I don't know if this is helpful for you, but for sounds and vocals that are less present, I tend to layer those sounds with sine-wave synth sounds. It's very experimental yet this way I don't raise the noise level of the recorded sounds, and I have more control than regular eq. For the record, your video is super useful and the audio issues weren't too disturbing, don't worry. 😊
Hey Eliana! Great video. Love the work you've done on the vocals but also on the music production as well. I would love to see your tutorial on mixing such track, especially that super clean low end!
awesome De-esser. I never checked out the slate one. love the visual especially for the sibilance. I can also see this working really well with our favorite reference track and the sibilance that is accepted on commercial tracks.
Like the purple on your site. Randy Coven back then used a vibrola on bass to mimic fretless on a fretted bass. Purple bass and outfit, I still wear a purple bandanna, Funk me tender, RIP RC...
Thanks for the great video! I learned many new tricks. It would be even better if the background music only sounds when no examples are brought. It's hard to focus on what's important. Also, it would be helpful to hear the changes in the context of the overall song as well. Nevertheless, very good documentation!
early transition t girl here, thank you for your content!!! it’s inspiring to see you pursue music and makes me want to further my musical studies. i have a background in jazz but want to do more r&b/pop type arranging/productions. youre videos are very helpful
Great tutorial. Wouldn't have thought to put chorus on a main vocal. I wonder whether it's better to do de-essing before or after HF boost EQ. Also I would appreciate if the video background music (love emil rottmayer) was muted during the audio examples.
i think that de-essing before and after can be good. i use soothe2 a lot to smooth out high frequencies, and then i end up boosting the high end after that. that way i'm bringing the presence back in, but without the annoying resonances.
Here's the REAL way to properly mix 80s-style vocals: First, be a happy-go-lucky teenage girl with secret dreams of musical stardom who is getting ready for her Senior Prom; Then, get detention from a meanspirited Principal for accidentally scratching the paintjob on his car while you were pulling in next to him; Finally, at detention meet and fall in love with a tall, moody handsome guy in a bomber jacket who has his own band and knows how to mix vocals...
I would never attempt to record a vocalist by my self : period Maybe a sketch or a demo : but not final take : The amount of plugins to correct everything is ridiculous. Cheers 🥂
also slate is kinda outdated, not the best stuff in town soundwise, just the most generic. It is like waves for modern musicians. Not as plastic but not as „analog“ as they would claim to be. Nice vid tho, very detailed.

Sorry for audio issues, my lav mic slipped and I didn't notice it during the recording.
MAN!
Every single video that I've watched so far has been way too good. Some people are just talented at teaching.
Thank you Sifu Ip Man
Thank you so much. I love 80s music and synth, so this is awesome.
its not really the 80s....i grew up back then 😂😂
Did I watch this whole video and understand very very little of it. Yes. Yes I did. Very informative even though I didn’t understand a lot of it!
Thanks Eliana , I always enjoy your tutorials, for me they are the best on RUclips and are enormously helpful to me.

That was crystal clear ! You gave me ideas, thank you 🫶🏼
THANK YOU. I’m a beginner and vocals have just been a nightmare. This has helped me understand a lot of the process.
From while to while comming by, to get some insights in the art of making the old expensive 80s sound. :D Thank You!

You are such a treasure; you have helped my creativity and music tenfold. 🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍
I have never seen Disperser used on a vocal before, definitely will experiment with it in the future.
Already liked the vid before watching lol ❤
Thanks for these amazing videos. It was very helpful, greetings from Istanbul.

Yeah, didn't mean to have audio, just forgot to remove it in the final edit.
You got that funk.

Do you think my townhouse SSL buss comp. would be nice on vocals as well? Btw, the lighting, decoration, one of the best I seen! so vibrant!
Yes, I think it should work fine to replace an La2a style compression, but ideally something more aggressive before using the buss compressor
22:55 Nice sounding reverb!
great tutorial!
i bought m-ott so long ago and haven't used it once. it's kind of intimidating lol
Thank you.
💯
Is that a Sailor Moon gaming mouse!? 🤩

What is that de-esser you used?
Its the one in the Slate VMR. The visual is just a spectrum analyzer to show whats happening/look cool lol
Slaps too hard
not really 80s vocals, it is very on your face over compressed... phil collins type pf vocal not here. Do i need to make a video about it?
Louder = better
I'm sorry are you transgender?
Nah bro. That would've been obvious.
i'm sorry too

I think the slate stuff sounds great, only thing I don't like is ilok really.
What plug-ins you think sound better today?
