Thank you so much for this, my other dog had to get her teeth removed because they were rotting and would of killed her. This was when we adopted her. My other dog hates being touched or anyone going near his teeth and obviously we don’t want the same thing happening to him so thank you so much ❤
I don’t understand some of the comments about dogs eating toothpaste (dog toothpaste is designed to be edible.) Just make sure you are using toothpaste made for dogs. The methods of letting the dog get familiar with the taste and smell makes sense and is working for my Shiba Inu. It’s not like you can tell them to spit and rinse 😂
@@melbapeach162 exactly! I’ve dealt with rescues who run away just if they see me pick up the toothbrush or walk over to the box where it’s kept, so it can be a slow process to counter condition!

My dog is a 13 yr old adopted chihuahua & won’t let me near her teeth! I was wondering if you think she would eventually adapt to teeth brushing if I start out like you showed in your video? Thanks
Did you get your chihuahua a professional dental cleaning with full mouth x-rays under anesthesia? I recently adopted a chihuahua and paid to get her full mouth x-rays and dental cleaning under anesthesia. They found 5 infected, rotting, painful teeth that needed to be removed. Now that her mouth is healthy and no longer painful, she is letting us get near her mouth more and hopefully we can brush her teeth every day.
These are the first steps of desensitization, plus my vet says the toothpaste touching their teeth will help clean them but we’re working on full brushing 👍🏼
How else do you expect a dog to start getting used to the stuff? If they grow to like the flavor, seeing the brush come out can be more like a treat than a chore.
Yeah nope, I’m not going to have my dog ingest a bunch of that ish just to have him be “comfortable” once they brushing starts they will freak out regardless
Yeah I agree٫ They will be scared anyways. And you shouldnt probably let them ingest alot of it becasue it could make them sick or it could be really poisonus like regular toothpaste٫ just brush their teeth like normal and they will get used to it.
You should do your research on raw meat first dogs and how it actually makes them a vector for spreading salmonella all over your house when they lick their butt because salmonella doesn’t die in the intestines it gets pooped out where the dog can spread it EVERYWHERE

with your logic, humans only need to take baths once a year like our ancestors, too, right? that's a really ignorant statement. Especially when you don't own any animals. Some dogs are more predisposed to dental issues. Just because you don't understand it, that doesn't mean dogs don't benefit from it. Dental surgeries can be very expensive, so doing some preventative measures to keep their teeth from becoming bad actually helps a lot.

Very helpful thank you!
You're welcome! 💕
I wish my dog was as corporate as yours.
It took me a whole year to train him not to sleep on my bed and he still does it behind my back still. Lol

I trained my dogs since they were a few months old so i dont have to go through all that burden
That's the best - start while they're young :)
Great if you have a puppy, but this building up slowly method is vital when you rescue a dog that hadn’t ever had it’s teeth brushed before 😖

Sorry my dog isn't as cooperative as the dog in video.
Then you’ll just gotta move slower and break up into more steps 🫶

Did you let the dogs eat the toothpaste or a doggy snack?

Lmao I just grabbed my dog and started brushing away. He was just trying to eat the toothpaste.
I have tried so many different flavored toothpaste products and my dog turns her nose up to them 😂

so we just let the dogs lick the toothpaste off without brushing. got it!
Well you should work up to brushing! But this is the first step to getting them comfortable

Why you give carbohydrates to the poor dog.
give them raw meat, so you don't have to use that garbage.
