Indonosa Indonosa Check on your economy production stats (V key) and make sure your cookhouse is functioning everyday. On the harder difficulties, it only takes one sick cookhouse worker to throw your schedule off. Also, cookhouse is level 1 heating, so they tend to get sick. Don’t waste a research point on cookhouse insulation until the very end, you can just place it next to a steam hub or in the inner ring.
Tip: You don't need to turn the generator on until the temperature drops. If you do choose to turn it on, don't bother with houses because the homeless will sleep in the heat zone. I don't touch the generator for days and build 8 houses before the first night and a medical post close to the generator because you'll get a couple sick people. Secondly, I build my workshop on the first day a decent distance away from the generator to create an industrial zone, because towards the end of the game you want automatons running your workshops 24/7 and the area close to the generator is premium living space. Lastly, resource outposts are amazing - build those instead of wasting your valuable early research time on faster gathering or steam hubs. The faster you get a beacon up and get more workers the better... Especially if you choose child shelters, like me, and can't rely on the child labour.
@@SecretLars Absolutely, but you have a finite number of tech choices to bee-line at the start of the game. Faster gathering will only help you later when you get a coal thumper up, as you will easily and quickly exhaust the starting resources so long as you don't kill off all your early workers.

Would like to see more. Tip: get automatons on mining coal asap. In the later parts of the game coal hast to be coming in 24/7, and the human workers are really not able to do that.

You only need the automatons on coal towards the end of the game, I've never failed to start the storm with less than 25k coal storage using human in days shifts.
Dunno about that, in my last game i had 98k coal and never even made a coal mine or coal outpost, and the only thing i used automatons for was wood because they were in areas that made little sense to heat. If you go to the generator you will be able to see if you get more coal in that you use, and that is a 24 hour cycle, so you really don't need to have it comming in at night if you just make sure to keep it in the green. Now keeping the margin large is good naturally so you have some freedom to increase the heatlevel when it gets colder.
You only need 1 or 2 in the cook house, as they will process all the raw food early on, saving you 3-4 peeps for other jobs, if you build gathering huts near the piles ( 1 ea for coal and wood/steel) first thing, and lay roads peeps don't get cold, I've never had peeps get frost bite (though haven't tried the game on hard yet). If you wait until you're asked to build the tents, you get a hope bonus. And use the inner 4 circles for houses and max 3 med tents only, placing the hunters, cookhouse and workshop on the 5th circle (as they can be heated during work hours. I've also found during late game you can run just 9 small steam gens around the 6th circle all through the storm.
Steam hubs are waaaaay more economical than developing the range of the central steam engine. Just build circularly around them. I’ve bet several play through like that and it’s almost game breaking how much easier it makes things.

Honestly wish you had a full video doing a full playthrough, this initial setup really helped me when I first played this campaign a couple years ago and was able to beat the game on Medium after having to start over. Would love to see more though of this playthrough, and I like that you did stuff for the last autumn too, maybe the edge as well?
Just started playing in console. Really appreciate this video, I'm restarting a lot too trying to make it as efficient as possible. I was paying too much attention to what the game was trying to make me build. I'll be trying this setup tonight.
Surely we get a playthrough at some point, I'm enjoying the game at the moment but it's often more entertaining to watch someone who actually knows what they're doing play it
I find immediately getting a scout team and exploring to be the best option as I'm usually able to pump out enough resources to get my research up to coal mine by the time the Automaton gets to New London therefore giving me enough breathing room to pivot my workers to steel and wood opening a factor and making my bots cheaper and more efficient
This might be either a difficulty thing or that 11-bit Studios have adjusted the game somewhat because as of now (June-2020) the initial cold drop is a much more leniant -10°C instead of -20°C. Also the first medical post is just as capable in handling your initial batch of survivors during those temps because I had my peeps gather all the free resources first before starting to build up an industry. Although in hindsight, I should have used Gathering Stations as well ^^ That thinking almost ruined my coal supply too. Even with the tooltips took me a while to realise that coal thumpers and gathering stations work hand-in-hand ^^ Im personally more fond of the "Sustain Life" approach, because while the initial strain with the gravely ill is problematic, once you get your first infirmary you will get your sick workforce back without the need for a factory to produce prosthetics.
