For a mom who is pinching pennies, no it doesn't always work. I took the course but it's not always affordable when you have to pay monthly fees for a blog, especially the one recommended... and you're not told about the monthly fees until after you pay for the course. None the less, both of you have good shows and even in the shows people can learn a lot.
Love you both so much! 2020 scared me, like I’m sure it did a lot of people. Our grocery stores in my small town were empty. We live in a less than 800 sq ft duplex. 2 bedrooms. My kitchen has four cupboards only 😅 since 2020 I have been to goodwill, yard sales and habitat for humanity. I now have a bakers rack, a big wooden pantry, and shelves. Many shelves. We have an area under the stairs that’s storage. It has shelf stable food in there now instead of having what ever was in there before. We don’t have much room but we have food security stashed away 😂 Now I’m trying to figure out how to get another chest freeze 😂 I figured out all my “stuff” I had stored was far less important to me than knowing I can feed my family and anyone else around me for that matter and have toiletry items and during that time I taught myself how to make our laundry detergent, soaps, shampoo, lotion, etc. Definitely a lot of learning. Learned how to maintain a healthy sourdough starter (thank you Lisa) I can make our own bread, noodles, apple cider vinegar, so so much. All of you women are priceless. I have learned so much from you, your sister, Jamerill, Becky, so on and so forth 🙌🏻❤️ thank you doesn’t even seem to be sufficient ❤️❤️❤️

A bed skirt is great to cover your can goods in a bedroom with risers on the bed you can put a ton of food storage out of sight and so a sheet that maps out dates and exactly what is there. You will forget. Just a thought.

I’m going to be 73 shortly and I’m on here to learn 😃 I learned plenty from my mom being the youngest of six but having a refresher course at my fingertips is a Godsend.
Great to see two of my favorite people talking about this stuff. "Store what you eat, and eat what you store" is such good advice. I, too, have been meddling a bit with homesteading. 2020 was very scary for us. We lived in Las Vegas at the time, and my stomach still clenches when I remember standing in line at the grocery store at 5am, with security guards yelling at us how much we were allowed to buy. There was NO meat. Sometimes no bread, no milk. A real wake-up call.
Having a working extended pantry is so important! I so appreciate Jamerill helping families learn these skills. Also appreciate you, Lisa, for doing the same.
I always say that food will save your life. SO... it doesn't go in your garage. Everything else can live in the garage but NOT the thing that saves your life. (and especially the life of your children -momma thoughts!) So, things that can move to the garage are... coat closest, shoes, even clothing. All appliances that you don't use daily, out to the garage. Pull the couch forward and put stacked totes full of pasta, rice, 5 gal buckets, etc. You can be closer to each other and it won't look great but remember... it SAVES YOUR LIFE.
So you may already know but if you clip a smallish corner when opening your mylar bag you can reuse it and reseal it, it will just be a little smaller. 😊
We have a Sharp Shopper in the next door county. The pallet shop I work at receives recycled pallets from them every other month. I really need to check them out.
I am a mom of 6. We currently have 1 child still at home. As a child, I was raised to survive off the land. We did not have much money so our meat was from what my tank hunted or fished for or from what my grandfather raised (hogs) on my now little homestead. My mom did quite a bit of canning from our garden, my grandfather's garden, or fruit produce purchased. My grandmothers' canned as did many previous generations. I still can my produce and meat. I have chickens, ducks, goats, and an incubator. Eggs, milk and meat.
I have been watching Jamerell and Large Family table for 2 years love her content. If you ever get a chance to hear her life's story it's amazing how far she has come. She is one smart lady.
I was so greatful I have been preparing for decades and never had to go to store during cvid because I refused to wear mask (I retired as military doctor right before) and we didn't even know there were any restrictions or people having to stay in where we live and was able to continue going out as normal no mask except for big stores and medical places. But I was glad not to worry about shortages or crowds. We have doubled down since on preparing and we live on farm so many things we never have had to buy like eggs and have 1000s glassed and 100s on table at any given time . We are building a walk in freezer because we have several stand ups and deep freezers all full and many refrigerators. We went from family of 6 to 3 recently but still shop the same and cook. Been trying to can more items too especially meats from freezer. We havent had rodant issues but weavels and had gotten in some items we threw out and bought again and store differently.

