Sonic CD Ending: Sega CD vs. GameCube Comparision

- Sonic CD's ending is cool. However, the version most of you have watched has been the remastered version for Sonic Gems Collection on the GameCube. The SEGA CD, due to having less colors and processing speed, had a more pixel-art look to it. It's really neat looking, especially with Metal Sonic at the very end. And now you can compare them side-by-side! Note that this does not include the "You're Too Cool" part with the flowers at the very end.
Apologies for the low resolution on the SEGA CD side and the ghosting on the GameCube side. The latter half of the SEGA CD's video was originally the size of a postage stamp in the corner of the screen next to the credits, and I could not find a source for the GameCube video that didn't have the ghosting effect.
Also, fun fact: the GameCube version's speed is completely different from the SEGA CD speed. I had to split up the individual parts and slow the GameCube side down to ~50-70% to get them to sync. I'm not sure if this to to sync with the Sonic Boom music or what, but it's there.
There's some cut stuff on both sides too. Missing on the SEGA CD version is the bit with the vine-covered floors, speculated by some to be the missing level R2. Missing from the GameCube version is a bit of Amy standing there after Sonic ditches her and some other frames that got gobbled up by crossfades and the like.
The scenes were animated by hand first. Instead of just running the footage through a conversion program (like so many other SegaCD FMV games), they actually took care as to what frames to include AND retouched the converted footage so it doesn't look all grainy and horrible. Now THAT'S how to do a good conversion for hardware limitations!
Yeah, but part of me thinks that converting them could’ve given them a higher frame rate.
The lighting looks a lot better in the Stardust Speedway section of the Sega CD version, Metal Sonic having a cool reflection and everything.

Badniks:OH SHIT HELP ME
**explodes**
The Robotnik statue looked amazing in the original as well
Some people could just modify the Sonic Gems Collection ROM and then modify the Sonic CD ROM. It would be easy... if we had the SOURCE CODE. Eh, we've done things that would be considered INSANE without it. Such as emulation.
Since the animation was made for the Sega/MEGA CD, the colors in the GameCube version don’t match their respective zone often, it’s especially apparent in metallic madness and quartz quadrant.
2:21 Nice Dirty Joke Toei!
They're robots, it's not exactly 'that' dirty. LOL! :D
What's the joke?

still not as weak as the Palmtree Panic boss
2:49 Metal Sonic looks great in the original version
Thrn why did the remastered version make him look freaky?
Looks like Knuckles chaotix
FramedThunder Damg. I was about to Comment that! I’m I bit to late..heh..lol
He looks like his in game sprite instead of a draw
Sairot why does the original have better shading?
the gc version has an extra scene, an early stage that didn't make the cut woulda been cool to know what stage that was gonna be like tho
I always thought that would have been collision chaos on the deleted scene.
Funny how theres not Tidal Tempest
The scene Reminds of the Land of Darkness from the OVA, also the level's ID is still in the game, but all the folders relating to it have been removed, Idk if it's accessible by the Sonic 1 level modification PAR code though as that code could be used to access hidden palace and wood's remains in Sonic 2 or the S&K zones in Stand Alone Sonic 3 and as CD was built on Top of Sonic 1 it might be possible that the code works there too and the "Round 2" slot could be accessible that way
The second scene in the credits is a cut stage called R2 it’s real name was relic ruins and it was supposed to be like marble zone from sonic 1
DrShemp I just realized there is no metallic madness either I think these scenes were animated when the game was still in development
Some people are saying the Mega CD version has more detail and this... is not the case.
Frame rate aside, seems Toei Animation hadn't completed the Opening and Ending animations to their fullest by the time the game came out (either that or Sega had accidentally included the wrong version on the game itself, which is also likely). A number of things were definitely improved upon for the later versions of the game (more specifically, the original PC version release, which uses the final animation).
Some stuff has been almost completely redrawn, scenes were added, some animation was cleaned up and Opening obviously has a better frame rate (which was more likely due to file size restraints, than anything). There is a couple things that it seems Toei had re-cut a bit differently (the scene where Sonic leaves Amy at the end, was shortened for instance, so we do lose some of Amy's reaction).
Regardless, the final animation definitely has, overall, better animation and effects done for it. So not sure why people are saying otherwise.
It wasn't really redrawn. The animation from the Gamecube is the actual animated video of the opening and ending, the Sega CD version is the same video just compressed and butchered a bit to make it viewable on the Sega CD, and of course it received a far lower resolution and lower framerate, because of the low framerate they had to remove a couple of scenes so it would be in sync with the music.
The reason why the ending looks a bit off in the GC version is because it's played in slow motion, which also adds a ghosting effect, on Sega CD the video was already in slow motion and because of that it didn't look that off. In Sonic Jam you can actually see the ending played normally.
No. Some animation is definitely redrawn between what was released on the Sega CD and PC releases. Particularly the very ending bit when you get the good ending. Also, some of it may be due to compression, but there is definitely more detail in some shots (either due to retakes, or due to less compression, depending).
One example of redrawn animation is at 0:41. Little Planet is completely green on the Sega CD version, while PC onwards, has been partially redrawn and now has actual water and continents. (Likely to fix a continuity error as the previous shot had the proper details). Also, the effects in the Sonic face shot are slightly different as well.
At 2:35, they redid the background slightly, so there's more detail. Definitely not a case of the compression here at least.
But as I mentioned above, the "You're Too Cool" end segment as part of the good ending, the animation here was 100% redrawn. It's not in this video, but you can check between the Mega CD and PC/onwards endings that are located on RUclips.
Opening has some retakes as well (on top of more animation).
Toei Animation drawn the animation of Sonic CD, and it really looks like it. I don't think they would redraw it just for a re-release, especially since there wouldn't be the same animators.
There are some differences but if it edited, it was edited for the Sega CD not the later versions. The video we got in the later version(Sonic Jam, GC, 2011) is most likely the original version of the FMV's, while the Sega CD version was modified a bit to actually look somewhat good for Sega CD's limitations.

