True story- Frank Sinatra was going to tear up a contact for playing a certain club in New York because they tried to stop his close friend Sammy Davis Jr. enter the club to come see Sinatra perform. Apparently, the club owner was racist. Sinatra demanded that Sammy be let in and would not stop until they did!
That's a great backstory. More of that can be found on Netflix that has a great story of the Rat Pack in Vegas, it's about how they made Oceans 11. Great film from back in their day, on the strip etc. It's been a wonderful walk down memory lane when men were gagsters LOLOL and they could sing.
In Richard Gehman's long out-of-print 1961 book, "Sinatra And His Rat Pat", he tells a brilliant story when the desk clerk of a hotel refuses entry to Sammy by saying "We don't allow Negroes into this place." Frank was standing behind Sammy and replied: "You do now, I've just bought the place!" Frank was earning 54k a week in 1961. The average yearly wage for a US working male was 4.2k. There is also great footage of Frank and friends shaking hands with Sammy's family in the front of the stage at a Rat Pack show. Much has been said about Frank, but regarding race relations he was beyond reproach.
I think Sammy Davis Jr. is perhaps the finest male entertainer there ever was. A fine actor, great singer, and wonderful dancer. He could do it all. Check out his version of Candy Man, and watch The Rhythm of Life from the movie Sweet Charity, it's a fun 60s number. And Sammy sells it so well.
I love the challenge scene in the movie "Tap". You have to wait until about 6 minutes in to see Sammy dance but the wait is worth it, both to see him and to watch a bunch of hoofers having a great time leading up to his part. ruclips.net/video/5Zd6GnFCfck/видео.html
Dean Martin Everybody Loves Somedbody Sometime. The song that finally knocked the Beatles off of the top of the charts after like 5 straight number 1's in 1964
The first version Dean recorded was a slow acoustic version which I have always liked better. It was a last minute addition to his album "Dream with Dean". It was written by Dean's piano player nearly 20 years earlier.
There is a video of Dean Martin, Sammy, Frank and believe it or not, Johnny Carson singing together at a club. I was surprised by how good Johnny actually was. The song was "Birth of the Blues"
@@bgallagher8129 They performed a charity event in St. Louis in 1965-66. not sure. But it was televised live via closed circuit TV to bar and other public location. It was the 1965 equivalent to pay per view. Joey Bishop was supposed to be the MC but got ill right at the last minute so Frank called Carson and asked him to fill in.
pull up "The Birth of the Blues" performed by Frank, Dean, Sammy and Johnny Carson orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones. Takes place in Vegas. This is Live!!!!!
Yes!!!!! I was just coming here to suggest that performance. It’s a great insight into their stage presence and how fun they were to see live. I’ve watched that video many times.
Jay & Amber, you'll love Frank's "Summer Wind" and "It Was a Very Good Year"!!! you'll love Sammy's his versions of "Love Me or Leave Me" and “That Old Black Magic”!!! "Love Me or Leave Me" features him scatting!! Yes, Sammy could do it all, sing, act and dance!!!!
Jay/Amber.... Please would you react to "Singing In The Rain" 1952. Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and the amazing Donald O'Connor. Gene Kelly did all the Choreography along with Stanley Donen. It depicts a light-hearted look at Hollywood in the 1920s transitioning from the Silent era to Talkies. It's a Musical Romantic Comedy. I REALLY think you'd enjoy it. ❤🫂💃🕺😅🎼
Billy Rose wrote this song in 1927 and it's still relatable and entertaining. Billy Rose was married to Fanny Brice and their relationship is portrayed by James Caan and Barbra Streisand in 1975's Funny Lady. As music lovers, you might consider Funny Girl and Funny Lady for your movie reaction channel.
You should check out some of the videos where Sammy plays multiple instruments. He never learned to read music but, was great at mimicking whatever sound he heard which is why he was also great at imitations. Also check out some of his quick draw and gun spinning videos.
My mom was a big fan of these two and I grew up having the music in the house. I didn't appreciate them till later. Their voices are the instruments. So great
you must watch the show Frank put together. Johnny Carson MC and took Joey Bishop spot for that show. Probably the Rat Pack at their best. Dino singing Sammy impressions Johnny telling jokes. Franky hitting it out the ball park! A must watch. I believe it took place at St Louis in 1964.
The part Frank sings is a stand alone song. They change some lyrics to reflect things and places associated with the Rat Pack. This song is frequently performed with a tap dance. Sammy is a fantastic tap dancer.
"Robin and the Seven Hoods" is a fun film to check out on your movie channel. Think of a "Guys and Dolls" type musical where the Rat Pack plays 1920's gangsters during Prohibition.
