Thank you so much, for caring. My Scottish ancestors settled in North Carolina and I spent a lot of time in the Blue Ridge mountains as a child. My heart has just been broken over the devastation there, & the loss of life. I know they will be able to overcome, however, and I’m praying and donating what I can to help. ❤
Thanks for thinking of us here in western NC! And for coming to learn more about our culture, which is quite unique. We're very aware and proud of our Scottish connection. There's a large and venerable Highland Games here every year. My heart goes out to you with the loss of Diane. She sounds lovely and very typical of the people here.
Born and raised here in NC (in the middle of the state) and still in love with it here from the mountains to the beaches!! What has happened to out Mountain Communities is heart breaking!! Helping them out any way I can from sending supplies to making donations. We appreciate your compassion and the wonderful experience you had ahd shared here!! Just know we are determined to recover and rebuild and make it an awesome place to live and visit again! ❤
Thank you for a wonderful tribute. I am a longtime follower of the NC outlander page and have such a love for Western NC (i live a few hours away in Central NC) It is so amazing and my heart breaks for those going through this horrible tragedy. Mountain folk are strong and will recover. It will take a long time but I know it will heal.
I live in Henderson county Nc. Another wonderful mountain community. The unbelievable amount of love and compassion I have seen here in the disaster is completely heartwarming. I am fully convinced that western North Carolina is one of the greatest places on the planet. Thank you for this awesome video. My prayers go out to Dianne’s family and loved ones. She sounds like a treasure to her community and I’m sure she is missed.
Thank you Shaun from North Carolina. Sometimes we are overlooked. We have terrible damage. We have so many closed roads. I absolutely loved seeing your coverage of your visit to North Carolina. I am a Scots-Irish descendant of those first settlers. We do appreciate your coverage of our unique state. My hope is to visit Edinburgh's Hogmanay soon.
@emiliefowler there are so many of us Scots/Irish who settled in that area in the beginning, Mine settled in Tennessee before that was it's name. Went west for the gold but stopped in Colorado to farm and ranch. My grandfather who was every inch the typical red headed Scot, refused to die until he got his last planting of potatoes put up. He was 96 and a tough guy who worked his tail off because he enjoyed it. My mom was the last of the redheads however. I'm one of the older cousins in my 60s and not a one of us got it. I can't even imagine enduring what my family had to just get here, let alone building a new country. When I think I can't about anything, I remember the stock I have come from, always picks me up and keeps me going. Almost forgot, my grandpa was named after Robert E Lee, the Lee has become tradition in our family now.
Thank you, Shaun. I'm from North Carolina, and I love my state from the Outer Banks to our majestic mountains. Huricanes have devastated NC for years. Hey from Hendersonville, NC and a MacLaren clan descendant. We are from stubborn and strong stock and will put things to right eventually. Thank you for thinking of us. 🇺🇸 🏴
Thank you from Winston-Salem,NC. You gave me a smile today. We’ve been busy helping and worrying about our neighbors in the mountains. It’s good to see what we had and hope to rebuild. ❤
Thank you for such a caring video. I live in Va. but on the border with N.C. We also have a lot of devastation in my area. I never imagined anything like the things I have saw. My wonderful mountains are in full recovery mode, with many still without basic necessities such as water, cell or landline service, electricity and food. Hundreds of bridges are gone. It is hard to tell many are trapped with no way out and no way to contact help. Folks with mules, horses, helicopters and all terrain vehicles are searching the mountains for survivors. Thousands of homes and businesses washed down the rivers. Farms destroyed and their crops and livestock are gone. Roads that will not even be able to be repaired due to landslides. The list goes on and on. But I do know one thing. We are a strong, independent and tough people. With God's help we will take care of our own and we will come out on the other end even stronger.
Thanks, Shaun. While we are dealing with the aftermath, we will rebuild. Please come back during one of our Highland Games (Loch Norman in April or Grandfather Mnt in July) and enjoy some of our hospitality.
Thank you for your concern, I live in SW Virginia, we only had minor flooding. The people in NC and Tennessee were hit terribly bad. It is worse than anyone can imagine.
I live in Western NC, by the Great Smoky Moi rain National Park. It’s been a long couple of weeks here. The community came together immediately and that part has been amazing. Winter is coming, so there’s lots to be done. It’s a beautiful, magical place. Thank you for sharing your trip and story. This is the first time I’ve been to your channel. Being without any communication for a week, it’s nice to watch a video and catch up on what’s been happening in the small areas and see. I guess your video popped up because of that. Im glad it did.
