  • I'm not a builder, nor do I play one on TV 😁 but I'm giving it a go... follow along as we build our own sleepout, using the relatively new NZ building code “under-30m2” rules, so no building consent is required. The plan is to build it 'somewhat' to code, and do it reasonably properly - while trying to save a few dollars and learn a few new skills along the way.
The building is a 7.2m long x 3m (24' x 10' for those that don't understand 0-100) building for my daughter to live in, so I can have my master bedroom back!
Part five: erecting walls, bracing and high-wind-zone strapping.

Nice progress its really taking shape. Where did you get the Ridgid nail gun? I see there impact wrenches get good reviews but never found a place that sell that brand in NZ. Take care

Hi John, I found it on trade me. Reviews were good, but nails are pricey. And yep I'm happy with progress, hopefully putting at least part of the roof on tomorrow

@@solihullsyndrome Ok good to know I was quite surprised to see you using that brand as I had never seen it in NZ. Looking forward to seeing the next progress on the sleepout

Ridgid power tools are sold as AEG gear at bunnings. Not sure why, but you can interchange the batteries etc

Do you mind listing what dimensions of wood you used? Ie for the frame and headers etc.

I'll do this when I finally get finished - I'll lay out all the costs as well. Suffice to say for now, it has been bloody expensive! lol...

Hi sorry for the delay. I'll be working out costs at some point and I'll do a breakdown of it - I've got a large folder full of receipts for everything so I will definitely break it all down...

    Why no rest room?

It's a legal requirement that there is no bathroom, running or stored water, and no cooking facilities, in an unconsented building here in NZ. So to avoid having the local council make me either consent it ($ thousands if its even possible retroactively) or tear it down, I'll stick to the rules. I'll probably make a small bathroom building somewhere very close that I can easily tear down / move if it becomes a problem, but the house bathroom is only 10 seconds walk through the trees.

Only for the insides... galv nails for that particular gun are VERY expensive here in NZ. Live and learn... but I was mostly done with outside nails anyway...
