Overgrown Allotment Progress: Planting

  • On this overgrown allotment site I managed to get some crops in the ground. I planted some seed potatoes. Desiree as a main crop, indeterminate potato and Jazzy - a second early determinate variety, I managed to get some globe artichokes too as well as some Jerusalem artichokes or sunchokes. I also put in some of the broad beans I had at home.
This could all be a bit premature but who cares? There’s stuff I can now look forward to.
I still need to sort the water issue out which I plan to do with a pond and some sort of drainage swale.

I came to this channel to get motivation for myself, (community planter boxes... some ok, some needed soil prep, some needed seeding or planting) and someone else who has a horror-plot. Which they have abandoned after a couple garbage-removal sessions for this year. They found another space within walking distance and are now waiting for the previous land-holder to clear out. Don't know if it is worth suggesting they look here and elsewhere online for solutions. They have an over-grown, sloped allotment on a hillside, lots of plastic, somewhat water-logged. I think I'll wait until a few weeks have passed and they have positive results in their new spot. For the record, they also became disenchanted with no-dig.

Have been a gardener for 40 odd years , a great all round potato i swear by is arran pilot, never lets me down, i always buy onion sets , i find modern varieties much more reliable thesedays, pot leeks also quick crop , interplant leek and onion rows with carrots to deter carrot fly, dwarf fruit trees will soak up all that water in no time , just remember to put a mound of gravel under roots to raise em up a bit, you're doing great but i would have double dug patch for potatoes incorporating manure as i went , then planting tubers 18 ins apart 24 ins between rows, keep the faith, mick

I can really relate this. When I first gogglebox my allotment I was full of hope and planx like you. Nature will let you know what you can and can't do. I hope your onions are successful, for me in 20 years I've never had an onion crop, carrots the same. Potatoes are more forgiving but never give a plentiful result. Fight slugs from day one! The joy that you get from planting, is the whole point. I would be itching to get planting already and I would probably do the exact same thing. Getting things in the ground will give you the most motivating visual progress 😍 Brave of you to put the Jerusalem artichokes in the ground! I still haven't dared, I have them i a bathtub with my apple mint 😂 A tub doesn't yield too many fartichokes to be honest. A tub could be a good choice for your worm farming though.. 🤔 What flowers will you be planting/sowing for borders and pollinators?
I'm looking forward to see this pond of yours! Maybe you could plant rice just for the aesthetics 🤭 Or you could look at the water chestnuts seriously!
The grass here has yet to become green, and there's still a ton of snow to come apparently.. And I still haven't sorted out a sunny spot for my onions.. But seeds have been sown, both indoors and outdoors. Multisown beets and chard is by far the most satisfying so far.

Pessimism doesn't get anyone anywhere. ✌And you're not blindly optimistic, let's just be grateful we're even aware of the consequences 🤭 It's trial and error study 👍I was just talking about the grass actually turning green, and it started snowing yesterday, another 20 cm!
