TestDrive Garage looks at a simple way to clean seat belts. Perhaps the winter months have taken a toll on your seat belts by leaving salt stains, dirt, coffee, or other gunk you just don't want. With 6 items and about an hour and a half of your time you can get your seat belts cleaned up with everyday household items.
Our method can be done without necessarily buying anything, as these items are usually found in your house already. You need a bucket large enough to fit your seat belt in without making a mess, some dish soap, something to clamp the seat belt with, we suggest using an actual clamp, a cleaning brush, a hair dryer, and a towel or two. If you don't have a clamp like the one we have in our video you can always try to stuff a small towel end into the seat belt's retraction hole, or even pinch the belt lightly with the door or window.
The first step is to fill the bucket with warm soapy water and prepare the seat belt for cleaning. You'll want to put the towel on the seat of the car in case any water spills out. It's also important that the seat is level so the bucket wont tip over. Pull the seat belt out and clamp it at it's fullest extent then submerge as much of the belt as possible. For the most part the most frequently exposed part of the seat belt will be submerged in water, as it's impossible to get all of it at once. You may choose to move the bucket after to get the upper and lower parts of the belt that weren't cleaned during this first step.
Leave the belt submerged in bucket with soapy water for approximately an hour. Afterwards remove the belt and pat dry with the towel after moving the bucket out of the way. Use the brush with a bit of soapy water to clean any stubborn stains or messes and scrub with the direction of the seat belt material, usually the length of the belt, not the width. Once you're satisfied that the belt is clean on both sides use the hair dryer and towel to clean the belt, and leave it to air dry overnight if possible. You don't want to retract the belt immediately if it's still damp as it could cause mold issues if left for too long.
Repeat this process for all the seat belts in your car!

