I agree with both sides. Some of these people really didn’t deserve to be fired for a tweet, but at the same time. I’ve had my fair share of stupid mistakes made on the internet and I’ve learned from it.

People seem to confuse freedom of speech from freedom of consequences. Freedom of speech is expressing one’s opinion and not being arrested by the government. A private company isn’t apart of the government and therefore can choose who to fire.

The problem is that social media gave every idiot the power to spread their stupid ideas worldwide. On the other hand, employers shouldn't fire people because they make a stupid joke that went viral...
The problem with free speech is that everyone gets to speak, huh? Don't worry, the marketplace of ideas ensures that bad ideas won't flourish because they can't stand up to scrutiny and debate, the issue is that there's this strong current of curtailing free speech. If somebody is correct but an asshole then that doesn't mean they should have their speech silenced.
Free speech is in fact being able to say what you want, whenever you so please, but free speech does not automatically prevent you from experiencing potential consequences that may come with that. Don’t know how this isn’t understood yet. So yeah, go ahead and say what you want, but if it causes harm or affects the people around you, you’re going to have consequences. Simple.

@@nefbee1743 Cenk Uyger was "forced to resign" (basically, fired) from the organization he co-founded for comments he made almost 20 years ago. Number 15, burger king foot lettuce. Also, with number 15, about the accidental tweet, I wouldn't fire him if I were that guy. It was just an accident. He didn't know it was on that Twitter account. If he did it on purpose, I'd fire him, but, come on Man.
I was thinking of Burger King Foot Lettuce too.
"Twitter can be a great place to share ideas"
That aged well
That was never a smart thing to say about twitter lol, it was always a cesspool of idiocy and racist comments
I agree with both sides. Some of these people really didn’t deserve to be fired for a tweet, but at the same time. If you have to question wether or not it’s appropriate to share something online, it’s better to just not post it in the first place. I’ve had my fair share of stupid mistakes made on the internet and I’ve learned from it.

Soooooo funny
My mother, in her infinite lack of wisdom, got herself fired by posting on Facebook about her manager. Her boss, the owner of the business and father of the manager, saw it and promptly fired her over it. That would be bad enough as is but I had to call her and scold her myself a couple years later when she again posted about her job at Sam's Club. Why do I always feel like the parent?

In the real world, some of these would be unfair dismissal and illegal termination.
I'm surprised no one took their managers to industrial court.
People seem to confuse freedom of speech from freedom of consequences.
Freedom of speech is expressing one’s opinion and not being arrested by the government.
A private company isn’t apart of the government and therefore can choose who to fire.

I loved the Kathy Griffith PRANK! Whatever happened to the First Amendment???!!!
I agree with your first sentence and half agree with your second one
Free speech is in fact being able to say what you want, whenever you so please, but free speech does not automatically prevent you from experiencing potential consequences that may come with that. Don’t know how this isn’t understood yet. So yeah, go ahead and say what you want, but if it causes harm or affects the people around you, you’re going to have consequences. Simple.
@@cocacao nobody is advocating for causig harm, the only way words can do that though is if you instigate violence. Sticks and stones, as the saying goes. I can't believe it's 2019 and people still can't understand such simple things.

Best advice. Get rid of your social media accounts.
The first month is the hardest.
At first when things like this happened it was a novel idea. That novelty has worn off and is now kind of scary. You can comment something ignorant today and be fired for it a decade later, even though you have learned and rehabilitated since then. And that is just flat out wrong, on every level.
Everyone is ignorant about everything, there are no exceptions to this. There are no humans that know everything.

Fired for a comment from 10 years ago ? No, not likely. However if you’re a public figure with a platform you might lose favor in the public’s eyes and that can hurt their pockets and potentially ruin a future job if it was disrespectful enough. For regular people it won’t get that deep. Not from 10 years ago.
@@nefbee1743 Cenk Uyger was "forced to resign" (basically, fired) from the organization he co-founded for comments he made almost 20 years ago.

Those are two examples just right off the top of my head. I'm sure they aren't the only ones.
No, it's unlikely if you're not a public figure, since your old tweets likely won't draw that kind of attention. But it's still upsetting that we'd hold even public figures to that sort of standard where they've had to have _never_ said anything stupid _ever._

You should be allowed to have thoughts. Even bad ones. The key is to conform to the norms of society, and keep most of said thoughts to yourself
You're allowed to have thoughts regardless of how supposedly bad it is. Cause if you dont allow it, youre essentially becoming a thought police and restricting a part of peoples belief. Much like authoritarian dictators throughout history
