Weatherby is putting out 257 Wby ammo with Hammer bullets. Check them out. Hammers give around 200 FPS faster than other bullets of the same weight. Impressive.
Awesome
Sounds like snake oil…
I‘d be interested in the real life performance of those Hammer bullets. They for sure are accurate, but some people on the interwebs say they are really erratic in game
@@DrewEdwardBacklas Just going by Weatherby says - but what do they know?
I’ve used Hammer bullets on deer. They are awesome!
Gotta get the copper fouling out of it. 257 is stupid hot and it has to be cleaned up after about 20rds. Roy designed it for an 87gr boolot that you can't get anymore. Welcome to the 257 club.
My 257 wby vanguard loves the 110 grain Nosler Accubond. I have also had fantastic terminal performance from the Accubond on a variety of critters coyotes, pronghorn, hog, and Texas dall. I see Weatherby has replaced the Accubond with the ELDX. Good thing I have an extra box or two or four in my ammo supply.
I bought my vanguard 257 weatherby back in the late 70's or early 80s.First thing I did was free float the berrel with the cardboard from a marboro cigarette box.front stock screw lugs to peaches on each side.then back where the two screws hold the trigger assembly and the bolt to the stock.I shot 3/4 inch groups with both the 110 accubond and the tt-x-bullet the x- bullet was 100 grain.Or better if I did my part.3 inche high at 300 yards dead on at 400 yards 6 inches high at 500 yards.
Looking forward to this one!
Me too!
When I was a kid, first learning to hunt. I was just presented with a box of ammo, and told to "Shoot this"!
It wasn't until I started reading hunting & shooting magazines, that I learned how different ammo, all shoots differently! Just as this episode proves!
"The more you know!"
Thanks for all the hard work, and your ammo
🦉T🦉
Keep that brass and reload some 100 grain NBT’s to the max with RL22. Deer don’t move.
Great idea
Those TTSX’s are some great boo lots for the Weatherby cartridges! My buddy’s Vangard .257 loves them , as does the 165’s in my .300 Wby. Mark V. In both, sub-MOA all day, screaming velocities and tough bullets that hold together and penetrate like a much heavier weight. Cup and core boo lots can grenade at closer ranges at Wby. velocities. That’s a nice setup too. The scope is a bit much for hunting for me, but for long range steel it will work great. Have fun !
Awesome, hey can you do a challenge with that 257 Weatherby against a 7mm mag, love all your videos WhoTeeWho.
Im glad the Barns bullet did so well. Ive been hearing good things about how that bullet does, so it will be cool to see how it works for you in your other testing videos, as well as hunting with them
I run the ttsx in my 300 wby and 6.5 CM for hunting whitetail and they are the best hunting rounds I've used. I haven't used them in any other chambering but I would without any hesitation.
I’ve had awesome luck with Barnes bullets accuracy wise. The 120 TTSX in a 6.5 CM shot better than many of my handloads with match bullets. I use the 300 gr TSX in a 416 Taylor Improved and they average slightly under 3/4” groups.
257 weatherby is a great cartridge. Deep down I really want one, but also want 25/06 which would prolly be better for the places I hunt honestly. I’ve reloaded a few 257’s for friends, and it’s a fun cartridge to handload.
Nice setup, but I will have to stick to my 25-06. Looking forward to your chrono tests and the long range stuff.
At the range this morning. Testing Ramshot Grand in a 257 Wby Mag. 115 Nosler Ballastic Tip. Norma Case. CCI 250. No problem getting to 3,505 FPS. It takes more than RL 26. Produces Spectacular Velocities.
An EC Tuner V2 will bring those groups in for this factory ammunition and do justice to this wonderful cartridge. Another delightful video as always.
For sure Minute of deer on all of them. And for most hunting cartridges that would be just fine.
But that 257 Weatherby Mag is putting out some serious ballistics. Only at 550 yards it hits the magic 1000 ft-lb and is still trucking at over 2000 ft/s. I guess it deserves a 0.5 MOA load.
Thanks for more material on the Weatherby. That is one very sweet rig.
Would be interesting to see speed data when doing groups. Will go a long way to explain any wayward shots.