Hey man, don't beat yourself up over your weight! You make great videos, and I dont think anyone minds about your weight. Thanks for the awesome videos! :)
;) It was just a little joke, but we do actively remove comments that don't relate to the content of the videos, so I wanted to jump in before anyone started.
PRN lol alright man. I get what you mean.
@@PRNTestDrive People can be so mean! thanks for your time sharing!
He's Big Sexy...😘
@@PRNTestDrive thank you for showing a regular DIY video on how to clean your seat belts. My E30 left horrible dirt marks on my dress shirt the other day. I rarely drive it and when I do it's for going around town and not to work.
BTW, you're an attractive man. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Those that mind - Don't matter... Those that matter - Don't mind. You look fine. Thanks for sharing the information!
We appreciate that, thanks!
Very true comment.
Slim or overweight, wet or dry, I still enjoyed this video as have countless others. Very well thought out video, very enjoyable, easy to follow, good tips, and solid camera work!
Glad you liked this one! Even by today’s standards this video has held up pretty well. I’m always happy to see people are still finding this years later.
Tried it exactly as shown. Really liked the soaking idea and did all seat belts at the same time. Worked great!!!!! Appreciated also that you are not a babbler - to the point , easy to listen to. Liked your bit of humor thrown in.
Glad to hear this method worked for you! This was a very early video that I did and I'm very happy with the way it turned out, along with the positive feedback we've gotten since.
My seatbelts in my new-to-me car were so grungy they wouldn't retract properly. This is the best video on youtube showing how to clean them! This is a great and often overlooked bit of car detailing. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it helped!
I really liked how you displayed your tools/products ahead of time at the beginning. Seems less overwhelming to clean my gnarly seatbelts now haha
Glad it was helpful! I wanted to make it as straightforward as possible.
Thanks Soo much. This method was great. Tons of help. The blow-dryer is great as well.
This was brilliant! I bought a used truck as a work truck and the driver side seatbelt wouldn’t retract. Seat belt was pretty dirty. Did exactly as you said and it retracts perfectly now! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
We're really glad to hear that! This method seems to have helped a lot of people, I'm really glad we're still hearing about success years after we published this.
Are u crazy!!!he did a crappy job. Why did he tell you to use a hair dryer when he himself didn’t use it. Really. U better check some some other videos.
No
Thank you for taking the time to post. Very helpful and will try this on my car.
We hope it helps!
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to share. I plan to try this when I get home from work today.
Hope it works out well for you! We did this recently again ourselves, we have a new-to-us 2013 Mercedes S-Class that had what appeared to be ketchup stains on the rear seat belts. Had this soak for an hour or so and scrubbed it up. Unfortunately the belts are light grey so they won't look perfect, but it's almost. Hope it works out well for you!
Hello! I am from Niagara as well and was thrilled to see a local neighbor answering my question about how the heck to clean a seatbelt! So thank you! 💕
Glad to hear it, and I hope it worked out well for you!
Your comment on being sweaty was hilarious!!! Thanks for the video brotha
Glad you liked it, and hopefully it helped!
Brilliant! I've tried several ways of cleaning the belts in my '99 SL500 and none have worked to my satisfaction. I never thought of soaking them like you did. It seems like that should work great. I'm gonna do it this weekend.
I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
Thanks! We love making them, and have some interesting cars lined up for the next couple months.
This was extremely helpful! I wish I had time to do this wherever renting a car. Uber drivers: take note! Consider this for your passenger seats!
Thank you for a great video!
Glad it was helpful! It's something we should definitely all consider when buying a used car, especially older ones.
I just tried it and it worked great. You may even inspired me to clean the rest of my truck. Thanks brother
Glad I could help!
Great videos brother, thanks for helping the rest of us.
We're glad this video is still getting views and helping people!
Ya’ll!!!! I’m amazed at how well this worked! I did a color run and forgot how nasty I was so I put my seatbelt on and got red powder all over it 🤦🏻♀️ My seatbelt looked like I got shot. I did everything he said minus the hair dryer (I used a microfiber towel and let it air dry over night) and I’m so happy with the results!!!
Glad to hear it! We're happy that this method has been working for so many people, we're getting at least a comment a week still on this video.
That's what I was looking for, a fast n easy way to clean my seatbelts with simple house hold cleaning tools.thank you very much.
You're welcome!
Great video. My only suggestion is to use laundry detergent instead. It's made to be used with fabrics and a lot better at removing stain and dirt.
Good suggestion! I believe we've seen that suggested on forums as well.
Perpetual Radio Networks so is that a yes or a no lol
Or laundry stain remover powder.
Awesome job brother! Keep up the great work!!!
Glad you like it, thanks! We really want to do more DIY videos like this, always open to suggestions!
Your video and you have been very helpful to us. You look like a wonderful man, and that's all that matters. Thank you so much!👍💪🏽🙏
Glad to hear that it’s helped you! Always love seeing comments like this on this video.
This helped my car’s seatbelts retract a lot faster with a smooth operation. Thanks for this information!
Glad it helped! I've been in some cars recently that also had really dirty belts that made them hard to retract, this is a great way to get them cleaned up and working better without damaging them.
Thanks man, I used a bucket with warm water and oxyclean instead. Let sit for an hour and agitated it every 10m. Looks brand new and now retracts easily! So annoying getting in and out of the car and having it not retracting properly. Much better now.
Great to hear that you've had success! Oxyclean seems to be pretty magical, I just got some for normal stains and it seems to work well, so I can definitely see this method doing wonders.
6 years after you made this video, I am trying this out! Soaking my seatbelt as we speak! Thank you!
Fantastic! I'm always happy to see this video is still getting traffic and helping people out. Thanks for checking it out!
Love this video, and your humor :)
Glad to hear that, thanks!
Great method which works! I just used Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on beige seatbelts and it worked like a charm with minimum effort and time!!! Just lock them in place afterwards until they dry and touch up spots if needed! I would try an inconspicuous spot first
Good to know also! We might have to try this down the road to see if it works for us.
Good tip PRN! I'll be trying it tomorrow.
Glad to hear that, good luck! We always love hearing that this method works, we’ve used it a few times so far on vehicles we’ve had.
Thanks for the video! It was super helpful!

Great info, cannot wait to try it.

Thanks for the help dude. Solid.

Soaking makes the most sense. Once soaked, scrubbed and washed, I would dump the soapy dirty water, and use bucket of clean water to rinse it.
Definitely!
Excellent and to the point video! I Got my rear belts out of the car and soaking now in laundry detergent in a bucket.
Glad it helped!
Thank and great tutorial!! You have really helped me and my vehicles ‼️✝️🙏🏼❤️Have a blessed day ‼️
Glad to hear it! We're always happy to hear that people have had success with this method to clean up their interiors.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad yo made this video!!
Glad to hear it helped!
Good video! Thanks for doing it. How can one clean out the part/latch that you insert the buckle into? I've tried brushes, various vacuums, and even putting double sided tape on the end of a thin stick like a popsicle stick and shoving it down in the opening. Believe it or not, the last idea works the best, but it's still not the 100%. Any suggestions?
This was SO helpful! Planning on tackling this task this weekend! The weight comment was unnecessary... You were wet because you just washed your car! No jest, I think you are damned handsome!!! Thanks for the info... I need to track down so sort of clamp!
I appreciate it, thank you! Good luck with the cleaning, we've heard from a lot of people who've all said its worked out great for them.
Thanks!!!! That’s super helpful
Glad it helped!
Really good video. Nice job.

Great advice! Thanks mate!

You’re a boss. Thanks for the info!
Glad to help!
I feel so dumb, I would never have thought of doing this! Lol. I was always trying to use the fabric cleaner and towels with little progress. Thank you so much
Hope it helps!

