That folks is just how it is to fly a weight shift trike, the fact that its extra bumpy makes it all the more real for the viewers. Your handling and landings were excellent in my humble view.
Thanks for the video - just seen this as I am thinking of learning to fly a trike and have been trawling the 'net recently. Your video and comments are very helpful to me in terms of understanding the way they handle.
Hi Nigel. Due to their larger wing surface area, trikes will always feel turbulence more than other aircraft. As you build experience and start to go solo you'll learn what days make the best flying. For me that's about the only negative with trikes. The positives far out way the negatives. They really are like riding a motorbike in the sky and so much fun.
Thanks for postings, tough day at the airfield, you did great. The pucker factor must of bin all the time, I hate that kind Of flying, I usually give up a long time before you did. Thanks for the ride along......👍 😊 🤗
I had a friend who got “go home itis “ and he fought strong turbulence for an hour and a half, passing several airfields on the way. Unfortunately in such an exhausting flight he was too tired to control the aircraft through wind shear and low level turbulence he crashed. He did not survive. Since then we have made every effort to give it away before getting beyond our limits.
One of my biggest concerns is being miles away from home in strong turbulence. When it happens you do get tired quickly. It saps your energy and you begin to look for shortcuts. It makes reading aviation charts difficult as well. Thanks for sharing. Sadly we can all learn from other people's experiences.
I encountered this amount of turbulence on a couple of flights. My first time i thought it was fun...for about 5 minutes, then it became very tiring and a pain in the butt. Didn't have trouble landing, just the amount of constant corrections to stay on course made me feel like i benched 200kg for a few hours.
God!, Ive been flying for at least 15 years, when ever i encounter this level of turbulance i simply ditch it into the water and call it a day...as we call it in the BIZZnesss PULLY A SULLY
Been flying various Airborne Trikes since '99. Great job maintaining runway heading during departure and landing. Flying in that type of turbulence isn't done for joy, it's done to keep skills sharp..lol
Hi. You're probably right although I'm a little surprised more people dont fly them in general. As every year goes by there seems less and less. Yet it seems to me to be the most economical way to fly and definitely the most fun. Thanks for joining the channel.
@@carrotsandrunning I'm inclined to agree. I believe they're the cheapest form of aviation and also the most fun. However there seems to be so few instructors these days compared to years gone by. Also the price for new machines has escalated considerably when compared to secondhand ones.
Hi Sara. Agree. Later videos I moved away from the helmet cam because it was so bad. Unfortunately this footage was from my first attempt at capturing trike flying.
Since you don't have control surfaces only changing the angle in relation to the trike does it have limit how much you can counter crosswind gust when compared to a regular airplane?
I'm interested in getting into flying these trikes but this kind of turbulence is pretty scary. On your climb out, are you making large control inputs or is the trike basically swinging underneath the wing and you are holding the bar neutral? If you released the bar, would the aircraft go out of control?
Trike flying is a lot of fun so I'd encourage you to go for it. With this flight it was pretty unusual and not something I'd intentionally want to do. Once we discovered that it was a bit rough, my instructor thought it would be a good opportunity for me to gain some experience with these conditions, as he knew I didn't like turbulence. For that I'm really grateful. Basically the tip of the wing is being pushed down by the wind. This initiates and unintended turn so you then see me trying to counteract that. So yes I'm making large inputs. If I was to release the bar the trike would just bank to one direction. It wouldn't immediately go out of control. Also when we took off, there was no serious wind on the ground. So we knew that once I got close to the ground for landing the wind would also cease. That put my mind at ease a bit. That and also having a more experienced pilot in the back.
@@RobertBargent Thanks for your reply, I have done some GA flying where turbulence is usually "ridden out" and was surprised to see how aggressive you were on the controls. This would normally be a bad practice with a fixed wing, but these aircraft obviously handle quite differently! Clearly as your instructor is willing to fly in these conditions, this is considered safe and well within the flight envelope for this trike. It's good to know, as where I live the wind is often strong, gusty and unpredictable. Trikes do look really fun and affordable to fly, and if I get a chance I will be doing my ultralight license in one this summer! I'm trying to learn as much about them as I can by watching videos as I will have to make a trip to another province to do the training.
Make your dream come true. I had wanted to fly my entire life but had convinced myself I couldn't afford it with four our children and a mortgage. I was wrong. Trike flying is relatively cheap.
There are a couple of issues here that I am concerned with, not knowing how far into the lesson you are here when you get into the Trike, were your preflight checks already carried out? If that's the case, you are already showing over 200ft on the altimeter before take off. The other issue is the A' Frame is Bungeed to the front strut while the engine is running. Your indicated airspeed looks low especially on final, comparing it to the RPM ratio to speed, RPM is quite high, is the aircraft trimmed or are you carrying to much weight? Great video, well handled.
I particularly like take off no. 3 when on climb out the instructor says “Relax let go off the bar”. And he does, but you can se he doesn’t want to. A good video . Btw where is this airfield? It looks very nice
It's Rangiora Airfield near Christchurch, New Zealand. Was certainly an unusual flight. The approach for the third landing started very close to the threshold of the runway a thousand feet up. Normally I'd be another kilometre further downwind but couldn't on this occasion due to a lack of forward speed.
Let me ask you something why would fly with those when its windy? Those trikes are made to fly with them on nice weather there is no point doing something that is unsafe and potentially crash, beside this they are very safe to fly with them and funny just like riding motorcycle 🫡

Perfect landing, extremely professional

My arms hurt just watching this. Well done.
My best friend, that's a great video. I will always cheer for you in Korea I'm looking forward to a great video. Have a nice day.
This is why I fly 3 axis now! Tks
Amazing flight! Had no idea the glide ratio was so steep. Thanks for sharing this. :)
That definitely builds confidence
This is why you always get a weather briefing before flying *anything*.
Man that looks rough to the point of not being much fun anymore. But I guess you have to learn to fly in those kind of conditions. Nice landings.

Yes its not enjoyable being chucked all over the sky and worst part is you can't see the turbulence your about to fly through
You’re doing great can’t wait to see more videos !!
Fantastic video, Thanks

Wow , that's awesome .
Nice Touch and Go
Gotta' ditch the head-cam. Glad you are flying though. Cheers!
The first thing I notice was how strong your head wind was.
Thanks.

I dont think these are safe in the wind. Then again iv never flowing one what if the wind stronger than the thrust can you still land ok
I love trikes , Iam not a pilot, maybe one day, strongh turbulence could make trike crash ?
Great flying! we need more trikes in the North Island! Trikes seem more popular in the South Island , it seems to me?

The area looks pretty similar to the tidal Mudflats here in the Bay of Fundy Nova Scotia
But see, it's not. In fact it's a different continent. It's very far away. So i dont know if that blows your mind or what.
Nice Touch and go
If it were like that every time, I'd hate flying.
Good skills
OMG ... the helmet cam it’s too much... but the trike looks like fun!

@@RobertBargent - hey... I get it, no worries. Have a good one.

absolutely. Most of the time you get thrashed around by the wind. It's not unsafe, just really uncomfortable.

strongly suggest finding a place for the passenger feet rather than under the pilots legs (where they can interfere with pilots' control of the trike
What's the price of this flight sir
Good job!

If you want turbulence jump into a thermal in the regalo wing-it 1800 fpm

I have 4 trikes. That isn't fun air.
suggest letting the control bar 'dance' rather than fighting every little 'wiggle'