Also good to know if your rifle gives variable speeds with a cold bore or not?
You are a darn good shot, no question. What can tighten groups when you shoot from behind a bipod is having a place to “anchor” the feet in order to pre-load the bipod, this can reduce the jump a lot. Maybe see if you can add an edge to the front of your shooting table.
Thanks for another great presentation 👌🏻👌🏻
👍😊 for different types of ammo not bad.
Interesting caliber. Haven't seen it much so I appreciate you testing it out today. Thanks WTW....I hear the deers whispering....lol 👂🦌🦌🦌
Always appreciate you watching!
@@WHOTEEWHO My pleasure!
Would like to see you test the Hammer bullets accuracy and old school water jug plate test.
The ttsx in my .270 Weatherby is lightning with whitetail.
Same as your led sled. Your bipod feet are not tied down. They’re moving around all over the place. You need stops on your bench to load up against then your groups will halve.
Hey mate, if you find your groups opening up for no reason, copper fouling could be a cause. I owned a .257 Wby and l found this to be the case with mine. So if groups open up it maybe time for a good scrub! Great vid as always!
👍👍
Super excited for this one!
I come here for all the NEW Caliber models, out there! I never even heard of a 257 Weatherby Magnum!
Legend has it that the 257 Weatherby Magnum was Roy Weatherby's favorite caliber.
Just read on the 307....Looks like it is Weatherby's entrance into Rem 700 clones. I like it, as Rem is now an unknown.
Everyone be making 700 clones now, which is a great thing
I loaded some 110 ELDX with Hunter powder speed was around 3380 and grouped about .60 and was soft shooting with no brake. Don't know how they will fair on deer but they sure did shoot awesome.
the .270 and the .257 are my favorite Weatherby cartridge designs. Laser-beam fast and capable of accuracy.
While scrolling through the videos, you had me at .257! That round also happened to be Roy Weatherby's favorite caliber...
Good video ! I will add though that in my experiences I've never had a rifle shoot its best groups with a bipod compared to a sandbag rest. Also I've found a can increase groups at times.
My 2506 ruger numbe 1 shoots one hole 5 shot groups.
I predict the Barnes will be sweet!
I'd agree they make great stuff.
The can on the end is messing up the natural vibrations and hindering the function of the floated barrel. Try it without the can.
That is very possible I agree
You should shoot a few with the silencer on then do some without the silencer.
I have shot a number of different bullets/hand loads out of my 257 Wby Vanguard. The 100-grain TTSX produces the best groups. The 120 Nosler Partitions come in second. I have those two loading for hunting here in PA.
I talked to someone at Weatherby a few years ago, re a recommendation for an 'all rounder' cartridge for 257w, for short & longer ranges, medium-big game etc. and the 100tsx was noted. One of the advantages I think is penetration/blood trails etc, especially at shorter ranges where ELDX and Interlock bullets tend to have trouble staying together (3500fps! ) and for big game.
That’s a heck of a rifle and cartridge!! I’d like to get a weatherby in 300wby. Nice new shooting bench!!! 👍🏼
Great video as usual sir. Keep the great content coming.
More to come!
I think your bipod got you. It was making some crazy bounces and the vertical stringing was probably the result
My Vanguard likes the TTSX as well. One caveat since I'm not a huge proponent of barrel break in, but mine got more accurate with every boo-lat after shooting through about 60- 70 rounds with a thorough cleaning between each change of bullet.
That basically is a break in, its not uncommon for barrels to speed up after 50-150 rounds. It can take some shots to smooth out and settle in.
@orr89rocz
I agree. I meant I don't make it a point to do a regimented break in. I just shoot and let the barrel settle in. I'm not doing a one shot then clean sort of break in on a schedule. I shoot 1 or two boxes and clean when I have the time or I see a big accuracy shift.
Mine was a 2 shot group throw the 3rd real thin barrel so i would shoot 2 let it cool then shoot the third round it works with mine i shoot 100 grain ttsx great for deer 🦌
All will be around or under 1". The best will be under 1/2".
👍👍
This will be close to my next setup 👌
A 120gr Partition is a Lightning Strike on game in .257 Weatherby !!! A Great Round !