Colton . Zimmerman There are some really good games popping up recently that might scratch your itch for a "Fallout-style citybuilder." 'Surviving the Aftermath' is the first one that comes to mind. Unfortunately it's only available on the epic game store, as far as I can tell, but it's a game that's worth it at only $19.99 for early access. It's good, too. Some more games that sound like what you're looking for are: 'Endzone: A World Apart' 'Atomic Society' Maybe 'After the Collapse' Try those on for size.
Colton . Zimmerman oh, dude, also, definitely check out Atom! Atom is great. It's an indie RPG a lot like the first two Fallout games, but it takes place in Soviet Bloc countries. It's only $11.99 on Steam.
I disagree on some things: 1. During work time the temperature that matters is that of the work place (while in free time the temperature that matters is that of homes, that of the outside if they are homeless). There are a lot of chances for colonists to get sick (and so not be able to work) if they just gather the stuff in the cold, that's why in very early game I rely on gathering posts which have some insulation. 2. The workshop and anything else other than homes and buffs for homes should be placed farther away from the city, at least 6 squares, as to allow 3 rows of homes to be placed encircled around the generator since workshops and other buildings have heaters and homes don't. 3. I'm not actually sure about this, but I think that the medical post efficiency is influenced by temperature, however I can't find any info on that. If it is though it should be placed next to the generator, maybe instead of the workshop.
I suggest an alternative first law: soup. It allows you to turn your 100 raw food into 250 rations instead of 200, which is extremely helpful because it gives you a longer window to get your hunter's huts staffed, and that's a huge challenge in the early game since they require 15 people and make 15 raw food per hour. Sadly, that's not enough food to keep up with the needs of 80 people, so you end up needing 2 hunter's huts with 15 and 10 people staffing them respectively. Needless to say, it's pretty damn difficult to get that many people freed up within the first few days, so any additional time you can spare is very helpful. Also, yes, it makes people discontent, but at the beginning it shouldn't be an issue. Now, onto the alternative strategy and why you shouldn't just make hothouses. 1.) It requires Tier 2 research, meaning it'll take a while to unlock. 2.) You need a steam core to build it. This wouldn't be an issue if Coal Mines didn't also require steam cores, and you WILL need a lot of coal in the next week as the temperature drops and you start using heaters, and then on top of that demand will nearly double when you get the generator range upgrade. Now, in the early game you can get a burst of 3-5 steam cores from the early scouting, but remember that requires research, too, and it requires lots of wood and another 5 people on top of what you're already using to staff the hunter's huts. This means you now have to free up 30 people AND you have to wait for the first 3 expeditions to complete AND you have to do a bunch of early-game research to even begin with hothouses while still making enough coal to sustain a city's worth of buildings. Just trust me, do soup early and throw down a cookhouse on Day 2. You can thank me later. P.S. don't forget to staff it with children because child labour is OP
One more tip to add: Different buildings have different frost resistance f.e the childcare house has 2 while a tent has only 1, so you can build the ones with 2 to the outer rim and all the less resistant ones to the closest rim.
I played almost exactly how you played even my laws the same, But I went for the Beacon pretty quick my 3rd time and I feel like that kind of screwed me were I could have already had the hot house. I have failed 3times!!!!!! lol but this game is great I am finally trying to get just a little help by watching your vid, ni9ce video man new sub here!!

I like this, too many people are trying to make a “funny” tyrannical run of this game (making children work and making everyone hate you). I love that this is just a drawn out, informative, nice play sesh
Thanks very much for that. This game is fun but punishing and this guide gave a lot of useful tips. It's interesting that you only use one workshop (with emergency shifts) and that you put the housing in the central ring area. But with the heaters, medical posts and cookhouse are still covered. Thinking about it though, I guess you don't have time to get a steam hub up to build a residential area.