Agreed, Sega CD on the right.

전준규 there is no your too cool
I wonder if the down scaling from the master tape caused the color saturation to bleed that many shades darker. Maybe that encoding functioned better on the hardware.
I would've voted Gamecube if there were any attention to lighting.
well no the sega cd version just looks like it has more detail because of the palette limitation, not because there's actually more detail xd
@@MicklePickle wrong
@@MicklePicklePalette limitation or not, they rreduced the contrast in the lighting for no reason. It was a pointless change and matched the colors of the characters LESS than the palette-limited version. They should have stuck with what was provided on the box art
While the final FMV has more detail overall, I'm constantly noticing additional shading on Sonic himself in the Mega CD original that is sometimes entirely absent in the final FMV used in the PC/GameCube/2011 versions (most noticeable at 1:32 and especially both Sonic & Metal Sonic at 2:43/2:50)
ok i've replied to so many comments about this.
It's not extra detail, it's palette limitations on the SEGA CD
@@MicklePickle stop roasting the original
US's version is slightly faster than the original JPN one, the 50-70% speed up one is the JPN Sonic gems to sync with the Ending song for JPN
it's better the pallete of the sega cd but the gamecube has better quality and higger framerate
PS if there is some mistake is that I do not speak English
The GameCube/Mobile versions of the game look cooler with the anime style that I love from Toei, but something about the pixelated version from the Sega CD looks even better.
Especially at the part with Metal Sonic.
Yep
But the new style was made in the windows 95 version
I wish the GC version had the editing of the CD version. So weird how the timing of some shots is changed for seemingly no reason
Imagine if they remade this game or made a new one with Toei and the cutscenes had the Shintani art style
prob the sonic fans would go crrazy
You can really tell this game was gonna be a remake of Sonic 1. Palmtree Panic is like Green Hill, Collision Chaos is like Spring Yard, Tidal Tempest is like Labyrinth, and that unused zone that was gonna be between Palmtree Panic and Collision Chaos, at 1:41. Is like Marble, I mean, it makes sense. Marble was between Green Hill, the paradise calm level, and Spring Yard, the casino like level. So that unused level was gonna be the Marble of Sonic 1 CD.
Where Is "You're Too Cool!" Part With Flowers And "Try Again" Part With Little Planet At The End?
so was this supposed to be stock footage for a cancelled animated series or what
Fun Fact: To the people what is Saying: "What is that extra scene from the GameCube version before Collision Chaos"? So, thats was a Deleted Level named "R2" because from a fan what was entering the files of Sonic CD in a Computer and seeing the files of the game and the levels, but he see what the order was incorrect, like: "R1 (Palmtree Panic), R3 (Collision Chaos) ... " And the "R2" was not there! So that's is the Deleted Level, what was called from fans by "Rellic Ruins", because of a guy what published the "Possible" OSTs from the Deleted Level.
Looks like when it was imported into the Sega CD, they touched it up a little
Something that wasn't carried over in the newer scans
this video doesnt show it well, but the entire thing was redrawn. look for a higher quality video to see what i mean
Are actually nobody gonna talk about that r2 scene is in the gamecube version?
The Sega CD version clearly has more detail in it.
Look at the crystals in the Quartz Quadrant section at 2:07 , they have a cool reflection in the Sega CD version, but a boring one in the Game Cube version.