I did some experimenting. With some tuning forks when I was younger and the longer ones vibrated the longest and the shorter one didn't vibrate nearly as long and settled down to normal a lot quicker. This experiment lead to me.Beleiving that the same holds true for a shorter 22 inch berrel over the 26 inch berrel for the different types of hunting I do would be more practical for more accuracy from a free floated berrel that doesn't vibrate as long. And I could improve the accuracy for all shots and follow up shots and with certain bullets and powder.have the same power as the older 26 inch berreled 257 weatherbies.not shooting hammer bullets with a 1/ 10 twist rate on my 257 weatherby vanguard.
Letting it cool is one thing but it would e interesting to see how things would change if you cleaned the barrel between each 2 shot group
I'm not surprised Barnes won. Shoot them in my Weatherby mark v 2506 with dime sized groups. Made a mistake and tried some Nosler partions one time and groups went south this was years ago. Took my gun to my gun smith and he checked my gun and gave it a thorough cleaning & took it back to the range with my Barnes 100 grain loadings i had previously had the dime sized groups with and amazingly back to dime sized groups. He said to never shoot lead core bullets in my gun when i had been previously shooting Barnes without thoroughly cleaning the bore to get rid of lead build up because Cooper bullets do not shoot well with lead build up in the bore. Clean your bore thoroughly and stick soley with the Barnes. After cleaning alot of guns shooting Barnes bullets group even better with a fouled barrel from a shot or two from a Barnes bullet. You can also call Weatherby for a torque chart on their specific guns & stocks because believe me or not that plays a big part in their accuracy. Cleaning bore, checking stock torque and sunglasses will lead to years of tight groups if that Weatherby mag barrel holds up. 257 is a great caliber but as fast as it's traveling, it's a bit of a barrel burner. Happy hunting WTW. Forgot to mention the guy is right about the barrel cleaning. Now go smoke some 🦌 a long way away ! WTH! 👍
Lead core bullets dont put lead into the bore they have a copper jacket. Its not uncommon for copper fouling to take place with some bullet types however including copper monolithics. I think he probably was refering to copper fouling from lead core bullets causing issues with solid coppers. Lead is soft and the bullet can conform to the bore rifling better. Solid copper is not as soft so any fouling buildup from previous loads can decrease clearance and increase pressure. Just have to see if your barrel is a copper fouler or not. A real worn barrel or high quality match grade lapped barrel is usually smooth and no longer copper fouls
@@orr89rocz Whatever the case, do not shoot anything else in a rifle except cooper bullets if you are shooting Barnes bullets in it. It can & will effect the accuracy. By the way my barrel was a Kreiger cryogenic barrel factory for the Weatherby super game master. I now shoot Barnes in all my rifles. 🦌 hate em'!
I love my .257 Weatherby. It is LONG. I think it is an Antelope gun for sure or when you have to reach out and take an animal that is a little smaller than your standard deer. Have fun. Ammo is $$. I buy a Box a month no matter what the cost.
This cartridge is ridiculous, my buddies ptsd kicked off when I fired it the first time. I personally like the 87 grainers, but I can't find them, got a box when I bought the gun. I don't care for the interlocks, but the 117 grain soft points are really stable. If you reload your 257 check out hammer bullets, they have variety of different weights all the way down to 70 grains I believe.
Yup. Have some hammers on the way!
Been shooting a 257 wby for 20 + years. I love it and I admit to bias. I state that fully, but .5 Moa groups with full power loads should be easily achieved with this wonderful cartridge.
117 gr at 3350 fps, .5 to .75 moa [from good firing position] and a rifle / calibre combo that shoots well off hand is a dream combo in my book.
Biased - yes.
Hundreds of proven data points in the bank - yes.
Wby mark 5. Macmillan stock. Scopes by meopta and zeiss.
Testing conditions provided by Scotland.
Good groups!
👍👍
as crazy as it might sound, the ttsx will do even better if the barrel only has barnes copper inside it. i don't know why but they do. try giving it a full clean before your ttsx sight in.
One sweet rig.
I will always love the #406 area code the best, but I gotta respect Weatherby for repping their new area code (my second favorite😉), #307.
