Cats are much better against mice. Snakes would've been far better for keeping the rat population down on those islands.
Calling this man an idiot is unfair. All we really know are the things he did that others, perched on their high branches, thought were odd. Yes, he was an outsider, given that he didn't have the same advantages or education as his silver-spoon detractors. But consider this: he could read and write, which was quite impressive in the 1800s on the East Coast. Attaining an eighth-grade education was significantly better than average. Attending a grammar school-the equivalent of today's middle school-was an exceptional achievement for a child from a poor family when less than 80% of the population could read. So he was not below the norm for that time; in fact, he was above his peers. No doubt he didn't have the education of the elite he associated with, but the fact that he was able to mingle with them-even if they looked down on him-shows he had fortitude. No one likes being the butt of a joke, but being able to excel in that situation meant he was not a pushover. As for his so-called luck, perhaps it wasn't just luck after all. Not being an elitist with his nose in the air, he may have had knowledge or an inkling that something like the buy-back would happen. It would have been reasonable to expect some sort of buyout at some point. In a civilized government, efforts are often made to help those who have lost everything. Such decisions don't happen in a vacuum; they go through a process, and having his ear to the ground could have given him reason to take a chance. Coming from a poor background, it’s plausible that Dexter’s actions were more about helping those whom he understood had lost everything than making a buck. The same goes for the coal. He had ships (that alone shows he was no dummy) that traveled the world, and unrest among coal workers might have been well known to those who shipped goods. It may not have been as lucky as it seems. Regarding the bed warmers-that might seem like luck. But purchasing 40,000 bed warmers at approximately $1 apiece is a $40,000 gamble, well within the norm for a global shipping company. The same with the whale bones: we've all ordered stuff that wasn't what we thought it would be. He didn't say when he paid, but since it was pretty much a waste item, he most likely got a good deal. In conclusion, it's wrong to label him an idiot. He may have been shrewder than people give him credit for. Much of the ridicule Dexter faced stemmed from his outsider status. His brash self-promotion, flamboyant lifestyle, and unconventional methods clashed with the understated refinement prized by the elite. However, these very qualities resonate in modern entrepreneurial culture, where boldness and risk-taking are often celebrated. Rather than dismissing Dexter as an idiot, his life should be viewed as a case study in resilience, unconventional thinking, and the ability to adapt. He succeeded in a society that stacked the deck against men of his background, leaving a legacy that continues to spark curiosity. Reframing his story highlights him as a shrewd and resilient figure, one who was perhaps misunderstood in his own time and remains undervalued today.

This guy reminds me of Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions where he had to spend $30 million in 30 days and have nothing left at all in order to inherit $300 million. He made longshot bets, bought worthless stocks and even invested in an iceberg ship that was supposed to lose money but everything made him more money instead.
Oh I learnt all about Timmothy Dexter from Sam O'Nella Academy. I’m glad you’re covering him too. It’s such a bonkers story. At some point you’re thinking is he actually smart or just stupid lucky? Cause he got stupid lucky more than a few times. Is it all dum luck or at some point he actually did make a deliberate decision that was business smart? Joey Wheeler must be related to Timmothy Dexter if he’s that lucky😹
I believe Timothy Dexter was a very unpopular man. And tho he camed from a very uneducated origins I have the sensation his story has been exaggerated by his detractors. This is just a conjecture and I would love if everything happened as it was narrated and his whole fortune came from a very fortunate string of unlikely luck strikes. But I do know humans tend to ridicule their enemies when they get to tell their stories so I welcome the story with a bit of skepticism. Definitely would watch a movie about it.
@@aramisscabott6747 I made a 10 minute research into the topic and concluded that apart from the whale bones all other transactions mentioned here and on wikipedia easily could be well calculated business decisions. I was unsure about the coal first but then looked up the strike lasted for a year so plenty of time to get the news and hear about the higher prices to send a shipment. It seems he had some interest in the west indies so he must have some information on trade ships heading towards china to assume an interest on mittens etc. The cats are an easy one and the bed warmers also could be based on preliminary information where he spotted the opportunity. So I agree with your comment completely. Still I find it fascinating regardless of it was luck or talent. I myself couldn't sell a gold bar for profit even if I got it for free. :)

Sometimes I think karma is a real thing, like the universe is attuned to each person to give them more good luck or bad luck. I had an uncle who would win almost every time he entered a draw, raffle, or lottery; be it $5 or $1,000. My whole extended family was always saying "I don't know how he does it, he never loses." Meanwhile I've never won a draw/raffle/lottery and my life has been unending health catastrophes.

Considering his past record I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt: genuine stupidity that payed off in spades.

This guy is no idiot,he is what we call a drug dealer and these idiotic money making scenes were to explain were all his money came from, everything was bought for next to nothing ,the drugs were stashed inside or on his ships and he sold the product to the buyer, typical drug dealers way of make his cash legal and transportable.
Considering his behaviour in tipping this was when cocaine really took off
This guy reminds me of Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions where he had to spend $30 million in 30 days and have nothing left at all in order to inherit $300 million. He made longshot bets, bought worthless stocks and even invested in an iceberg ship that was supposed to lose money but everything made him more money instead.
All he had to do was invest in woke marvel and he would have lost the lot
That intro was fucking insane, immediately hooked me
Oh I learnt all about Timmothy Dexter from Sam O'Nella Academy.

As someone who just recently started this weird journey (i.e. RUclips), I am getting more and more amazed by your videos. The script is one thing - doing research, putting it nicely together (a little joke here and there, a bit of sarcasm, etc. ... - which is not to say, that the script is bad, quite the opposite, in my videos I am trying a similar style - a 'casual talk' and I really like this kind of script style - it feels engaging and is just fun listen to)

15:45 - central heating did exist at the time in 2 forms.
1: the bricks of the central chimney were exposed and would radiate heat to the upper floors.
2: small holes were cut into the floors of each room and grates were placed over them. A coal or wood furnace was placed in the basement, heating the entire basement, utilizing convection to heat the upper floors.
