ABOUT KATIE
Katie is a homesteader and homemaker based in Fort Wayne, IN. Before homesteading, Katie was a working actor, musician, and director, but chose to follow her heart and come home to be a mama and tend to the most important garden in her life, her growing family. Along with her husband and two little girls, Katie grows a decent-sized garden, raises meat rabbits, and keeps bees all in the backyard of her quarter acre property in the suburbs. After years of thinking she couldn't homestead until she moved out to the country, Katie decided enough was enough and started creating abundance in her backyard. Now, she teaches families how to create their dream homestead right where they are through backyard beekeeping!

My grandfather was a beekeeper and had hives at our house growing up. He stored his honey from multiple hive locations at our house and won awards at the state fair for it. Beekeeping is near to my heart.
Also, bee stings are an actual therapy. The stings can be beneficial according to some. 🤷🏻♀️
That is so cool that he won awards for his honey!
My number one Homestead tip: start small.
It's super easy to get excited and get way too many animals or make too big of a garden, etc. It becomes overwhelming very quickly, especially if you don't have the infrastructure to support it all. ❤

Interesting... I live in Bridgeton Mo and my neighbors down the street have about four cattle in their yard that I think they use for eating obviously and as far as I know no one in the neighborhood complains they have been doing this for years. I don't know what the neighborhood rule is but I know we don't have a HOA so I think that helps. I never smell them so I'm fine with it. I look forward to seeing them as I drive through my neighborhood. Also in Maryland HTS. There's a family that has a couple of horses and we enjoy seeing them too... funny when I see the animals I never really think about if they are supposed to be there...
Gateway animals - interesting talk about bees. My husband is terrified of bees/wasps so never going to happen here, but we also can’t bring ourselves to eat our animals so we eat the eggs, but use the seniors for pest control on the 2 acre property. I’d never do an HOA! But neighbors can be just as troubling so yes, privacy fencing is magical! 😂 No one would know I have had a pet pig for 14 years.

great job. we do beekeeping too. all the neighbors are afraid so we have them somewhere else. If it's the Lord's will ,we can have a bigger garden in the future where everything can be togehter and also have chicken.
For me, the hardest animal to raise would be rabbits. I had a pet rabbit as a kid. Also, how in the world would having honey bees kill the native bees?

Does Katie favor a particular type/brand of beehive?
Hi there! We use the Langstroth hive! It's a standard set up for the US, and is best for maximum honey harvesting.
That’s sad you eat rabbits I’m not trying to be negative or anything but there’s no way that’s sad I don’t eat chicken I don’t like chicken I’m more like vegetarian but I do eat fish.
