Blackthorn offering to do what he did for Mariko brought me to tears. What he offered was not just as a man who loves a woman romantically, but as a man who loves and respects his friend. Rather than thinking with his Western ideals (which would have made him want to stop her), he acted upon her Japanese ideals of duty, honor, loyalty, and sacrifice. He loved her enough to step in and help her complete her mission when NO ONE else showed up to be her second.

Firstly he kills the captain of his own guard. Then he lets in the ninjas, the tapping him counting so that they could kill the sleeping guards first before the others went in. I think by far the best moment of this episode, and one of my favourite moments of the whole series, is Blackthorne drawing that vertical line in the horizontally drawn stones. My interpretation of it is that he’s so tired and fed up of the order and reasoning of the Japanese society, so distressed and upset at his inability to impact anything in the greater scheme of things, all he can do is destroy the order and sanctity of a single perfect garden

I think it's also in reference to the first episode when he is talking to the captain general before the captain kills himself "you must draw you line pilot" something to that effect at least. Saying you must pick a moment to stand and have the conviction to see it through. For him in that moment he had to draw his line and meditate on it. The symbolism in the zen garden is one of standing as a disturbance in the complacency of the rituals and insinuations that both cultures are subject to but also after he decides to second Mariko he allows the moment and finds his place in being her support from the fear of everlasting damnation and to allow her to complete her duty to Toranaga.

The life of Akechi Tama(Hosokawa Gracia), the model for Mariko, were conveyed to Europe by the Jesuits and became widely known through printed materials (although quite embellished for missionary purposes). In 1698, the Jesuit opera about her was performed in Vienna. It seems that even Marie Antoinette, as a child, was impressed by the life of Gracia after seeing this opera. Both born into nobility yet tossed by the times, Gracia married Hosokawa Tadaoki at the age of 15, while Marie married Louis XVI at the age of 14. Both were subsequently swept up in major political upheavals, yet in adversity, they bravely protected their children, maintained their dignity, and, curiously, both also ended their lives at the age of 37.

    Hosokawa Gracia's death poem
    散りぬべき 時知りてこそ 世の中の 花も花なれ 人も人なれ
Flowers truly become flowers, and people truly become people, because they know when to fall
that's her death poem ... and the hidden meaning is to be your true self (real beauty) while realizing a death
in my opinion - Mariko sees through Ochiba, even if she acts differently, cruel, trickery, sarcastic
but Mariko has known her since childhood and she still is Lady Ruri who was once gentle and caring to each other in the past

48:53 Well said. Anna Sawais portrayal of Mariko is not only the best acting I have seen all year, it’s some of the best acting I have ever seen. Building on one of the most incredible, strong and complex characters ever put to paper, the show was able to elevate Mariko into new dimensions; The writers gave Mariko focus and stoicism, and Sawai gave her heart and raw, unbridled power. Not many people can believably play a one-man army able to topple an empire. What a lightning storm of a performance she gives in episode 9 and all throughout this series. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of an Emmy.

Yabushige is going with whoever he thinks is going to win. Here, he turned his coat and joined Ishido, letting in the ninjas to kidnap Mariko because he didn't understand Toranaga's plan. He's wanted to go with Ishido since almost the beginning of the season. Toranaga and Nabukado bound Yabushige to them by making him involuntarily look deceptive to Ishido. Mariko dying like this totally rearranges the politics, probably forcing Ishido to release the hostages because he insists they aren't hostages and he just accidentally killed one. Ishido/Lady Ochiba just brought great dishonor to their cause and Toranaga looks like the patriot who was going to surrender but now has to bring a (bigger army) to march on Osaka to avenge her. So now, Yabushige will probably switch again since suddenly Toranaga looks like a winner. But Toranaga reads him like a book...
I think the only person who surprised Toranaga here was Blackthorne. I doubt he expected him to stick with Mariko as loyally as he did.

It would be great if Mariko were still alive, but the historical facts are as follows.
Mitsunari Ishida (Ishido in SHOGUN), who was an enemy of Ieyasu(Toranaga in SHOGUN), tried to take Garasha Hosokawa (Mariko Toda in SHOGUN) hostage at Tamatsukuri's Hosokawa mansion in Osaka, but Garasha refused. The next day, Mitsunari went out to use his force and had his soldiers surround the mansion. When the vassals told Garasha everything, Garasha prayed a little, then gathered all the maids and ladies in the mansion and said, ``As my husband has commanded, I alone want to die,'' and led them outside. . Later, as suicide is prohibited in Christianity, the chief retainer, Hidekiyo Ogasawara (Shosai), intervened with Garasha and committed suicide by setting explosives in the mansion and setting it on fire so that no body would be left behind. Her death haiku was, ``Only when you know when it is time to scatter can flowers in this world become flowers and people become people.''
A few hours after her death, Father Niecchi Sordi Organtino visited the burnt remains of the Hosokawa mansion, picked up Garasha's bones, and buried them in the Christian cemetery in Sakai.

    Hosokawa Gracia (*1563 - 25th of August 1600*)
Mariko-sama is based on this unparalleled historical woman.
And here is her last written words.
    Her death poem:
    散りぬべき 時知りてこそ
    世の中の
    花も花なれ 人も人なれ
Only by knowing when to fall
    Do flowers become flowers
    And people become people
Hosokawa Gracia walked the short road to perfection - short, but not easy. She died when she was only 37 years old.
In her life, she endured burdens no one should have to bear - treachery destroyed her family, her husband was mentally and physically abusive, and she spent years in hiding for fear of death. Yet she emerged from these pressures as a diamond. I compare her to a gem, first, because her birth name, Tama, can mean stone, gem, or pearl, but second because of all the different sides or faces that composed her being, sides offering us different perspectives from which to view her life. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but no matter which of Gracia’s faces we choose to analyze, that of a samurai, a proto-feminist, a wife, a mother, or a Christian, they are all beautiful.

Remembering that the actor Tadanobu Asano was Genghis Khan from 2007... a very good actor, and very scenographic and caricatured here in Shogun... But I also figured she would die because of how Toranaga said in the last episode that Naga and Toda Hiromatsu have fulfilled their duties and now she needs to fulfill hers at Osaka. That was a huge death flag. But even then I was on the edge of my seat when she fought the samurai. Had accepted her death just as Blackthorn did. Was just as relieved when Ishido came. I believe that Anjin understood the pride of the samurai while gazing at the dry landscape rock garden with his fingers. I feel sorry for Westerners who look down on Buntaro. If you were in Buntaro's position, you would probably see it differently, but if you were to judge based solely on political correctness or superficiality, it would be because of Buntaro's drunken behavior and the way he spoke to Mariko.
In the end, Buntaro and Oumi end up living with the memories of ``I'm the one who killed them'' and ``I'm sorry I couldn't protect them.'' You will create something. To honor the thoughts of those who have passed away.
Toranaga is a strategic mind who first looks at the macro picture from a bird's-eye view, and then shifts his perspective to the micro to follow the situation. He is truly an old raccoon dog. Toranaga's main goal is to end the war and create a prosperous Japan where people can live in peace. At the same time, to achieve this, he himself must become a general. Samurai do not kill ordinary people indiscriminately. In samurai wars, there is a sense of etiquette (PRIDE), and soldiers fight against each other. The scene in the first episode where a villager is beheaded. That can't happen.