Tell me you're bad at a game without telling me you're bad: "I got lynched on day 5 after losing over half my people." Thanks for this video, it's going to help a lot!
Probably someone already said this but im gonna do it anyway cause it does not seem to be common knowledge about this game. The first emergency shift NEVER kills anyone regardless of the workplace. After that only emergency shifts on resource piles (not on gathering posts) will not harm people. However if you do the first emergency shift on your workshop - for example to rush scouts or whatever you like to rush) - and then immediatly do a second one on a resource pile the chance of an engineer dying in your workshop is quite high. Though you can have as many emergency shifts as your discontent allows on resource piles and noone will die.
You should be using gathering huts on those stockpiles at the start, as long as their workplace is warm you can hold off building houses until the first temp drop, they get sick working on the resource piles.
Shit I learned from this video that made me question my intellegence. "You should use your first steam core on a hothouse so you don't need 30 people hunting inefficiently all day." "You should build your first indistries in a clump together around 1 steam hub." (Kill me now, I was sure for some vague future reason they needed to be next to those various edges on the wall." "Build all your starting homes right around the genorator in a ring, don't build them in a means that needs an additional steam hub immediately." "When the temperature starts to fall, make sure no workers are out in the negative 40 temps gathering junk by hand." (I was wondering why I had 18 people sick by day 7) "It's 100% ok to build a carehouse and 2 industries before the beacon, especially since you won't need to waste all your wood building houses and a third god damn hunters hut because everyones starving." "Turn the heaters on around your first industry so everyone does not freeze to death." "Make sure your basic god damn needs are taken care of before building a second workshop." Geeze, my first game ended after I rapidly harvested all the wooden crates and realized that without dismantleing key buildings like hunters huts I'd have 0 way to climb the tech tree and establish a single permanent industry. Thank you so much mate.
Some more tips for you pal: Don't build buildings during the day, as the people will happily build during the night. You don't need the boiler on until the 7am the morning of the first frost spell. With that you don't need to gather coal until the day before the frost. On the first day you need to spam mass collection of wood, that way you can spam down 8 houses, 1 tech building, 1 food gather, 1 cook and 2 medical bays.

I'm new to this game, I had no idea the Gathering Post worked so well with the Coal Thumper... I feel stupid and happy at the same time for discovering this now !!! ahahah this video was very helpful dude :)
game went free a few days ago, and I kept losing and this video has given me the best start. Thank you and u earned urself a sub
Same here. I got it yesterday and played it but lost after two hours. This vid helps
My guy, this is the best beginner tutorial I have ever seen. Thank you very much for the tips!
The great things about this kind of game is to see different playstyles and approaches. I stumbled over this game and really had to get it due to the obvious challenge. And boy it kept me busy but until I saw your video, I realized that I was having a lot of fun watching some let's players fail but ended up involunterily copying some essential mistakes YOU SIMPLY DIDN'T DO. That was awesome to see and I loved this quick guide to help me become better at the start - Even on hard. Thanks.
Man I knew that game would be right up your alley just by seeing the trailer. Probably gonna get the game as well
really good job i liked the planned industry sector ;) such a nice place everything is heated up noone gets ill
Frostpunk AKA "hope your people don't start eating each other
God, I honestly wish they would it would save my food supply and we don't need those children.
I recently started playing this and I want to slap myself in the face, I wondered why the laws were different sometimes and you just pointed it out, just seen the split in the laws you can choose from smh. Great game.
Just got this game. And I have to say your video is BY FAR the most helpful one I've found for someone just starting out. Thank you so much!
Really nice video!
You helped me very much with these tips!
Now i can start the adventure without allways struggling :D
Thanks for the tips. I’ve been restarting a lot too getting the grasp of things, especially since the genre is new to me.
Hook us up with an expedition tip video! That’s where I was lost
That early research and 24-hr labor focus on heat and hot house are genius moves.