😆😆😆
Those ttsx bullets look good on paper if they dont just whiz rite on thur deer 120 gr. ballistic tips will be your best bet and load them yourself great vid.
I shoot the Weatherby loaded 100 gr Barnes TTSX out of my 257 wby vanguard and constantly get .5-.75 MOA three shot groups.
The .257 Weatherby is a laser, and it would be interesting to test it against body armor, the speed of the bullet should do the trick.
You should try bedding the action to reduce the size of the groups. It is a relatively easy procedure on most rifles. I watched Cave Dweller 1958 bed the actions on his rifles, easy peasy.
Cheers from Oz.
Evening everyone
❤❤❤❤
80gr TTSX for the WoW factor.... Nice rifle!
Great interesting vid..awesome caliber...that was a expensive test...imho the ttsx are my favs anyways, Happy to see the results..thanks WTW...! ..I think its interesting how the eld's are stringing horizontal..hmm.
Great video buddy
Thanks for watching!
Fast and light. Ttsx is a winner for deer hunting. Other two better for varmint.
Feeds sweetly, that 307.
If you get the gun bedded, you might well eliminate that 3rd shot flyer.
Nice gun mate.
Get those blaze orange hats in stock. Hunting season is HERE!
Thx for showing the bullets.
Copper for up close. Lead for long range shots.
(Copper getting better at low velocity expansion now like hammer or maker) barnes lrx ttsx

Dag, that thing sure can sling a bolt ! It's going to be interesting to see the accuracy at greater yardage w/ optic.
When you shot the other day did you use the same rest set up? That could change how the rifle responds. Shoots good though.
Here's the thing with groupings and actual hunting. What matters most is does your rifle put the first shot where you want it IF you do your part under field shooting conditions. You know who misses shots? Guys who only ever practice from a bench. That's not to say those guy miss most of their shots but I've seen more guys miss deer and elk who really never practice from anywhere other than the bench or a solid tree stand rest than any other type of hunter. When I was young after we sighted our rifles at the bench we'd practice shooting from various positions you might find in the field and there was a big difference in the ease or lack thereof in hitting the target when shooting from a field position. Also, every rifle I had access to that would put the first shot where I wanted it never failed to put the second shot where I wanted it even if bench rest results suggest that shouldn't be the case. Why? Well, an accurate first shot usually ensures the animal doesn't go very far so the theoretical exponentially in creasing miss radius people love to crow about doesn't come into play when your deer has only moved 10 yards. An animal that has gone farther than that will almost always require a change of rest and a different angle if not a complete change of shooting location. So you're probably not firing a follow up in that case for a minute or two. Barrel cools down and the gun shoots to the same point of aim again. And usually inaccurate guns are labeled so because the third shot is a flyer. Two shots though are almost always enough for deer and elk, moose antelope etc... But, dude, what about a charging bear at 20 yards. Umm, big target, well under a hundred yards so far less deviation and the accuracy of the weapon is likely not going to be the limiting factor for actual accuracy in that situation. I'm not opposed to small groups. It's just that they really don't matter as much as people make them out to be. Get your first two shots within 2 inches and you'll be fine for pretty much any real world hunting situation.
You might want to use your rifle rest, instead of the bi-pod, bi-pod is great for field use &hunting, but I'm going to say,,for sighting in the rifle rest may be a better option..just my thoughts,,"& thats a nice rifle"":)
You pi$$ me off more than any other gun reviewer. However, I can't stop watching your videos. I really benefit from you content. Thanks for all your hard work. I'm conflicted.😂
🤣🤣🤣 appreciate you watching
Warm bore groups I think would be interesting. Or 5 shot groups to see if it tightens up.
You should try to get your hands on a regular Vanguard S2 in .240 Weatherby Magnum. I bought mine off Weatherby’s website. With light bullets like the 80 grain TTSX it’s moving at a good pace like your .257 and 6.5-300. Real easy on the shoulder also. It’s definitely a .243 on steroids.
240 wby is next on my list I believe
You will love it. Light recoil and the round looks cool. About the same as a .30-06 but with a belt and those weatherby shoulders.
