    Bacho got in the kids face to read if he was traumatized or if he was a psycho. He saw how traumatized he was and let him live. Also killing the puppies was something Pavel was unable to do. Bacho is a good Sgt. He spared Pavel that.

    I was in the military 21 years ago. Seeing suffering can and often will come back to haunt a veteran's memories. And its the most random shit that can trigger a traumatic memory.

    Great reaction Tom! Bleak is the word. Juxtaposed against the title "Happiness of all mankind." Like you mention so many of the smaller details of this series are phenomenal. Every actor, from a bit role to a key player, does such an excellent portrayal. As well as the storytelling style. Ep 3 was horrific and sad with the gruesome deaths of the firefighters and engineers. They decided to go even bleaker with Ep 4. What sticks with me are the ends of both episodes. At the end of Ep 3, we are left with the sorrow of Lyudmilla, sobbing at the cement burial. This episode we end with her completely numb. That's some very effective bleakness (along with extermination of the animals throughout the ep)

    Remnants of the melted core are still in the basement of the ruins. They call the blob of melted fuel "the foot," which is a fair description, or "the medusa," because if a man were to stand there and look at it, he would almost certainly die instantly from the intense radiation.

    • @iKvetch558
      @iKvetch558 8 месяцев назад +1

      I believe the foot is down to a level at which it is emitting enough radiation to give an average person a lethal dose of radiation in about 9 minutes. I am not sure if that is based on that person touching it. There are also multiple blobs of corium under the reactor, and I do not think the foot is even the biggest blob. This video goes into detail...but I have not had time to independently verify the data he is using. ruclips.net/video/m_qGTJW4Cx4/видео.html

      @@carkawalakhatulistiwa True, nobody is allowed to go near the foot, but not because it would kill you instantly...that's not how it works. I was just talking about the fact that there are larger masses of corium underneath Chernobyl #4, so the foot is not really the most radioactive thing inside the sarcophagus.

    It's just an immensely grim slab of the reality that needed to be faced in the aftermath of the catastrophe but it's so, so well done. Also - has there ever been a role that Stellan Skarsgård doesn't knock out of the park? I can't think of another actor at the moment who can deliver a monologue quite like he can.

    Interesting question about why the ideology of the USSR didn't make it easier for them to sacrifice people -- though of course they did plenty of that in the end. I think one of the most helpful suggestions this show makes is that the evils of the USSR were uneven and patchy. There were plenty of instances when they actually tried to do the right thing as they saw it. They just had different thresholds for what is and isn't acceptable than we might have. And of course even in the worst systems there are still people who sincerely try to do right.

    It seems strange to use positive language anywhere around this show, enjoyed? No. Nothing about the show is enjoyable. Loved it? No. The story unfolding, the people we follow, there's nothing to love there.
    What I will call Chernobyl is awesome. I was (and am) awed by the quality and care taken in this series. Where there 'should' be shock, there is. Where there 'should' be shame for what humanity is capable of, there is. Where our hearts should feel bruised and battered for seeing what was necessary in the aftermath, they are. Even in a reaction video this episode brings me to tears. Knowing that animals, plants, and wildlife in general, had to be destroyed and buried appropriately, somehow isn't the same as SEEING PETS, domestic PETS, critters treated with kindness by humans, critters that equate humans with receiving love, need to be put down - crushes me every time. In my initial viewing I shared the reaction of "it's a bit early" when offered vodka on arrival - only to immediately grasp why they drank. Early, and often. So many thousands of people traumatized by the necessities of surviving the aftermath. Extraordinary show.

    Hope you don't mind me copy/pasting this one from another recent reaction to this episode,
    Oh boy...episode 4...most folks find this is pretty much the toughest episode to watch...hope it is not too bad for you folks.
    Something that does not often get mentioned is that many of the men who went out onto those incredibly radioactive roof sections actually volunteered to go back out more than once in order to save others from having to be "biorobots". Also, that huge revelation that the Soviet State knew about the fatal flaw in the shutdown system and both covered it up and did nothing to fix it, all the while lying to even the plant operators about the safety of the RBMK reactors, is something that could only happen in a totalitarian state like the USSR...where there is no free press or free scientific establishment for whistleblowers to talk to when they know about wrongdoing by the State.

      I'm afraid I must disagree, at least somewhat. Yes, there are methods for hopefully preventing or pointing out problems. But as as we've sadly seen, time and again in the US (recent example being Boeing), when regulations are tossed aside in the name of greed, we can end up in the same place.
      As I see it, the destruction of the middle class has also been due to profits going to individual CEOs and stakeholders, rather than funneled back into the company to improve conditions and keep wages competitive (at least in keeping with inflation). I imagine there are still companies that offer pensions, but they are certainly becoming fewer and farther between.
      Sorry for the digression there.
      Be well. 🙋🏼‍♂️

    • @iKvetch558
      @iKvetch558 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@CaesiusX Except we find out about issues with Boeing pretty quickly, between the press going after them and the government regulators being involved. In the case of Chernobyl, the Soviets covered up information about how unsafe the RBMK reactor was for over 20 years...even from the people who operated them....because neither the scientists nor the press had any ability to speak out about it, and the government chose to regulate the reactors for cheapness instead of safety. There is nothing really comparable in the West, at least definitely not in regards to the nuclear power industry.

      @@CaesiusXyou are totally correct. Those same travesties happen here, we just normalize it. Guns and US style healthcare are perfect examples.
      Now with the destruction of the middle class, people are even more scared and desperate and people are even more reluctant to become a whistle blower.
      The Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster is a perfect example of people being complacent and no one speaking up.
      Does not matter the system, humans just aren’t that great.