Cool. Saw a clip today with Sammy and Sarah Vaughn that was ad lib and out of sight. Some performer of that era had a catch phrase "Ring-a-ding- ding". But can't recall who right now. Right on, Jay. Sammy is the perfectionist. So blessed with these pros. Thank you.
The Mills Brothers -100% agree. Paper Doll, Up A Lazy River, Basin Street Blues, and my favorite You Always Hurt the One You Love. Got my love for this group from my dad years ago.
I know how much you love the crooners of yesteryear - and rightly so, they were amazing - but may i suggest you watch Robbie Williams Live at The Albert Hall. It was a live concert/tribute to the old crooners and Robbie's performance was out of this world. His tribute to Frank Sinatra was a show stopper. Robbie also released an album of crooner covers called Swing when You're Winning. An excellent album
I have a bit of a special relationship with this song. Back in my hometown there is a Frank Sinatra Tribute Singer (If you're ever in southeastern Virginia near the Carolina border check to see if "Frank Sings Frank" is doing any performances in the area.) He used to sing this song with one of his best friends who was also part of a vocal Doo-Wop tribute group he put on with members of his church. He hasn't performed the song since that friend died unexpectedly, but seeing them perform it live does give a little bit of a hint of how Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior would have done it.
A duet that can't be beat!! The Rat Pack at it's best!!! Nothing better than this!! Dean, Frank and Sammy. Entertainers, singers, actors, dancers, legends and icons. Amber and Jay, you need to watch and review" Robin and His Seven Hoods", starring the three along with Bing Crosby, Peter Lawford and Peter Falk. A stellar film with a 6 entertainment legends. You won't be disappointed!
Another group who you might enjoy, especially their vocal blending are " the mills brothers" the song " you always hurt the one you love " is a great example of their talent. 🙂❤️
Sammy and Frank were the best of friends. Befire Sammy made it big, he was in a really bad car accident. He lost an eye in the accident and had a glass eye. Frank moved Sammy into his house while he recovered and paid Sammy's hospital bill.
Sinatra and Sammy's relationship was special and enduring, and they supported each other for decades through thick and thin. But I guarantee that no one recommended this song instead of Sammy doing "What Kind Of Fool Am I", "Who Can I Turn To", or "That Old Black Magic", and Frank doing "The Way You Look Tonight", "Summer Breeze" or "The Best Is Yet To Come". I mean no one.
I suggest watching a live Sinatra performance. “One for my baby” (live at the Royal Hall) is a mesmerizing example of how Frank didn’t just sing or even perform a song, he fully embodied it. He’s truly the best of the best!
Sammy was often in the UK on tv during my childhood and he always seemed like the nicest person you could ever hope to meet or be friends with, apart from his obvious talents. Such a great guy.
Whenever I hear singers of this generation, I'm always struck by their perfect articulation. Every sound in every word is as clear as a bell, there's no mistake about what the lyrics are! A lost art!
These old songs and crooners were so classic!!! I'd also love to see you react to a fantastic, song that you won't be able to sit still hearing.. A big band song. Sing, Sing, Sing by The Benny Goodman Orchestra! I think you'll really love it!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
You haven't heard anything until you WATCH Frank Sinatra/ Ella Fitzgerald "The Lady is a Tramp". It was a Frank tv special. He is so happy with her, she was his favorite female singer and she made him nervous because he was so enamored with her. You two should do a duet day like you do female Friday.
Hey guys,Frank and Sammy are great for sure! Another crooner you should check out is Tony Bennet, his catog is huge! Btw,Rod Stewart has done 3 albums worth of standards worth checking out as well. The Way You Look Tonight is a great choice!🎙🎶
Wow wow wee! That was superb. Please please please do a reaction to Rosemary Clooney. She's right up there w these two...in female version. In fact, she did duets w most of the rat pack guys. Please do "Mambo Italiano" or "Come on A My House"
All the songs I have heard of each of them, I have never heard this duet.....thanks for reacting to this, it is truly great! I lived through this era...
Thank you for playing the legendary duo. Sammy and Frank together were the dream team. Now you mentioned the layering effect used. This brings me to a recommendation of one of my all-time favorite acts Savatage. Probably better known under their alias Trans-Siberian Orchestra, this group has long been in my top three artist cross-genre. The song you need to listen to is "Chance" which has an amazing example of the layering discussed.
❤This is a great duo. Y'all would love Sammy and Ella Fitzgerald singing S' Wonderful on the Ed Sullivan show. It is amazing and lots of scatting by both.
