Neglected Allotment 4 Months Later. Bean Too Long
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.Месяц назад
The weather has been so odd this year. Everywhere in the world seems to have the wrong amount of water. Floods or drought and not much in between. A cold and wet start to June meant the slugs were eating everything! So I'm starting a lot of stuff again. How have your allotments/gardens been coming along? What's done well and what's been a struggle?

    I just use coffee filters with used ground grounds, Bermuda grass clippings (some completely dried out, some still freshly-cut green), torn up brown paper that typically comes in Amazon packages, maybe a small bowl of vegetable/fruit scraps, and that’s it. I do it in 5 gallon buckets that I drilled holes in. I already made 4 buckets worth of compost that I started back in May, and they’re just about ready to use. I have another one that I’m currently adding. I really believe our 100° weather and my frequent mixing has helped it all decompose so fast. Since I barely use any food in my compost, it hasn’t attracted any pests nor does it stink. I always have a bucket ready to continually add to.

    Hi! About "mixing" materials by chopping them with a lawn mower... Mowers CAN get greasy and oily and you don´t want that in your compost. There can also be other fluids and chemicals that end up in your cut materials, specially if it´s a gas mower. There is nothing wrong with manual mixing so why complicate it.

    • @tecmow4399

    You need to watch Douglas Tallamy. He has done decades of research on the exact topics you state for which there has been no research done(albeit in North America). Homegrown National Park is exactly about changing habitat for native fauna one garden at a time. But he also says that 70-80% native plantings is ok for this purpose and you can plant other species as long as they are not invasive to your region. As well, although pollinators and birds will use on-natives, they have different nutritional value. Our natives in the Great White North have higher fat content, etc for surviving extreme winters and for migration energy.

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399 16 дней назад

      His research has been conducted outside of gardens but his advocacy is for native planting in gardens as far as I can tell? So the research across many normal home gardens is still in short supply. My problem with the “Plant Native” advocacy is that the evidence is always “X species relies on X native plant”. But the problem with that is that you can find many counter factual examples of “X native species relies on x alien plant”. So the relationship is more complex while the native advocates are essentially disguising their political polemic as science. In the case of Douglas Tallamy I can’t comment specifically and as far as I can see his impact seems positive. But I’m just a RUclipsr with a lay interest and so there are almost certainly gaping holes in anything I talk about on the matter. Thanks for pointing it out - someone else mentioned him to me before. I’ll go and have a much deeper look at what the research he’s done now with interest 😊

  • @eastcoast4233
    @eastcoast4233 18 дней назад

    I don’t agree with this. It has too much human intervention, the bees need to be hardy enough under natural conditions to find a suitable home and stay there over winter without humans moving the wood inside. Doing that will foreseeably reduce the resilience of the bees.

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399 16 дней назад

      But there’s already human intervention in ensuring they have reduced habitat. But I see your point to a degree. They’d normally find a hole in a tree which would be dry over the winter. You could just put a better roof on the big hotel and I imagine it might help. If it didn’t show from the video - it’s not my field of expertise. I’m just trying to go through the research available to make a best guess
