    Thank you for posting such a clear video. I have an 1892 VS2 Singer with the original bobbins and shuttle. Even my 82 year old father who is a time served hosiery mechanic learned from this. We are currently cleaning it up for me to use. I’m in Scotland so I don’t think our machine has travelled too far. New curtains here we come 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️✂️

    I picked up 3 treadle machines today for free. I have a B series from 1905 and was thrilled to see the shuttle bobbin. I thought to myself - I bet there's some lady on RUclips who has figured this all out and will stand in for my grandmother. Thank you so much for this video. Wow. You are now my Singer Sensei. I'm so new to the wizardry you people call sewing and every video before yours just confused me more. I had been attempting to finish my first "sewing" project when I lost the thread from bottom bobbin. Your one simple video on threading the bobbin which I had never seen done before, made it seem so easy. Chances are I'll be back for more. Thx😊

    My husband got me an old portable Singer machine, 1911 it says on the front plate. It is electrical and it sews with this metal handle that has to be inserted in a hole at the right, just under the wheel. It works with my knee pressing on this metal handle. I did not know how to place the shuttle in its place and how to insert the bobbin in it. Now, thanks to you, I know how to do that. Thank you so much for the time you took to make this excellent video to show how it is done.

      @@TheMasquerade I do have one other issue, maybe you can help. I'm at a point now where I turn the wheel so where my needle thread is to catch my shuttle thread but it's not catching. I've done everything correct up until this point but it's not picking up the thread. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  2 года назад

      @@samanthasparks6978 it could be a few things. If you dont have the exact year and model (VS2, 1889) as my machine, the you may need to turn your needle so you thread it from front to back. Or maybe turn it so you thread it from right to left (with the flat side of the needle to the left). Or maybe you havent inserted your needle into the machine deep enough before tightening the screw. All these things can affect how your thread will pick up around the bobbin shuttle.

    WOW, very clear video and very clear audio. I learned more here than in any video before this, on this subject. I am new to sewing machines and I am trying to learn all I can about treadle machines. I've never sewed a stitch, on a machine, of any kind. My bride use to do a lot of sewing, years ago. I always thought sewing was for women. But, a coupla years ago I came across a 1909 Singer 29-4 machine. I now own it. Needless to say that got me started. I am now hooked on treadles. Thanks fer sharing your time and knowledge here.

      What a great story! I've been sewing since I was about 5 years old. My dad was a Singer Sewing machine repair man and did house calls back in the 1930s. I've had all kinds of machines through the years. The VS2 in this video was my first treadle machine (given to me by my husband as a birthday gift). He knew I had always wanted one - but had no idea what a gem it was that he actually found!! Once I learned how to load it up and get it running - I've also been hooked ever since!! Have fun with yours!

    What a fine video, thank you!
    One thing that I think might assist is that if you start with the thread guide to the right, instead of on the left as in the video when winding a bobbin you might find your life is a just a bit easier. The cam follower will be in the middle of the "heart" shaped cam and the wound thread will more securely lock the bobbin thread onto the bobbin.

    Thank you so very much. This has been a life-saver. I have a Vickers machine which was probably made in the 1930s but it uses exactly this system. I found a manual online which I printed up and it was quite explanatory--right up until the lower bobbin threading. Very nice original vs2. It has the original shuttle!! I have the 1889 vs2 manual if you need a free copy. I have a very similar machine called the singer high arm family vs. It is not a "vs1" but uses the same bobbin as a vs1, and that bobbin fits in the same shuttle you have. Mine is 1886 and the 1st year of the new type vs. The big difference of mine is my bobbin winder and the spool pin area. I have no flat spot for the spool of thread and the bobbin winder will not wind a regular long bobbin well. It bulks up the ends on the bobbin too much as it needs a longer bobbin. Mine was also electric, but no longer has the dangerous engine where the hand wheel is. The electric were not uncommon and in my area of North America, just the horrible engine got upgraded back to a treadle after the engine gave out. Not many exist elsewere, but there are quite a few engine parts around here. So common they were in my area, I have two tops where you can see where the actuator was mounted on the bottom of the treadle table. Thank you for loading this video!! Anyone that needs a how to video on this machine I will direct them to your video. You have very good description and camera work.