I've been waiting for you guys to discover this track. I was raised on rock from my dad and pop from my mum, so I didn't really know much about swing music. That is until one of our most popular artist, Robbie Williams released a 'Swing when you're Winning' album and this song was on it. He sang with his best friend Jonathan Wilkes and it quickly became the anthem to my friendship with my buddy from school.
I love listening to this! The joy and love they have for music and each other is so apparent and infectious. Who could feel down after listening to this. To see this performed live on stage would be the icing on the cake.😄
Frank and Bing Crosby singing 'what a swell party this is' from the musical flim High Society is brilliant 👏 in fact the whole film is soo good (Louis Armstrong is in it too). Also worth watching - Robin and the 7 hoods, Guys and dolls
Frank Sinatra is one of my favorite artists. His catalog is legendary. Some other great songs you two should react to are "Learnin the Blues", "I've Got the World on a String", "All or Nothing at All", and "Witchcraft".
Two icons!! Nothing more I can say! Great one guys!! ❤ Jay I have to say this AGAIN… I remember when ur friend sent you a rock song ( gosh I can’t remember what one ) and you fought it with all you got!! If it wasn’t rap you wanted no part of it! I LOVE how far you’ve come !!! So much good music !
If you haven't watched it already, your movie channel should consider "Ocean's Eleven" (1960), which stars the rat pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford); and was filmed in Las Vegas while they were all hanging out and performing in the "swinging 60's". This would be the ORIGINAL version of the film, not the remake of 2001
Not sure if you've received a request for this duet, but I know you two love Linda Ronstadt. My suggestion is Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville: I Don't Know Much.
I have to recommend that you watch the video where you can see them dance singing this. Remember, shadows are a visual thing that copies whatever is casting it.
This a great example of the Rat Pack. I love Ocean's 11 (1960) but most of the jokes are topical to the time period. Also you have 3 great singers only 2 of them sing. And the songs are not meant to be memorable.
There were some in the day - or since for that matter - who claimed this was a "racist" performance (because the "shadow" thing, ya know). Sorry to even bring it up. BUT you guys are so right. This is an absolutely theatrical song, and goes to show that Frank could hit notes accurately as well. Of course, singing with Sammy he had too. AMAZING performance. Thanks, kids.
There actually is a video on utube of Sammy and Frank singing this song. There is also a video of Frank, Sammy, Dean and Johnny Carson horsing around and singing Birth Of The Blues which is a Sammy song.
When I was a kid, I wouldn’t listen to the older generations music, but as an older person, I like listening to it. Frank & Sammy were part of the “ Rat Pack “ a small group of their entertaining friends…Dean Martin, Joey Bishop & I believe Don Rickles were part of it, they were funny & always laughing. 😂 I miss them. 💚💚
HI GUYS GREETINGS FROM ENGLAND 🇬🇧 AND THERE IS A LIVE PERFORMANCE OF FRANK,DEAN AND SAMMY SINGING "BIRTH OF THE BLUES" ON STAGE IN LAS VEGAS!!! THIS IS SUCH A GREAT LIVE PERFORMANCE AND YOU CAN SEE 3 GREAT FRIENDS HAVING SO MUCH FUN SINGING TOGETHER AND YOU GET TO SEE THE RAT PACK AT THERE ABSOLUTE BEST AND YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT GUYS.
Sammy was also a quick draw/pistol spinning enthusiast! There are several videos on RUclips if you want to see/react to that. (Some where he is “blank firing” his Colt single action revolver, & some where he “dry fires” it. I only hope he was using “snap caps”, to protect the revolver from any damage.) ALSO… PLEASE check out/react to Sammy as “Big Daddy”, & his song, “Rhythm of Life”, from the flick, “Sweet Charity”! Definitely a favorite of mine! 😁☮️✌️
The Pasadenas, song called ( Tribute Right On ) J will be running out the blocks from the get go, Amber definitely right behind him you'll both love this track, a tribute to music over the years fantastic. ❤️😊🇬🇧🇬🇧
Jay, here's a couple of crooners for you and 5 songs by them - Johnny Nash - "A Very Special Love" and "My Foolish Heart" plus Lennie Welsh - "Since I Fell for You", "I Need Someone" and "Two Different Worlds".
There was a Grateful Dead comment in the last song. I think they should absolutely revisit them. Something LIVE of course. Love they stayed on cue on Superbowl Sunday and both songs so far have been fantastic choices!
@PHLCoffeeSnub That was The Copacabana. He also got The Sands Casino to become the first integrated casino in Vegas.
It wasn’t the club owner that was the racist it was the era in history where segregation took place and many public places didn’t allow black people.

