    Attention to detail: Legasov looks behind the door when he's sent into the holding room. It was a common KGB tactic to have an operative with a gun hiding behind a door to kill someone before they were even seen.

    Although the show mentions it, they don't stress it, but it's important to note that this internal "flaw" that RBMK reactors had would only manifest and become catastrophic IF it is pushed to its absolute brink and limit. Unfortunately, as you can see, people in USSR grew up with a very dangerous mindset of "if there are multiple safety measures in place, it's ok to push past them as long as there's at least one safety measure left to keep things from going wrong".
    I was born in Armenia and lived in Ukraine for 3 years, so I got to hear about incompetent mindsets such as this causing dangerous situations. My dad was a flight engineer (I don't believe this position exists anymore, but he was essentially an onboard mechanic so that if anything goes wrong with the plane mid flight, he'd try to fix it) on a commercial airline, and he told me a story about how the pilots were trying to show off in front of very important passengers that were on board and show just how steep that particular airplane can climb, almost 90 degrees. The problem was that they had barrels of pickled products in cargo hold, so when they tilted the plane up, all of that salt water spilled and shorted some wires creating a fire in the cargo hold. Thankfully they were able to put it out and land safely, but this is an example of the kind of carelessness you could expect in Soviet Union times. Sometimes there would be warning lights that would come on and instead of checking it, if it was a "not entirely necessary piece of equipment" as they deemed it, they would simply go on with the flight. They would also often go WAY over the recommended weight limit of the plane - they would illegally sell tickets to the plane on the side to passengers with no seats left, so planes would fly like busses with people standing in aisles. You had to be a hustler in USSR, if you weren't making money on the side, you weren't going to get anywhere in life, so that's how they did it, by overselling tickets off the books.
    Growing up in that environment, you just figure that's how the world works and you don't see anything wrong with it. It's not until you get to go to other countries who take safety seriously that you realize just how unnecessarily and idiotically risky your homeland was, and how bad corruption truly is.

    • @elric5371
      @elric5371 7 месяцев назад

      No, you are completely wrong. The reactor was pushed no more than it should have been, the cause of the explosion was almost completely design flaws, the show is really bad at explaining how it exploded. No one pushed it to any limits. The only power surge occurred after A3-5 was pressed.

    • @PeterDB90
      @PeterDB90 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@elric5371 I'm no nuclear physicist, and I imagine neither are you because if you were you wouldn't be in the comments section here, so I assume that even if you know more about nuclear power plants than me, you still know much less than people who deal with this as part of their job, so I will leave this link to a video that essentially says what I did, that the RBMK reactor in most ways was actually a very clever, cheap way to create nuclear power, if not for this ONE (albeit very fatal) flaw that allowed it to explode IF the staff make it undergo a very specific set of steps.
      I.e. the explosion of Chernobyl reactor was absolutely and completely human error and fault - had they followed normal safety procedures and had USSR not been such a corrupt country with disregard towards rules, the RBMK reactor would have worked just fine and we never would have even found out about this flaw.
      The reason they sound as alarmist as they do in the show and act like RBMK reactor is essentially a ticking bomb with another disaster waiting just around the corner is because for how high risk of a scenario they create, the level of expectation when it comes to nuclear reactors is that the should be self-regulated, so that even if you get incompetent staff who disregard safety rules, the reactor would still self-regulate and not allow itself to become a bomb.
      This is what they talk about when they say "positive void coefficient" - there's a positive feedback loop that can be created in an RBMK reactor (again, only if you follow very specific steps to bring it there) where reactivity increases, which causes further reactivity which increases it further and allows the reaction to increase out of control until meltdown or explosion. The reactors that were used in the western parts of the world had negative void coefficient, so that if the same-ish scenario happened to them, the design of the reactor would balance itself and cause the reactivity to fall instead of rise, thus not allowing it to explode or melt down.

    Really enjoyed this series but I have always had to complaints. In episode 2 you see a helicopter crash while doing an air drop trying to put out the fire after going over the core. The implications is something went wrong because of the radiation. In reality there was a helicopter that crashed but it wasn't till October and it was because it made contact with a crane. The second major error is the Bridge of Death. This is a myth created by journalists. There had not been any real effort to find anyone from the bridge when that story was written and for whatever reason they included it in the end. I understand why they showed the helicopter crash earlier than it happened and while you do see it hit the crane they wanted to show how dangerous the exposed core could be. The bridge was unnecessary.

    OK...one last copy/paste...
    Welcome to the final episode...well done getting through this show...it is a tough one. I really like the way the makers of the show added the notes at the end to cover some of the things they got wrong, simplified, or made more dramatic...I just wish they had done more of that, or been more honest. For example, they say that "it has been reported" that everyone on the "Bridge of Death" died...but those reports are very much NOT true....so technically, they are being truthful, bur not quite. Other things they do not admit to, I can understand...such as the fact that Legasov was not even at the trial of Dyatlov and company...but it is kind of necessary to turn him into a kind of hero figure and have him do much more than he really did so that the story can be simplified enough for most folks to keep track of.

      So now it’s time to fill you in. The information that you are reporting about the Bridge of Death having been safe or everyone not having died, is false. A lot of that information comes from residents who run tours to Pripyat and Chernobyl today. These people make the statement that police cars were at each end of the bridge, busses were the only one to cross quickly with citizens, and nobody went to watch the fire. Now, these busses weren’t brought in until a day and a half after the explosion. The police were not posted anywhere in towns or cities EXCEPT FOR the hospital and the power plant. Everything else was business as usual for this day and a half. Now, I have a friend, Audi, who was there when this occurred. He lost his aunt and two cousins on that bridge, and had the explosion woke him up his mother and himself would be dead as well. I believe that if you’re not going to do, real, proper research about a topic and like you said you are just going to “copy/paste” information, you have a large chance of spreading information that is just false.

      @@elric5371 while Dyatlov did not know that the reactor could explode, he began the test without enough power. He also continued the test, as shown here in the series. Now, again, he was not aware that the shutdown button would not work, BUT it is an emergency shutdown button. He took that reactor to the extreme, it was eventually giving off 10 times the maximum amount of energy BEFORE the control rods entered- because they never made it back in, only the tips did. He took that reactor and stretched it like a rubber band, and thought he had a backup plan (the emergency button) that plan is not supposed to be relied upon. That is the reason he went to prison where he belonged. He was released in 1990, only because his health had deteriorated significantly.
      As for what you said about Legasov, you are just plain wrong. This series was accurate. I would love to see any piece of research stating that Legasov was worse than Dyatlov. That statement is just wild. He was named one of the top scientists of the century in Europe. He prevented a massive thermonuclear explosion that would kill everyone from west Germany to mid Russia, and made it still habitable today.

    We'd all like to think we'd do the right thing and shut the reactor down preventing disaster. But living in a communist regime fosters a different mindset of fear from the state. The state can and will ruin you and sometimes even your family. To me this show did more to showcase the hellscape of such forms of government more than anything else. Like that one minister who used to work in a show factory, favors are given out to loyal party members despite their lack of competence.
