Ishido does not want to kill Mariko. He wants her confined and neutralized (likely by Ochiba’s instruction). Mariko knew this in the end and that’s why she sacrificed herself, it completely undermines Ishido’s position (which Ochiba mentioned earlier). Mariko was ready to die at every point. She’s a real one.
@@Daniel_Takeda Ishido wanted her taken away and captured, then he could say she got captured as she tried to escape outside the castle. She would have been released weeks later after Ishida defeated Toranaga. However, the plan went tits up and now Ishida is fucked
@@Daniel_Takeda The reason why I said it wouldn't be hard for Ishido to deny things. He could easily have claimed other rival families wanted her captured and he would have said she was captured after she escaped the Castle. She could also have easily have been held captive during this time for a few weeks and nothing she could have done. The Ninjas who attacked tried to carry her off alive. They had no intention of killing her and neither did Ishido. But it went wrong
Her poem, (true story) is what took the governor of shizuoka led his resignation last week.. descendants of Gracia (mariko) was so upset that her poem was used politically recently and set an outraged nationwide.
Today, 400 years after that time. Her descendants exist. Her descendants famously expressed outrage when a politician who recently resigned in disgrace quoted her Death Poems
Note that when John asks Yoshi to help him barricade the door, Yoshi declines. He's part of the kidnapping attempt and still wants to see it pulled off.
Toranaga made a loose loose situtation for Ishido. If she leaves then the hostage will be able to leave, if she dies then there will be revolt from the regents. He has contigency plans for everything, whether Mariko dies or not, Ishido is already done. Ishido make it worse by trying to kidnap her lol, now with her death Ishido will be seen as a killer and loose many support.
So, in the novel, it is said that Yabushige has connections to the Amida Tong, an elite fanatic cult of assassins/shinobi. The favor Ishido asks of Yabushige, is to contact the Amida Tong, to not kill, but neutralize Mariko by kidnapping her, most likely to keep her isolated, so that she can no longer rile up the nobles. Historically, Ishida (Ishido) Mitsunari does attempt to take Hosokowa Gracia (Mariko) hostage in Osaka, but rather than allow herself to be captured, it is said that she had one of her retainers kill her (Due to her religious beliefs) before setting fire to the castle and committing seppuku himself afterwards. This FIRMLY plants A LOT of support for Tokugawa (Toranaga) against Ishida (Ishido), culiminating in what is to come.
The line in the poem in the great hall does have meaning, and everyone there understood it, Ochiba-no-kata translates to Lady in the room of the fallen leaves
on a side note, you are the first reactors so far that got the fact that there was a specific communication between Mariko and Ochiba that only they are aware of. Mad props.
Unfortunately they missed the ultimatum memo from Ishido to Yabushige. Service to avoid death. That service was betraying his allies by becoming the trojan horse... to capture Mariko and kill the rest.
We have become so used to Marvel-style story cliches that a story that doesn't hit those beats is mind-blowing. I hope we see more of this in stories for years to come.
Exactly. The way they were predicting what's going to happen next is based on a superhero narrative swooping in to save the day. the fact that it took them awhile to clock that Yabu betrayed Mariko & co is because Yabu was not presented as a straight up villain (even though he literally boiled a man alive) so their minds had a hard time processing it.
Ishido sent shinobi=ninjas to take Mariko as a hostage because he couldn't allow her to leave next morning nor could he allow her to kill herself either. Mariko surely undestandood this when shinobis attacked, so she took the opportunity to die herself by shielding others from the bomb.
99.9% sure she's gone. The real person she is based on also died refusing to be taken prisoner. I haven't read the book but it would be very wild if she survives in the book or show. Her death was important to the real historical events.
I swear this episode should have been called “Crimson Cry.” Anna Sawai did absolutely incredible work with the character of Mariko. I love that character and her portrayal. I’m super bummed to see her exit the show (presumably), but hopefully this means Anna Sawai is in basically ALL of the movies and shows going forward. She deserves it.
lady ochiba said if you let her die its bad and if you let her go its bad so the only option was to capture her so she doesn't die nor go, yabushige killed the guards at her estate to let the intruders in. it was rather obvious for me. Just a shame that yabushige only sides with the winner and he mistakenly believes that is ishido. He should have known after all these years that toronaga simply doesn't lose
Actually, Yabushige always play both sides. He came back to the compound and pretended he knew nothing about his and even tried to escape with everybody. This way, even if Toranaga end up winning at the end; he is still on the right side. Love him or hate him; this is how he always covers his a**. 🙄

Yabushige is what you would call a snake. He will constantly switch onto whatever side is currently winning. Ishido most likely used him as a trojan horse. The actor that plays him does such a good job at making you like him that you sometimes forget he is not the best person.
I really don't understand how you thought they were Toranaga's ninja. Literally like one scene prior we witness Yabu accepting the message that he is now in Ishido's service, action instead of death, etc.

You have to remember everyone within that compound are loyal to Toranaga. As usual Yabushige plays both sides… i don’t think Yabushige necessarily wanted Mariko to die… and it looked like they were trying to capture rather than kill her. Ishido was resorting to the “bandits” line to solve the “rock & hard place” situation he was in with releasing his “hostages” & not risking an uprising by outright killing or harming them. Toranaga now has the moral & ethical high ground to advance on Osaka… banking on gaining favour with especially the Church & the Catholic Regents to turn on Ishido. I think this was also Marikos reason to receive the Sacrament prayer or hymn from her longtime Priest & mentor.
She was going to do it dunno how he thought she wouldn't considering he knew she's been seeking for death, and that killing herself like that, she'd be giving Toranaga a lot of tools in the battle, i think her plan was to go there and die, so she could people turn against Osaka and Ishido for whats he's done, so in the end, she did what her plan was, now Ishido will suffer. That's what i think anyways, i might be wrong tho.