My Irish ancestor, who came as an indentured servant in 1730 or so, survived this experience, and when free, he moved with many other Scots and Irish to the mountains of North Carolina. I have distant cousins there, and I'm worrying for them as they lived in and around Chimney Rock, which literally is no more..
I have heard from a good source, that the people there are going to rebuild! I am Appalachian West Virginia! I live in Florida I know they will accomplish what they plan! Just know this that when the media spotlight is no longer on you, the rest of America has not forgotten about you! 🔥🤟🙏💪🇺🇸
I have been a first responder most of my adult life and have for well over a decade belonged to a major disaster response organization, me and others in our organization have seen some horrific disasters but other than the quake in Haiti this disaster in North Carolina may top them all. All the terrible rumors you are hearing are true, it is really really bad.
Oh Shaun, I remember that trip you showed us and how you had so much awe for the beauty of North Carolina. I think you were perhaps the first international person to FINALLY film themselves in the actual countryside of the country, most foreigners stayed closer to the cities, but that trip showed there was more to the US that so many have missed. I remember how happy I was that you got to participate in an event that holds Scotland and the US close in the history ties they shared. And of course it was someone from North Carolina who open their homes to you and gave you that quintessential Southern hospitality, that area is blessed with kind hearted folk which makes it horrible to see what happened to their homes and community. Really hope Diana wasn’t impacted by this hurricane and that she is resting peacefully. This video was a beautiful tribute to someone who had a deeper impact to show through your eyes Shaun the magnitude of our country while celebrating our lineage and heritage. It got me curious to know what people actually knew of the US, and see what they are learning about. Everyone in that area is likely hit hard, so to have a video to dedicate the wholesomeness of just extending out to a person can have a bigger impact than one would think, especially during the years a lot of countries seem to have resented us, it took two people to help change that. Rip Diane.
Im in central florida, please pray for us as Hurricane Milton comes thru here this week. We have a mobile home and we are evacuating to further away...please pray we have a home to come back to
I feel like WNC just received a love letter from Scotland.Thank you. Leatherwood Mountain Resort is part of my community. I wonder if Diana Gabaldon had any idea of the people who would connect because of her books. I think the Fraser motto, Je suis prest, fits most of the mountain people in WNC, for they are ready. Whatever comes. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. I hope your trip to the desert is a good one, and if you will be traveling through Arizona, you might run across my favorite author. Safe travels.
Thank you Shaun. I’m here in Asheville, NC. and appreciate the words of support greatly. We will rebuild. As much as I love my mountains, I greatly enjoy the desert. I think you will too. Safe travels.
Great memories. A good charity to support, who is headquartered in the area and run by Franklin Graham (son of Rev. Billy Graham) is Samaritan's Purse. They've been on the ground since the beginning.
We're ancient McBeth's from Skye - that settled in Ashe Co. NC. The chimney of the old home place still stands. We don't live there these days, but these are our people.
It’s not just the western side. The whole mountain area. My son’s town was hit badly as well. He is okay. Thank you for this video showing some happy times. My condolences for the loss of Diane. May she rest in peace.
I'm in NC and thankfully we missed most of the damage just trees down and power outages, but most of the places I grew up going to are just gone. Chimney Rock, Lake Lure for the movie, last of the Mohicans and Dirty Dancing were filmed are just gone Asheville, Brown Mountain, and Swannanoa or just gone, but our people are a strong lot and they will come back stronger than ever! North Carolina strong!
❤❤ I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, Shaun. May Diane's memory be a blessing to you and her family and Light Perpetual shine upon her soul. Hugs to you and Mariella from the Texas Hill Country. 🫂❤️🙏
I'm in Georgia. Helene was supposed to rip through my town but thankfully I just got missed. Because it was supposed to go right through my apartment. But God help those who weren't so lucky!
I'm from Georgia, and all of my Scottish (quite a number) and most of my Welsh ancestors settled in NC initially.I feel a very close connection to Scotland. My grandmother was a McDonald, but the list of Scottish names to which I'm connected is seemingly endless. Thank you for your concern for those affected by the hurricane.❤
My favorite clip from your North Carolina video series was the one of you walking to the lodge with the realization that wild bears just kind of room anywhere they want to in Western North Carolina. It is very different being in the wilds and seeing bears and snakes are certainly part of that experience. One of the great things about America is that we don’t wait on our government to fix things. The mountain people are rising again and neighbors are helping neighbors dig out, which is wonderful to see. Many people that I know are headed out there, including myself to help with the recovery. It will be years before the roads are fixed I know they will find a way through this.
