    Nice video tumbling Tom. Enjoyed watching you raw dog plum tomatoes in your allotment. Unfortunately I arrived too late to your video and chopped half my bush off. There’s always next year..

    1st year growing Crimson Crush outside for me - it is a pretty average tomato, still sweeter than the supermarket but I won't be giving it much space next year. I will give Primabella a go next year though, thanks for the tip!

      @@tecmow4399 all (three) varieties I grew this year did pretty poorly 😁Crimson Crush was the heaviest yielding though I'd put it down to circumstance more than anything, it seems well suited to outdoor growing

    My first plant has been a Crimson Crush! It's my first year growing and i got the seedling from a garden centre. Taste is good! Not rave-worthy for sure, but still better than supermarket for what that is worth. Also hard for me to remember as i didn't get many! But as a lone neglected plant (i didn't bother with fertiliser, not the sunniest spot etc) it seems to have done well enough that i'd give it another go, got about 3 more growing on it that i hope to assess soon 🤞If not i'll try a cherry tumbler next year per your rec i think. Love your delivery style and i learnt loads here that i didn't learn at the start of the year when i could have done with it hah.

      You did the right thing having a go though. Now the advice makes sense rather than feeling overwhelming. Congratulations on getting any tomatoes. I know quite a few experienced gardeners who got hardly any this year off loads of plants!

    And what you're saying about reducing trusses makes much sense; I've just topped my tomatoes to direct energy into the fruits, but now I realize I do need to be more choosy about which fruits are GOING to ripen before first frost.

      I find it also means the tomatoes are larger than if more trusses and flowers are left on. How have your tomatoes done this year?

      @@tecmow4399 Our cows broke in once during the spring and munched the tops off most of my plants. After a while, the vines set a lot of big juicy fruit, but the temperatures were above 90F/32C for a couple of months so the fruit ripened much slower than I wanted. Now I have a lot of sunburned fruit and the autumn rains have just started up again so they're starting to crack.
      Most US gardeners were picking bushels of tomatoes in August, and my glut has just come now; I'm hoping they'll all ripen before the frost comes, as we live just a bit higher in elevation and it leads to first frost dates 2-4 weeks earlier than our neighbors down the county road.
      I'm not unhappy! I'm ecstatic to get any fruit at all after this strange first season, and I'm getting a lot (I am one of those gardeners who oversowed and I ended up with more than 50 plants). It's just been hard, and I'm still learning.

    Had an allotment for the first time in 2016 and you can recall it was a hot summer, I had 40 plants of tomatoe, cherry, peardrop, grape or plum shape thousands and millions, small but very tasty, moneypenny, taste crap, Napoleon Plum, furry due to irregular watering, best of all taste and how easy to grow was tumbling tomatoes, grew in hanging baskets, could withstand dry periods but still produced lots of (Bigger than cherry Toms) tomatoes. Through all plants i was taking home half of carry bag full 3 x week. Grew in bottomless pots filled with comost and place ontop of a growbag that was on top of a water holding tomatoe plant tray, simple set up. Never bothered with trimming side shoots just removed growth from the base up about 18" to 2 ft. Tomatoes was very tasty, made tom soup out of Napoleon and money penny and was great with toasted bread and melted cheese crutons..simple, making me hungry now so i hope this is of use

    I’m in Oxford and so far I’ve had a good result for my outdoor toms. I’ve grown a wide variety this year in my back veggie plot. I started all from seed in April indoors in a Super7 heated seed station. I leave 4 trusses and prune the foliage when the 4th truss forms. Best results were from Roma, Black Moon and Alice’s Dream. All lovely tasting toms👍😀

      That’s amazing! I’m planning on growing some Alice’s dream indoors next year. I didnt know it was good for outdoors U.K. My Romas really struggled in the cold nights in June and took a while to get going after that. So glad you were successful 😊

    I grow Black Krim and Brandywine heritage tomatoes among others in my Zone 3 Canadian garden. They are blight resistant and very flavourful!! Due to my short season, all varieties are started indoors under lights about 6-8 weeks before last spring frost and many are harvested while green for indoor ripening. Honestly, I can't tell the difference generally between vine ripened and indoor ripened for canning stewed tomatoes or salsa. For the picked-off-the-vine sun-warmed sweetness of a just picked fresh tomato, of course outdoor ripened tastes best.

    Oh my, I've been so busy today and saw the video notificatio. Much frustration having to wait 7 hours 😂
    This fall I will bring some of my tomato plants inside just to overwinter. This way I can take cuttings in December and nurse them on under my growing light. Hopefully I can overwinter some of my bell- and chillipeppers aswell.
    Tomato-varietes outdoors are even more sparse here in Norway. When time delivers funds I'll most definitely invest in a greenhouse for my peppers, tomatoes and sweet potatoes 🤩 We already had our first frost a week ago 😢
    I do love Tiny Tim cherry tomatoes though, happy in a pot and easy to move about when the weather is disagreeable.