Yabushige is out there looking out for #1. He point blank asks Mariko what is Toranaga's plan. Since she won't confide in him, he tried to make a side deal to which Ishido accepted by allowing him to open the outer gate for the ninjas. After he secured the assassins, he still needed to "act" like he's surprised and sounded the alarm. Total scummy move, but also totally in character to someone willing to do whatever it takes to survive. The plan was to capture her alive and confine her in a hidden place and they can say w/e they want to the rest of the nobles. All they need to do is run out the clock for 2 weeks until Toranaga is within their grasp. But since she committed a form of seppuku to avoid capture now there's going to be a shit show once the other nobles ladies acts as witnesses.
Mariko has essentially guaranteed that Ishido not only cannot become Shogun for the people but also seriously called into question his oath and duty to Osaka as one who upholds the laws it was founded on. Very smart of her, he will be public enemy #1 and take total attention off Torunaga who will finally unleash Crimson Sky.

Toronaga needed the heir's army. For that, he needed Ochiba to understand that he (Toronaga) isn't an enemy. For that, he used his biggest weapons: Hiromatsu and Mariko. Without Hiromatsu sacrifice, Mariko couldn't go to Osaka (with Toronaga's guards), and by Mariko's words and push through the gates, she forced the nobles to take positions... and being close friend of Ochiba, the "message" that Ishido isn't a noble person, and marrying him would be a mistake. With Mariko sacrifice, Ochiba have to choose who is the right one to support. Toronaga or Ishido.

It will lead to collapse their government. Akechi Jinsai ( Mariko’s father)’s royalty to Toranaga was deepest, cuz he knew Mariko will be Toranaga’s secret weapon. Since our marriage he worked so hard for me and my little sons but not able to get back to old days. I have been feeling sad and miserable for a long time but Mariko reminded me I have much power and stronger. I can use anything and everything to protect my family too.
Mariko's death from Ishido strengthens Toranaga's position against the Regents. Mariko is a pawn in the long game for Toranaga to gain the power for the Shogun, as well as John Blackthorn (he just doesn't know it). Also, Toranaga is playing Chess while everyone else is playing checkers. He see's the whole board while everyone else is resting their eyes on just one piece.
Yabushige betrayed Mariko and the others. First, Yabushige stabbed to death a samurai wearing a kimono with the Toranaga family crest. Ishido was the one who used the ninja. Yabushige was the one who opened the door for the shinobi. Yabushige will be beheaded and exposed. They should not be allowed to die in an honorable way like seppuku. Yabushige was stupid. He wasn't a villain at heart, but he was stupid. Mariko's courage to have sex with Anjin in an unlocked room in the enemy's castle where all sorts of dangers remain, and then sleep together until morning is amazing🤭Both of them have no sense of crisis.😂
Like Hiromatsu before her, Mariko knew her part well. She knew she had to die by seppuku and incite a revolt among the nobles. When that did not happen, she made sure she died to keep Toronaga's plan on track.
Ishido’s ninjas were trying to capture her, not kill her. Mariko could not allow that. Her final words are extremely significant: as a samurai, she is formally accusing Ishido of her murder and doing it in front of highborn witnesses. She knew what she was doing.
There is no peace without war Ochiba落葉 is Nobunaga信長's niece Mariko鞠子 is Akechi明智's daughter(princess) buntaro文太郎 and mariko鞠子 fight and die for toranaga虎永 As a result, it helps everyone mariko fulfilled his duties as an official in place of his father. If you keep toranaga alive, there will be peace
Mariko had to die to let lords/aristocrats to see Ishido’s dishonorable ways. She also made a veiled insult while bringing this to light. Ishido is a peasant while Mariko comes from a long aristocratic lineage and she should not be restricted as if she was a peasant. She’s calling out to all aristocrats on the fringe to take Torinaga, another aristocrat to fight against a peasant taking power
i too ruined this episode for myself by thinking this was all part of Toranaga's plan, so i didnt feel the same weight of emotions of when Mariko was going to seppuku as everyone else did

buntaro文太郎 and mariko鞠子 fight and die for toranaga虎永
As a result, it helps everyone
mariko fulfilled his duties as an official in place of his father.
Dude, you are a terrible guesser! You were wrong over and over. 😂
I seen the 1980 tv series so I knew a lot
i too ruined this episode for myself by thinking this was all part of Toranaga's plan, so i didnt feel the same weight of emotions of when Mariko was going to seppuku as everyone else did
What an episode...this bit in particular...

Hi
RIP
For me the serie lose grace! I loved the Mariko!
Oh no, your feelings are of course more important than what actually happened historically. What an oversight by the show runners not to consult this little shit rag
@@f1mbultyr I didi ask yor something for no brain? dame it the screenplay, I loved the woman !!! goes to hell!!! 😄
@@f1mbultyrThis isn’t historical. It’s set in the same time, not historical.
Also, it means the screenplay did a good job, dammit.
@@thefirstbourne149 It's based on real historical people. Yes, it's fictionalized, but still
Yabushige he is double-side SPY
Yep. And if you look at the crest on the shoulder of the kimono of the samurai Yabushige killed, it was one of Toranaga’s men.
Mariko is the most boss female character I’ve ever seen and it was done right. This is how you write a strong female character ❤❤