    There is three ways we can guesstimate the approximate age of this Singer. Serial number, type of construction and the long bobbin winder. There is a small placard with a serial number on it in the front of the machine and you can see from singers own pages what year it was produced. What I could see it looked like *E432380 (might be wrong, my eyes are not good). Depending on the first letter with the coffin/casket type table I would guesstimate between 1924-1947, difficult to say without the first letter though. If we go with the long bobbin winder that it has attached to the front of it, then it is very possible that it was produced in the 19th century. I am not sure when they stopped producing the long bobbin versions for the modern round versions, but the long bobbin machines start from the 1850s. I might be wrong though, can anyone else see the serial number better?

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 месяца назад

      @@lenaevess this machine was manufactured in 1889. There is no letter prefix to the serial number 8667836.
      It also has a curvy "fiddle base" which only ran for a few years with the VS2 - changing to a rectangular base in 1891 - which also confirms this machine was manufactured before the 20th century.😉

    An excellent video! It's hard to find videos that are for exactly the item that you have.I have a Singer model 27 with an 1896 serial number. I was wondering if you might go a step deeper into the tension adjustments. I use 2 colors for needle and bobbin so I can see that the tension is right. My problem is that it keeps showing I have to much tension on the needle thread.That's a problem because I have backed the tension off completely.Thinking that perhaps the bobbin tension was to loose, I have tightened it as far as I can,and it still shows to much tension on the top. I have come to suspect that it might possibly be the thread guide spring causing to much resistance to the thread pull. Do you have any information as to where the guide spring should be situated when re-assembling the tension adjuster? ( I took it off for cleaning purposes and am not sure that I have positioned it correctly upon re-assembly.) Thanks for any help you can give.

      Hi Tim, I also have a Singer model 27. I'll take a look at it and see where the guide spring is situated on it - when I get a chance. It's tension is great - so I might be able to help, but it may take me a week to get to it (so many other things on a deadline before I can dig it out!) I'll get back to you. :)

    You are a breath of fresh air! I keep watching videos where the bobbins are round. I have a 1900 Faultless.
    It was a family gift. Unfortunately the shuttle and bobbins were lost in the move, but It is going to a repair shop this month. Otherwise the machine is intact. Needs a good cleaning, oiling, new belt. Does your machine have a de railer that protects the belt from stretching when not in use? I don't see one on mine. I will keep your video for reference regarding threading, etc. Very excited to use machine! Thank you for this video ~ Diane in New Hampshire.

    Maybe a silly question....How to end a stitch? Can you simply hand turn it backwards a few stitches to overlap?

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 года назад

      Not a silly question at all! You can NOT hand turn it backwards to secure the stitch. Turning it back will only make it skip a stitch or make a thread nest in the bobbin area. The only way to secure the stitch is to turn the fabric around and take a couple extra forward stitches. OR, if you can adjust the stitch length on your machine, you can adjust it down to the smallest setting for the last couple stitches in the seam. Same thing when you begin a seam - shortest stitch length, then adjust it up for the seam to a longer length. Not the solution you wanted to hear - but it's the only one with this type of machine. However, there are a couple old treadle machines that do have a "reverse" lever - like the "Jones" and the "Vickers" - both British machines. Hope this helps!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 года назад

      @@ipglance1 , do you know what model machine you have? Some have a knob on the front of the machine that just looks like a huge screw. You either loosen it out or tighten it as close to the machine as you can go to change the stitch length. Some of them actually have the big screw attached to a lever that moves up and down - I demonstrate that on a different machine (a Singer 15) in this video at about 1 minute into the video. . . ruclips.net/video/w8Wx589eCm8/видео.html

    Lovely machine, thanks madame: this video helps me a lot with my treaddle, long shuttle 1906 White machine. I own a hand-crank Singer too, in a nice condition, but the upper thread doesn´t catch the thread of the bobbin, and doesn´t make the stitch. Can you help me with this problem? Any advise I will really appreciate. (I apologize about my English, I´m from Argentina)

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 года назад +1

      On the hand crank machine you might want to try threading your needle in the other direction. You should also make sure it is the correct needle type, and that it is set all the way into the needle bar. If the length of the needle is not just right, or if it is threaded wrong, it will not pick up a stitch.😉 Hope this helps!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  6 лет назад

      Make sure you are threading the needle from left to right, and that you are placing the bobbin into the shuttle so that it makes the bobbin spin counter clockwise while you are looking down into the top of the shuttle. If your thread isn't coming out of the shuttle in the right place, the needle will not pick it up. Maybe I'll do another short video on how the shuttle should be threaded. . . .

    i have almost the same machine but without the floral flowers on machine but in desk like thing like yours ... my mom knew this machine i don't and she died in 2001. question is my belt is loose slips a lot from foot petal to to machine wheel, how do i tighten this belt? it hard for me to adjust tensions when the foot petal barely works ...