    Thank you for a video on how difficult growing tomatoes here can be!!
    I have a small space next to no sun even in the height of 'summer' I gave up for many years.
    This year I was in big DIY shop n reduced hanging baskets of tomatoes... So thought what the hell....
    They have done well... Leaves suffered with mildew or blight or something but I just didn't have the time to nurse them...
    I have just taken off what has survived n they have done bloody well!! Little cherry sized ones but 😊😊
    Probably cost more than vine ones from the shop but hey ho.
    Suggestion / question
    I am going to keep some of the seeds n hope if they survived this terrible year n my location, they may be able to survive others.... When you have yours ready, is that not an option for yours onwards?

      So is the question do I save seeds? If that’s the question then yes absolutely! I’ll definitely try some of the saved ones from all the outdoor tomatoes again next year.
      That’s great that you found a variety that worked in your space. It’s demoralising having them fail right at the last minute

    Melbourne Cup Day in November is the traditional day for planting outdoors any type of tomato here in Aus... You guessed it, I'll be "raw-dogging" 😎 mine in a couple of weeks time, hoping to get a crop before the Queensland fruit fly arrive to lay their maggot eggs in anything & everything fruity around late January time. Yes, it's stressful & yes, it's worth it 😊 Cheers for the video 👍

    I've grown Crimson Crush. As you note, they take a while to ripen but they are blight resistant. By the way, I also tried a rosella variety and it seemed particularly susceptible to blight. I also tried vivacious successfully too.

    Great point about not planting deep in UK. Not all advice is appropriate everywhere. People need to think critically and not blindly follow meme tipsters

    I have a 3m x 3m poly tunnel thing and even in there this year. I think we just had crappy light at the beginning so may look at grow lights. Any growers out there had an luck with early start under lights?

      @littlebacchus216 I start all my tomatoes under lights. The keys to success are not starting too early (about 6-8 weeks before last spring frost), and keeping lights no more than 10 cm or so above the plants so they don't reach for light and get leggy. If they happen to get leggy, you can always trench plant them.

    My advice regardless of whether it is cordon or bush or cherry or beefstake type to check how many days it takes to ripen fruit. For UK, I'd go for 80-85 days since transplanting. Good sources have this within description. I grow beefstakes up to 2 meters in Belfast, and this works quite well. I just hate the idea of growing the same as everyone is growing around me, I like to test new varieties. This season however is very unusual and rare. Lack of sunlight, cold north-westerly winds combined with cool temperatures impacted everything. At least is not that wet as it was last year. And seeds are the way to go.

      The days to maturity is definitely the best method. That’s incredible in Belfast! It’s been tough this year. Mine struggled late June/July with the cold temps and took a while to catch up. Which beefsteaks have worked for you in the past?

      @@tecmow4399Yeah, very tough, overall harvest down by 2/3. Interestingly, beefstakes picked up in early August. I hope there is enough time to get them ripening s some of them are turning. Weather permitting, they should be fine until early October.
      I have two varieties, Black Krim which does slightly better than Moldovan Green Beefstake, these are sometimes nearly seedless, very meaty flesh.
      I just remembered, I'd recommend Latah as excellent cherry bush variety, never had blight on them, they mature in around 50 days, really strong sweet and tangy flavour. These are prone to leaf spot, but this doesn't affect the fruits. The last variety I have is I think Green Doctors, very tall bush green cherry with nice tropical favour.

    Zn is an important micronutrient regarding susceptibility to fungal infections, a sure sign in the development of Zn deficiency is an uneven leaf edge/margin where it joins the petiole, it should be symetrical. John Kempf has a good webinar on early visual indicators of micronutrient deficiencies (Advancing Eco Agriculture channel).

    where did the beard come from! . i also have had a lot of issues with my tomatoes this year ive got so many tomatoes that are not going to be able to ripen on vine, but there is a american southern food thats battered green tomatoes it tastes really nice.

      @@tecmow4399 i got my tomatoes from a friend . when i got these tomatoes they had been in the small pot for to long, so they suffered a bit and got put out to late. so i have not harvested a single tomato from the plants, and there is so many green ones so i think ill leave a couple green for the fried tomatoes, and ripen the rest off vine in a bag with a banana. im also going to save seed because their meant to be one of the best yellow tomatoes in england.

    i've found the best way to grow tomatoes outdoors is to move them under some sort of cover (not joking) even if that is a full on greenhouse (joking).

      @@tecmow4399 yes definitely, anything is better than nothing, but the affect of blight is so devastating I only grow tomatoes in my greenhouse now. I grow Gardiner's Delight, let them grow into a jungle and fight my way through to pick the bright red ones.
