the minimum speed limit was above the maximum speed limit, and therefore you would be breaking the law no matter what. For this reason, police will usually only pull over someone who is speeding if they are weaving between cars or going noticeably faster than the cars around them. This is an argument to make in court, not to the officer.
Actually wearing the American flag is still illegal just not enforced.
mph, not mpg
Also the speed limit one is a bit incorrect as the minimum speed is legally based on the speed limit, not the average speed of the traffic, though, this is common misunderstanding in most states since the way it is misunderstood to be would be the safer wording in theory.
Same as the happy birthday one.
You WISH you could get 70mpg! LOL!
Corrupt Politicians: *Spend the taxes we pay in their luxuries*

The one about Happy Birthday is out of date because the song was in public domain since 9/23/2015.

The strangest law I've heard of comes from a city in Wisconsin (I can't remember the name) but it's illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your pocket
The original law made it illegal to walk with an ice cream cone in your back pocket, because horse thieves would do that to entice a horse to follow them out of the jurisdiction. Being followed by a horse was technically not considered thievery, and they got away with it until the laws were passed in the 1800s
Wtfh 😂
It was also enforced in Lexington KY.
Well, I'm okay with that. The ice cream would melt and mess up your clothes.
Why would anyone carry an ice cream cone in their pocket?
That last law about being drunk in public is true and fairly often enforced. A village pub in the village my dad lives in had a particularly rowdy Thursday last year. It's normally a quiet pub but the only decent one for young and middle aged people so it can get lively. Some neighbours called the cops, they came in and fined the owners and everybody inside the pub.
It racked up so much the owners had to sell a couple of months later, they were low of funds due to the pandemic (legal amount of people inside by the way) and it being a pub. But this fine was just too much! The new owners are nice enough but it's weird that this can happen because someone who decided to live next to a pub didn't like living next to a pub and it was after 11pm...
In Louisiana no one cares if your drunk in public especially in New Orleans
Just like people that constantly complain about airplane noise when they knowingly bought a house next to an airport.
Karens exist EVERYWHERE!
People who move next to properties that generate noise then complain about it deserve to be ignored unless they can prove a breach of the venue's licensing.
Some clown moved next door to one of Manchester's oldest music venues, then proceeded to complain about the loud music, almost getting the venue shut down. People truly are idiots at times.
@@anjakellenjeter Yep! Happens here too! you KNEW there was a music venue next door, WHY move in there if you don't like loud music?
I had to tell my neighbour that their wifi kept connecting me and other neighbour's to it. They had no idea but thought their bill had been a bit high, thankfully she now has proper passwords and protection.
No bike lanes in my hometown.
Yet it's illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalks.
So you ride on the road like any other vehicle.
That's common. There were no bike lanes in my town when I was a kid. You just dealt with it...

Imagine getting arrested for getting drunk in a place full of alcohol. And for the graveyard thing, the person who made that law should watch out for a hunting more than a haunting.
You know I'm something of a criminal myself
Downloading copyrighted material isn't illegal here in Canada honestly I'm not so sure it even is in the U.S. Only distributing it for profit is (we even pay a media tax on all media storage to account for this). We have had VCRs and PVRs for decades in which this is their primary function. Also, steaming is technically downloading (you are just deleting the data shortly after you have downloaded it (which honestly seems like a waste in some cases).
In Italy you can technically get fined 500 euro for "bestemmia" aka cursing God. If they had to implement this Law we would be ruined, all of us including priests. In averange an Italian use voulgar words 55 times per day, not all of them are "bestemmie" but still.
WTF? What about those who don't believe in God?
Cuz many of atheists consider God as a dictator
I love Great Italia 🇮🇹
You know what? I'm good with that!
Well the birthday song isn’t copyrighted anymore since Warner Chappell lost the rights in 2015 and it is now in public domain.
It's incorrect that the Happy Birthday song is trademarked. Per a recent court case, a particular recorded version of the song is trademarked. The lyrics and melody, however, are not. The problem is that, until 2016, Warner Bros. religiously and overzealously prosecuted any use of the song, despite not having a clearly defined trademark on it (they assumed they did, since they owned the rights to the first publicly-available recording of the song; the song, however, existed for decades before this recording).
As stated in other comments, no one will do anything to you for singing the Birthday Song. The idea that someone will sue you for trademark infringement is just a myth fed by a bit of real life corporate malfeasance.
This video is a good example of why I'm registered to the Libertarian party. We don't live in a free country because we have way too many laws.
And no matter what you do, it's probably a Federal felony
Arrest all those with round hands without fingers and thumbs! It's against the law!