Same thing happened with the trump hotel. Frank also let sammy stay and his home after sammy lost his eye and frank taught him how to dance again

I'll bet they don't know that Frank has a duet with one of their very favorite singers - Linda Rondstadt. "Moonlight in Vermont."
Dean Martin Everybody Loves Somedbody Sometime. The song that finally knocked the Beatles off of the top of the charts after like 5 straight number 1's in 1964

Great duet. Everybody knows how great Frank was, but sometimes people forget how great Sammy was also.
Sammy's "The Wham Of Sam" is a stone-cold classic. It is up there with Frank's 1950s swinging albums.
pull up "The Birth of the Blues" performed by Frank, Dean, Sammy and Johnny Carson orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones. Takes place in Vegas. This is Live!!!!!
Yes!!!!! I was just coming here to suggest that performance. It’s a great insight into their stage presence and how fun they were to see live. I’ve watched that video many times.
Please, please watch this performance! There is a full version of this show, but the shortened version will be great for your reaction. Tons of fun.
The flip side of this 45 was Sam's Song, sung by Sammy & Dean Martin. A whole lot of fun, too!!!
Also a great song
Jay/Amber.... Please would you react to "Singing In The Rain" 1952. Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and the amazing Donald O'Connor. Gene Kelly did all the Choreography along with Stanley Donen. They'll absolutely love "Singing In The Rain". Must be reacted to. Don't think they've reacted to any musicals besides "The Wizard of Oz".
And if they don't already know, Debbie Reynolds is mom of Carrie Fisher from all the Star Wars movies they have reacted to.
The best musical really, the music, dancing , story that is also really funny!
Love that movie. So many fabulous dance numbers in it and great comedy too.

These guys weren't just performers...they were ENTERTAINERS!!! First class all the way!
ENTERTAINS!
Dean Martin "Everybody loves somebody sometimes"
I love this song! I love the fact that my Dad listened to all of these songs! He taught me to love all these classic singers!
Sammy daavis Jr. was a child star. I hope you check out Sammy Davis, Jr., age 7, So cute, born to entertain
Good actor, phenomenal dancer, great singer, and all around nice person
I have loved Sammy since I was a little kid about 65 years ago.
In music, when two instruments (even voices) take turns playing different parts back and forth like this, it is commonly called "a dog fight". ;)
Thank you for doing my recommendation, it's really appreciated.
Dino singing
Sammy impressions
Johnny telling jokes.
Brings back memories of the time when old school show business was what we reveled in. Glamour, amazing talent, mystery. Listen to that orchestra!
I've always just loved this song! The back and forth, the topical references, and those 2 beautiful voices entwining, what's not to love?!
Wow thanks!! I sure miss the fun loving music we used to have!
The musical term is called "counterpart," and Frank and Sammy are doing it to perfection here!
"Robin and the Seven Hoods" is a fun film to check out on your movie channel. Think of a "Guys and Dolls" type musical where the Rat Pack plays 1920's gangsters during Prohibition.
Hit Sinatra's "they can't take that away from me." It's only 2 minutes though. His smoothest coolest vocal performance.
Thank you.
A really great rendition of this song is sung by The Mills Brothers --Me And My Shadow. You will love the Mills Brothers!
The Mills Brothers -100% agree. Paper Doll, Up A Lazy River, Basin Street Blues, and my favorite You Always Hurt the One You Love. Got my love for this group from my dad years ago.

Where's that tiger?
Sammy and Frank were the best of friends. Befire Sammy made it big, he was in a really bad car accident. He lost an eye in the accident and had a glass eye. Frank moved Sammy into his house while he recovered and paid Sammy's hospital bill.
After I left home to go to college, my mother adopted a dog who adored her. She'd go around singing this because wherever she was, the dog was.
These two legends really loved each other
I suggest watching a live Sinatra performance.
You should check out "Robin and the 7 Hoods" on your movie channel. You get Frank, Dean, Sammy, and Bing!
Great idea! I suggest you do 2fer Tuesdays and focus on duets every Tuesday. What do Jay and Amber and all the family think?
You definitely need to hear Frank's version of "Ol' MacDonald had a Farm". Truly genius 🤣
Hey guys,Frank and Sammy are great for sure! Another crooner you should check out is Tony Bennet, his catog is huge! Btw,Rod Stewart has done 3 albums worth of standards worth checking out as well. The Way You Look Tonight is a great choice!🎙🎶
you guys have to watch "Robin and the 7 Hood" Sammy, Frank, Dean, Bing, ECT love this film
Y'all gotta listen to Linda Ronstadt "What's New" recorded with The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, who Frank Sinatra recorded a lot with 💓💓💓💓
Wow wow wee! That was superb. Please please please do a reaction to Rosemary Clooney. She's right up there w these two...in female version. In fact, she did duets w most of the rat pack guys. Please do "Mambo Italiano" or "Come on A My House"
She did a lot of duets with Bing Crosby
All the songs I have heard of each of them, I have never heard this duet.....thanks for reacting to this, it is truly great! I lived through this era...