Look at Metal Sonic when he comes near the screen in the Stardust section at 2:50, he has a awesome reflection as well. In the Game Cube version they even drew Metal Sonic's eyes wrong.
I have no idea what you're talking about. I see no reflection on either
I’m pretty sure it’s palette limitations
@@MicklePickle rubbish. Disliked. Belongs in the trash can.
@@Jarttis he's talking about the shine
You can tell which parts are recreated and which are compressed 👍👍
Prefer the SCD due to the added shading in some areas 👍 It makes up for the 16 colours and 12ish FPS. It might butcher the original animation to some but it's what I grew up with 😉
I actually kinda like the colours more in the SEGA CD version
That's technological limitation because of limited palette
@@JinoBeats HEY ORIGINAL HAD THE BETTER SHADING EVEN THOUGH LIMITED PALETTE
1:16 *Sonic used Spindash Rock throw!* *It was Super effective!*
I just realized that bad Nick in the ending cutscene where the floor falls apart is the one in metallic madness.. the thing that grabs you for a short amount of time and then flings you off
No, it's from deleted zone called "Round 2", which was meant to be between Palmtree Panic ("Round 1") and Collision Chaos ("Round 2"). This badnik was found in the game's files and Christian Whitehead said it had been meant to be in R2 Zone.
@@dgsf9444 I think what he means is that that bad Nick was also planned for Metallic madness after the scrap of R2/ Relic Ruins. And then it was scrapped with the relic ruins
Nice video I dont know the Sonic CD have it made it for the Gamecube. Thanks for the Video I Like it.
sonic gems collection
Ethan Bitz yep
Ethan Bitz i have it for my ps2, but its broken... ;_;
Everyone's speaking on the detail difference and then pointing out that the gamecube version actually has more - but that doesn't mean anything if the common eye perceives less as more. There's a reason people people feel like the palette-limited, less detailed version has better shading. 1:33 I'd say is a prime example, but this is just corner-cutting. It's not even a matter of "worse" shading/lighting - it's just not there, period.
i’m pretty sure the sonic jam (saturn version) was done in 60FPS
yeah i've seen someone record it straight from the game, it's smooth as a peanut butter jelly sandwhich
2:18
So now i know how eggman can make many robots alone
I have a thoery, Tidal Tempest wasn't included because it was still early in development, and R2 wasn't included in the sega cd version because it was scrapped. Am I right?
And I'm also not sure if the scene before the metal sonic race is supposed to be Stardust Speedway or Metallic Madness.
I like the way Sonic looks better in the mega/Sega cd version because it resembles the original Sonic more than the current classic Sonic
I like the darker shade of blue on mega cd
2:21
You're welcome.
why did you make the sega CD version worse, its really low quality compared to other rips on youtube

Where Is Ending Credits Sequence In The Sega CD Version?
Just got the CD soundtrack for this game at 3:27p.m. 11/1/2022 and it's the Sonic The Hedgehog CD 20th Anniversary Edition CD and I'm listening to it while watching this! 4:54p.m. 11/1/2022
Can you possible upload the full japanese ending from the gems collection online? There’s not really a good quality version of it online with the original lyrics intact.
Isn't the Gamecube version just a port of the PC version?
Yep, to my knowledge.
2:50 a close-up of Metal Sonic far better drawn in Mega CD; too out of animation; in Game Cube is all more cohesive, but the Mega CD one is pure fear; it's the metal sonic we can see in the main cover. I love it, still out of the animation style.
EDIT Same with SOnic at 2:51, in his back... woahhh :D

While SEGA was trying to steal Nintendo’s players???