Happy Birthday song finally went to public domain in 2018, so it's no longer illegal to sing it without paying royalties
Or it was, until Warner snatched it up. Darn
Why did Warner Chappell Music all of a sudden own the classic happy birthday song
0:56 The infographic show just Rickrolled us all!.. Well played👏... well played.
Its amazing how we are often punished for breaking the law when most of us are never even taught what laws there are, that's like expecting someone to know how to operate a rocket without even explaining what a rocket even is. I know some laws are just common sense but there are some laws where you stand there like, that was a law? IMO it should be LAW that the government should teach THEIR citizens THEIR laws because otherwise can some people really be blamed for breaking them? Again I know some are common sense but there's no excuse for the government to not teach their citizens the laws and their rights, I shouldn't have to do something wrong or look it up to be told my rights, I should be told them from childhood.
Why would they do that? They would lose money 😂
@@BlackHulkGaming I was going to say human decency but we've long run out of that.
@@SkyAster125 that's sad 😢
Info: You shouldn't play Monopoly - the only game that makes people angry enough to call the cops.
Uno: Are you sure?
I feel like most of these never really get enforced though.
J walking tends too be distance too lights. I've told cops off because they tryd that. In Ontario Canada it's 250-275 feet from lights.
Me and my parents went to Target once, and a old person put multiple clothes, including the ones from the clothes section and it walked out scott free, and the security didn't even go after to check, and that was a long time ago. These laws are just bleh, and bland. But some are ok, but some also should let us have privacy.
Kids at school always used to keep yelling 'Happy birthday' at me when they knew perfectly well it wasn’t my birthday - pity I didn’t know this then, otherwise I could've got them for it! The teachers and support staff were no help, always telling me to 'Just ignore them'. One of them suggested saying 'Oh, thanks! Where's my present?', but that didn't work either - they just found it amusing!
Laws and rules are alright, but failed laws and rules creates corruption.
The US flag code is law but there are no enforcement mechanisms or punishments.

Yes, opportunistic theft at a self served checkout in a supermarket.

I was once in court for a speeding ticket and while their somebody was given a Jay walking ticket. The person wasn't in court to receive the ticket or defend themselves. The person couldn't attend because they were probably recovering from being hit by a motorcycle...I was thinking being hit by a motorcycle would be lesson enough.
Pedestrians always have the right- of- way😂🤣🤣. A cop almost ran me over once speeding like crazy into a hospital. I had done nothing wrong so the cop just kept going! To this day I think he might have winked at me & nodded his head!💞
In AZ it’s illegal to have a donkey in your bath tub or something lol
A glaring error about singing "Happy Birthday"; As of about 2015/16, the song is 100% public domainin the US & EU, and Warner Chappel has been told to refund all copyright claims since the ruling after failing to prove they actually owned the copyright, so sing away, just not round me, I hate my birthday, I'm not happy when it comes around.........
I think copyright doesn't cover someone covering a song. Singing a song is way different from having a song played in the background

Here’s a couple weird laws from here in the USA: In Detroit Michigan, it’s illegal to chain an alligator to a fire hydrant. In the state of Idaho, it’s illegal to go fishing from the back of a camel
This implies somebody chained an alligator to a fire hydrant and fished on top of a camel at least once.

So with the happy birthday song... Happy birthday is public domain, someone sued Warner and actually won and now it's public domain, so you're good to sing happy birthday
This is so helpful thank you
US Federal Court in 2016 declared the "Happy Birthday" song was public domain. Prior to that Warner/Chappell Music only attempted to collect royalties if the song was used in a commercial enterprise.
6:40 when I attended Asbury in Kentucky, the fire department was within ear shot of my window. The campus is so old it was still heated by a steam boiler and underground pipes. When the finally upgraded and installed a communal microwave, they installed it directly under the smoke detector. I can't tell you how many nights someone burned popcorn and put us all on the sidewalk while the annoyed fire chief checked the microwave before looking for an actual fire. It became a running joke. I remember one night during finals week, the chief came to the campus while the rest of the crew where gearing up at the station. He called them off before they arrived cuz he found a scorched popcorn bag.
God I miss those days. 😭💔

I don’t love in Alabama but when I was a kid I played Monopoly with my mom all the time, And I bet at least a few times were on Sundays.
There are many laws constantly broken
Actually you can sing any song you want in public and/or private, PROVIDING you DO NOT charge a fee for anyone to listen to you.
You simply cannot charge money for copywrited materials. That's when you have to sell permission and pay a royalty.

I know of at least one person who people hate at a self checkout lane because of how much they watch what people do. That or how much they call for backup if need be.
Heh, I live in Alabama. Back in my day, playing all types of games on Sunday was the norm. There's a basketball court up the street from where I live and everyone comes up there on Sunday to ball out. And of course card games and board games are played by children all over.

But why did they make it illegal to do those activities on Sundays?
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