Both of these guys are pitch perfect. I like when they sing the same note together.
This would have been epic if you had just included a video of them singing this song. The chemistry between the members of the Rat Pack was awesome!!
Thank you for playing the legendary duo. Sammy and Frank together were the dream team. Now you mentioned the layering effect used. I did a tap dance routine to this song as a young child. Thanks for taking me back!
Frank and Bing Crosby singing 'what a swell party this is' from the musical flim High Society is brilliant 👏 in fact the whole film is soo good (Louis Armstrong is in it too). Also worth watching -
Robin and the 7 hoods,
Guys and dolls
Frank Sinatra is one of my favorite artists. His catalog is legendary. Some other great songs you two should react to are "Learnin the Blues", "I've Got the World on a String",
"All or Nothing at All", and "Witchcraft".
Great duet! I would also check out Sammy Davis Jr's Too Close for Comfort and E O 11 from original Oceans 11 😊
wow what a great song, first time hearing it for me as well
Forget Candy Man - Sammy Davis Jr. - Birth Of The Blues
Also Frank and Dean Martin - Guys and Dolls
Two icons!! Nothing more I can say! Great one guys!! ❤

@@ginnys9831 Thank you. Wasn't sure if they had or not
One word, MAGIC xx Now that is when Stars really were Stars. xx
Love Sammy/Frank together. Perfect! ❤❤
Two legends and close friends.
A beautiful understanding of the past.
you need to review, the Rat pack movies. Robin and the 7 Hoods and the original Oceans 11. not sure if there are any more.
SAW THEM TOGETHER IN CONCERT. THEY WERE GREAT.
You should check out Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald singing the Lady is a tramp…..fantastic live performance!!!
Absolutely one of the best live performances!!
That was the best music ever back in those days... Great reaction guys...Keep Being Awesome !!!...
1960 at the Sands Las Vegas.
I have to recommend that you watch the video where you can see them dance singing this. Remember, shadows are a visual thing that copies whatever is casting it.
You guys MUST watch the movie "Robin and the 7 Hoods" with Sammy, Frank and the whole rat pack. It also has a killer dance routine by Sammy.
This a great example of the Rat Pack. I love Ocean's 11 (1960) but most of the jokes are topical to the time period. Also you have 3 great singers only 2 of them sing. And the songs are not meant to be memorable.

It was. Dean Martin would carry Sammy in his arms as if Sammy was the NACCP trophy.
There is a video of them doing this duet. It's wonderful. I believe it is from a TV special.
Awesome! I needed this one. Never heard it before.
Both icons
Great story the friendship and loyalty between these men.
Loving these fellas ❤😊🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I love this era of music.
YOU MUST LISTEN TO DEAN MARTIN & SAMMY DAVIS JR. " SAM'S SONG" IT IS GREAT TOO!
that was amazing.........thank you
There actually is a video on utube of Sammy and Frank singing this song. There is also a video of Frank, Sammy, Dean and Johnny Carson horsing around and singing Birth Of The Blues which is a Sammy song.
I love love love this song! Thank you!! I know what you mean about a video but this song is so full of life you don’t really need it.❤
When I was a kid, I wouldn’t listen to the older generations music, but as an older person, I like listening to it.
Sinatra with Louis Armstrong singing Birth of the Blues is a must see
This is just a ring a ding ding, baby. ✌️
You need to do The Shadow of Your Smile/Tony Bennett.
I really enjoyed this 😊
Sammy was also a quick draw/pistol spinning enthusiast! There are several videos on RUclips if you want to see/react to that. (Some where he is “blank firing” his Colt single action revolver, & some where he “dry fires” it. I only hope he was using “snap caps”, to protect the revolver from any damage.)
ALSO…
PLEASE check out/react to Sammy as “Big Daddy”, & his song, “Rhythm of Life”, from the flick, “Sweet Charity”!
R.I.P To Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis Jr, Still Miss You Both Always
Frank Sinatra is my all time favorite singer and him and the rat pack were always just stupidly cool haha
There was a Grateful Dead comment in the last song. I think they should absolutely revisit them. Something LIVE of course. Love they stayed on cue on Superbowl Sunday and both songs so far have been fantastic choices!