I feel whenever I play frostpunk I do well at the beginning, then when the second storm starts looming over the horizon, that’s when it gets...
*Not Good.*
100+ without sickbeds
Honestly wish you had a full video doing a full playthrough, this initial setup really helped me when I first played this campaign a couple years ago and was able to beat the game on Medium after having to start over. Would love to see more though of this playthrough, and I like that you did stuff for the last autumn too, maybe the edge as well?
Just started playing in console. Really appreciate this video, I'm restarting a lot too trying to make it as efficient as possible. I was paying too much attention to what the game was trying to make me build. I'll be trying this setup tonight.
This game is so awesome. I've seen another tutorial from a guy starting totally different from you. There are many possibilities. Which is great!
Surely we get a playthrough at some point, I'm enjoying the game at the moment but it's often more entertaining to watch someone who actually knows what they're doing play it
You make this look like such more an awesome game than I already think it is pogchamp
I played this for the first time yesterday. Talk about additive. Cool game. Like you played it way more than I should've.
I find immediately getting a scout team and exploring to be the best option as I'm usually able to pump out enough resources to get my research up to coal mine by the time the Automaton gets to New London therefore giving me enough breathing room to pivot my workers to steel and wood opening a factor and making my bots cheaper and more efficient
plzz more of this man, this is literally the best guide video out there for this game....!
Although in hindsight, I should have used Gathering Stations as well ^^
That thinking almost ruined my coal supply too. Even with the tooltips took me a while to realise that coal thumpers and gathering stations work hand-in-hand ^^
Im personally more fond of the "Sustain Life" approach, because while the initial strain with the gravely ill is problematic, once you get your first infirmary you will get your sick workforce back without the need for a factory to produce prosthetics.
This concept is absolutely beautiful.. need a fallout style game like this
Colton . Zimmerman There are some really good games popping up recently that might scratch your itch for a "Fallout-style citybuilder."
'Surviving the Aftermath' is the first one that comes to mind. Unfortunately it's only available on the epic game store, as far as I can tell, but it's a game that's worth it at only $19.99 for early access. It's good, too.
Some more games that sound like what you're looking for are:
'Endzone: A World Apart'
'Atomic Society'
Maybe 'After the Collapse'
Try those on for size.
If it is though it should be placed next to the generator, maybe instead of the workshop.
medical post can work under "fresh" condition at least
I would love to see either a play through from you or more tips
Your videos are top notch first class mate. Excellent guide.
Thank God I found your video. I've been struggling for days. Thanks alot.
Terrible strategy
@@masterofcoin1217 Sure it is, my essay-worth of explanation means nothing.
I'd be excited to see more of this, This War of Mine was hands down one of the most fun survival games I've played In the past few years
If we ever have to live in a place like this, I nominate you as our leader!
Thanks for this. I was just letting my bros trek through the snow everyday lol
another one!!! we want part 2 :D
One more tip to add: Different buildings have different frost resistance f.e the childcare house has 2 while a tent has only 1, so you can build the ones with 2 to the outer rim and all the less resistant ones to the closest rim.
I recently just played frostpunk and I keep failing or struggling from early to mid game. This video was really helpful for me
thank you!!! super helpful start off tutorial. Makes it more feasible to venture of into the story of the game and more advanced building. Brilliant!
I've had this game since release. And after much trail and error and looking up guides I finally bet the first scenario. I love this game!
Great stuff, enjoyed this. I always struggle with food so interesting to see you go for the hothouse so early
"Doctor, I'm crazy sick!" "Here, have some crazy meds." ;D
Wow, thank you for this video! I've failed this game so many times, and just beat it last night. Never had such a satisfying win! This starter tutorial is the best!
Also, your "were you raised in a barn?!" absolutely killed me XD
Just heard about this today, so thanks for the guide.
thanks for all the info and the tip just started this game and was dieing like no other lol
Been using steam hubs all wrong! Had them by houses not work areas wow this was enlightening! Cheers!