Ah, Shaun, you were in my happy place. I grew up in Appalachia about two hours southwest of Fraser Ridge (40 miles east of Asheville). My family still lives there. I have Scots ancestors on both sides of my family, mixed in with a fair bit of Irish and a bit of Native American and Dutch. I’m so saddened by what has happened to my mountains. Thank you for your tribute.
I am from WNC, Reems Creek - Beech Community. It is devastating to see the damage. Please don't forget about us, it will take a very very long time to rebuild the whole area.
This is the coolest video I have ever seen! I live here is Western NC. Have grown being apart of the Highland Games since childhood because of my Scottish ancestors. I can tell you my lineage all the way back to the mother land of Scotland. I have such a connection to Scotland and my cousins! I am from clan Donald! McDonald/McNair! I’m in Canton, NC. We were hit hard! When things happen in Scotland, it’s such a part of me too! I get it! Your video brightened my day and so glad I found you!❤
This was a truly beautiful tribute to Diane, her family, her friends and a good look into the beautiful land and culture of the people of Appalachian North Carolina. Please pray for healing of this area following Hurricane Helene. It will take years. I'm glad you had the immersive experience you had while there and built lasting memories! The ppl of the mountains are a truly special breed in the best ways. I'm glad you got to see that for yourselves firsthand.
I absolutely love you and Teka! Remember your trip to North Carolina! It was amazing! I'm born in USA in the 50's. Born in California and live in South Carolina. Absolutely loved your Louisiana video too! Their food. What can I say! The best! I send prayers to Diane's family.... Can't wait for your next adventure...desert, huh? California, Arizona and New Mexico maybe! Take care!!
It is very heartwarming to know that people in other countries are seeing what has happened to so many areas of our country. The people especially in west Florida and North Carolina have had catastrophic damage. It will be months before they get water, electric because they have to get their roads rebuilt first. Many have lost family members, friends, homes, cars and all their possessions.
Thank you for this Shaun. I have lots of family and friends in North Carolina. Some are still without power and stranded because they live in the backwoods. Prayers for Diane's family ❤😢. Please continue to send positive thoughts for those surviving Helene and the new hurricane on its way 🙏
Thank you for this very heart felt tribute to Diane and western NC. I grew up 20 miles west of Charlotte in Gastonia. My family history is documented back to James Crawford who came over in 1748. I was taken all around as a child to cemetery's and shown where my ancestors were buried and to old houses where they lived and introduced to all the cousins aunts and uncles. Family history was very important! I hope to visit Scotland some day soon and maybe expand on that history and determine where James Crawford came from!
Speeding prayers to Diane's family and friends. Heartbreaking. There are no words that properly convey a deep sadness of losing a loved one. Shaun you made a beautiful tribute to her.
Thank you dear Shaun for sending your concern to the people of North Carolina; your kind thoughtfulness is well noted and much appreciated. I'm in Chicago, my hometown, but I feel the pain of those who experienced Hurricane Helene...and I'm so impressed with you, a Scotsman, taking out the time to send your regards. Thank you, Shaun. You're the best. God bless.
Just for the first time ever watching you and I am so in love with this channel already. Thank you for caring about the damage and destruction that happened in western North Carolina. Travis and so sad.
Shaun, thank you for the coverage and sympathy for those lost. Hopefully, one day, I'll get to meet you and share a wee dram with you. From one Scotsman to another, be safe, and God bless .
I've lived through many, many hurricanes. This includes a direct hit by Hurricane Katrina. Trust me, you never want to experience a hurricane. Prayers are needed.
Thank you for sharing. New sub! My Scottish ancestors settled in NC in 1740. My immediate family still resides on the same farm land passed down. 😇 We love the Highland Games on Grandfather Mtn. 😉 NC has been through extensive devastation with Hurricane Helene and we are thankful for everyone who has reached out and helped our citizens recover from this disaster. ❤
Shaun, You and all your viewers can help the people in North Carolina and surrounding states by Praying! It doesn't cost anything. I hope you will include Florida in your prayers as they have one of the most powerful hurricanes in modern history bearing down on them. I have roots in Scotland but it goes back to 1700s.
I remember Shaun, you and Teka staying in nola and wanted to experience a hurricane, but we got the cocktail instead. North Carolina is terribly overwhelmed and I hope rebuilding can bring them peace and healing.