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 года назад +1

      Good question! You need to find where the belt is held together with a big staple. Remove the staple from one end of the belt. Cut the belt right where the staple hole is. Make another hole in the belt about 1/4" from the end. Reinsert the staple and pinch tight. You will be good to go! Sometimes the leather belt is just too old and dry so it has no stretch left in it. When this is the case, you need a new one. They are easy to find on Amazon or Ebay. "Leather Treadle Belt" about $15. Hope this helps!

I can't figure out how it could be pulled away from the machine in order to engage the winding belt. I'm wondering if my machine works in a different way or is defective?? I don't know, it's a singer treadle machine mostly resembling yours.

    Hi 👋🏼😊 Thank you for the video . I have my great-grandmothers singer sewing machine , it’s In a square Cabinet with a wheat looking emblem carved on the front ,the pictures ive found similar are from 1910-1915? It was converted to electric . I don’t know where to begin to know if I can still use manual or if I have to use the electric converted way. I also have no idea what the belt part is called or how to replace it should I need to. Help please 🥺 I’ve always wanted to use it and I’m afraid to mess something up not knowing it’s parts . I have a disability and can’t do much often but on a better day ,I’d love to be able to enjoy this . I can wheel my IV pole over to the sewing machine ... would be a great distraction during a 4 hour home infusion 😂 if this virus mess ever allows me to complete my papers to get started . Thank you for not having music or loud noises in your video , I have a medical condition and I actually go into tachycardia with some types of audio ,it’s extremely painful , I really appreciate your calm and soft spoken way of doing your video , many with my condition have extreme noise sensitivity. Another reason that would be helpful if I can figure out if I can still use this manually is there would be less noise as well .
    Thank you for your time 😊

    Is it still possible to buy a new shuttle and e tra bobbins? When threading my shuttle, the thread just keeps coming back up the slot.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  29 дней назад

      Yes, it's still possible to buy a new shuttle and extra bobbins. You might not need to though. When you pull the thread down the slot to the bottom point on the shuttle, make sure you give it a real tug - while holding your finger on the top of the bobbin in the shuttle so it doesn't spin. I have a couple shuttles that are fussy like this. Make sure the shuttle is very clean. If there is a bit of lint or thread caught inside, it will stop the thread from following the correct path. ;) Hope this helps!

      ISMACS (International Sewing Machine Collector's Society) has a great article that compares 3 machines. The New Family from the early 1880's, the VS1 from the mid 1880's and the VS2 from the late 1880's. You can check out a list of comparison features here (ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/singers_missing_link_the_high_arm_vibrating_shuttle.html)

    I have an old singer machine that looks identical but I don't know the model number. The decals/artwork are not the same, but otherwise machine features look the same. Should I look for a VS2 manual?
    The stamping on the right side reads L1121609. The shuttle and long bobbin look identical as well. I couldn't find a manual for it so your video sure helps.

      I'm glad my video could help! That model number is listed as a Singer 27 from Nov. 18, 1901. So you'll want to download a manual for a model 27. You are correct, it is the same machine as the VS2 - but with the newer version, they changed the shape of the bobbin shuttle just a tiny bit ;)

      I'm not at home with my machine right now. I'll take a look at it this weekend and get back to you. It sounds to me like you need to clean the shuttle really well. There may be something caught under the shuttle spring, making the thread catch.

      @kimwaldon5519 4 года назад

      @@TheMasquerade Thank you so much for your reply. You definitely had a good idea with cleaning the shuttle, a lot of dirt came out of it! Also, when I was putting it all back together, I realised that the tension screw controlled how tightly the spring holds to the main part. So I loosened it and found the thread easier and easier to go under the tab and also pull out. I'm going to try to get it to the right tension tomorrow and give the rest of your video a try - thanks again!