I am so excited to see this collaboration!🎉 One way I save for bulk purchasing is when I receive my tax refund. I immediately remove a certain amount for bulk foods, kids reoccurring activities for the year, and yearly membership fees for family places like the trampoline park, theme park, movie theaters, etc. I never have to worry about running out of food, I always have the kids activities paid for, and we always have a fun place to go to. My life totally changed after I started doing this! Tyfs this podcast, I absolutely love you guys❤
Wow that's incredible! I'm just happy to have gotten my pantry to the point where I can comfortably know that I can just make something with what I have. We don't have a lot of space, but not buying everything every week is so good!
I have all the things Jamerill has on her list as critical food items. I also purchased Barley for soups and powdered milk. I love that she mentioned pancake mix, because you don't have to add ingredients that you might not otherwise have. Oatmeal is my big one, and I have a lot of syrup to make it sweeter for those who don't like it plain. For a change, Cream of Wheat. They do have chocolate Cream of Wheat for picky eaters and for a change.

We built our house in 1980-on a budget-so there’s not much extra space and have no basement.. Our children are gone now so I do have an extra closet that we’ve added shelves to make it a pantry. I won’t be turning those two bedrooms into pantry space-because I’ll keep that space for visits from the children 😊. However, I have no qualms about storing food under every bed in my house. I bought the flat rolling containers and have several under each bed. It works well for me. 😊
Oh and I’m on year 4 of growing our garden. I’m only allowed to have the tall raised garden beds as to not ruin our rentals grass. I have 7 this year. I purchased 3 greenstalks. Growing five varieties of potatoes in food safe buckets. It can be done. You just figure it out ❤

They were only willing to allow the tall legged raised beds and I snuck two in that sit on the ground 😂 But they are so very heavy I don’t know how I’ll take them when we move and we MUST because I have 2nd year asparagus in it….

We're building a pantry next month and will be doing extremely strong, deep, shelves to fit 5 gallon buckets on the bottom 2 shelves. I keep most of my food storage in buckets. This will be much closer to my kitchen! So excited!

This is extremely helpful. How does one store meat, vegetables, and prepared meals for large families? I only have one large freezer and by the time I get the bulk meat, veggies, and fruit processed/ put in the freezer…there is not any room for prepared meals that feed a large family. Tips? If someone cannot afford multiple freezers yet or the electricity goes out in the summer more because of overload of electrical grid from so many people in the area…then what?

Lisa, we have the pantry on the wall just like you mentioned! We used the Ikea besta system and love it! We went with 3 tall units side by side with doors on them and having that extra “pantry” gives so much peace. 😊 LOVE this video!!!
I have a couple wire shelving units in the garage. Cans, jars, and bottles go right onto the shelves. Bags and boxes go inside of plastic totes. We live in a pretty temperate climate so the temperature swing is pretty minimal.
I have a space in my basement that has a ton of cabinets that I have been attempting to turn into my food storage pantry. I am still trying to figure out what to prioritize and organize. It doesn't help that people keep putting stuff from renovations in front of my cabinets. I also have to go gluten free so the bulk wheat flour for sourdough has to now be changed into several kinds of flours. Really thinking about going mostly paleo. Anywho.... how do you organize your pantry when you don't have much space?
You don’t need a oxygen absorber for sugar or salt. It will become a brick. You don’t want to have that happen. Thank you ladies, this is a very important topic. Also, with the under the bed storage thing. I would store toiletries or medical needs. Even spare underwear and socks. Stuff like that.
I have been bulk buying for almost 2 decades. I have done freezer cooking for over 15 years. During the Shutdown, I was only concerned when my disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, and feminine products started to run low. Paper towels and tissues, I could use washable rags. I could have for the others, but I'd rather not.
Freeze dryers are a soendy investment whereas most may want that sense of security sooner than saving for a freeze dryer. To each their own! We all want to feel safe and secure😊
Jamerill, you talk about feeling foolish for not sticking up more or homesteading more in 2020. Didn’t you have the major kidney issues then?! Speaking from experience, having a kidney infection/ stones, makes it hard to live a regular life. Give yourself grace. Plus you had a newborn around that time too.

I have been bulk buying for almost 2 decades. I have done freezer cooking for over 15 years. During the Shutdown, I was only concerned when my disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, and feminine products started to run low. Paper towels and tissues, I could use washable rags. I could have for the others, but I'd rather not.

Who said stocking up is hoarding. You work on it a little at a time. That is preparing not hoarding.
Freeze dryers are a soendy investment whereas most may want that sense of security sooner than saving for a freeze dryer. To each their own! We all want to feel safe and secure😊

Speaking from experience, having a kidney infection/ stones, makes it hard to live a regular life. Give yourself grace. Plus you had a newborn around that time too.
