Some thoughts from an older woman to younger women....if you're feeling stressed about your home. If you're broke. If blogs and pinterest bum you out. I heard something recently I wish I'd heard decades ago. It was a story with a lesson about the brevity of life. I can't recall the details. It came down to the idea that *any* house you live in be it ever so humble is only temporary. It is NOT a forever home. It is like a vacation stop off in a hotel room. How much time, worry, or money would you spend remodeling a hotel room you were only going to stop at for a short stay? Life is like that. Yes, nest, but don't live discontent, comparing, in debt. Put decorating and remodeling at the bottom of your priority list. There's an old embroidered poem a friend stitched that hung on her wall when her children were small. It was titled Song for a Fifth Child:
Song for a Fifth Child by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton (1921- )
Mother, oh mother, come shake out your cloth!
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking!
Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue
    (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby, loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
    (Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
    (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.)
Oh, cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby. Babies don't keep.

I have redecorated my entire life. I’m 39 and I have finally found my style. I love nature, vintage, rustic things. I recently painted almost our entire house a white color. I swore I’d never do that but I love how open and warm it has made our space. I’ve also found that I love floral patterns. My husband calls it grandma style. lol. So yeah, that’s me. I’m like a forest grandma.

My husband calls my florals “Grandma Style” too…and I love it. It finally feels joyful to me, not just clean, but the florals on the curtains, on my dress, in the vase…bring me joy when I look at them.

Im a renter, my house doesn't really have a theme. The things we have in our home is random things we picked up.Thanks for the permission to make our space ours. I always thought I will decorate once we buy a home.

I loved this video! We are also a military family, and are actually moving again next month. My favorite thing about moving so often is that it forces us to confront all the useless stuff we own. We can edit and really evaluate what is important, what do we love, what isn’t worth packing and dragging across the country AGAIN. We are weeks away from a move and I’m going through the entire house and decluttering. No drawer or closet is safe! 😂

Lisa, I love your thoughts on the farmhouse, country-style living. Especially the part with the chicken. I'm a country girl at heart ❤.

Such a fun topic. I live in WA state, cozy lighting makes such a difference here. We have moved a lot as well, and realized that holding back on making a home cozy, even for a short time was actually kinda stressful. Put the favorite things out and enjoy them. The desire to create beautiful spaces is there for a reason.

We bought my dream home 27 years ago, an 1896 Victorian. This is our 3rd home, our second house to renovate. I painted our dining room a dark Hunter Green with white trim and white wainscoting. I was told by so many people that I would regret that, and why not go all white. But I held strong to my convictions and painted it the green. It was lovely! And so many compliments on it! Four years ago I needed a home office and the dining room was the most logical place to put it. We repainted my beloved green dining room to a Creamy Mushroom (much more fitting for the new use), but it was a sad day for me to see my beloved Hunter Green go. Emma (that’s what I named my house) was fine with the color change, but if I ever think about repainting my burgundy kitchen or my royal blue living room I get the strangest vibes! It’s like she is telling me don’t you dare! 🤣
The greatest compliment I’ve ever received about my home is when one of my cousins told me how cozy and welcoming it felt. That is what I was aiming for!

I also have found that sometimes people don't know what they are looking for until its presented to them in decorating. I'm thankful for the decorating mistakes I've made. They sure help us to know what we like and don't like.

Oh my gosh. I'm 57 yrs old and I've never known how to achieve what I see in my head or a picture that's perfect. My husband are country/industrial. Maybe a bit more industrial for him. My country is a lot like Lisa's, but I also like muted bright colors with some neutral. We've always been broke, so money is always an issue. We're fixen to move, not sure yet where in Arkansas, but I'm wanting to find a home to accommodate my likes, but if the house doesn't like it I'm lost. This is the last home. Our forever home. 😊❤

thanks so much for that plant tip, plants are beautiful and just worth getting! Feel so bad when mine die off too and it could be because it is seasonal or maybe getting the hang of growing that type but looking at that cost factor is awesome!

But what do you do when your husband hates every little decorating decision you make? I will move something and explain that it's just a placeholder-as you said- and he doesn't get the concept. He expects the whole design to be fleshed out before I execute. So I feel stuck and frozen because I create by editing on what I have, not by creating a design from scratch.

My husband is the very same way- but ive pushed ahead now for the past 33 years. People who visit our home often compliment the decor- that's gone a long way for me. I still havw to remind him that there is no definite plan or end in mind when I start. It baffles him- like it sounds it does your husband. Hang in there!
