Damn, she's amazing, I'd love to have her as my boss. She's asking all of the right questions (e.g. on strategy), she clearly identifies key issues (legacy tech stack and how address it), she seems very down-to-earth and she's actually willing to learn. 10/10 wish my boss was like her.
12:00 "Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence." 😊 Wise words indeed. This was a nice interview. I like Katie's determination to get a data scientist job even if some employers considered her under-qualified. Perseverance (backed by skills and smart strategy) wins most of the time.
I did an internship once where I had to do the time on site metric but for an app by parsing the log files. It was pretty challenging as you have said where the timestamps mess up frequently and it looks like some sessions last for days (which is not true). The way I solved it is by putting safety limits like, if the time between two consecutive actions of the same user is more than, say, 1 hour, then consider it to be a new session. Also, there were also a lot of weird cases which had to be taken care of like, the home pang landing event was being recorded before the app open event.
She was so articulate and made it an awesome interview! Actually got me interested in data science. They should get her to do more data science related interviews i think it would inspire up and coming data scientists.
Great interview! She’s very articulate. I would love to watch her in more interviews. In data science, particularly as a machine learning engineer, are the maths behind the algorithms and models really that essential to understand or is a high level of understanding enough and execution of the model is of importance?
As a machine Learning engineer myself, i would say yes,> Having a high level of mathematical undestanding is core for that position. This is mainly due to the fact that the job involves a lot of optimization methods to decrease the use of ressources your model/program use. Knowing how to excecute the model is the easy part, which any data scientist should be able to do.
12:00 What she meant was some bad things happen not because of people having bad intentions, but because they did not think it through properly. Correct me if I was wrong.
Yes but also assume it is a mistake or incompetence that causes something until proven otherwise. Instead of what our reptilian instincts have us do by default which is "find the villain" (essentially the opposite order of what the quote suggests). You'll be a lot less angry in life and have more ability to solve problems if you can follow the advice of the quote.
Most big corporations that people believe to be evil by some intention at the top are "evil" as a result of a lot of people in the company (from top to bottom) making not carefully enough thought through moves, mistakes, and just not being aware of the bigger picture of how everything adds up to what their company does and taking responsibility for how they add to it.
"Evil companies" are the default. Especially the bigger a company gets. No one has to have a plan to make a company evil for it to happen. They just have to lack a plan to be good and not do the hard work to make sure they are. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ― Edmund Burke
Great interview! Sorry a basic question from a cat lover. But why do we draw the conclusion that people care more about their cats when what's wrong with your dogs is higher in time on site? Doesn't it mean that people spend more time on webpages about dog than cats so people care more about dogs? Maybe I am understanding something wrong here...

Really awesome interview! The questions were good and answers very informative. Honestly one of the best data scientist videos I've seen so far.

She worked in ad industry, most of them tend to be really articulate especially the upper management
she's so cool. I'd love to work for reddit when I graduate.
"The most direct career path into data science is being a Jaded physics PhD." LOL as a theoretical physics PhD now data scientist here.

4/20 date on the time-on-site metric query. Coincidence? I think not.
it was 42,469 views, is 69 coincidence?
Great interview. She seems really knowledgable on data science. I feel like i saw her before on a data science panel.

She's adorable
Im lost...people were more worried about cats yet whats wrong with your dog polled the most. Maybe im missing labels?
She's talking about subreddits. r/WhatsWrongWithYourDog is more popular, but when you add all the cat subreddits, cats win
It’s because dog owners are hanging out with their dogs and not on reddit lol
Good
she seems like a nice person unlike most programmers.