I think the Barnes will do the best
Clean the bore between groups it will make the groups tighter just a bore snake is better than nothing at all.
It might be that having the different materials of the bullet makes a difference.
I had a Howa 1500 in 25 06, it was a great shooter. I sold it to get a Vanguard Lazerguard In the 257 Weatherby. But Now cant find a Lazerguard. Bummer
Alright, let's do it, and you are a daisy when you do!
Say when!
Im wondering if switching bullets is messing it up, and causing the other bullets to shoot poorly.
Its especially suspect considering you shot the ttsx first.
Id say clean it good, do a couple foulers, and change the order.
And maybe order a couple more options from wby.
As a huge weatherby fan, I'd hope it would do better.
Awesome 🎉
I guess the same holds true for alot of older rounds with less powder capacities or even more.
I think I need one too
I would retest without the can and see how it does then. The barrel may not like that weight hanging off the end of it.
I wish that I could get the 110 eld-x I like the way they shot out of the 25-06 they were one of the most accurate bullets I’ve shot in the it but they’re not available for hand loading right now
Dam barrel gets hot fast on 257 got to get u a barrel fan.lol.But for real u got to wait forever between each shot.$$$ not a cheap thing to figure out.
Hey Booty I'm really liking that Weatherby rifle that thing looks really cool and you've got some good groups with it I would like to know how many feet per second those weatherby's are putting out and also I really like that new shooting table you got that's a whole lot better than the spoil you were sitting on with that rickety table you had.
I bet those groups would tighten up with a sandbag instead of bipod
Nice! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks ✌
After each hunt or when the bolt don't cycle as good.
Put the muzzle brake on it and try it.
I’m not a hunter, though I’d like to one day. But, if your first shot can be off on a cold barrel compared to your follow up shots wouldn’t you want to trust your first shot the most? Considering you’re more than likely shooting off a cold barrel at the game you’re hunting? Maybe I’m overthinking it. And I could imagine it would be very tedious to shoot one shot, wait for cool down then shoot another to check for consistency. I’m just taking it all in and love all the content I’m learning off these videos. Thank you.
Short answer is YES 100% correct. ..longer answer..although "most of the time" it is not enough difference to make any difference "in a hunting situation ". You are not over thinking but it is good that you are using critical analysis. It usually isn't an issue though. You could in fact test the cold barrel first shot issue very easily "if you have the place too" by getting up every morning and shooting ONE shot at the same target and distance every day for a week let's say and test the results..very fun AND informative. Shoot once, clean, put up, repeat in the morning. Fun lesson !!
@@camwinston5248 thanks for the reply! I wish I had the kind of property where I could do cool test like these.
@@betweenthebars19 you are most welcome . If you do decide to take up hunting an get a rifle just find somewhere to do it,just get it zeroed in and go !
@@camwinston5248 I already got myself a .308 bolt gun and a .243 single shot. I go to the range for fun. The longest range I have around me is outdoor 100 yards. Living in SW Florida and working outside 5 days a week I haven’t been motivated to get out there on the weekends. But once this temp drops a bit I’ll be out there sighting them in. And hopefully eventually out hunting!
@@betweenthebars19 Outstanding ! Do it too it..and remember have fun.
I would love a hat .. I think I'd be the only one in Canada 🇨🇦
Not the only one 🇨🇦
Great caliber.
Either the forend is very flimsy or your action screws are loose. Can see a ton of movement between your barrel and forend. Definitely check your action screw torque . Could really benefit from bedding the action as well
Hey, you're getting about a quarter inch group firing one-shot groups😂
One shot would be a zero inch group
You should do the milk jug penetration test with those bullets to see which one performs better
Now Ruger needs to make an American in .257 and show Weatherby how its done! Still on the look out for how Ruger did after returning your .450 Bushmaster. :)
😆😆😆
The weatherby crown royal Lazer mark v.would put Ruger to shame or Remington or Browning or savage.Only thing is it's to dang pretty to take hunting.
120 grain nosler petrician works best.
I wish I had a 257
Maybe simply the difference between a leadsled and a wobbly bipod?
What's the speed on these ?
Fast af. Lol.
good shootin😮
Try a group without the can on the barrel