Thanks Shaun! My family came to what is now America in the 1600s from Scotland after my (6th?) great granddad was beheaded in Glasgow in 1666. Mathew Paton, was his name. I grew up in Bat Cave, Hendersonville and Asheville and it was an idyllic childhood:) I now live in Charleston, SC ( great videos BTW) and am moving back to Hendersonville NC next year to live near my parents and help them out. It is a NIGHTMARE up there right now. My folks have been super fortunate in the fact that their home is intact. Finally got water a few days ago, and power last night.❤
I remember your visit to Fraser's Ridge Homecoming! They say that Leatherwood has only minor damage, thank God! Thank you for your care for the area and your kind words..
Thank you Sean. That was a touching tribute to Diane. I remember viewing your video when you first posted it. I visited Asheville in Aug 2023 & am so glad I did before it was washed away. I'm so sad about the whole area & the devastation. On a happier note, I'm looking forward to your next road trip! I vacation vicariously with you guys!
Shaun, I thought of you when I started watching all the videos coming in from the storm. I remember watching your videos on NC at the time you visited, and every time I see a bear video in someone’s backyard, I think of you!
A lot of us in Western North Carolina came from jacobites and others who fled British oppression from scotland, sometimes via Ireland and many from Ireland as well. Love sent all around!
I'm from Charlotte and met you at the bar meetup. 😊 It's a shame you lost the footage. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. I have so many friends and family in Asheville and the surrounding areas. Helen was absolutely devastating. The video out of the mountains is unbelievable. Asheville's main waterlines were ripped out of the ground by the flash floods and many will not have water for upwards of a month. 10+ days later, there are still people unaccessible up there because the roads to their neighborhoods were washed away...like the roads are gone. Supplies are being taken in by mules and helicopters. Some small towns were basically wiped off the map. A major highway that connects NC and TN (I-40) was so badly damaged that it will be closed for over a year for repairs. I worry for the short-term and mid-term economic welfare of that part of the state. They rely on tourism and the area is closed for the foreseeable future.
I am of Scots descent. I am 1/3 Scots and my family came from The Borders to the Blue Ridge areas…Tennessee, North Carolina, etc. They were coal miners and eventually worked the coal mines in Oklahoma where I live now. My heart breaks for North Carolina and the surrounding areas and what they are going through right now. All my love and blessings go out to these lovely people and their families. ❤
Shaun you must have come for The Highland Games!! Our mountains are the most beautiful in the world I do have to say. Thank you for the kind words about our awesome state.❤
Aww Shaun 😍!! I'm grateful for your caring and love for the people in my country ❣️. I'm in California, so, unaffected, but heartbroken for everyone who is devastated. Keep being wonderful! You are appreciated. I watch every video of yours
Thanks for the well wishes. It's going to be a really long hall to get the whole area back in working order. Here's hoping your new trip is fantastic! Arizona/New Mexico area maybe? Since you've already been to California.
Thank you! North Carolina is one of the most beautiful states I have seen. Some of the places we have stayed, like Chimney Rock, are wiped out. It is so devastating.
Watching this video brought a tear to my eye. I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, but I am glad you had the privilege to meet her and spend time with her and others. Thank you for helping North Carolina, but I actually live in Arizona, a place where I hope you visit on your road trip. Keep us updated with those dates my friend and I will meet you on the road, somewhere. Thank you for your wonderful videos, as I am of Scottish descent and I really enjoy hearing from you and a couple of others from the motherland. PS: if you need a tour guide while you're here, let me know.
A lot of the storms you get are hurricanes on the express route from the Caribbean, that get renamed before they get to you. Though to be fair, more of them hit Ireland, Wales and western England and turn east or southeast from there. More of yours originate in Canada or roll off the mid-Atlantic states and pass through Massachusetts and Canada on their way to you.
Thanks for your support. I live in North Carolina. Thankfully I live in the Triangle region, so we didn't get it bad, but it's so terrible what's happening in Western NC and they're doing so bad. We're trying to help them but we're so limited due to them being cut off because of flooding and roads and bridges being gone. I was just in Asheville at Christmas and a number of the places I visited have been completely destroyed :(
Our Mountains, NC side, received 30 inches of rain from that storm. The week before the area was flooded from another storm. The combination was more than the rivers and streams could handle. The ground, already saturated couldn't soak any in so it all was run off. There were landslides, even Interstates 40 and 26 were washed away in a couple of spots. Not just normal undermining but the whole hill side was washed away. It is bad.
That was just so sweet and beautiful, Shaun. Thank you for sharing. Hey! I'm in L.A., glad you're coming out, I think, to our Southwest part of the country.