Awesome vid, helped lots...more vid ideas: top ten tips for early, mid & late game...differences from going between order & religion sides, scouting tip & automaton tips! Thanks!
Firstly I will echo the call to buy This War of Mine. Unless you have a Switch, you have no excuse! Secondly... I didn't know this was out! I'll pick it up in a couple of weeks after pay day!
Thank for thinking this thru...refreshing. Pls keep this game going,.wud like to see how you handle what is over the horizon!
Started playing and out of all the vids on youtube I enjoyed your tips the most! If you ever go back to this please do a walkthrough!
Love this video man, would love to see more with FrostPunk.
I like this, too many people are trying to make a “funny” tyrannical run of this game (making children work and making everyone hate you). I love that this is just a drawn out, informative, nice play sesh
Just purchased the game and came looking for tips to get a stable economy going. This is right up my street.
Thanks now I know where I was making mistakes especially leaving the workers at night at those resources centres
This video was fantastic! Got my sub. Hope to see a second part one day!
Just got this game (sorry I'm late) and made so many stupid mistakes (e.g. building tents randomly away from the generator)! Thank you for this video!
Thanks very much for that. This game is fun but punishing and this guide gave a lot of useful tips. It's interesting that you only use one workshop (with emergency shifts) and that you put the housing in the central ring area. But with the heaters, medical posts and cookhouse are still covered. Thinking about it though, I guess you don't have time to get a steam hub up to build a residential area.
lol, just started my first game and had everyone gathering out in the cold for days. no wonder half of my population ended up ill.
Poor davey stuck to fallout 4 in a way
I personally love to see you play more stuff and I'm sure you enjoy it as well!
Hey started playing frost punk on Xbox one. I have no clue and your video will help me get a safer start so thank you :)
Use this build on ps4 version the other day. It kills!! I squeezed another workshop in there somewhere but other then that great job man!
Please make a full gameplay! I always run out of coal and that's depressing
This is two years ago but thanks a bunch just got into this game and this video helped
Tell me you're bad at a game without telling me you're bad: "I got lynched on day 5 after losing over half my people."
Thanks for this video, it's going to help a lot!
Really like the look of this game. Look forward to more videos about it
whoa?! you can turn buildings around!? That's amazing.
dude your a boss! thanks for the tips. i would ahve loved to see you go even further with this build :P
Davey, if possible I'd love to see you build something like that huge forge in the center of the game.
definitely taking inspiration from this - for sure
You should be using gathering huts on those stockpiles at the start, as long as their workplace is warm you can hold off building houses until the first temp drop, they get sick working on the resource piles.
it's actually something I now do on hard mode for the warmth reason.
Shit I learned from this video that made me question my intellegence.
"You should use your first steam core on a hothouse so you don't need 30 people hunting inefficiently all day."
"You should build your first indistries in a clump together around 1 steam hub." (Kill me now, I was sure for some vague future reason they needed to be next to those various edges on the wall."
"Build all your starting homes right around the genorator in a ring, don't build them in a means that needs an additional steam hub immediately."
"When the temperature starts to fall, make sure no workers are out in the negative 40 temps gathering junk by hand." (I was wondering why I had 18 people sick by day 7)
"It's 100% ok to build a carehouse and 2 industries before the beacon, especially since you won't need to waste all your wood building houses and a third god damn hunters hut because everyones starving."
"Turn the heaters on around your first industry so everyone does not freeze to death."
"Make sure your basic god damn needs are taken care of before building a second workshop."
Geeze, my first game ended after I rapidly harvested all the wooden crates and realized that without dismantleing key buildings like hunters huts I'd have 0 way to climb the tech tree and establish a single permanent industry. Thank you so much mate.
“Was your born in a barnnnnn.” 😂 Def subbing
Some more tips for you pal:
Don't build buildings during the day, as the people will happily build during the night.
Good looks on the information brotha!
Very impressive to see this. This will be helpful on endless mode (that they say is coming)