Great little tutorial, quick and to the point, with a little humor added in(reference to sweating) during the video.
Glad you liked it! We're open to suggestions for future videos like this, we do like to keep them on-point when doing any DIY videos.
Thanks for this~ trying it now!
Hope it worked out for you!
@@PRNTestDrive yes it really helped, dried alot faster than i thought too, as it was a hot and windy day! Thanks again!
Thanks a lot sir! This video is exemplary. I look forward to cleaning my self belt soon. Do you have any tips for cleaning seat belts that have an "oxidized" stain on them? I left my window open one time when it rained and woke up to an unfortunate stain on both a large part of the belt and my rear seats. Appreciate you for taking the time to respond!
Good question! You might be able to add a bit of vinegar or lemon juice to the soap solution to see if that helps to clean it up. Either one or both together won't damage the seat belts, so might be worth a shot when you try it with this process. Hope that helps, let me know if it works!
Thanks for the video 👍
My pleasure!! Always love hearing comments for this old video.
Thanks mate :) Great video :)
Glad you liked it!
Good video brother.
Much appreciated, thanks!
That's a job well done. Thanks.
Thank you!
Great video ❤ thank you very much!!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
I use a washing machine pod and bucket method and a soft bristle brush, works great
Good to know!
Good video. I also have the same hair dryer
It works well!
came here just for the seatbelts, didnt even noticed you were overweight. thanks for the video. you earned 1 sub.
Glad to have you on board!
Thanks Sweetie! 😊
Hope it helped!
Now it's warmed up in southern UK a job for my clk
Hope it works out well for you!
I've got as far as hoovering the truck out, it's 30 degrees C here and I'm calling it until 6 pm when it's cooler. Then the seat belts and upholstery, finish around midnight then a cool one!!
I try to avoid any work in those temperatures also! We're going to be hitting 30ºC+ again here soon.
@@PRNTestDrive Working in 38 to 40 is a killer, up and at work by 7 am and finish at 4 pm absolutely done in 😂😂
Nice job! I like the soaking idea! And the hair dryer. Thanks!!
Hope it works for you! We've gotten a lot of positive comments about this so far, seems like a lot of people are getting their belts cleaned up!
3:20 You made me laugh into my drink, quite hard! :) Top comedy delivery
Glad you enjoyed it! I sometimes strike gold when I try for comedy in these videos.
Your videos are the best! And i love your BMW.
Thanks! We really appreciate that. We do too, we're really hoping to be able to invest some time and money into it this year.
thanks for the video
You're welcome, I hope it helped!
This video should have more likes.
I appreciate that, thanks! We've had some nice success on this video over the years, I'm definitely glad I put it together.
Thank you!
Hope it worked out well for you!
Thanks. That's great advice. Is that a Mercedes? I've got aMercedes CLK - love the cream leather & seat belts are very dirty. I'll give that a try. Catherine in Scotland.
This was a BMW 740iL I had for a while, but I'm currently in a C-Class with a similar colour. Hope this worked out for you!
Great Video! The Number One reason a seat belt will not retract? A dirty, stiff belt! I like the dish soap method the best for removing grease, dirt, food, etc. Some use degreaser, but that can be corrosive and hazardous to your skin.
This method seems to be working well, we've had a lot of comments about it recently.
Great vid. :)
Thanks! We wanted to do something a little different this week.
Thank you bro
Hope it helped!
On my E39 the previous owner had folded the seat belt somehow and it has a permanent ish crease in the middle, making it harder to retract. I tried wetting that and keeping it pressed flat. Some small improvement, but still not great.
That's really unfortunate that the PO left it that way, soaking it for a longer period of time might help if you haven't tried.
Good stuff
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
I'm going to try this. I bought a new car, but someone from the lot had cologne on and it got on the seatbelt. I've tried a few things and none have completely worked .
Hope it works out for you!
Thank you
Hope it helped!
great video
Thank you! We're glad you think so, seems to have helped a lot of people so far.
This looks like a great simple way to clean a seat belt. Thank you for posting this video. Do you think it will work to remove mold if we put a mildewcide in the bucket?
Personally I haven't used that product before, but checking online it seems to be an odor-free and indoor product, so I don't see it necessarily causing a problem if you added it into the bucket.
@@PRNTestDrive Thank you!
Hey! Love your videos.
Would you say that you wasted much more time and money repairing your e38 comparing to other cars you owned in past?
I don't feel that I have, no. Mind you I haven't owned many cars so far, but the previous two cost me around the same to maintain, the previous being a 1990 Honda Accord, and before that a 1983 Ford LTD Crown Victoria.
I see, thanks! Might be a good point to include in your next video ;)
Good Luck
Great video! I have to ask, are you from Minnesota? Or somewhere up in the northern states?
Not quite, this video was filmed in the Niagara Region in Ontario Canada, I've since moved to the province of Québec.