Thank you Shaun. We have been watching your channel for many years. We started because of our interest in Scotland and Outlander and have followed you since. My wife and I have been to Scotland 5 times over the years. Hiked most of the West Highland way, many parts of Skye, Oban, the Isles and so forth. Love it and the rich history. I remember you walking in NC and worrying about Bears. I worry too. I was born in Gunnison CO and it is rare, but Bears to maul and eat people occasionally. We also have Cougars out west that have gotten more bold. One thing I like in Scotland is that one can hike and not worry about Bears or something that could really harm a person. No rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, or copperheads to worry about in Scotland either. Also, loved the mountain dancing in the video clips. Not exactly Scottish, but you can tell that it developed from Scotland. I am a Callahan. Scots/Irish.
I was just in the Scottish Highlands in Mackenzie & Fraser Clan territory, & went to Culloden. Was such an amazing beautiful place. I’d been to Edinburgh before & loved it, but the highlands were just magical!
Thank you, Shaun. I live in the mountains of North Carolina, and it was wrecked. We are OK, and others have suffered much more than my wife and I have. We Ulster Scots are taking care of each other, but appreciate so much the kind assistance of so many outside our area.

I'm just south of you. We did not get it as bad as y'all did. Praying for all of you in and around Asheville and further afield!
Thx for the love. We've lost a lot of people.
Send prayers to Florida as well Shaun.
My sons home had major flooding from Helene and now Milton is barreling towards them as a Cat 5.
#NCSTRONG
Same here, loads of Scottish and Welsh ancestors here in NC.
Thank you from western NC
Thank you for caring! Our southern states have been hit hard. I'm Scottish and Cherokee heritage but live in Georgia.
Thank you for sharing. Sounds like a wonderful experience with great memories. Pray for all that were impacted by the hurricanes.❤❤🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏
Great tribute to North Carolina and your friend, Diane ❤ 🙏🏻
Thank you, Shaun. From North Carolina also.
I get it! Your video brightened my day and so glad I found you!❤
What a beautiful remembrance of Diane & salute to gorgeous North Carolina. Though severely battered, she will not break!
What a lovely tribute for Diane. Hope your future visit is full of wonderful people.
This was a beautiful and heartfelt message of caring and concern. May the victims of Helene find recovery and healing. Rest in peace, Diane.
God bless.
Shaun...thank you. I was born and raised in Scotland County, NC......we love our Scottish roots.
That’s so sad 😢 you’re a great person. ❤ Florida here, pray for us.
Thanks so much for the love. The one good thing is the outpouring from our brethren across the US and from nations around the world. ❤
From the Foothills of North Carolina, just minutes away from most of the devastation, Granite Falls, thank you for your attention and care! 🙏💚🙏
Such a beautiful tribute to Diane. My condolences to you and to Diane’s family and friends. ❤
Shaun, I thought of you when I started watching all the videos coming in from the storm. I remember watching your videos on NC at the time you visited, and every time I see a bear video in someone’s backyard, I think of you!
Life is very sad. The older you get the more sad it gets because so many family and friends pass on. 😢
A lot of us in Western North Carolina came from jacobites and others who fled British oppression from scotland, sometimes via Ireland and many from Ireland as well. Love sent all around!
Very well done, Shaun. Richard from Columbia, South Carolina
Thank you for your caring and love. Western North Carolina was hit hard. We here in Eastern N.C. had very little problems, compared to everyone else.
Thank you - yes I have fond memories of that meetup. It was lovely to meet you and everyone else. Hopefully we can do it again!
What a beautiful video!!❤️😊
So sorry for your loss. :(
Aww. So sorry. You are sweet.
As a descendant of the Scots-Irish here in Northwestern Georgia, I love your content!!!
You beat me to it
I’m sorry about your friend Shaun. I’m happy you enjoyed North Carolina.
Love is cool but prayers work, send those.
I was just in Asheville at Christmas and a number of the places I visited have been completely destroyed :(
You can't forget Georgia or Tennessee. Was bad here too
Sean, your video production is top of the line professional stuff. Thank you. I enjoy it all.
It is bad.
Excellent video!❤️
Hello, from North Carolina.❤
So very sorry about your friend Diane. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Charlotte.
Thank you from North Carolina Shaun.
God Bless and thank you for your heartfelt video. ❤from NC
I’m so sorry you lost your friend Diane. May her spirit journey be swift and true.❤️
This house is absolutely breathtaking ❤❤!! I love it
Thank you, Shaun. I live in the mountains of North Carolina, and it was wrecked. We are OK, and others have suffered much more than my wife and I have. We Ulster Scots are taking care of each other, but appreciate so much the kind assistance of so many outside our area.
To Diane 🙏🏼💔❤️
