I did kids TV as a producer for 5 years- mainly its because the technical issue in having five live mics and making sure the sound levels are all correct- impossible to set up in a live show.

Go listen to an acoustic version of 'Issues'. They clearly can sing. But this is an overly edited vocal. Yes, they are lip syncing, but its because they were trying to promote their first single. They want it to sound good.