When you said there will be threads that worries me because in Australia that means a defect notice
Not large ones, and this held up pretty well over the years I had it. I recently did this with my S-Class as the rear seatbelt had what appeared to be ketchup stains. Harder to get off on grey material than beige, but overall it worked out without any issue.
I used KRUD Krutter and a bucket and plastic gloves and a water extractor. Rubbed my hands across the belt in the bucket and the dirt just came off so easy brown seat belt went right back to grey.
We'll have to look for it!
Thx!!!
Always glad to hear this technique is still working for people!
My last car was Buick Lesabre from 2002, and the seat belt at the end decided to not buckle sometimes...
1st did you state what product you used other than water
2nd what type of camera on the pedestal are you using brand model/serial number looking to upgrade my video equipment Thanks 😊
Any dish soap should work fine. I believe I was using a GoPro Hero Session for most of this along with a Nikon D5300. Everything I film now is on an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
You should spray it with purple stuff or for those that dont know what thats is a super concentrated degreaser and if its not purple its not near strong enough b/c a real dirty seatbelt is going to take a lot more than dawn and i love dawn.
My friend has a 1972 nova and it has bench seats so it has three sets of lap seat belts in the front bench. Will this work as good as it did for your car or is there a better way/solution?
It should work just as well. I had a 1983 Ford LTD Crown Victoria as my first car, it too had the bench seat in the front with lap only belts. I'd try moving the metal buckle as far towards the seat as possible and only soaking the belt itself. I might recommend finding a shorter and wider bucket in order to prevent any tipping over, as dumping a bucket of water into a car like that will be impossible to clean up.
Thank you for the vid :)
Thanks for finding it!
Good job. Is it ok to not rinse off the soap after washing the seat belt?
We've used this method twice now without any issue, but you could certainly soak the belt a second time in clean water to get as much of the soap off as possible. We've found by scrubbing and drying you won't have any noticeable soap residue left over. We haven't drive this car much since filming this video but we haven't had any issues with the belts since cleaning.
A steamer works well along with any fabric cleaner
That's very true, a steam cleaner can work for a lot of the interior trim pieces also so not a bad investment overall for those who like to keep their vehicles (or houses) as clean as possible all the time.
FYI: It recommended NOT to soak seatbelts because it can weaken the belt. This is per the manufacturers.
Thanx
Hope it helped!
Had to wash my passenger seat belt because my wife had a fun night and barfed all over it. Pickles and wine...yuck. After washing it and scrubbing it...I'd say number one thing...ALWAYS make sure you give your seatbelt time to DRY before letting it spool back in place! I had a old suv someone detailed for us and washed the belts, but didn't give it time to dry and let the belts spool back in place The car became undriveable with mold spawning on the belts, dashboard and the seats. It was ruined...this barf time around...let the belts dry for 3 days in the garage, windows down and a fan blowing on them. Also hit them lightly with a heat gun every couple hours and let them sit in the sun in the driveway with the windows down. Again..make sure you let the belts dry %100! Or you will have a far bigger issue then a dirty seat belt.
Drying is definitely key. Hope it worked out well enough for you!
Nice e38. What do you conditioner do you use for your seats. I will also try cleaning my seatbelts on my 38 as well
Our go-to products are always from Meguiar's, we've found them to be better than a lot of the other off-the-shelf products out there. Aside from their cleaning product we haven't done much to condition the seats here, truthfully they aren't in the best condition to begin with. The previous owner's kids crayon'd on the back seats and you can still see a bit of it, and the driver's seat needs to be replaced again, it's not great. Ideally we'd like to replace the front seats with sport ones, and get a new set of bottoms for the rear.
Perpetual Radio Networks
Ok I use McGuire's also seems to work pretty good. I even sit on a super soft blanket to keep them as nice as possible. Unfortunately they still ended up looking worn but still good for someone sitting in the chair for 250k miles.
However, I did come across two slightly used front seats at the junkyard. They were $50 each (steal) and lightly faded from the sun sitting out in the yard. No tears or anything so I was pretty happy. Also came across black seats that looked brand new but didnt match my interior. Maybe you will have some luck there, especially for miscellaneous interior parts.
Also how miles did you have on your car when the guides went out? Ive heard 175k but still has yet to happen thankfully
I haven't had them done since owning the car, and I bought it at just under 200k km. Unfortunately I made the biggest mistake anyone could when buying a used luxury car, and that was not having the service history. From what I can tell the guides haven't been done, but there's no real way to know. So far though with the new battery the car has been starting up flawlessly.
