- What if you tweeted something horrible and got fired for hit? Well, these people did! These people tweeted almost like it was a challenge to get fired !
Twitter can be a great place to share ideas. The microblogging platform has a large worldwide audience. It is estimated that every day 100 million people are daily active users on Twitter and that Twitter has 261 million international users.
However, as with any other social media, you have to be careful about what you say and post on Twitter. A growing problem is people losing their jobs over inappropriate tweets. Employers attempt to address this problem by establishing rules for employees to follow. According to lawyer Bryan Wood, “many major employers have social media policies that address activity on both personal and professional accounts.” They include advice about “basic decency” and what would seem to be common sense measures such as “be respectful” and “protect proprietary company information.” What can happen if you don’t follow these policies? We will find out as we examine our top 20 job-ending tweets in this episode of The Infographics Show, “Worst Tweets That Got People Fired.”

Problem likely wasn't really the content, as much as the channel. And frankly, if your job is managing one of the current-day main PR channels of a big company, and you can't be bothered to rigorously verify what Twatter account you're logged into before posting stuff - your entrustment of that position/task should arguably not continue, "just" on that.

FOH, you can't have employees posting tweets about other employees just because they heard something offensive. There were a multitude of other ways she could have handled that, but she decided to go the clown route. I have absolutely no sympathy for her getting fired.

Recently (like a couple of weeks ago) there's this guy who accused a food delivery rider stealing one of his starbucks latte. Turns out it wasn't, the barista forgot to make one, but he refused to back down. People dig through his tweets and found out his other insulting tweets and he ended up getting suspended.
Reminds me of the guy who faked that an employee wrote "Pig" on his coffee when he didnt
What that teacher does in her private life is no ones business including her social media. As long as she does her job well and she treats the students with respect that's all anyone needs to worry about. She didn't say anything bad about her employer or her students. She is allowed a life outside of being a teacher.

It's normally the other way, people on Facebook don't only add their boss, but publicise the place of work, link in the bio which appears on the overview. We got a memo a couple of years ago in work advising, if your account public, linked to the work company. Not to write anything that would negatively impact the company. Because this one guy was calling a girl slut and then accused her of sleeping with people around the office. Because his profile was not only public and had her friends on it, but he had on it that he worked for sky TV. He was fired because in essence it was bullying /harassing the girl from work. The girl took off a few weeks off work and was put on anxiety medication

Her boss, the owner of the business and father of the manager, saw it and promptly fired her over it. That would be bad enough as is but I had to call her and scold her myself a couple years later when she again posted about her job at Sam's Club. Why do I always feel like the parent?

I agree with both sides. Some of these people really didn’t deserve to be fired for a tweet, but at the same time. If you have to question wether or not it’s appropriate to share something online, it’s better to just not post it in the first place. I’ve had my fair share of stupid mistakes made on the internet and I’ve learned from it.
Best advice. Get rid of your social media accounts.

The problem with free speech is that everyone gets to speak, huh? Don't worry, the marketplace of ideas ensures that bad ideas won't flourish because they can't stand up to scrutiny and debate, the issue is that there's this strong current of curtailing free speech. If somebody is correct but an asshole then that doesn't mean they should have their speech silenced.

Free speech is in fact being able to say what you want, whenever you so please, but free speech does not automatically prevent you from experiencing potential consequences that may come with that. Don’t know how this isn’t understood yet. So yeah, go ahead and say what you want, but if it causes harm or affects the people around you, you’re going to have consequences. Simple.

Not on Twitter but Facebook. I used to work for Shaw cable and they basically police their employees social media. My friend was sent a dm by her supervisor to take down her status because it said something along the lines of “why are customers so mean to people. At first when things like this happened it was a novel idea. That novelty has worn off and is now kind of scary. You can comment something ignorant today and be fired for it a decade later, even though you have learned and rehabilitated since then. And that is just flat out wrong, on every level.
Everyone is ignorant about everything, there are no exceptions to this. There are no humans that know everything.

Fired for a comment from 10 years ago ? No, not likely. However if you’re a public figure with a platform you might lose favor in the public’s eyes and that can hurt their pockets and potentially ruin a future job if it was disrespectful enough. For regular people it won’t get that deep. Not from 10 years ago.

No, it's unlikely if you're not a public figure, since your old tweets likely won't draw that kind of attention. But it's still upsetting that we'd hold even public figures to that sort of standard where they've had to have _never_ said anything stupid _ever._

A couple of these firing is a little much. Like " Me likey broke girls" it wasn't derogatory but it was accidentally posted on the company's account. It wasn't that horrible. It's actually kinda funny 😂. But firing him is a little much.
